Four stars for the spicy lemongrass broth, and two stars for the regular broth. We got both for takeout (noodles packaged separately from the broth - so profesh), and here's our breakdown: The spicy lemongrass is SPICY! If you want to be able to taste the other flavours in the broth, ask for half spice. The broth is definitely more acidic, so if you're like me and love to squeeze limes into your regular pho, it'll be right down your alley! Noodles were firm. The beef eye round was packaged semi-raw and meant to cook in the broth - if your broth has cooled and you're too lazy to warm it up, you will end up eating carpaccio (still good in my book!). The regular broth was much less complex in comparison, and didn't have the same layering of flavours present in the spicy lemongrass. We've definitely had better, and will try other pho places to see if there's a better standard broth. However, if we're craving spicy pho, we'll definitely be back! The green avocado salad was similarly unimpressive - it had a nice crunch, but other than the dressing and the pieces of meat, not a lot of variety in texture or flavour. This is probably the best tasting pho in DC I've had in DC/MD and trust me on this one because I am a pho connoisseur. It seems like its a family-owned restaurant with a divey vibe (similar of those in Asia), but the food is amazing! No frills, just great authentic Viet food. The broth is probably the best tasting I had thus far. I go here at least once a week (sometimes to cure the weekend hang overs =P). My only complaint is that sometimes when its busy, you will have to wait a bit (due to the small size of the restaurant) and they will skimp on the portions of meat. The restaurant is extremely small, a hole in the wall place. It's located in the Columbia Heights neighbourhood. As soon as you walk in the first thing that draws your attention is the size. It is way too crowded. They seat you next to strangers just for the sake of getting more customers seated. I ended up next to four other strangers and it made for a claustrophobic dining experience where in order to go to the bathroom you had to bump in to the other tables just to get by. The bathrooms were clean so that was a plus. The waitress was pretty slow to take our order but the food came out fast. I ordered the Chicken Pho. We started coming back to this place more and more because it's close by home and parking's easier than at Pho 14. It's now become our go-to for pho. I've also been to other pho places in the region since my first review of Pho Viet...and I keep measuring them against Pho Viet. Their broth is great and their meat is the freshest and best quality. I love the tendon in pho, and Pho Viet is generous. And definitely try their fried bananas -- they use some kind of rice flour to bread it, and it's amazing with ice cream. The most incredible pho at an incredible price, and now that it's warm out the patio is a great spot! I always get the #12, Ph Tái. Last time I had it very spicy...and it was VERY spicy, so be careful. also shared a starter with my friend: vegetarian spring rolls! I have low expectations for pho places actually in the city, but this place lived up to the hype. Even the owner was shocked that we came all the way from Falls Church to try this place out. It was loud, packed, and energetic for a Monday night. You could hear the owner yelling "half spicy?!" or "all the way spicy!" all the time. Def. not your normal pho spot, but in a good way. As a Vietnamese Californian native, I always like to try our Viet spots when I travel. I heard that this place is better than most. I ordered both the regular pho and the spicy lemongrass pho. I just moved to DC from California and I'm SO glad my friend took me here, 'twas just the taste of home I needed! Ordered pho tai and it was delicious. The best clean tasting broth I've ever had- very flavorful but not MSG salty, clear color. I've been told by my other pho expert friends that that's success of a well-simmered broth. Prices are definitely comparable to DC meal prices. Paid ~$11 with tip. You'll definitely be seeing me as a regular here. Owner also has friendly relationships with other regulars. Tiny but welcoming pho house with a small, solid menu. Mom and Pop run the place and are invariably friendly and eager to please. I have mostly stuck with the house staple, which shines in comparison to that of the nearby & inadequate Pho 14, but is less definitively great than the DC area's iconic Pho 75 chain. Other menu options are prepared with an eye to freshness & simplicity, and everything is both good and cheap. Warning: last time I checked, they still didn't have a liquor license and don't seem to plan to acquire one, so if you want to knock back a 33 with your soup you'll have to look elsewhere. read more

