I had used Photo Tech for several years with good results. Then I took my Canon 5D Mark IV in for sensor cleaning and they made it much worse. Brought it back, no improvement. I had to send it to Canon who determined that the sensor was ruined and needed to be replaced. Cost me a fortune. Photo Tech denied causing it. Will never go back there. read more

I just paid over $500 for repairing my camera at PhotoTech. Now, less than a month later my memory card was broken inside of the camera and there is a piece I can't take out. Warranty for the last repair is not relevant. I was quoted $415 for repairing this. They refused to try and just take the part out (I would happily pay their labor cost which is $109). Said they definitely need to replace the whole slot even though it is fully functioning now with the broken card in. The cost of this part in the estimate is $298. An original NEW memory slot for my camera on eBay is $12. They refused to change the new part if I bring it, even if I take responsibility that it is working. Making hundreds percentage profit on the account of a loyal client is not cool. update: I have to say that the store manager was very kind and respectful with me when I came to pick up the camera. And I got the estimate's cost back. I still think that the part is overpriced in hundreds of percentage, and overall the quote was not reasonable for a customer who just paid over $500 to fix the same camera. After a horrible experience with a warranty Nikon repair (years ago), I researched an alternate facilities well regarded by working professionals in the NYC area. At the time, Photo Tech and Chrysler Camera Repair rose to the top of the list (and were an authorized Nikon Repair Centers at the time). Although Nikon no longer allows warranty repairs by third-parties, Photo Tech and Chrysler are still thriving. Over the years, they have been accessible, reasonable with their pricing (significantly more than Nikon), and easy to communicate with. Recently, I had a 2020 Nikon body serviced under an after-market warranty. As was my previous experience with dozens of repairs, the work was done competently and timely. Just to give you some background, I've been getting my gear repaired with PhotoTech since about 2015. They have been great with their estimates and their actual repairs. Recently I shipped my camera to be repaired for an estimate of $225. They analyzed the camera and provided a cost of $425.00 to repair it. I declined the repair and asked for the camera to e shipped back to their NYC store. When I picked up the camera, I checked to see if the camera works and nothing. The battery was gone. I sent in the camera with a battery, lens cap, memory card and strap. The battery was not returned. I complained and the guy gave me a battery and reminded me that I signed the form that I acknowledge that they're not responsible for any accessories. Of course I signed but I expect dignity for a business to return my accessories as they received them. I mean... what do you guys do with all of those accessories. I later checked the memory card slot and they took that as well. I'm all about supporting small businesses but to an extent that they ethically work for their clients and not pillage their accessories. Horrible experience and I'm really saddened by this since I've been telling people to go to Phototech for their repairs. read more

Great shop - fast quick and in a hurry. Was in Scotland the previous week and was spending time in NYC before heading home to Southern California, While in Scotland, I had banged my camera lens on a metal fence and broke my lens off my Nikon d3300 camera, needless to say, I had some camera short comings, heading into New York. I came into the shop expecting two things; slow service (if any) and to be gouged. To my surprise he quoted me a less than $60 price and it would be ready in 2 hours. Done done and done. I would never go here again and you shouldn't either. Dropped off my camera for an inspection to confirm if it had a defect or not. It's under warranty but Rich said someone would call me the next day with the results or assessment. I did not get a call so I called around 6pm and got the rudest woman on the planet on the phone after being put on hold and hung up on the first time I called. This rude woman proceeds to tell me my camera is being repaired. I said 'whoa wait a minute. I never authorized that! Someone was supposed to call me. That's what Rich said. He never said they would not call me and just go ahead and crack it open and start working on it!' I need the camera for a class coming up so I need to decide if I want to do any repair now or after the class. If he had told me they would automatically do a repair without consulting me I would have taken the camera back home with me right then and there because it's still useable and brought it back another time. This woman had no empathy and got defensive. She tells me 'well this is our standard protocol for warranty repairs so what do you want ME to do about it?!' I told her the first thing she should have said was to apologize for the confusion for the fact Rich told me one thing and they are doing something different. Obviously I was upset and she should have better sense than to get upset back at me all because I'm upset at what they are doing. That's someone who SHOULD NOT BE WORKING THERE if the management had any sense whatsoever. Her actions alone tell me I would never want to deal with that place again after this. Finally she goes and checks and comes back and tells me 'actually they haven't started the repair yet it is sitting on the repair technicians' desk.' So I'm wondering why she said they had in the beginning then without checking? She also tells me I can call tomorrow to talk to the manager or to Rich. I told her I want no one to touch my camera until they speak with me about the analysis and prognosis and also that I would try to make a personal trip into the store as well. I am so angry that not only can they not do what they told me they would do but then have such a lousy uncaring person on the other end of the phone who feels I have no right to be upset and it's not her job to apologize for her company's missteps. Having worked in retail in the past, I have zero patience or tolerance for shitty customer service and people who do not understand the concept of the customer experience. One simple apology and effort to get to the bottom of it and try to resolve it would have helped alleviate so much of my anger but instead I got a defensive bitter woman with no care how customers are treated. read more

