The Phoenix Salon is the place to go in the Bay Area. My mom and I drive from SF four or more times a year just to see Bija! She is 100% worth the drive (it is only 35 mins ;) Bija is the best! She is a wonderfully talented stylist and an absolutely delightful human. We both feel refreshed and beautiful after seeing Bija. I have been going to Phoenix salon for about eight years. Beja is my stylist and I can't say enough great things about her. She gives an excellent haircut. I always know that I will have a great cut. She gives a wonderful hair wash and also sneaks in a gentle head massage. She is always open to new hair styles and is friendly and easy to talk to. Her haircut/blow drys always grow out nicely. I had to give this place a one star to give it a review! This place does not deserve 1star. They are not equipped to handle children so don't bother with that. The owner went right to my stylist after my 3 year old grandchild was throwing a fit about getting her haircut. The fit was not even 30 seconds and the owner and stylist made me feel so uncomfortable I didn't even get the chance to talk to my grandchild to settle her down and talk her into a haircut. I would of not let it go on for too long to disrupt other people's services. The owner is extremely rude and don't think about parking in her spot even though there is no parking at this salon. The owner parks right in front of the door instead of giving it to customers. Beware! I just read the owners response, but go down to Andrea L response a month ago instead of me going into more detail of my experience, and yep that is how the owner roles. I went there since it's been awhile since I've had my hair cut. I'm from LA and was nervous about trying someone new especially since I have fine asian hair. I told them if they had an Asian stylist and they did, a guy...forget his name. He was ok...nothing amazing and the cost was $80. When I kept telling him I wanted bangs, he kept saying "are you sure?" "do you know how long it takes to grow it out this length?" YES, I know but I want bangs! Phoenix! I've missed you! After being continuously disappointed with my previous stylist and her lack of attention to detail and desire to achieving a satisfied client, I realized it was time to move on. I did a little research here and there, when it finally dawned on me....Phoenix! Phoenix was my salon for years, before moving out to the Brentwood area; so considering I had always been exceptionally please with the results I attained at Phoenix, not to mention the consistent high yelp ratings, I found no reason why not to go back. I called in to schedule a consultation. The receptionist ran a few names by me, along with discussing some of there specialties to help assist me with deciding upon who I potentially wanted to go with. She mentioned Michelle, and being I had recalled reading several great reviews from some of her satisfied clients, and considering she specialized in highlights ( something I wanted to continue with) I decided to go with her. The salon has always exuded that super high end, ultra trendy atmosphere, and even more so since they remodeled. Very chic, and very sexy. My initial meeting with Michelle was nice. I discussed to her what I was trying to accomplish.She put in her truthful, professional input, and with that, we were able to come to a mutual agreement of what we need to do, and how to accomplish it. In a sense my hair was a slight color correction, being we are going over my old color and trying to achieve a more softer, natural look. I was told from Michelle it will take perhaps another session or two, to ultimately achieve my desired look. And for my first time in taking a step forward to that perfect color, I can certainly say there is already a huge difference. My hair already has a softer look, and feels great. Michelle also gave me some additional education on proper hair care, which is always greatly appreciated. I also love that they use Kerstase hair products! This line is amazing! So let me start by saying that I went to this place for over two years and have left several generous tips alongside the exorbitant price they expect you to pay for the same quality you can get at a beauty school for half the price. But it being Walnut Creek and not wanting to commute too far, I thought, why not? There's plenty of other overpriced hair salons in Walnut Creek and this one is probably no different than the rest. I was wrong. While reading this review please note that it costs around $150 dollars to get highlights here. I don't mind paying that much to get my hair dyed (or even more!) I just expect quality in return. After you make your way through the front door you will have to journey a bit to make it to the front desk, or should I say "back desk" (which is oddly placed towards the end of the salon) to check in. The first thing you will notice is how rude the "back desk" is. They don't even look you in the eye while speaking to you and sound really aloof. They give off a vibe that they're either