I can't begin to explain how great Carlos is at repairing pianos. My 50-year old Steinway was in terrible shape after years of neglect, tens of moves, scratches and chips all over it. We kept the lid open for decades living in the deserts of the US, and there was so much dust in the piano that you could measure the thickness with a ruler. Carlos was very courteous in explaining all of the work that need to be done to bring it back to proper function. His prices were very reasonable. The piano was thoroughly cleaned, all oxidation was removed, it had a new hammer set put in, it was restrung and refinished. The price was about a third of what other less reputable restoration companies would have charged based upon their quotes. We negotiated the scope that I wanted, and we agreed on a price. Since I ended up having more done than I had originally planned, I only had about a third of the money. Carlos was willing to work with me to agree on payment terms where I paid a large amount a couple of weeks later and then the balance upon delivery. We wrote up the contract which he and I followed meticulously. No surprises, just two guys doing the right thing for each other and keeping our word to each other. The piano is essentially in factory fresh condition, and I couldn't be happier. It sounds as good as it has in the past 30 years, and perhaps in its entire history. We hired Carlos to move our Craigslist-purchased piano from McKinney to our home in North Dallas. He was so prompt for the pickup, he actually beat us there and was almost finished loading the piano by the time we arrived to the seller's home. He has a special trailer that is completely set up with straps and blankets to properly protect pianos as he moves them. Based upon his initial assessment of the piano during the delivery and our conversation as he was setting it up, we decided to hire Carlos for the piano's first tuning in about 10 years! The previous owner had maintained the exterior, but had not taken care of the mechanics of the vintage piano for many years. That first tuning is happening as I write this review...and I can report that Piano Restoration Center is going to be our 'go-to' resource for many years to come. I can hear the dramatic improvement in the acoustics and Carlos has taken the time to patiently demonstrate the equipment he uses for the tuning process. He showed me how far out of tune the piano was before he began, then demonstrated the level of improvement (not only recognizable to my ears, but verifiable on the equipment he uses to gauge the piano strings' vibrations) Carlos is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and professional in his demeanor. I have been working with Carlos for almost 7 years now. I brought a huge project to his shop in the beginning. It was an AB Chase upright that was built in 1878. That is 141 years old! It took nearly 2 years to complete the work necessary to bring the piano back to life. We took apart the entire piano and restored every part. What you need to know if you hire Carlos is that projects like this do take time. Especially with older pianos like mine. I thought a 2 year labor of love to add possibly another 300 years to the life of such a beautiful instrument was well worth it. Over the remaining time, Carlos and I have slowly worked on the tuning and minor issues related to the piano. What I have learned through Carlos and the piano itself is that owning a piano like this is a lifetime job and you need to treat it as such. Bringing pianos like this back to life are a joy. But they are also a lesson of patience and devotion. In the end I couldn't have picked a better guy to take this journey on. We contracted The Piano Restoration Center in January of 2018 to do a complete restoration of Baldwin, Model R Grand Piano. The owner, Carlos Farina told us that the restoration would take between 6 to 9 months. Mr. Farina picked up the piano and collected substantial amount of money as a down payment, as well as two additional payments. It has been 18 months now and we have not seen the piano or money.
