Pretty decent stay. At check in, the valet attendant could have been a bit more attentive and affable. But, the front desk staff made up for his lack of customer service skills. King bedroom was cute and chic. Bathrooms a bit small but I suppose that's due to the older architecture of the building. They provided plenty of toiletries. Really nice fitness room and good in house restaurant. One pretty considerable drawback is that they use a 3rd party garage for valet parking. We had a situation with my friends vehicle having some substance drip on it from a leak in the garage. I was refunded a night's fee as compensation but had there been more considerable damage, liability issues would have definitely ensued. read more

My long-distance girlfriend and I were seeing each other after a nine-month hiatus and we found this property to be affordable, close to the city center, and near a wide variety of public transportation. After arriving from DCA through an Uber and walking into the lobby, we were attended to immediately by Derrick at the front desk. He was very friendly, helped suggest a few places to go, and even managed to get us a room with a view. We were up and in our room in less than 5 minutes. On a side note, the elevator announced where it was going and what floor we were stopping on, which is very convenient to us as we are visually impaired. The rooms themselves are a bit small, but laid out in such a way where they use all the space available. Each room has a coat rack closet, a mini-fridge, a desk, an ottoman, a TV, a lounge chair, and an end table. Everything about the room has a modern feel to it with rich, blue accents and black and white marble counters. We made use of the entire room and then some. Our requests for extra amenities were met so quickly they were practically walking behind us. Even when it was time for us to leave, the staff went above and beyond and let us stay an extra few hours to freshen up before our flight. All in all, we literally couldn't have asked for a better place to stay - especially for the price and the location. When our paths cross again and we end up in the nation's capital once more, the Phoenix Park Hotel will definitely be at the top of our list. read more

I guess this classifies as a boutique hotel (though they are not that small) but it does have a unique appeal. Like an old Irish lady - this is still going strong. In many ways this hotel resembles hotels in Europe. Narrow hallways, classic old elevator (which dings and not beeps), and a chute to drop your mail from the higher floors (I don't think it works - looks great nevertheless). The rooms are, however, bigger than European hotel rooms - but barely. Solid wooden work-desks and sofa chairs. The best part, according to me, are their beds. Most comfortable hotel beds I have ever slept on! Walking distance from the Union Station, this place has very friendly staff and great service. The hotel is due some renovation but it still manages to provide a comfy plush feel. Sound proofing can certainly be improved. They have a small but very functional gym in the basement. Also, if you like to run outdoors, the hotel is ideally situated as you can go for a 5-6 mile loop around the mall, museums, monuments, and the tidal basin. Their wired Internet connection is solid; WiFi is a hit and miss. The upper floor rooms have newer furnishings, at least the rooms I have stayed in had new fixtures in bathrooms. And last but not the least, it's right above the Irish Dubliner pub. And, NO LOYALTY POINTS FOR YOU! read more

