Booked one night here with two rooms for a trip to DC. I had no idea just how close we would be to everything! Can see the Capitol from the front of the hotel. Staff was friendly and helpful. We paid for valet parking, which is pricey $60 for 24 hours. However, they let you leave your vehicle after check out so we were able to sightsee. The 24 hours is a legit 24 hours from the time you check in. The rooms are very small, but clean. The Dubliner is downstairs, and its their adjoining restaurant. It's ok. Considering price, location and cleanliness... good deal. read more

Stayed here while visiting D.C. last weekend. I very much enjoyed the hotel! I was a little worried initially because some reviews on TA said it was noisy and they couldn't sleep. I didn't have any problems with noise, I was actually surprised how quiet it was. The bed was comfortable, and the room was beautiful. I also really liked the Dubliner, it was super convenient, I ended up there twice during my stay. Overall was a great experience, checking in and out was a breeze. We were here for the Fourth holiday and were pleasantly surprised. The location is excellent -- a 20-minute walk to the capitol mall and a half block from a DC Circulator bus stop. What surprised us was how nice the hotel was for the price we got. We were on the top floor with a great view of Union Station. The European size room is fresh and recently updated as well as the marble and glass bathroom. The staff was very nice. They have an awesome cappuccino/late/espresso machine on the second floor. read more

My wife and I came here for a night on our honeymoon road-trip. We felt like family the second we walked in the door. Brenda at the front desk was fun, interactive and personable! She loves her job! We briefly mentioned it was our honeymoon and she shared our excitement! When we returned after a night on the national mall we were surprised with a sweet card and wine on our night stand sent up by the front desk (Brenda). Although my wife and I don't drink alcohol, the gesture meant a lot to us and we greatly appreciated her hospitality! We know exactly where we'll stay next time we're in DC! read more

We stayed here as part of our Amtrak getaway. The hotel was very nice and clean. Our room was on the top floor and had an amazing view. This hotel is convenient to most major sites throughout the city and easy access to Union Station. The staff are friendly and very helpful. We only give a 4 because we had a couple issues - our refrigerator didn't work and evidently couldn't be fixed or replaced. We also had some issue with room service - our door hanger was not collected so we had to call for room service and then it was correct. Overall this was a wonderful stay and we would definitely stay here again! read more

We love this hotel! We have stayed here 3 times and every time we walk away satisfied. We weren't sure what to expect this time since COVID has had a negative effect on a lot of businesses, especially those businesses in the travel industry. We were pleased to see that everything at Phoenix Park was as wonderful as we remembered from our past visits. It is conveniently close walking distance to Union Staion, so if you take the train into DC, you can walk over and check your bags before hitting the city. We also like to check our bags when we check out of the hotel and then stop back on our way to the train. The lobby is elegant and it always smells great (is that strange to note?!). It was clean and well-staffed. The receptionist was incredibly friendly and even let us check in early. Our room was small but had everything we needed. It was clean, well-stocked and the bed was comfortable. Possibly my favorite part about this hotel is the coffee/latte machine and lounge on the second floor. I was pleased that it was still there and nothing had changed. The decor is comfortable and elegant. It's a calming way to start your daEverything about this hotel makes me feel like I'm staying in a high-end, 5 star hotel but for an affordable rate. I hope it stays this way forever! I'm giving this place an extra star for its extremely awesome location. Just a short walk to the Washington mall. This is key because parking can be troublesome in the area. The hotel does get you for valet parking at a pricey $50 per night. The rooms are cozy... and by cozy I mean downright tiny. We were contemplating bringing our toddler which would've included his stroller and a whole slew of bags. Good thing we didn't go through with that idea. We barely fit our two bags. I also have to say the whole place kind of smelled like the frozen food section of the supermarket. read more

The hotel is nice enough considering the price however maintenance on the room HVAC systems is lacking. Both myself and my partner did not realize that the system was kicking out copious amounts of dust that made us sick over the course of several days. We mentioned this to the staff and received a snappy come back of "Did you call?" Making me think that the staff generally does not care about the maintenance of the building nor do they have any concerns about the health effects causes by their neglect. read more