On a cold January night nothing goes down better than a big bowl of spicy Pho Tai Chin soup (number 12). We also sampled their summer rolls and green papaya salad - all very fresh and tasty. Their pho is superb. Their broth is so flavorful, and their egg rolls are also great. I can't speak to anything else on the menu besides the pho and the egg rolls, because after discovering how great those things are there, we stick with what we love. We always get the pho ga (chicken pho) which has nice lean chicken breast white meat. We've had a number of disappointing pho experiences around the area where the broth is bland and tasteless. That is never the case here, far from it. We particularly love their spicy broth option. Sometimes we do half & half, sometimes full spicy. It's always delicious. Don't be fooled by the imposter restaurants around town that go by a very similar name (I'm looking at you, "Pho Viet USA"). THIS place is the real deal. After trying a few other pho places recently and always ending up disappointed, we decided that it is always worth it for us to go to Pho Viet even when it's a little out of our way. so bright and clean inside you wouldn't even think you were eating in a basement. but you are. and dare i say it's the greatest basement you'll ever dine in. i have finally found my pho place in dc proper. after my dining companion and i placed our order, the waitress gave us a pot of green tea. our summer rolls came out right away. they were amazing. the shrimp was a healthy shade of pink, the bean sprouts, carrots, and lettuce were fresh and crunchy, and the dipping sauce was peanuty perfection. i ordered the beef special pho:: beef eye round, flank, soft tendon, and meatballs. the broth was flavorful, the noodles didn't stick together in a blob like they do at OTHER places in dc, and there was ample meat. my plate of additional bean sprouts, basil, jalapeños, and lime was so beautiful. i would've taken a picture of it even if it wasn't part of my meal. i had the pleasure of tasting my dining companion's dish, which was a bowl of noodles, carrots, basil, and cucumbers topped with honey lemongrass beef and crushed peanuts. it was delicious! the beef was tender, with the honey adding a touch of sweetness and the lemongrass adding a zest. the dish didn't need the tangy sauce that accompanied it, but boy was it was irresistible! for dessert, we went ahead and ordered both options: a banana cut in half, covered with a few peanuts, and dipped in coconut milk and frozen. y-u-m! i felt like i was transported to a tropical island. the other dessert was a banana fried with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup. it was fresh off the fryer--golden brown and crispy on the outside and warm and gooey on in inside. the vanilla ice cream added a whole new level of enjoyment, too. i had to take a star off because the tea's temperature wasn't hot enough, which meant it didn't steep properly until well into the meal, and the wait from the removal of the dinner plates to the handing off of the dessert menu was excruciatingly long. so long that i heard the loud girl sitting behind me's life story (..."and you know what she did? she spilled beer down my entire shirt. and i was like, are you KIDDING me right now?"...) these are very minor offenses when you look at the bigger picture: fresh and amazing food, a spotless environment, and cordial proprietors. i also very much enjoyed their big boyz bail bonds pens. we all had a good laugh at that one. no but seriously, try to say it five times fast: bigboyzbailbondsbigboyzbailbondsbigboyz..... read more

Came in with high expectations and left with many disappointments. My friend and I were seated at a six person table, us at one end and another two at the end with the middle open. The space was tolerable as it was. We were eating our food, I had the well done brisket, my friend had the veggie, and we both got egg rolls, WHICH came out 38 minutes after the other two people at the table sat down!! WHICH was 15 minutes AFTER we did and had been eating for 5 minutes already by that point! They were done with their dinner by the time we got our egg rolls. When the pho finally came it was luke warm (yuck); while we were eating our pho they proceeded to seat another person BETWEEN us! So it was 3 on one side and 2 on the other, when you get to that point don't start cramming tables it's RIDICULOUS. I've served before and worked at restaurants but I have never been somewhere like this. Just start taking names at that point, crack out the wait list. Poorly managed and I literally can't say one good thing about his place. Also, The utensils where IKEA plastic utensil, worm, dirty, and the chopsticks where STAINED. I've ordered from from Pho Viet twice: the first time was excellent and the second was less than. The first time I got the chicken pho and I was nervous because I don't like white meat chicken (due to it usually being dry), however I was sick with a bad cold and needed some dietary gold. But I need not have worried because the chicken was moist and flavorful. The broth was rich and delicious. I also got the lemonade and honestly, even hough it was labeled as "homemade lemonade", expected a bottled sugary beverage. Boy oh boy was I wrong. It was really homemade and so so yummy! The second time I decided to go with a more traditional pho with 2 different types of beef and of course the lemonade, because it was so so good before! Not only was my order late, but the delivery guy gave me what can only be described as a "withering" look when he dropped it off (really no clue why). I brushed it off and opened up the bag, getting excited about my meal...except there was no lemonade. NO LEMONADE! I know this seems dramatic, but guys, the lemonade really is that good. Resigned, I opened up the pho to discover it only had ONE type of beef, which was a tough wavy strip and neither the brisket nor the med rare type that I ordered. I tried to get Eat24/Grubhub to get the restaurant to bring me at least a replacement lemonade, but apparently the restaurant didn't answer or say no because I got a non-response. In short, I don't know how to rate them because one time was excellent and the other was not. Food wise, the chicken pho was AMAZING. The beef pho was not. Lemonade (when delivered): delicious. YAYY finally decent pho in DC! Being a pho lover and slightly hung over, I was very eager to try this little place out. My first impression upon walking in was "its so clean, can this be good?". Even the condiment bottles were clean and not sticky. Granted there is not many places in DC that has pho, I left happy and very pleasantly surprised. Came with a friend and had their summer rolls and their pho. Summer rolls did not impress me. Yes, rice paper wraps were soft and fresh and very cold but inside it was mostly filler, having lots of lettuce and bean sprouts, and only thin slices of shrimp and no pork. Pho was good especially for a place in DC and not Eden Center. Broth was pretty flavorful and had some depth indicating they might actually boil their bones, but I do suspect that they may use some bouillon. Nonetheless it still was tasty. Amount of rice noodles was perfect and vegetable condiments were all washed and very fresh. Will definitely have to come back to try some of their other dishes, but at least for now its good to know I don't always have to drive out the Falls Church for a hang over cure. read more

I'm not a pho snob, aka I don't know how folks define a good pho versus a regular or mediocre pho, but this was just above and beyond all pho I have tasted. I was excited to try Pho Viet after receiving a strong recommendation from a friend of a friend. I was not disappointed. I ordered the summer rolls and the #16 pho which has rare round eye and meatballs. The summer rolls were good and you can't beat the $3.95 price. The pho was very good. Everything was fresh and the broth was really flavorful. I'm a big eater so I would have appreciated a bigger portion (e.g., more noodles, meat, etc.). If I hadn't had the summer rolls I probably would not have been full. If you're just having pho and you have a big appetite I recommend getting extra noodles.