Mediocre Hotel. Mediocre Service. I booked this hotel because it's convenient and close to the Union Station. It's not exactly cheap as we paid nearly $200 each night (through Bookit.com). Overall - experience is "mediocre" and I thought it was a bit overpriced for the quality of room and quality of service. Check in: Taxi pulled up to the hotel at 11AM. No doorman, No bellman.... ok. So we started lugging our luggage into the hotel and the nice bellman finally showed up. Front desk staff were EMOTIONLESS. There's no welcome, no thank you's, no do you need anything, no maps, no directions, no nothing. I was really excited to arrive to the hotel and the front desk staff (gentleman with round glasses) completely killed my mood. He was not rude per se but there's -- just -- no emotion! Towards the end of my check in transaction, I handed my credit card to him to see if he would even acknowledge me or even thank me... nope, nothing. He swiped my card, handed it back to me... I contained my urge to say thank you out of common courtesy... just grabbed the card and he was perfectly ok with it. No interactive words exchanged... "Your room is paid for in full, and here's your room number and elevator to your left" ... ... ... again, no thank you's, no welcome. Nothing. Uck! The Stay: The stay is ok. Housekeeping staff is attentive and room is clean. No complaints there. This is a "historical" hotel so I expected the room to be smaller (and they are). We did not get a view but I did not expect one either. Not a noisy room and everything is mediocre. Carpet is clean but showing its age a bit. Wallpaper and matching curtains are green and yellow and is very 1920's. Check out: - Again, the same gentleman checked me out without emotion. - Me: "Check out please, Room Number XXX" - Front Desk: He glazed at the computer screen for maybe 2 minutes "your room is paid for in full" ... ... ... silent, with no eye contact. He then proceeded to move other paper work around. - Me: "So, are we all set?" - Front Desk: "yep" no eye contact, no thank you's, no transportation offered, nothing!!! - Me: "okay, thank you!" [kicked myself -- why did I say TY!?!?!?" - Front Desk: .... ... ... crickets. No acknowledgement or thank yous back from the front office. Argh! The bellman and doorman were excellent though. They then assisted me with luggage and transportation and thanked me for my stay. I just felt very brushed aside by the front desk... they couldn't be bothered. The front desk is supposed to be the first impression of the hotel and should be more warm and welcoming. Given our experience, we probably won't be back. We found our new favorite hotel!! This place is a hidden gem. We stayed at another hotel the two previous nights and my kids were so sad to leave the breakfast buffet there. However, AS SOON as we checked into this hotel - they were thrilled!! The front desk staff was friendly, welcoming and great with the kids. Our room was immaculate, smelled amazing, and then there were the beds!!! The beds and linens were the comfiest we've ever experienced at a hotel. The hot chocolate machine on 2nd floor was a hit, the robes were great, and the shower was amazing!! We did not love the loud intermittent fan noise, but found once we ran it on fan mode (constantly on) it was great white noise., We had a Capitol tour the next morning and the Corner Bakery was right next door, and so convenient. It was an easy walk to the Visitor's Center. I'm pretty sure we found our new favorite hotel in the District, and we'll for sure be back!! read more

There were not three people checking out of the hotel. There were TWO ppl with three coats. That were wore for separate occasions. We were driving back in sweaters and hoodies and did not need the coats at the time hence why they were left. I called the same day as checkout to report the left items and even spoke to the gentleman who had booked the suite after us. He said no coats were there when we spoke to the front desk they said they would checked the room as it wasn't occupied. How is that so? How do explain housekeeping coming to the room and cleaning it while a "DO NOT DISTURB" sign was on the door that was given to us by the house keeper herself . A mystery? Noisy, dirty, and lacking professional staff. I was surprised by how dirty the hotel was. Dust was caked on parts of the room I was in (including the tissue box-which was gross). The sheets smelled stale, and it was just overall disappointing. The front staff lacked professionalism and the polish that I'm used to at other hotels (especially in the DC area). Perk? Worst customer service experience I've ever had booking a hotel. I accidentally booked an "accessible" room online through Expedia. Called within the hour to change it bc I didn't want to use up a room for another person who would actually need it those accommodations. They refused to change the room without incurring a change fee and a higher rate for a smaller room. I also had to add a night and then required me to cancel (with cancellation fee) and re-book so it would double hold on my credit card for 10 days. Ultimately cancelled room altogether bc of the difficulty in accommodating simple requests. Worst experience ever.... No less for trying to accommodate other guest who would need that room the most. read more

I really loved Phoenix Hotel. It is a historical building but completely renovated keeping some antique details very charming. The location is great, a few steps from Union Station and very close to Capitol. There is a Corner Bakery at the same block, Magnolia Bakery and Le Pain Quotidien inside Union Station. The cleaning was perfect. The size of the room is good. The bed is very comfy. I had no issues with noise but the hotel offers ear plugs in any case. I could have a very early check-in for free and it was really really awesome. The breakfast in the hotel's restaurant was very delicious. read more

After my mom was stranded in DC due to the winter storms this week, we scrambled to find her a room close to the train station. She's a cancer survivor so we wanted to make this visit as stress-free as we could. We immediately called the closest hotel which was Phoenix park. The rates were higher than we expected but worth it for the convenience! She stayed Monday and Tuesday and finally got a train out Wednesday morning but they were so accommodating with us being able to pay from states away. They even told her that they'd hold a spot for her in case the train didn't leave or was cancelled again. I highly recommend them and I'm so thankful for them helping us in a pinch. read more