We rarely fix shit these days. If your computer gets old, get a new one. If your TV is crapping out, replace it. It's actually cheaper to throw out a printer than get it repaired. Here is a place that fixes things. And they fix things, namely cameras, that are increasingly moving towards the category of "just buy a new one." Which is sad. I wouldn't know what makes a great violin or classic guitar or why a sushi chef spends hours caring for their favorite knife. But I do know a good camera and lenses deliver amazingly better photos than hoped for via most other portable devices. My junk needed cleaning. Dust, dirt, hair and other things will eventually work their way into any mechanics. I was somewhat resigned to think that anyplace still offering camera cleaning would be a single guy and dustbuster. The folks at Photo Tech Repair Service shocked the heck out of me. They are all about camera repair and cleaning, nothing really else. I figured they'd know what lense I should next buy, but they told me they don't sell... just fix. I dropped off a Nikon camera and 3 lenses, all in dirty, dirty shape. They guy joked, "Be aware this might all look brand new when you pick it up." And it all looked brand new when I picked it up. They even replaced 6 missing lens caps for free. It's attention to details like this that really distinguish a place. Please support them. They are a NY gem. read more

A much-needed update to my most recent experience at Photo Tech: My prior review will address the condition that I sent my Canon 60D in, as well as the immediate, inoperable state that it was returned in. Unfortunately, I spent the following weekend without a functioning camera, but received an email late Sunday evening from Michael N., Photo Tech's Operations VP, addressing my initial complaint. He apologized for the error, and encouraged me to bring in the camera so they could look into it. The following morning, I returned to Photo Tech's office and attempted to explain the situation to the representative at the desk, whom I had never spoken to before. I was more than slightly frazzled, and it wasn't until Michael came to the desk and introduced himself that I was able to breathe easier. He took a look at the camera and tested a few of the buttons and dials, apologizing again for the condition it had been returned in; he promised that one of their technicians would look into it promptly and was willing to give me a loaner Canon in the indefinite interim I was camera-less. That afternoon, I received a call from Michael letting me know that a defective cover was at fault, and that after his initial assessment, the camera seemed to be fully operable. When I asked if I could drop by later that day before they closed to pick it up, he said it wouldn't be an issue, especially as he'd keep an eye on it until then to check the battery drain issue. When I returned to Photo Tech after leaving work, I was informed that a one-year warranty had been granted to my camera, which is a policy they don't typically give for partial repairs. I haven't had any issues with my camera since, and everything has been operating smoothly. I do commend Photo Tech for handling well a situation that could have become pretty disastrous (I had already started mentally preparing myself to buy a new DSLR), and no, I wouldn't rule out a return for a future service. read more

Jose is one of the pre-eminent experts in fixing old Polaroid cameras -- even the Impossible Project uses him. He is a true maestro with over 30 years of experience. I brought a lens here to get a repair estimate and was impressed with the smoothness of the operations. However, they then ended up quoting me over $300 in repairs for an $800 lens, saying many parts needed to be replaced. Inherently distrustful of any sort of repair place where you're at their mercy (e.g. Auto mechanics) , I said I'd think about it and looked for another place for a second opinion. My search lead me to Martys Camera repair in Queens, where they replaced one part for $120 and it works flawlessly. I have no doubt that phototech does good work but they also make up issues and overcharge to fix them. I'd go to martys every time now. read more

