I love this restaurant. I live in the neighborhood and previously went to Milto's before it closed. The building has been remodeled and looks great with inside and outside eating. It's one of the better Mediterranean restaurants I've ever been to. I moved to Austin from Houston and I commented to my wife the other day that I like Kabobzi's better than Fadi's in Houston. My wife loves the Gyro sandwiches. She likes the Fat Bread option. I like the Shish Tawook platter. It has chunks of chicken on a bed of rice with a little sliced onion as well. The chicken is marinated to perfection and it's very tender. With the platter you can choose 2 sides. I really like the Greek salad as one side. It has olives, tomatoes, onions and feta cheese. The salad dressing is full of great tasting herbs. I also like the hummus. Sometimes hummus can be bland, but this is very tasty and topped with some olive oil and paprika. The baklava is classic and excellent. You can choose pistachios or walnut on wonderfully flaky filo dough. Tonight I got the rice pudding. It was classic and very tasty. They have another restaurant north on Burnett road which I haven't been to because the Guadalupe location is only a mile from my house. You can tell it's family owned and operated because many times the owner and family members are there. It feels very warm and nice with them there and you know that someone is "minding the store". I've eaten here about a dozen times now. The staff has always been very helpful and nice. They're very welcoming and on top of things. I commented how much I like the place and they've thrown in some extra food... just being friendly. I've done only take out over the last several months with the pandemic. But, now they are completely open for dining. The location is at 29th and Guadalupe which is very close to the UT campus. Kabobzi is definitely on my list of favorite restaurants. read more

My wife and I ordered food at Kabobzi on Guadalupe and the first thing that struck me was the staff. Helpful, friendly, and quick. In all the food took about 15 min from phone call to pickup. The platters that we ordered were chicken over rice and Fatoush salad. The Fatoush Salad was the best I've ever had. The chicken was perfectly seasoned, and my wife's chicken platter was also delicious. Fresh veggies, a terrific dressing, and spices that normal, non-Authentic Middle Eastern places in Austin leave out. If they keep up the food quality, cleanliness of their establishment, great tasting food, and awesome customer service, I will be coming here for years to come. All of the other Middle Eastern restaurants in Austin just took a back seat to this place. Give it a shot. You won't be disappointed. read more

I wanted to be a regular here, but their highly erratic service makes that pretty impossible. In short, they seem incapable of consistent timely preparation of orders, at least for lunch. A usual scenario goes something like this: I put in an order on their website around 10:30am. Their site tells me it'll be ready at 11:15am. I show up at 11:20am, and they haven't even STARTED on it yet, which necessitates me waiting around for about 10 minutes while they get their collective you-know-what together. This scene has played out for about 50% of my orders give or take, and I've been in there probably approaching a dozen times over the last couple of months. While that might not sound like a big deal, it sure is when one is on a pretty tight lunch schedule and when there are scads of alternatives next door, right around the corner, etc. It's just not worth the aggravation. I've talked to management about it a couple of times, and they swore it'd get fixed. It did not, as I saw today. It's a shame, too. I'd give them a solid 3.5 stars for the food quality and portion size. It's always solid and good. I guess if you're not on a schedule and don't care about time, go for it. Otherwise, go somewhere else. read more

I stopped by here for lunch while working at the Convention Center. It is on the backside of the CC and is a low key spot that was not overly busy. They have an outdoor area for when it is nice outside and a good amount of seating inside. You can call ahead orders if you liked, which a lot of people did. I ordered the Sheesh Tawook with a Greek salad and hummus. It was a a perfect portion. In addition, it came with pita bread too. The food here was excellent! I had the vegetarian plate and chose these 5 items: hummus, baba ghannouj, grape leaves, falafel, and moussaka. The hummus was creamy and the baba ghannouj had a nice smokey flavor. The falafel was cooked perfectly with a crispy outer crust. I had never tried moussaka but decided to and I was not disappointed. It was a tomato based dish and was a favorite among our table. Can't wait to try it again when I'm in Austin! read more

Came to charming Austin for a music conference and quickly found out how NOISY this city's bars and restaurants are! Our first couple of meals out were pricey for the quality of the food, and we were disappointed to see the hipster trend of 'award-winning' food show chefs behind these establishments. Doubt most of them have even half the '10,000 hours to achieve mastery' under their belts...but, I guess most of the dining-out public doesn't care. Anyway, we turned to Yelp for some suggestions for good, unhip spots, and found the Phoenician that is largely Lebanese food. Sometimes middle eastern places refer to themselves as "Mediterranean," but Lebanese food specifically is among those he very best from that part of the world. Despite the fact they were serving a wedding party of about 80 people, they were happy to accommodate us, and boy were we happy to be accommodated Starting with the warm and gracious greeting, followed by their most delicious fried cauliflower florets I've ever tasted, the meal was excellent. I wanted the gyro plate but the waitress sadly reported that they had no more left. Instead I had the kibbeh sandwich with a refreshing green salad. Michael ordered the chicken shawarma sandwich, also with salad. Total bill a little more than $30, a third as much as our previous evening's dinner. Everything was fresh and flavorful, so much so that we returned for lunch after he next day! Recommended! read more