I'm a DC snob, I prefer Georgetown and DuPont circle but my sweet husband planned this trip and chose the hotel based on location (we were going to a capitals game). The hotel is easy to find with a beautiful view of the Capital building. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. There's free coffee and a latte/hot chocolate machine on the second floor. Valet parking is available for $60 a day. The rooms are very tiny no closets but the bathrooms have a nice rainfall shower and comfortable beds. We could not find any local shops for water etc and there were no vending machines. The hotel has the Dubliner restaurant open for breakfast lunch and dinner but gets packed quickly with a very overwhelmed staff. The hotel corner is home to a very mentally unhinged homeless man and his friends that will hassle you and get in your face, some staff shoos them away some just take the oh well approach. Elevator is tiny so be wary with large suitcases or strollers. read more

My partner and I just returned from a three-night Labor Day weekend stay and overall, we had a pleasant experience. Hotel: We Ubered to the hotel from DCA and arrived at around 10 am and were allowed to check in early at no cost. The staff was friendly, letting us choose a room with a view and a king size bed. Yes, the room and bathroom (the counter space specifically) are on the small side but was adequate for 2 people. Also we're there to sleep -- not live there, so no big deal. They do provide basic toiletries, hairdryer, small fridge and a safe. During covid, cleaning only takes place upon request. The bed was very comfy (pillows are a little too big and poofy for my taste) and everything was pretty clean. I appreciate that there are hand sanitizing stations throughout and complimentary coffee on the second floor. A little odd that vending and ice machines are on every other floor. The street noise is pretty loud - not something I'm really used to but just be aware. They do provide earplugs. The floors themselves are very quiet. There are blinds, but they do not black out the room. We did not eat at the adjoining restaurant, so we can't speak to that. Location: It is NOT exactly walking distance to everything. While it is close to Union Station, the closest points of interest (Capitol and Supreme Court) are 15 minutes away. Everything else is between 30 mins to an hour away walking. As first-time visitors to DC, I would have really appreciated it if the hotel staff had told us upon check-in that there was a free DC Circulator bus around the corner that takes you to the National Mall. Yes we could have Ubered or used the scooters, but a Free bus would have saved us a ton of time and money! There really aren't a lot of places to eat in the area -- just the hotel restaurant, whatever fast food is available at Union Station and the Corner Bakery. If you're looking for a place with easy access to food and restaurants, this is not it. We did feel safe enough to walk to whatever eateries we could find. Overall, this hotel is a nice stay. It was within budget and met our needs. I might stay on the opposite end of the Mall next time to be closer to food and points of interest. read more