too good for you or they really hate their job. Or maybe both. I don't know, that's their problem. I know you can tell from the other reviews that I'm not the only one who has dealt with this issue and for the price you pay here the owner should be competent enough to hire people who can pretend to act like they want to be there. I was placed with the stylist Katelyn. I originally had light brown hair and wanted to continually add more and more highlights with the end goal that it would be eventually be completely blonde. The stylist knew this and every time I went in added more and more highlights. So let me tell you about my recent experience. I arrive twenty minutes late (but I called) because life happens and there is traffic. I know I'm not the first late client she had, and I am definitely sure that I'm not the last (her next and last appointment had to reschedule to a later time because she was running late even). Mind you I had to cancel things in order to make this appointment and I was really looking forward to it. It was not intentional. 1st thing I do is apologize. The stylist gives me a poor attitude about it and tells me that she doesn't have enough time now for full highlights. I say that's fine, just do full color. I point out the blonde in my hair and say I want it like this. She said that's too much maintenance for me (who are you to decide what's too much for me?) and that she was going to make it lighter. I said I wanted blonde. She mentioned that if we had enough time she could put more highlights in. Then she disappears for 30 minutes without a word while I sit in the chair waiting. I assume she went to eat her dinner or something? Don't tell me you're short on time if you have enough time to do highlights if you disappear for 30 minutes. I know she wasn't mixing colors either as she simply used the same bottle the stylist the next to me used when she was done. When she came back she finally started doing her job. She was informed by one of the back desk people that her last appointment was coming in an hour late and this further enraged her. I assume that she forgot that she said she would put more highlights in my hair if she had enough time but her 30 minute break already proved that she didn't care at that point. Fast forward to the time my hair is finished. I should mention that they will push you EVERY SINGLE TIME to get your hair blow dried for an additional 30 dollar fee. I blow dried it myself to see what my hair would turn out like and I was flabbergasted. It was awful. The top of my hair is now a dull ORANGE. I never had my hair completely dyed before so I was nervous but I trusted the stylist and now I have orange hair! You can imagine my embarrassment as having a mix of orange and blonde hair is definitely not what I wanted and looks ridiculous. I went in the bathroom to cry. I called my mother and told her what happened and she phoned her asking to redo it and Katelyn refused. Katelyn admitted that she knew it was not what I wanted and decided to do what she liked instead. Basically said "too bad" that she messed up my hair and didn't want to do blonde because bleaching the entirety of it would be too much maintenance for me and bad for my hair. 1) There are other ways to get blonde than bleaching with actual BLONDE DYE (it exists but it's pricey - don't be thrifty at the price I'm paying you). 2)You are being paid to perform a service. Not do what you want! The worst part is she said she wasted an hour of her time doing my hair. You don't have to live with orange hair now. You don't have to wear a hat to go to places now. I do. Is this how you treat a loyal customer for 2 years? Don't use this place. Like I said there are many overpriced salons in Walnut Creek that can do the same and better. Or better yet, go to a beauty school and get better treatment than at this façade of a high quality salon. read more

First let me say it's always an odd experience for a homely, ugly guy like me to be getting his hair cut in a "primped to the teeth" toney Walnut Creek salon. I always feel a bit like that Sesame Street "one of these things is not like the others" when I walk into the artfully designed entry, as the typical clientele consists of The Beautiful People of Walnut Creek (if you know what I mean). But Julie Brun (the owner) has been cutting my hair for over a decade (I've been with her through 3 salons or more) and she's the only person I trust to cut my hair. Asian hair can be a bit of a mystery to the uninitiated stylist, and I've had a few questionable experiences before I found Julie. But for years now I've simply sat in the chair and told Jules to do whatever she wants to my hair (literally), and I've never had a less than stellar result. As a side-benefit, as a full-blooded male I have to say the salon is populated with some of the hottest stylists I've ever seen, which doesn't hurt. But the reason I've never thought of going elsewhere is Julie's artistry as a stylist. EDIT: I'm updating my original review to five stars. Why? Because as I said originally, I'm a guy and totally out of touch with what top-tier salon prices are these days. Phoenix is one of the elite salons - possibly the top dog - in downtown Walnut Creek. If you're looking for the best, you'd be hard pressed to find better in the East Bay. read more

