place was pure crazy! I dropped off my camera November 16...said it would take about a week to fix a minor problem, said to call to see if it was done. I called, they said a few more days, called again...they said it would take longer and that they will call me back. they never called back, i had to call after two weeks to see what happened. Its January by this point, They said they were still waiting for a part (THEY NEVER called me for any updates on the status of my camera) i always had to call to see what was going on. I leave for 3 weeks to go outta town in JAN, I come back 1st week if feb! and its still not done....ITS been almost 3 MONTHS! with no updates, no calls, NOTHING! i asked to get my camera back and they still charged my 15 bucks just for looking at it.....PLACE IS GARBAGE! read more

After readings reviews of Photo Tech on Yelp, I went to Photo Tech with my relatively new malfunctioning digital point-and-shoot camera. I paid the $10.00 estimate which would count towards whatever cost would incur for fixing my camera should I decide that to be okay. I called the following day and was told that the camera had to sent out for repair, etc. and that the cost would be nearly $150.00 for repair. I declined that less-than-generous cost. What do I think of Photo Tech? I think that they're probably not as good as many of the posters herein state and I strongly doubt I would ever contact Photo Tech again. Oh, while their address states between 8th and 9th Avenues the store is much closer to the 9th Avenue corner which made my shlep there from 8th Avenue even shleppier. read more

I have gone to Photo Tech twice in recent months for Nikon repairs and so far, their service has been excellent. The first was a relatively straightforward but delicate task (clean a sensor) but the second was a dropped Nikon D810! They diagnosed the D810 within a day, gave a cost/time estimate and stuck to it, except having to extend a few days for a delayed part. I am very pleased to have access to such a professional group for my camera/lens repairs and maintenance. Highly recommended. read more

Photo Tech did an amazing job repairing my Nikon D3200. I dropped is shattering the screen while also managing to break a few other internal parts. Repairs are typically completed in 3-5 days but i asked if it were possible to get it done closer to the 3 day mark as I am leaving for vacation. I dropped my camera off on a Monday, received my quote on a Tuesday and they called me on the weds saying my camera was ready for pick up. Amazing! read more

Took my camera in today to get the sensor cleaned. The price for that was comparable to Nikon's service center in Melville - cheaper actually if you factor in the shipping or toll and gas to drive there. However, the main reason I chose Photo Tech was that they were able to do the cleaning in just 1 hour as opposed to 7-10 days with the manufacturer. These guys are magicians. I have a pretty expensive piece of Konica Minolta glass (70-200/2.8 G SSM), the lens produced by the company which is now long gone from the photo business and which served as the foundation for Sony photo business. Sony produces the same lens, but when my lens failed on me they refused to service it, claiming the lack of spare parts. I've tried to send it to KEH, Precision Camera, contacted a few other repair companies across the US and all to no avail. Then I found a reference to some other company on DPreview forums, contacted them and they told me that they can try, but I'd better talk to Photo Tech first because they are the experts. And indeed they are. A couple of weeks later I have my lens, perfectly in shape, no problem with "spare parts" and I'm happy as ever. I really missed this piece, even bought a cheaper Sony alternative (70-200/4 FE) and happily sold it a few days ago. The price for the service was totally OK, I've paid about $400 total including shipping both ways. They ship with FedEx ground (not sure if insured, I guess not) and it takes a while. Some people in reviews below complain about communications. I'm totally happy with their comms, they were quick and honest at initial handshake and very responsive after I've sent them the lens. read more

Phototech is an amazing service, I literally cannot thank this business enough. My Sony A7Sii screen shattered when I dropped it and I called all my local camera shops and they said "it would need to be sent into Sony's repair center". So I decided to skip the middle men and call the "repair" center, I am not going to say their name here because I do not want them to get any advertising at all. They told me it would be $375, for them to even look at my camera!!!!!!! They then refused to give me a quote for how much it would cost to fix the screen and said it would be anywhere between 4-16 weeks. So naturally I was not happy, so I did some more digging and found the only other licensed Sony repair shop in the US on Sony's page, however the way the positioned it is that Phototech only services NY customers. I live in CO, so I call them, they are extremely helpful, give me a quote of $150-275, say it will take 1-2 weeks and I send it in. I get my invoice for $233, and have my camera back in 1 week! I almost cried, I am so happy I found this business. If you are reading this and need camera repairs, send them to Photo Tech. Don't waste your money, don't waste your time. Took my camera to get it fixed b/c it had fell and casing was cracked. They charged me $10 estimate fee, and believe it would cost about $85 to fix b/c they needed to re-order a part. They called me later and said they couldn't fix the camera b/c the part was out-of-stock. I went to go pick-up the camera, and they had fixed it w/out having to replace a part. COuld have charged me $80 but they didn't. I will definitely take all my cameras there to fix. They were thorough, professional, and good customer service all along the way. read more