This was my first time in D.C. in 18 years (!!!), and I really had no idea where I wanted to stay while I was looking for a good hotel. As I scrolled through Hotels.com, I eventually stumbled upon Phoenix Park Hotel. Its proximity to Union Station won me over in two ways. One, as I really don't know the Metro or D.C.'s neighborhood's that well, I didn't want to try to learn the subway lines at 10 p.m. after a long bus ride down from NYC. Two, the beau is handicapped, so a quick walk to and from the station to our hotel was ideal, especially if you tie it back to Reason #1! So, the Phoenix Park Hotel it was! The lobby is modest yet beautifully decorated; the festive Christmas tree in the corner was a lovely touch. Antonio helped me with check-in, which took two minutes, if that. The elevators were quick up to the 6th Floor. We stayed in Room #616; some reviews on both Yelp & other websites mention the cozy (errrr, tiny) rooms, and, if I had to assume most peoples' standards, they'd consider #616 to be a tiny room. Do *I* care? Hell no! A king-sized bed (which was SUPER comfortable, by the way), a flat-screen TV, electronic climate control, and a gorgeous and sleek bathroom were all I needed. We had enough space to put our bags and luggage on a bench at the foot of the bed, as well as a small closet space to hang our coats. I use hotels to sleep in at night...or take the occasional mid-day nap...and this place supplied the comfort I needed at a reasonable price. The hotel is attached to The Dubliner, a nice basic Irish pub with an epic breakfast! It's nice to hop on the elevator and not think, "Gee, where will I have brunch?" The smell of the restaurant does waft into the lobby area a little bit. Personally, I love it. Ha! It whets my appetite. The staff, overall, was so incredibly friendly and accommodating. As I mentioned, Antonio was helpful as we checked in late in the evening, and Brenda was lovely at check-out, even helping us check our bags in as we still had five hours before we left D.C. and didn't want to lug luggage around as we explored some museums. I wish I got the name of our housekeeper, but thank goodness when she was outside of my room the first morning, my hands full of two Starbucks cups as I struggled to use my room key card. She used hers to let me in. She was my favorite person that day. Ha! As a New Yorker, I am used to so many city street noises and sleep through them about 9 times out of 10. That being said, a garbage truck did rattle me pretty early on our first morning. I can see people not used to city noises thinking that it's horrible, even blaming the hotel for the street noises. (There is really nothing a hotel can do about that, lest they erect 10 story high soundproofing walls. Haaa.) That being said, their cheeky note about street noise, coupled with a complimentary pair of ear plugs among the bathroom toiletries, gave me a good chuckle. So yes, be warned: You might end up with a small room if you come to this place. If that doesn't matter to you, it's all the better, because this is a truly lovely hotel with an awesome staff and clean comfortable quarters. I would come back here again! This is a great "under the radar" hotel with a boutique feel in a great location a couple of blocks from the Capitol. I was in the Capitol Suite which was an amazing space complete with a large balcony overlooking the iconic Union Station (Amtrak AND the Metro red line). The ground floor restaurant, The Dubliner, has excellent American and Irish dishes. The rooms are super quiet and have walk-in showers with rainfall shower heads. The staff was friendly and very helpful. Parking is expensive ($60 per night), but if you're business stays inside the area covered by Metro or Amtrak, you shouldn't need a car. The trip to and from DCA or BWI airports can by train or Metro and with Dulles (IAH) with a bus connecting to the outermost Metro station. read more

Today I had a upsetting experience while trying to dine in there restaurant Dubliner, the restaurant staff was very rude and unwelcoming, after asking to clean the table before we sat. I personally felt targeted and un welcomed by the restaurant staff,I felt the negativity, and chose not to have lunch there. I personally would not EVER! patronize the restaurant ever. Let me start of by saying that the receptionist guy - Hector is so nice! Because of how nice and accommodating he is I stayed. Very easy check in process - no hustle. He gets all the 5 and even 10stars! It made me wanna give 4 stars, I wish there was an option for 3.5 just because for the price it's really decent. What makes me give 3stars is that the hotel it self is old, rooms are quite small, reception area is tiny as well. It's very cute, old school chic. There are some rooms with a nice view that overlooks national postal museum. No toothbrush as such, I would say it's more of a motel then a hotel. There is a fridge and an iron in the room. If I could give this hotel negative 5 stars I would. I had them booked for an event that got canceled due to COVID. They gave me not a single dollar of a refund, and after some back and forth, they agreed I could reschedule the booking within 30 days. They told me it was noted on my reservation. I called back not even a week later to reschedule and after being on hold for 20 minutes and a call back with no answer, I finally got ahold of them for them to transfer me to two different reps and tell me there was nothing they could do to help me. They did not honor the booking change they told me I could have, they did not refund me a single dollar. Horrible customer services, total lack of empathy and zero care for their customers. Save your time and pitch a tent - you'll be in better luck on the streets rather than wasting your time and money on this hotel and a complete joke of customer service. read more

I stayed at the PPH for 4 nights in July and this place was awesome! The location is incredible--walking distance to Union Station and Metro. You can even see the Capitol Building from the front of the hotel. I would consider this a boutique hotel. Everything is small (the lobby, the elevators, the rooms), but tastefully decorated, clean, and very well maintained. The staff here is incredible--beyond accommodating and welcoming. The onsite restaurant, The Dubliner, is delicious and offers authentic Irish food. I enjoyed the Shepherd's pie, corn beef and cabbage, Beef on Wheck, and the Irish pancakes with kerygold butter! read more