Stayed Here for 4 nights this week while having work done on my house and waiting for the water heater to be repaired. Ironically enough, the water in the showers is not very hot, but it was better than an ice cold shower. I never saw a single other guest while i was here so felt like I had the hotel completely to myself. The Front Desk staff are really great, they let me keep my bag in the room after checkout the last day so that I didn't have to lug it in to work with me. The rooms are spacious, the beds comfy and the wifi was perfect. The only "knock" on it was the room temperature shower at it's hottest level, and that there wasn't enough variety in the snacks in the snack machine. I got a twix bar, and it had definitely been melted then solidified again. May be time to cycle them out and get some new ones. read more

We were in DC for a night to attend a wedding. Booked Phoenix Park Hotel because it was walking distance from the venue. My first impression of the hotel when I walked in was not good. It smelled very fishy, possibly because of the attached restaurant. The elevator was small and equally stinky. The staff was very friendly. The room, although small, was very clean. The bed was super comfortable. The bathroom was pretty big considering the small room/small hotel. By the time we settled down and came down to get lunch nearby the fishy smell was gone. PPH is located near the Union Station. Walking distance from various food establishments, Capitol Hill and the Metro station. We opted out of the valet parking and just parked at garage nearby for much cheaper. read more

My husband and I stayed at PPH for two nights and three days, and cannot be MORE IN LOVE with their establishment. Very convenient to Union Station and the Metro, but their staff are absolute diamonds!!! Everyone we encountered was so friendly, and on our final day, allowed us late check out, though we didn't need it. Instead, they offered to hold our baggage so we could fit in just a little more sightseeing before our return trip home on the train. The Dubliner Restaurant has amazing food - and their Irish coffee is fantastic!!! The overall experience - both the stay, and the meal, were phenomenal and well worth the price!! read more

This is a very nice historic hotel. DC pictures, photos hung around the hotel. Style is conservative, nice shades of blue and white, clean and reserved style - it is DC. Even has the old mail slot - not functioning but neat to see - others have posted pics of it here too. Hotel is close to the Capital, can see it and walk to it - think it's 15 mins? We drove everywhere. Def closer to Union Station - 5 mins walk so got some options for food and some shopping as well and if you need to catch a train. There is an Irish restaurant downstairs. Very nice restaurant staff there, gave me coffee and hot water by request, went downstairs to get it. Also few other restaurants around the hotel if you like to check out other places. There is free morning coffee and tea service available on the 2nd floor. One machine for "fancier" lattes and mochas, etc and to get hot water though so little wait. They do have 2 large pots of regular coffee. Suggestion - should have one pot of hot water. Valet parking is available - $59 and yes on the 24 hr clock. Call for it - 15-20 mins before you need it. Got a nice king size room - was upgraded by Expedia cause I been traveling a lot lately is my guess. Cost for the room was decent actually considering we stayed over the Labor Day weekend. Bed was comfy, clean, bathroom had nice toiletries and even ear plugs if you are not used to city noises. decent water pressure. I look at caulking! nice clean, no rust, mildewy things either! =) Housekeeping staff were nice and accommodating - didn't need room cleaning but very nice when we asked for extra supplies. Check in staff was also nice, professional and efficient check in, same for check out staff. What we also liked and appreciated was being greeted every time we passed by the front desk, whether it was good morning, have a nice day, welcome back etc. All staff were exceptional EXCEPT for one lady who did not even bother to look up from the screen to acknowledge us. this ONE lady that one evening when we returned from dinner was the exception sadly. It's funny cause if everyone was the same then yeh we'll blow it off as that is the culture but EVERYONE was super nice EXCEPT for one so that stands out in service (General Manager can PM me if you want more details) Overall we had a nice stay and we really like the hotel. read more