i had dropped my canon 70-200 "L" lens and started to receive a err 01. they took a quick look at it and charged $15 to do a diagnostic. the quote came in at about $350 - a little lower than i had expected (people online had reported between $350-$500 to fix such an issue) they were able to fix it within 5/6 business days. they did a fantastic job! the lens works like it was new. i think the best part of getting my lens fixed here was the warranty - covered for up to 1 year (if i remember correctly) after service and even protected from accidental drops for up to 30 days. they were straight forward and easy to deal with. read more

Not the happiest. According to this yelp page their address is on 34th street and they open at 8pm. On their actualy company website they have two stores one in Union Square and a sister store under the name Chrysler Camera on 34th street which is still listed on Photo Tech's site as opening at 8am. I went to the Union Square store as I work in Union Square. It was closed and boarded up. I then called the 34th street store and they are not yet open. So now I'm more than confused and I haven't even been to the store. What is the actual location and when do they actually open. Was hoping to drop off for a cleaning before work but I guess not now. read more

I love taking photos. You can imagine how I felt when there was a smudge on my lens that made my photos look unprofessional and messy. I have a care plan from Best Buy but was worried they would send my camera to Canon and I'd be without a camera for a good couple of months. With the holidays coming up, I decided to research the possibility of getting my camera looked at (and fixed) locally. I went to Photo Tech on a Saturday afternoon and an hour later, my camera lens was cleaned and back in my possession. This is amazing, the staff is knowledgeable and loves cameras and camera people. The interaction was a complete waste of my time and their time. And it cost $25 for the pleasure. I brought in a Nikon D800 that had stopped working after getting caught in the rain. In retrospect it was an error to mention the rain. They asked for $25 to investigate the camera and provide an estimate. A day later I get an estimate that includes all sorts of things like replacing the card holder and such that clearly work just fine. I called and they said that when they open it up they might find more issues. I asked if they had even opened it up in the first place. They had not. So the estimate was purely based on my saying "water damage". No investigation. No looking. It was pure theater. They named a price so high that of course I would never have the work done. This seems a stupid way for them to make $25. If they had said at the start that water damaged cameras are not worth fixing or will cost $500+ then we could have ended there. Instead I spent a couple of hours getting to and from their place and spent $25. Just completely bush-league stuff. I gave two stars instead of one because they actually returned my camera (with the screws untouched). read more

I recently had these guys repair my out of warranty Sony a7ii. Believe it or not the camera seems to be working better than new!! Obviously these guys took the time and effort to adjust and clean every aspect of this camera's functions making better than straight out of the box. I would definitely be going back to them again when the time calls for it. read more