This hotel was so cute but very basic. It is in a nice location on North Capitol and down the street from union station so a good hotel to stay at if planning to travel via the train. The room has very modern but minimalistic furniture. Not much decor or pictures on the wall but it was clean which is very important. I enjoyed the Irish Restaurant attached but would have enjoyed more a voucher for breakfast as the hotel provided none. The ice machine on our floor was broke but also valet is the only option for parking and cost $59 a day. For that price I was not expecting my car to be returned to me damaged and when the staff who pulled my car up showed me he had me go inside and speak with the front desk who called their manager. They comp'd me one night stay if my two nights and said the parking g garage is not their responsibility although they use it for valet...new contract needed and I still paid for my truck. I was given the number for the parking garage and when I called they said policy is if a car is damaged in the garage you must not leave without an attendant seeing it, taking pics and doing an incident report. They said the hotel staff knew this and therefore since the truck was brought to me as it was valet they too were no longer liable. I say all this to say you pay the price but do not think your car will be safe. The hotel could have done more. Would not intentionally look to book here again. I will say though the sheets and bed were exceptional very high thread count. read more

You are paying for location...5 mins from the the Union Station. Overpriced for a tiny room, and if you try to sleep in, the cleaning lady won't let that happen. Early morning speaking loud with no courtesy for residents, slamming doors as she kept cleaning. And our view... wow!! A brick wall. The other staff was nice and the bed was soft...but for that price... well let's just say I was disappointed. Valet parking is $57...$57 a night!! Crazy! read more

Since I had loved my previous stay in Phoenix Park Hotel (I had given it 5 stars) I decided to stay here again this Labor Day Weekend. I also requested for the same room as last time. That room was unavailable so they gave me a room a few floors above it. Unfortunately, this time around, I will have to give this hotel 1 star because the A/C in the room would conk out in the middle of the night and I would wake up sweating in a stuffy air less room. On the first night, I requested that I be transferred to another room but the front desk said that they were fully booked and there was nothing they could do. Their solution? According to them I should crack open the window. Seriously?? Horrible nights' sleep on night No. 1. After the first night,the lady at the front desk said that she had the A/C checked and was working fine but it then it conked out in the early hours of the morning and again I woke up covered in sweat but at that point was too exhausted to call the front desk. I literally tried to sleep in an airless stuffy room. Horrible night's sleep on night no. 2. I asked the front desk for a discount on my room since the A/C didn't work on both nights I was there and I just don't think it's fair to pay full price after that terrible ordeal. According to the lady there since its Labor Day, the manager is out and she didn't have the authority to do so but she says the manager will call me first thing tomorrow. Lets see how this turns out. Great little place to stay. I needed somewhere for just two nights for a work trip and planned this location for certain museums to see because parking is a hassle everywhere. Parking at the hotel is $59 a night and it takes them 20 minutes to pull your car out when you need it or there is a garage a block or so away that's $35 a night. The hotel is within walking distance of Union Station which accessed the trains but also is a small mall with a food court and some stores. The rooms are small but just what you need. I like how they decorate with photos from around DC. It was pretty quiet and I couldn't really hear neighbors or anything like that. The only reason minus one star was I felt customer service could have been better. I always had to initiate the conversation to either check in or ask for my car instead of them asking me if I needed any help. They didn't ask joe my stay was or anything to just make you feel welcome. read more

We got this hotel from bidding on Priceline in which the Phoenix is described as a luxury boutique. Overall, we were happy with our stay here and found the Irish decor and influence quite charming. If we had a choice, we'd stay here again. Pros: 1) Location (one block away from Union Station-transportation & food) 2) Plush, comfortable bed 3) Clean 4) Accomodating staff 5) Flat screen Negs: 1) Cramped quarters (the bed took up most of the space hence the flat screen) 2) Pedestal sink - no counter space, had to store our things on a shelf for towels. 3) The vent in our room was oddly placed and kept blowing cold air over the bed. 4) Furniture in the closet VERY out of date and sort of dirty looking read more

