Pumpkin festival We…read moretook the kids for some fall family fun. $10 a person to explore the farm. They have a wagon ride through the woods, corn pit, hay slides, and many games. We took a trip through the corn maze that was easy to navigate for the kids. They have a food tent and beer available to purchase. Best part is the pumpkin lift. For $10 you get to take a shot at lifting as many pumpkins as you can.

Found my new produce stand at the WSM--done and done…read more I'm a CSA gal, Fresh Fork to be exact, but sometimes you just need some extra ingredients and that's where Rooted In Cleveland comes in. Here there is no question where your produce is coming from--most likely it's from across the street at Ohio City Farm! Yep: the farm that helps refugees find work and teaches them to farm to make money (Refugee Responce)... the farm space that helps people in need find fresh produce while also supplying local restaurants in Ohio City with tons of homegrown goodies. That farm! The stand has pretty much all seasonal items, but when I stopped by last week they had everything I was looking for. Herbs, root veggies, tomatoes, greens--yum! I'm not sure what the stand will look like in the winter months, but I'm sure they'll have something out there that's delicious. Their FB page says it best, "We're a seasonally and sustainably-oriented produce stand at the West Side Market providing local and organically-minded specialty produce." Prices were way cheaper than Dave's Supermarket and pretty on point with the rest of the stands. But what really stands out? No yelling or selling! That's right--no one at the stand will try to sell you or trick you into buying overly ripened produce they don't let you see first before they throw in a bag. In general, just picture this: You're fighting your way through the produce wing at WSM on a Saturday afternoon, then you turn the corner to suddenly find a peaceful place where you can take a breath of fresh air and buy bad ass local produce. It might have been the best money I have spending during these unprecedented times. Since they were having a 50% off sale for new users, I thought it was a calling for me to order a box! The process was easy and by the following week, I received my first box! I was so excited to open and unfold the mystery of produce option, I couldn't help but share the good news with all my girl friends! All produce that came in the box looked pretty normal and there were hardly any imperfections to the produce. The two hardest items to decide how to cook/incorporate into my everyday meals was the head of red cabbage and a bag of baby radish. I was hoping that the PIP recipe unveiled on Friday would help me use the red cabbage or baby radish, but it had nothing to do with either veggie, which was perfectly fine. Thank goodness Google exists! The box that I got lasted me 3 weeks, with some meals getting takeout, so it would be hard for me to commit to doing this long term. It is definitely harder to go through groceries when I am only feeding myself, but I think this is a great option for families. The company has a great mission and I am happy to have tried to support local where I can!

However, it hasn't saved me from being really disappointed with my large mixed boxes lately. I understand that it's basically a mystery box every time I receive one. But, do I really need 2 pints of cherry tomatoes? No, one pint would have been fine. And while I appreciate a great big homegrown cauliflower, I'm paying for all of the waste that comes along with it. On more than one occasion, the boxes have been filled with excessive "filler" produce. They're notorious for stuffing 2 bags of apples, 3 cucumbers, 2 huge spaghetti squash and loads of oranges in the boxes lately. I get that they're busy and trying to get the weight up on the boxes they pack, but c'mon! This is really aggravating, because I'm trying to support a local business. But, I'm knocking my delivery down to once a month, then possibly not at all if this trend continues.

They have barrel rides, pedal cars, corn maze, straw maze, corn bin, sand pit, playground, etc. You can pay extra to pick flowers, pick apples, or use the apple cannon. I wish the price was more inclusive. Like a family bundle that includes tickets, bag to apple pick, bucket of apples for the cannon, etc. then you just lay one price upfront. The apple cannon was a lot of fun and the kids had a great time. The event says it is open until 6. At 5 we decided to head up to the food truck and to get donuts and everything was closed up. They had a small stand inside with hot dogs and kettle corn. The place was really beautiful with the flowers and corn field plus cute picnic areas.