Excellent hotel located steps away from Union Station. Clean in the room, the hallways, and the lobby. We had a king superior room. Bed was so comfortable. Room is smaller than most, but manageable. You can tell everything has recently been updated. New looking fixtures and paint throughout the building. We stayed here because we ended up getting an excellent deal on the Hotel Tonight app. Only amenity missing was a microwave in the room, but a quick call to the front desk and someone came running up to grab our popcorn, cook it, and even brought it back in a nice bowl. Outstanding service. Quick check in and check out. Parking is nearly $60 a night though. We parked around the corner in the Hall of States garage for $19. We recently stayed here for eight nights and enjoyed the location immensely. Overall driving in DC is a nightmare on any day and it is far worse near a holiday. These eight days preceded Memorial Day, so daily gridlock was peaking. Consequently, this location is suitable if one does not want to live in DC nightmare traffic. We were close to Union Station, which is a primary access point to Amtrak, Metro, and many shuttle services. Additionally, DC's Circulator free bus service starts a block away. Several primary bus lines stop across the street. So, we loved our location and that gets five . The housekeeping service also deserves five . The front desk barely gets three due to their lack of assistance. We had to basically beg for DC info. Then when we did get info, it was incorrect. One pays dearly for this location, such as 500$ for one of the eight nights. This was a Tuesday, the costliest nite of the week. Thank goodness we found a safe place to park the car saving us $57 a day. (We did pay $20 a day elsewhere)saving $300 plus the customary tipping for valet. ) If you visit, plan ahead and do some simple research. read more

That doesn't make the fact that this hotel took money for services not rendered, and that were canceled well in advance of the trip, any better. Taking my money or my works money is still stealing money. My 1 star review stands and it's infuriating that the management would insinuate that my work is at fault here. Seriously, don't book this hotel. Don't book this hotel! I had to travel for work and booked 2 nights at this hotel. A couple days before my trip my 2 year old ended up in the hospital with RSV. I had to cancel my trip. My work was accommodating, the airline was accommodating, but not THIS hotel. Oh no, they wouldn't even consider a refund because it was "against their policy." It was against the airlines policy too but I got a credit for a future flight. I travel to DC a lot for work and will NEVER stay at a hotel as cold hearted as this one. Do not recommend unless you book a room while physically standing in their lobby because if your family ends up in the hospital they'll steal your money. read more

Hotel room was small but comfortable bad with the but comfortable that was excellent and many of these were great.. Only problem is handicap accessibility in regards to parking and walking.. There is no parking on the property it's pretty so you can eat a South Park and a lot down the street or have valet parking. As as I have trouble walking we chose The Valet option, This is $60 a night and not an expense we planned on occurring. I realize park is that a premium in DC But this place has an undue burden on handicapped people with walking issues. read more

Friend threw his engagement party here this past weekend (or should I say his wifey to be arranged everything ... and she was nice enough to ask us to join in the festivities). So, I actually didn't sleep in the hotel - but I got to run around the various floors and experience all 9 floors in their full glory ... which is to say, we visited the Dubliner bar downstairs on the first floor (it's attached to the hotel). We partied on the 2nd floor "reception and bar" area, where Archie the bartender took very good care of us. Visited several rooms in between and we spent the rest of the evening in the penthouse suite on the 9th floor (great views, btw). Overall, the rooms are nice and the staff is accommodating. Rooms have some kind of older Irish theme going on (Dubliner downstairs, Kelly's Irish Times around the corner - makes complete sense) ... which makes the nice flat screens hanging on the wall seem out of place and odd. But whatever - you'll never hear me complaining about flat screens. So why only four stars? Two words - rusted railings. Specifically, rusted out railings nine floors UP on the patio. Hello? Penthouse suite, nice patio and expansive views of the city - and you can't go out on the patio because if you lean on the railing you'll plummet to your death? Bah. Do you know HOW HARD it is to control drunk and belligerent party goers and tell them not to go outside? How about drunk and belligerent party goers who need their damn nicotine fix?!? Exactly. Not pretty. Luckily Kelly's Irish Times took all party goers in and saved the evening. read more