Stayed here on a 5 day trip for business. I had expected more from prior reviews but was unexpectedly disappointed. While the bed and pillows were soft and firm, my bed was made up with a flat sheet on the bottom for all five nights which was strange. During the night the bottom sheet was constantly moving around and very annoying. There was no type of protective cover on the mattress either. The next problem was that the room appears to have only been surfaced cleaned for the last year. (see pics) A layer of dust was visible under every piece of furniture in my room. The wallpaper in the bathroom was peeling everywhere. And on top of that on the very first day I moved the tray with the coffee maker revealing a huge patch of dust on the desk, and yes that patch remained all five nights even after I left a larger tip one night hoping for better cleanliness. After arriving in my room after leaving a larger than normal housekeeping tip I also found that I had no toilet paper on the roll (weird since a half roll had been there when I left in the morning) and two tissues left with no extra box. Other than the fact that this hotel is convenient to Union Station, I cannot think of any reason I would stay here again. read more

The Phoenix Park is THE hotel to stay in when traveling to DC. Close to the US Capitol and Library of Congress, Union Station, National Gallery of Art, the Newseum and the NOMA district. The hotel has a luxurious, European feel from the moment you enter. Staff is professional and understated. The elevators are fast and efficient. The rooms are fresh and airy, with big windows and a soothing spa color palate. We stayed in the Capital Suite on the penthouse level. It has floor to ceiling windows on two sides looking north and east. A spacious terrace with table and chairs is perfect for a morning cup of coffee from the Keurig in the kitchen galley of the room. There is a full sized dining table with six chairs under a silver vaulted ceiling; a living room with full sofa and comfy upholstered chairs, coffee table, large flat-screen tv mounted on the wall and beautiful, modern light fixture complete the luxe look. The bed is large and super comfortable with nightstands on each side with 3 drawers each. There is a small sitting area in the bedroom as well. The bathroom is huge and finished with the greatest attention to detail and highest quality finishes. A small tv in the bathroom mirror is a nice touch! Modern fixtures and a walk in glass shower with rainfall shower head make a welcome and refreshing oasis at the end of a day of travel. So glad we decided to stay at the Phoenix Park hotel! read more

At check-in, the receptionist added a $100 charge for any "incidentals" but said it included if we dined in the restaurant attached. We went to the restaurant and they said they had never heard anything about that. Rooms were comfortable but clearly had not been dusted in a while, there was just a flat sheet laid over the mattress instead of a fitted sheet amongst other things. Maybe in non-covid times, the stay here is better but I've stayed at other places during covid that didn't bend their standards. I stumbled upon this hotel on hotels.com and I definitely plan on returning. All I needed was a place to sleep - was out all day at meetings and then a dinner, so for one person traveling solo, this was a dream come true. Room was very small, but again, not an issue. The great things I'll highlight are: 1: It wasn't just clean, it was IMMACULATE. The room, the bathroom - truly impressive. 2. It was QUIET! Right across the street from Union Station and I slept like a dead person. 3. Speaking of which - the bed was super comfortable - like baby bear "just right" comfortable. NOTE: THE BED WAS A LITTLE HIGH. At 5'3 I had to kind of jump up on it. So if you have a physical challenge of any kind definitely tell them when you reserve. I didn't go the the restaurant but it was hopping - and the breakfast looked great, but again i can't vouch for it. But being 3 minutes away from Union Station at that price was invaluable! read more

Irish charm, eh? Awesomely comfortable beds and free wifi sure charmed me! Rooms are old-world style, some quite small. But I'm still a big fan of this hotel. Staying here made me feel like I was visiting a rich old family friend. My double-bed room was, uh, cozy is about the right word, crammed with furniture, decorated heavily with wallpaper & pictures. Big tall bed (I was alone, you might fare better) and smallish TV, but lots of HD channels, nice. That tall, tall bed was impossibly comfortable and boasted several king-size pillows, I slept like a happy drunk Irishman. The desk was super tall too but the desk chair was short, so if you bring your laptop you'll be typing (yelping?) about at armpit level LOL. Free wifi was slow but steady, a good thing bcos the ethernet port in the room didn't work for squat. The bathrooms are a bit dated, no huge floor & wall tiles here nor granite counters, instead a classic huge pedestal sink, very old school. Plenty of thick, THICK towels, soaps etc. A scale in the bathroom is a nice touch, are they telling me I'm yelping (like drinking and eating) too much? Well yes, that's a definite possibility :) Reasonable size fitness center is tucked into the basement, offering two treadmills, two elliptical machines and plenty of weights. It's usually pricey, so I was pleasantly surprised that the Phoenix Park occasionally offers per diem rates, which is the reason I was able to stay here. If you're fortunate (booking directly with the hotel instead of another website helps), you'll get turn-down service with a robe and a tiny bottle of Bailey's on your pillow. That is honestly pretty charming too. I rolled in to Union Station on steel wheels, just a 3 minute walk across two big streets, so didn't experience the joy of the $50 per night parking fee. Connected to the Dubliner pub so a nightcap is darned easy to arrange. It's a trivial walk to the various food choices in Union Station. If you're willing to walk a bit up Mass Ave, dinner in Chinatown is quite doable from here. read more