Really good sandwiches here - they pack it with meat. I really like the gyro here - perhaps even the best I've had. Really moist and flavorful. My wife's chicken shwarma was equally good, though a little on the dry side. Very tender though. It's also surprisingly light on vegetation for a mediterranean wrap - just lettuce, some pickles and some cheese, which I'm fine with but might be a bit surprising. The fries are super crispy, though could use some more salt. The parking is really confusing outside, so we just parked down the street and walked back up the service road. It's not the safest walk by any means, so be careful. Also really surprised this place is relatively empty at lunch considering how good the food is - the construction next door probably doesn't help either. Hope more people come as its a hidden gem! read more

The place is charming and the staff were friendly. I had really high expectations on the food after seeing the high Yelp rating and reading the reviews. I'm hoping that it was an off night in the kitchen when my friends and I went. Otherwise, I'm very confused. We ordered: appetizers - baba ghannouj, grape leaves, and falafel entrees - chicken shwarma and gyro plates both with hummus and fries as sides. My friends ordered the Phoenician mixed grill which looked amazing but I unfortunately didn't try so I can't write about that. The baba ghannouj, hummus, and grape leaves were pretty good and standard to other Mediterranean restaurants. Acidity was on point for all 3. The baba needed a little more salt which was added by us at the table but otherwise good. However, the falafel was sadly disappointing. They were over cooked, dense, and dry with very little flavor. The chicken shwarma and lamb/beef gyro were also disappointments. First, the spices and flavor were there and quite infused into the meat, but again, all quite dry and a little too thinly sliced. The pita slices were also a tad too thin and not fluffy as I've had. Sadly, the fries are just standard fries with little taste. We were hoping they would be dressed with Mediterranean spices. They could have easily been prepared from standard frozen bag of fries found in the grocery store. Due to the high rating, I'm tempted to try it again but otherwise probably would not recommend this place. *Update: the gyro leftover I brought was more moist the second day after reheating. read more

My first time trying this place. It was a take out order. I loved Mediterranean food in San Fran Bay Area. This chicken schwarma had no flavor. My hummus was missing!! Our daughter had a craving for some Mediterranean food so we stopped on over here for dinner. This is a smaller restaurant with a patio/bar/hookah lounge nestled on top. There is construction all around it to and right in Rainy district so traffic was a bit much. We enjoyed our delicious meal, but let me get to that a bit later. What threw this off for us is the fact that there really is no Private parking for this place. We happened to have had our doggies with us, no dogs allowed here..ok, that's fine. The weather is good enough to leave them in the car fora bit, not hot at all nor sunny. We pull into this tiny parking lot next to the restaurant, we thought this was the lot for this place, the private one... Nope! The man standing in the entrance told us $5 to park, we mentioned we were coming to eat at this restaurant and he looked surprised, like this was a lot to pay and park to walk up and down the area to hit other spots. We told him we had our doggies with us and just wanted to eat at this restaurant, he replied "Give me your keys and $5."... um, sounded a bit odd, we did not feel comfortable doing this at all so we decided to take the dogs home and come back, finding a different lot to park in or see if we perhaps missed the private lot. We realy wanted to try this place. So we come back and drive around the blocks behind the restaurant, nope.. no private lot anywhere. We wound up parking down the street in an even more expensive lot and walked on over to get a bite to eat. The service... We were greeted warmly in this darkened room that only had a couple other patrons visiting. The waitress was really sweet and we have no complaints there. The food, we ordered... Falafel (4pcs) - these were probably the best I have ever had. They were not over cooked nor had that texture/taste of bad or old oil. They were light and seasoned perfectly. Chicken Shawarma entree x2 - This chicken was amazing!!! You get a huge portion and its all shaved/sliced up and piled on the plate. Again, this was perfectly seasoned, but not over powering so you can still enjoy the meat, cooked to perfection we were both really happy with this selection. Gyro Plate entree - The Gyro meat here is a mixture of both beef and lamb and wow do they really pile on the meat. What was so awesome about this meat was that it was not overpowered with seasonings a lot of other places do, this tasted lighter than any other Gyro meat we have ever had. This did not disappoint at all and we highly recommend it... Between all of us, for the sides, we had... Hummus - Perfection, I cannot explain it any other way ... creamy, smooth, balanced.. yummy! Baba Ghannouj - First time I ever tried this, it had a smoky flavor to it and I was taken back on how much I really enjoyed it - highly recommended Greek Salad - Just as expected, the dressing was spot on perfect! Rice - cooked perfectly, it had the perfect texture good rice should with a light seasoning that kept it from being bland but subtle enough to know you are eating really good rice, it was light and fluffy and they do not spare the on the portioning and the sauces Tzatziki sauce - AMAZING!!! It has a bit more dill than I am use to but actually, I liked it better this way. We had to order extra! Garlic sauce - pretty much explains it all, its garlicky - very garlicky, but we expected as much hence the name. It complimented the chicken well All in all we really enjoyed our visit here. Amazing food and great customer service. I would really love to give 5 stars but the whole parking mess prevents me from doing that.