I've struggled with how to review my three night stay at Phoenix Park Hotel, a hotel on the list for Historic Hotels of America that is adjacent to the Dubliner pub, two blocks from the U.S. Capitol, and one block from Union Station. In this case, location is definitely the hotel's biggest perk. It's a hotel that stresses its Irish heritage quite proudly. As I was attending a conference at Catholic University of America, I reserved a room at Phoenix Park due to the need for a wheelchair accessible, ADA compliant room. They advertise openly that they offer this option and I specifically noted in my reservation that I am in a wheelchair and that I would be traveling alone and truly needed the accessible option. I received confirmation of my reservation by e-mail. Can you feel where this is going? I arrived via SuperShuttle, my preferred way of going from airport to hotel. The doorman greeted the shuttle and carried my bag in the door (I will admit that I would have preferred to have been asked). As it is an older hotel, the front glass doors are a wee bit heavy. There are some security options at the door utilized primarily at late night. The front desk staff were hospitable, though more in a "professional" sense than in a "We're glad to have you here sense." I immediately found myself looking around at the rather warm, wooded decor and thinking 'This is Irish?" I also couldn't help but notice there wasn't an Irish employee to be found other than inside Dubliners. The employees were friendly, but why emphasize Irish if your decor is simply historic Euro-American and none of your employees radiate that Irish feeling or presence? I was placed originally in room 822 on the 8th floor of a 9-floor building. I'll admit this is unusual for someone in a wheelchair, but I found it refreshing. I was also quickly informed that one of their two incredibly small elevators was down for renovation until late Summer. I kid you not when I say I barely fit in the elevator - they do have a service elevator that was used once, as well. While they posted a notice acknowledging that elevator waits would be longer, it was pretty amazing how much longer it was at times. The problems began with arriving in a non-ADA, not even close to accessible Room 822. The bed was too high, the bathroom was too small and nothing in the room was accessible. So, yeah, after about 15 seconds of thinking "I'll deal with it," I remembered I was attending a social justice conference and thought maybe I should speak up for my rights. The housekeeper was actually on the floor and immediately expressed concern, as well. She showed me another room that was better - Room 802, that offered some access options but still wasn't truly accessible. It seemed like the rooms I looked at either had high beds or small bathrooms or no adaptive equipment. Nothing offered true access. After multiple tries, I relented to accepting a room with a low-bed but inaccessible bathroom. The next morning, I sent an e-mail to the hotel responding to my original e-mail confirmation. It was a polite and respectful e-mail that expressed concerns about my accommodations and encouraging them to not advertise accessible rooms as their rooms were clearly not accessible - I offered my explanation of this conclusion. I also stressed that I had no concerns with employees. I received an e-mail response while I was at the conference offering to move me into an accessible room (Um, why didn't I get it originally with my weeks in advance reservation?). I was informed that a call center employee had failed to note my comments about disability and, as such, it wasn't reserved. I was told it hadn't been available, but was now. Rather than dealing with it at 10pm post-conference, I spent the cash over lunch to return to the hotel and change things out. They also comped me two breakfasts at the Dubliner, though I would later learn from others in the hotel they were doing this with others so I have a hard time feeling like it was truly an effort to make amends for giving me a room where I couldn't use the bathroom. The problem with the new room? While it was BY FAR the most accessible room I had, it was not ADA compliant. The bed was way too high. The bathroom was much better and actually offered a bench in the shower. It's room 302 for future reference. Quite honestly, I decided not to express concern again because I didn't want to miss the conference and figured I could deal with the high bed and narrow areas. However, I ultimately paid a "conference" rate of $189 a night for a room that didn't meet my needs. The only other problem occurred when I checked out and a bottled water showed up on my bill (at $4 for Evian). I hadn't used a bottled water, stated so, and it was removed without any problems. Usually, "I won't go back" adds up to a 2-star rating for me. I give credit for efforts to fix problems, but for folks with disabilities there are better options in D.C. read more

I understand you shouldn't believe on what is on the pictures but still hoped that it will be ok. The receptionists were nice no complains to the staff. The room was dirty, dusty. We had a beautiful view room but we wanted to throw up when we saw how windows were greasy, in finger prints. We stayed 2 nights and no one came to clean the room the next day, im ok them not changing sheets and towels every day but as in all other civilized hotels they have to do cleaning and vacuum. The Phoenix Park Hotel has a quaint little Irish charm to it. When I say little, I mean little, and when I way quaint, I mean little. First, the service in the hotel was just fine. The front desk was courteous both over the phone and in person. There were no issues with billing or with the room or housekeeping. All in all, the service level at this hotel was adequate. Now the hotel itself, well, as one who has stayed in many hotels in his lifetime, it can be easily said that this place is a tad on the small side, in all respects. The elevator is small, the hallways are small, the rooms... yes, they're deceivingly small. I would NOT recommend having more than 2 people in a standard room at a time, as the room layout really doesn't allow for more than that. The rooms ARE nice and have a pleasant charm to them, but they're small. If that doesn't bug you, then you'll have no issues at all. Another big plus is that you've got a GREAT view of the Capitol building just outside the hotel. Second, you are spitting distance from Union Station, so going anywhere by train or even the Metro (the red line stops there) will make getting around VERY easy. Oh, and if you drove here, get ready for EXPENSIVE parking. Valet service is a steep $50/day. If you don't mind the short walk, park at union station, where it's only $22/day. read more