My 3 years old Nikon D80 still works very well. Including sport, low light and HDR pictures. I brought it for cleaning and maintenance. Had to pay $27.22 estimation fee. They came out with some $400+ of replacements, saying "you have to replace this and that and that.." I don't think so. Camera works! I have been told that we have "a difference of opinions". Having been a customer of Photo Tech for three decades, I had found their work reliable, if a bit pricey. No more. They'll have to do without my business from now on. I recently discovered a circular blotch on many of the pictures taken with my Nikon D610, starting shortly after its sensor was cleaned (at a cost of about $70, including tax) last year. Suspecting that this was a manufacturing defect, I called Photo Tech to ask if they had noticed this problem with other D610's so I could return it to Nikon for service. Somebody who identified himself as Paul, the manager, didn't have much of an answer but kindly (or so I thought) offered to re-clean it for free. But when I brought it in for service and explained the situation to an older woman working behind the counter there, she informed me that the last cleaning was quite a while ago and they would have to charge me a "discounted" price of $40 to redo it. No matter that I had had a lengthy conversation with Paul and was completely transparent about the situation, or that Photo Tech had all the information they needed about me in their system. In fact, when I told her that I had been a customer for thirty years, her answer was, in effect, that I should know what their policies are. So I told her to give the discount to somebody else and asked for my camera back. Well, I spent my valuable time schlepping all the way over to their remote location on the West Side of Manhattan only to be subjected to what I consider dishonorable business conduct. Oddly enough, Photo Tech has a long history of whining about the manufacturers depriving them of warranty and other repair business. Maybe they were onto something about places like that. Extremely happy I went to Photo Tech Repair. Naturally, I called around the city for quotes. Not only did they respond first, the next closest response was almost 24 hours later, but they had the cheapest quote, the fastest turnaround, and were friendly to boot. When I brought my camera in they said it'd take roughly 5 days to replace the shutter, but they turned it around in 3! Let me put that in perspective by saying other shops said it would take about a month to get the part and get around to it. Soooo, yeah, I'm pretty happy about my choice. Love the service! My camera managed to collect debris and needed to be professionally cleaned. The staff were efficient in submitting the paper work and were clear on the cost of the service and when it would be ready. Upon pick up, I couldn't believe it was the same camera. Needed my lens fixed when I accidentally bumped it. They were very helpful and quick. Just dropped it off with deposit and told me to call Monday for price. Got the repair quote and it lens was fixed in about 4 days in my case. I like the year warranty that come with the lens repair but I'm not planning on have the need to ruin the lens again but glad to know it is there just in case. Everything was smooth and really the only complaint is the hours of operation which is only M-F and they are all the way on 9th and 36th. I guess you have do what you got to do to repair the lens. read more

Recently I had my second trip to Photo Tech, a mom and pop shop near Union Square. And once again, they surpassed my expectations. Same guy Abraham aka Abe was extemely helpful. My Nikon D40 camera slipped and fell recently - the lens wasn't locking back onto the camera. I took it in, thinking it would be a big ordeal to get it fixed, got an estimate of $44 - and it was fixed the next afternoon. They don't work on anything before you approve the estimate. And if there is something else they find, they will call to advise you. Nicely cleaned and returned to me as good as can be. I like their honesty and work ethic. Good people. Definitely don't want another camera to break but if it does, I know where I'll be going. Also they have a full cleaning of a camera for $40. read more

Forget this place. Forget about your camera. That's what I had to do. I brought my Nikon FM twice for repairs and each time they claim it should work but it doesn't. I paid $130. They were nice enough about giving me new film for the one they destroyed but what's the point? After the second go-round, the camera was more broken than when I first brought it in. I do not write many reviews, but I had to do it here. I came in to have my lens fixed, worried I would get ripped off. I was greeted right away by a very friendly man. I explained what happened with my lens and he began to examine my lens. He went to the back and 8 mins later he came back and gave me my lens back and said, "fixed". I asked how much and he said nothing. All they had to do was readjust a lever inside and there was no cost. I know now where to go to get honest repair in nyc. Photo Tech rocks. I live on Guam and finding a company that will work with me can be a challenge since a lot of people do not realize that Guam is part of the United States. I sent in two lenses, which needed new motors. These came back in a timely manner looking and working like new. The packing job was excellent. Their communication is excellent which is critical since I needed to provide specific shipping instructions.Going forward, I sent in several more lenses, one of which I thought needed a major repair, but I was told that this was not needed as only the focus ring and rubbers needed replacing and at a very reasonable cost to boot. I also inquired about repairing a D2X and was given advice that the repair would be more that the price of a used working body. These are very honest folks to say the least. read more

I am extremely pleased with my experience at Photo Tech. I inherited a nice Sony ZA 24-70mm, which has unfortunately been sitting in a basement for the last few years. Over time, dust has somehow been introduced to the internal elements of the lens. This isn't usually something people get concerned about, but this was a lot of dust and it was affecting picture quality. I stopped by Photo Tech today during my lunch break for a quote. The gentleman behind the counter took my lens back for appraisal and came back 5 minutes later with a completely dust-free lens. I was in utter shock! I was advised that there was fungus growing in the lens, which I suspected, and that I could come back when I had more time for a full quote to remove it. In the meantime, I have a working lens and I have found my go-to spot for lens repair. I will definitely go back for the fungus removal and if ever I damage a piece of equipment.