Saida for color!!! I moved to the Bay Area 2 years ago, from one of the hair meccas of the world... LA, so I was worried I wouldn't be able to find the same quality stylist up here. I read a bunch of reviews, found Saida and I haven't strayed since. And even though I've now moved an hour away, I still go to her. She makes good recommendations but is also great about listening to specific directions. And to note, I developed really dry hair because of my hypothyroidism and so I also love that I can ask her my random hair questions and ideas and she always has an informative answer. My hair is so much healthier and softer now!! And she is the friendliest and nicest person to hang out with for those 2-3 hours. Also, the salon has a great atmosphere... lots of light and big windows, modern design, coffee/tea bar with snacks, and friendly front desk people. I had followed my hairdresser to this salon. Considering the management ( owner) I would not recommended this establishment. There r plenty of places to go. I'm sorry to have lost my beautician but found another two doors down where I've been getting my hair colored who also left Phoenix to go elsewhere. From what I've heard this place is closing. This is my response to how the owner responded to my above post. Well, for people reading this I had the decency at first to say something simple and not get into the details since I think that's not polite and inappropriate. I will go point by point. Here we go.....the truth as it happened. Accurate....I was waiting in the parking lot. As I might add everyone does what I did. I've been coming here for 4 years and that is the way people wait for a spot when there r zero spots. U wait patiently for someone to leave the salon. I always show up early so I have about 15 minutes to wait I was not in a hurry. I was waiting in the lot and to the side of me is a car ,on the street not in the lot , I assume waiting too. With a startle this woman is banging and screaming at the top of her lungs on my passenger window. I open the window to this woman I've never seen yelling , " I am the owner and u r blocking me from getting my space". Using this business we know there's a space for the owner and of course I didn't use it. I said okay I'll move out and then move back in. She said nothing about 4 spaces anywhere. What she did tell me is no u won't u can't park and wait. I said but all the spaces r filled I'm not blocking anyone. This is what clients do they wait for next space. Nothing she said was in a polite manner. She was screaming at me! She did not say anything in a polite manner. She never apologized about anything. She just told me to leave and find parking elsewhere. Well that's when I said everywhere else u have to pay....r u going to pay for it? That is when this individual went off on me. She stated to me...her exact words...."you are barred from ever coming in here". I was shocked! She never indicated MAYBE I shouldn't come in...she told me I was barred from ever coming in. Is this really a professional way to act towards people that pay for your service. To think that my hair stylist is renting a space at her establishment. That she has the nerve to take business away from my stylist which has nothing to do with her. My stylist is renting space and she should be the only person that would ever tell me to leave. The worst of all of this is the blatant statement about me saying I would leave my stylist. Seriously, I adore my stylist and she knows I'd never ever do anything to lose that connection. Wow.....what a horrific thing to say. The one statement which is relevant and I agree with is after she told me to park elsewhere ....and gave me a piercing look when I said ....R u going to pay for my parking...I did put up my hand in a fist. That's when she told me I was barred.. All I can tell u is that I think very highly of my stylist. I'd never ruin that relationship. If she goes elsewhere I will follow. As I'm writing this I feel it's so Highschool ,child like. But after I wrote a short response w/o going into detail I felt I had to respond to what was intimated from the owners to my first post. I couldn't let that just pass! But do note people reading this. This same day where my colorist works I found someone that cuts curly hair. She did a great job I am pleased. I have no regrets.. FOR A SECOND TIME: these owners tell me the above statements from me r not true....everything stated above is factual. The yelling at me is factual, stating I was banned is factual, and so on and on. Every word I wrote is a fact. if they want to twist my statements and say they are untrue then Anytime you wish to pay for me to take a lie detector test and publish the results here I state right now I will do so.