The rooms are also done in relatively period decor, so expect them to have that old world feel to them. If you're looking for something more modern, the Hotel George is around the corner. Have at it! Overall, we enjoyed our stay here. The location was central to all of the things we wanted to see and we booked a few weeks in advance so we were able to get a fantastic rate. The staff was super friendly and nice. NOTE: You can save the $40 on overnight parking on weekends by parking in the municipal lot across the street. Discovered drops of dried blood on pillow right before going to bed. Yikes! Called front desk, he replied, we'd like to come to see it. Front desk guy with manager came up, looked at the dried blood and said "oh, so sorry. Want a new pillow." ???? Is this really the best you can do? Dried blood, that's just gross. BTW, first room had a fan that was so loud, I thought I was in a construction zone. Second room had the dried blood. The rooms are really small, but the bed is quite comfortable (down blanket and pillow top). Still, the dried blood thing just got to me, so I was a little too grossed out to care. I really can't complain about Phoenix Park. We arrived to the valet who gave me the option of parking with him for $50, or driving 50ft to the garage and parking for $25. Thanks, man! Walked inside to check in and was shocked at how SMALL their reception area was. Little did I know small was going to be the theme. Anyhoo, the woman who checked us in could not have been more pleasant or helpful. A total breeze. Got in the tiny elevator, walked down the tiny hall, and arrived to our tiny room, with tiny furniture. Amusingly, the bathroom was almost as big as the room itself. But. Come on, people. It's an old hotel. Like, really old. Did you really expect a 500sq ft suite? No, you didn't. Don't be ridiculous. It's a charming building with super comfortable beds, wifi, and clean bathrooms with a BUNCH of towels. They even provide makeup remover wipes with the complimentary toiletries! And finally, it's DC, not a resort in the Caribbean. You ended up in this hotel because you A) are in town for business or B) are in town as a tourist. The purpose of the room is to sleep, shit, and shower, and the rooms here provide a more than suitable space for that. The only thing I can complain about is the noise. Maybe we had rowdy neighbors, but we could hear EVERY move they made. Again, old building, I know but, crazy noise. In the end, I'd stay here again for sure read more

I was traveling to DC with my wife Cynthiana for a trip just to get away from the Iowa farm lands. Upon check in I was greeted by a friendly valet and checked in seamlessly. I got to my room and I felt like I was checking in a second class Titanic room with the same amenities. The wallpaper was hideous and the drapes made me want jump off the covered bridge back in Madison County into a pool of thorns. I wanted to plug my phone in and had to rearrange the entire room to get power. The bed was comfy I guess. I had a great view of a creepy roof alley or something. Overall a average experience, this 1950s room needs updated. Also be aware of the elevator from The Tower of Terror. It's slow and sketchy. Use the stairs so you don't die. read more

Since checking in, the front desk staff hasn't said a word to me. Or the doormen for that matter. As an introvert, this doesn't really bother me, but it definitely makes me aware that I'm not significant to them. The rooms are small, but semi-charming. The bed is comfy, but the walls are quite thin. I thought my alarm was going off, when it was actually my neighbor's. Coincidentally, the neighboring door is labeled as "Storage". I swear someone is living there. Another hiccup with the stay is they put a $200 hold on my credit card, I'm assuming for damages. However, they only put a $50 hold on my sister's card for her room. I'm guessing it's because of my age but none of this was explained. I wouldn't stay here again, but the convenience to Union Station and the Capitol were worth it. read more

I don't ask for much. Really. One new years once I got a hotel in SF and it didn't have a bathroom, and I wasn't that bothered. It was cheap! We were out! But this place is not cheap. I am on a work trip, and decided to get a hotel that was pretty close to the national mall. Here are some things that I hated about this place: 1. The elevator. Use the stairs unless you want to stay up on the 6th floor. 2. Absence of ice machine on my floor. 3. The tray of food that was in the hall for FOUR days. 4. The cleaning woman who, no matter how many "DO NOT DISTURB" signs I hung (I hung mine and found another one) would knock and try to open my door. When I was on a conference call. When I was trying to sleep. Thank god I had the door locked. 5. The friendly welcome of an empty stare every time I came in the building with the exception of one man. 6. The two pint glasses that stayed in the hall corner the entire time I stayed. 7. Figuring out that there was no microwave in my room after I purchased pop corn when I arrived at 12:45 am. I liked the location and the one man that was there during nights. Other than that, I would not stay here again. read more