This is probably the hardest review I've ever written. I picked this place b/c I got a good online rate and it was super highly rated at another travel website. We were staying for our wedding anniversary and since we only recently have moved to the DC metro area we've done many a staycation in downtown. This is probably our fifth. We also used to do staycations in San Francisco when we used to live in the Bay Area. The team at this hotel was the best service that we've ever gotten. Prompt check-in. I had forgotten some toiletries and they placed in bathroom prior to us returning. And in passing, I mentioned our anniversary and they provided some bubbly to help us celebrate later. Awesome awesome service. Had to also check a bag the next day as we continued our exploration of the 4+ museums over the coarse of two days, again awesome. So the location, is right across from the Union Station. This is fortuitous in that Union Station has a ton of restaurant options, especially if someone is staying for an extended stay in the area. However, it makes the neighborhood a little rougher. Don't get me wrong I used to volunteer at charity organizations and have lived in many cities proper, but it make for a rougher vacation experience. People yelling in the middle of the night. Police and fire trucks constantly out responding to who knows what outside your window. This was complicated in that the A/C could not be turned on in an unseasonably warm winter night, literally like spring. The system was on heat mode (AC disabled/see sign) and the room never got below 71. We normally sleep in a much cooler temp w/ceiling fan going, so it was a rough night. The only way to rectify was to open the windows which exposed you to constant sirens (we theorize that a fire station must be close), guys yelling at the top of their lungs both during the night and the next day, and flags. Yes, flags are outside the front and in a windy night they flap all the time, felt like I was at a marina. I turned the room fan on high for white noise but it would auto shut off after a few hours and we'd wake up. So I'd recommend to stay closer to the mall, like we've done in the past and get a more modern building that can use AC anytime. Don't get me wrong, the building was old but very nicely updated but the lack of needed soundproofing made it for a rough experience. BTW, standard issue in the bathroom is ear plugs which is always a bad sign. read more

Reviews around the internet for this hotel are mixed, but I'm glad I went with my gut. Comparable hotels (area, price) have a decidedly modern vibe that just doesn't appeal to us. Having read many reviews, my primary concern was room size, so I called to book a room and was able to pre-book an upgrade to a Deluxe for only $20 more. I was also concerned about street noise, so I mentioned this and requested a room up high but with a street view. Despite booking only a couple weeks ahead, I was easily accommodated and I wasn't disappointed upon arrival. The bed was amazingly comfortable and there was ample room and an HDTV with an HD signal was a welcome surprise. Internet access was free and worked well. Being an old hotel, the water pressure wasn't the greatest and the bathroom was on the small/dated side, but it was nothing that detracted from our stay or would deter me from staying here again. The attached restaurant, The Dubliner, is nothing to get excited about, but is nothing if not convenient. I would suggest avoiding breakfast which is more or less separate from the restaurant and was overpriced, busy and aggressively average. We grabbed a late night snack in the restaurant-proper and it was just fine; pub grub is hard to mess up. Parking is handled by valet only and at $44 per night, its pricey, but one pays for convenience. By the time we arrived, the last thing I wanted to do was once again navigate the streets and make my way to the cheaper parking over at Union Station. It was worth the convenience. The location of the Phoenix park is perfect, especially for a first time Washington visitor. It is within walking distance to Capitol and The Mall, it is right across from Union Station making for easy access to buses, trains and the various tour services as well as shops and food.
