Here there is no question where your produce is coming from--most likely it's from across the street at Ohio City Farm! Yep: the farm that helps refugees find work and teaches them to farm to make money (Refugee Responce)... the farm space that helps people in need find fresh produce while also supplying local restaurants in Ohio City with tons of homegrown goodies. That farm! The stand has pretty much all seasonal items, but when I stopped by last week they had everything I was looking for. Herbs, root veggies, tomatoes, greens--yum! I'm not sure what the stand will look like in the winter months, but I'm sure they'll have something out there that's delicious. Their FB page says it best, "We're a seasonally and sustainably-oriented produce stand at the West Side Market providing local and organically-minded specialty produce." Prices were way cheaper than Dave's Supermarket and pretty on point with the rest of the stands. But what really stands out? No yelling or selling! That's right--no one at the stand will try to sell you or trick you into buying overly ripened produce they don't let you see first before they throw in a bag. In general, just picture this: You're fighting your way through the produce wing at WSM on a Saturday afternoon, then you turn the corner to suddenly find a peaceful place where you can take a breath of fresh air and buy bad ass local produce. Yes, that was a bit of a run-on, but you get the point. Hint: It's near the Ohio City Blooms stand.

We took a trip through the corn maze that was easy to navigate for the kids. They have a food tent and beer available to purchase. Best part is the pumpkin lift. For $10 you get to take a shot at lifting as many pumpkins as you can.

Too many chemicals may have been used on them. Strawberries are number on on the Dirty Dozen list of produce with the most pesticide residue, and I thought that local ones would not have as many chemicals in them. We got a gal of cider, lemon snap cookies, chia seeds, & a frozen icee... which was nice since it was like 86F out there & we picked for an hour. They have a wide variety of apples to pick, and tons of trees so no problem finding perfect specimens. Some were out of season but still plenty of ripe ones to get. We got Yellow Delicious, Jonathans, JonaGolds, Granny Smith, Empire & maybe Fugi. It was $20 for a half bushel. Which turned into 45 apples for us but I picked lotsa huge ones so really like 60 normal sized apples. You can just buy bagged apples instead of picking. Also they have Hay rides & play area for weekends plus pumpkins for sale.

It might have been the best money I have spending during these unprecedented times. Since they were having a 50% off sale for new users, I thought it was a calling for me to order a box! The process was easy and by the following week, I received my first box! I was so excited to open and unfold the mystery of produce option, I couldn't help but share the good news with all my girl friends! All produce that came in the box looked pretty normal and there were hardly any imperfections to the produce. The two hardest items to decide how to cook/incorporate into my everyday meals was the head of red cabbage and a bag of baby radish. I was hoping that the PIP recipe unveiled on Friday would help me use the red cabbage or baby radish, but it had nothing to do with either veggie, which was perfectly fine. Thank goodness Google exists! The box that I got lasted me 3 weeks, with some meals getting takeout, so it would be hard for me to commit to doing this long term. It is definitely harder to go through groceries when I am only feeding myself, but I think this is a great option for families. The company has a great mission and I am happy to have tried to support local where I can!

However, it hasn't saved me from being really disappointed with my large mixed boxes lately. I understand that it's basically a mystery box every time I receive one. But, do I really need 2 pints of cherry tomatoes? No, one pint would have been fine. And while I appreciate a great big homegrown cauliflower, I'm paying for all of the waste that comes along with it. On more than one occasion, the boxes have been filled with excessive "filler" produce. They're notorious for stuffing 2 bags of apples, 3 cucumbers, 2 huge spaghetti squash and loads of oranges in the boxes lately. I get that they're busy and trying to get the weight up on the boxes they pack, but c'mon! This is really aggravating, because I'm trying to support a local business. But, I'm knocking my delivery down to once a month, then possibly not at all if this trend continues.

It was a bit dim on the inside but they had a nice small selection of various veggies for purchase. Also available were canned goods. I wanted the bread and butter pickles but I was on a mission for pumpkins and not pickles yesterday. Fire-wood is nicely chopped and for sale as well. There's a beagle that barks ferociously upon entry but wants nothing more than for you to pet it. Stop on by and support a small locale stand.