Got into my room (420), sat on the bed to charge my phone, and a mouse ran under the door, across my shoes and under the bed. I called room service and they sent a gentleman up to help me move to a different room, but he didn't know anything about why I was moving, and I don't think anyone actually looked for a mouse in the room. At checkout I said I was checking out of room 315 and the lady was confused as to why I wasn't still in 420. I said it was because a mouse had moved in with me in 420 and she shrugged and checked me out, no offer of anything to make up for the event or inconvenience of moving. This could've been handled better. First thing I did in the second room was roll up a towel and place under the door! read more

The lobby is cool, and the attached eatery is great! I have found the rooms to be small but functional. What is really awesome is the location. Right by Union Station and very close to Hall of the States. No need for me to rent a car or use taxi service. If you can get a decent rate, go for it! Classic, charming and wonderful service throughout. In the heart of DC. Conveniently close to most museums and monuments. The only negative is the breakfast...not the food which is delicious but the lack of music. For the love of God, someone stream a Pandora channel like opera, Lana del Rey or even Irish folk songs...anything! The room was full of elderly folk and it was so quiet I could hear their chewing and knives clanking against the plates. Please bring some soft music in. My friend got married, drinks and the reception were at the Phoenix Park. Perks are the location, its cozy feel and the great staff. Front desk to the servers, the staff was friendly, efficient and eager to please. The space itself was nice but a little on the low-ceilinged, close quartered side. Not elegant but definitely doable. Older hotel, but fixed up nicely. Location is close to Union Station and Capitol Hill. The attached pub, the Dubliner, has terrific food and atmosphere. Great place to have dinner or a night cap before bed! Unfortunately we had a few problems with our room. First, we arrived early and the room wasn't ready. No problem. The staff said they would text us when the room was ready. Came back at 5:30 pm, after no text, to check into our Superior King room. Unfortunately there was a leaky sink in the bathroom. The maintenance man said he could not fix it completely. He wanted us to take another room and he said would go downstairs to see if the front desk could accommodate us. An hour later we did not hear back. No one was at the front desk. They were supposedly eating dinner in the back. It was after 7pm now and we still couldn't unpack. The front desk staff acted like we were putting them out. Second, they finally relocated us at 7:30pm to a room on the third floor that had the fan from the restaurant below next to the window. It was so loud we couldn't even hear each other. We immediately asked for another room. The room we were given wasn't as nice, or as big, as the Superior King room we paid for. The bottom line: The location was ok, the staff promised a lot and seemed nice, but they didn't follow through. They would not talk to us unless we asked them a question. The best part about this place is the location, for sure. If you need to be at the center of things, this is the place to be, I guess. The ambience and amenities, if actually in Ireland, would be deemed quaint, cute, cozy, or any number of things. Since it's the US, though, it just sort of feels a little smallish and run-downish: the lobby was cluttered. The elevator felt like a death trap. Most annoying of all, the wireless didn't work *at all* the whole time I was there. The beds, though--delightful. Fluffy, dense, lovely. If you're looking for a comfortable night's rest, this'll do. I was here for a conference, and this hotel was recommended to us because of the "group rate" of $250/night. Um. I've never paid $250/night for any hotel, anywhere, in my life. That's the *group* rate? We figured for convenience and location it couldn't be beat--plus we weren't paying out of pocket--so my co-worker and I both ended up staying here. Imagine our shock when we read the notice on the back of the bathroom door, listing the "regular" daily rate as $900/night. Nine. HUNDRED. Dollars. Per. Night. And no free breakfast. Holy krep. Our wizened colleagues at the conference scoffed at this a bit--apparently no one who stays there ever actually pays the list price. (They're all paying $250, I suppose). It was very comfortable and restful for sleeping, and perfectly situated for where I needed to be. So in the end, it was pretty decent, for this trip. But probably wouldn't make a point of seeking it out in the future. read more