Easy to find, and a large and professional presence. What I'm not thrilled about is the final product. I dropped my Nikon in the ocean while I was on vacation. It sustained heavy water and salt damage. I took it in to Photo Tech, and the technican advised me that it the camera was destroyed beyond repair....until I mentioned that the loss was covered by an insurance policy. Surprise, surprise, he then said that it could be repaired for a cost which conveniently enough equalled the coverage amount. My camera was fixed, and it works, but the quality of pictures is off, and nowhere near as good as it had been before the repair. I wish this business had had the integrity to abide by its original evaluation, which would have allowed me to recover the cost (so I could buy a new camera) of the camera from my insurer, rather than insisting on 'repairing' it - which it was simply unable to do. There were also deadline mixups requiring me to go back and forth to the store (and it has very inconvenient bankers' hours). That's not the end of the world, but another drawback to this establishment. SUGGESTION: In a situation involving the above, I'd recommend going to another similar service and simply get verification that the item is beyond repair. That way you can recover the money from the insurer and purchase a brand new item. read more

I used Yelp to find the best camera repair shop, and this is it. They replaced the LCD screen on my camera perfectly in a very short time. I had emailed for an estimate on Saturday, when they are closed. Before receiving the estimate, on Monday, I brought the camera to the shop, and was charged for the repair. Then, I received the emailed estimate (from Mike) which was lower than the amount I was charged. When I went to pick up the camera, there was a note on the ticket to charge the lower amount, rather than the higher amount that I had already paid. The difference was refunded. Took my Canon S95 here for repair and was blown away by their professionalism and integrity. I came into their shop one day without an appointment and Hiram told me he would take a look at the camera to determine if the issue with the lens required major repair. Hiram brought my camera to the technician and in five minutes my S95 was as good as new. Turns out the issue was minor, so Hiram didn't even charge me for the quick fix. I had a really positive experience here. My wedding photographer recommended I come here to get my camera serviced. It just needed the sensor cleaned. This place seemed reputable so I felt comfortable and safe leaving my camera with them. People at the counter were also friendly and knowledgeable. I dropped off my camera at around 12ish so there was maybe a 15 min wait to be helped. I have a Sony nex-5n and they cleaned up the sensor within an hour or 2. And it felt reasonably priced. Last winter, my old 35mm Canon AE-1 Program mysteriously jammed and would no longer work AT ALL. I was devastated because I've used this camera since I was about 10 years old. I brought it into to Photo Tech, they took a quick look, discovered both the shutter and lens were jammed and/or broken, and all repairs would cost about $170. I know this camera so well and it has such sentimental value that I couldn't fathom just buying a replacement off Ebay (even though it'd be a lot cheaper, because it's a pretty common camera) that may or may not even work. So I forked over the money and about a week later, my camera was back in my hands, good as new. My repair came with a 6-month warrantee, which was great because after shooting a few rolls, I noticed a light leak through the lens that they repaired again for no extra cost. My warranty company sent my Fuji X-T2 to Photo Tech for repair. The hinge on the LCD screen was missing screws and did not close on the camera body. The camera was repaired, cleaned, including the sensor, and all functions tested. It was returned quickly. It looks and functions like new. When I opened the return box, I was also happy to find my wrist ID which obviously fell into the box when I was packing. It was wrapped with care. Great service all around. read more

Though their website states that they do service Olympus, I made a special trip to this store only to be told it is in fact a different store location (confusingly, with a different store name - Chrysler Camera Repair) that serves Olympus. Unfortunately I was in a HUGE time crunch to get my camera fixed before a trip abroad and had gone out of my way to Photo Tech, just to be redirected uptown. From reading other reviews, it is clear that I'm not the only one who has had this experience. Sent in my high-end professional camera for a hot shoe repair under manufacturer's recall/warranty. Service was done quickly. However, when I got my camera, while the hot shoe was indeed fixed, all the controls on the back of the camera including the LCD screen weren't working. The camera can't focus because I have focusing assigned to the AF-On button. I guess the "Check and adjust all functions to specifications" is just a line item on the work order sheet. If that was actually done, the non-working LCD display, the inability to take a properly focused photos, inability to review photos, inability to go into the menu, etc. should have been dead-giveaways. Clearly, this part was overlooked. There's simply no excuse for this. None. Completely failure. When I called, there were no apologies. Just a question about whether I used another battery or not. Then just a terse "Yeah, bring it back". Well, I shipped the thing to you. How about a free shipping label? Had to ask for that. I have zero tolerance for things like this. It's a good thing it's the off-season for me. Let's see what they do to make this right. read more

Photo Tech Employees are the Camera Repair Wizards! I first made use of their repair services on a lens issue with my Pentax 35mm SLR back in December 2000, and still go to them whenever my point-and-shoot Canon Powershot / Digital Elph cameras have mechanical lens / system card issues, which tends to happen after a year or two of use. I have had no issues with Photo Tech not being able to fix any camera that I have brought in for whatever malfunction it had been experiencing. Also, their repair turnaround time is reasonable and they have met or exceeded their estimate time. Exceeded, as in they have fixed my camera sooner than what they initially quoted. Owner, Paul N., is quite responsive to customers' needs. That is one HUGE advantage of a small mom & pop business over big box stores. My only qualms with this establishment are that they can improve their hours (it's hard for me to visit since I work outside NYC): M-F: 8am-6pm Sa: 10am-3pm (Closed in July & Aug on Sa) Su: Closed I tend to prefer to fix my broken cameras if they're fixable rather than plunking a little bit more for a newer model. These guys get an A+ for service. I brought my Canon SD880 in for warranty service (my 1 year was almost up), because of a lens issue, and they told me they cover that type of service. They checked out the camera and warned me that it could potentially be water/sand damage, which is not covered under warranty, but they would check it out anyway. I was leaving for vacation in a couple weeks, and they told me it would be done within a week if it was fixable. A few days later, they called me and told me that the mechanic checked it out, and it was water/sand damage (so I would have to pay), but if they shipped it to Canon, Canon might just fix it for free. However, it would take a few weeks. I told them I was going on vacation, and they said that I could come in and get a loaner point and shoot for free. I went in, got a loaner (which was not an amazing, but still pretty serviceable point-n-shoot), and then went off on vacation. When I came back, i received a call from them - my camera had been fixed by Canon for free! I laud them for a great job of communicating everything along the way while also trying to do what was best for me financially. The free loaner didn't exactly hurt too. I have a Sony A390 with a Problem and contacted Sony, they referred me to their repair center BUT After Reading a Lot on Google on this Camera Repair shop, Reviews, Lots of Horrors. A few emails and BAM problem solved , They could have told me This & That ,But they gave me straight answer's said I could get a Good used Lens , far cheaper than the Cost of Repairing My Lens , So I had them do a Cleaning and clean the CCD Sensor, Fast turn Around , Thank You Rich , Frances M, and the Whole Photo Tech Team BRAVO !!! Disappointing customer service. Took my camera in on Tuesday, was told I'd be getting an invoice on Wednesday. No invoice the next day, so I ask again and I am told I'll get it the next day on Thursday. It was almost a week after that I got the invoice, and it was only because I reached out to them. They claimed an "unforeseen circumstance." Even if that was the case, I should have been let known of this delay rather than be ignored and disregarded. I came in with a broken lens -- the focus was not working at all on my canon T3. The next day they called me back and had fixed it. It works perfectly now, and the quoted price was just what they charged me. I came in around 4 or 5 pm both times and there wasn't much of a wait. A bit more so on the Monday than on the Tuesday when I picked it up, but nothing terrible. In fact, in Tuesday there were only two people waiting in front of me! Such quick service, and the staff was very friendly. I know this was probably an easy fix since this is a newer and very common camera, but I would definitely recommend this spot for repairs in the future. read more

So we now know that my Canon S400 does not bounce. Nope, it drops and smashes the LCD screen. Digital Screens are expensive to replace, and although the do it yourself instructions are out there on the net, I'd rather pay a professional. Well, I had to make another trip back here. My G10 fell off a table and the lens broke. I know, it was stupid and totally my fault, but I love this camera too much to let it go to waste. We've been around the globe, shot tens of thousands of photos, and I've worn the body down to raw aluminum in so many places. I know, my camera has seen a lot of action, but I can't justify (or afford) to drop $600 on the latest Canon G series. So I brought it back for a lens replacement, got the same quoted price as my first visit and I told them to go right to it! I received the same great guarantee on parts and workmanship and I'm back shooting again! What some people need to understand is that yes, for the less expensive consumer grade cameras, repairs can be quite costly and you may be better off purchasing a new camera. For prosumer and professional cameras, this is the place to go. When you have a camera that does everything you want it to, and you really take a liking to it, it is so much more cost effective to have the repair done than get a replacement. Plus the workmanship here is incredible and the overall experience was better than any repair shop I have been to, camera or otherwise. I have also sent a few of my SX-70 toting friends here for some major repairs and they have nothing but praise for the work that was done. If my first experience with Photo Tech wasn't so positive, I would never come back, but they have me, I'm a customer for life. This place is the best. read more
