I have eaten here several times before writing this review. The price is steep but it's an all you can eat right!?! Well the first round they bring out is a whole chicken (tasted just like Brookeshire's chicken) then they asked exactly how many pieces you want after that. Mind you we had a full table of people so we needed another plate but it felt as if we had a limit. The greens are from a can. The chicken and dumplings are made from leftover chicken the day or so before. Also you have to get your own drinks and clear your own table. This trip was awful. 1st the lady that takes your money as you enter was not nice or helpful. Was not impressed. Cashier was rude because we ask for separate ticket. She ask did we want ice cream. I didn't answer because I was on separate ticket. I guess she rang me up without and when I said, I would like ice cream she rudely said "I ask" and I said "you didn't ask me". I said oh ok, nevermind then. After she ran my card she ask if I wanted her to run my card again for the ice cream (I wasn't aware it wasn't included in the price"). I said no, thinking that was rediculous. What an interesting little place! If you didn't know it was there, you'd probably drive right past it like I have my entire life. It sits at the top of a hill, and you head down to the restaurant itself. In front, there's a tiny town museum (closed when we visited, but I peeked through the windows and can't wait to come back to explore). Across the parking lot, there's also a nature trail--beautiful, peaceful, and something I'd love to explore more on a future visit. Walking up to the restaurant feels like stepping back in time. You get that old-country vibe right away, and you just know the food's going to be good. You pay up front, then they bring unlimited amounts of homestyle dishes to your table--fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, greens, lima beans, and more. It really is incredible. The atmosphere is eclectic and full of history, with antique circus posters covering every wall. The story behind them is even better--Bubba, the man behind it all, followed the circus at just 15 years old, playing trumpet. That personal history really makes the place special. The only downside was the staff feeling a little put-off when we arrived about an hour before closing, but overall, the experience was unique and memorable. Food was hot, fresh and delicious. Ambiance is simple but the place is very clean. Service was fast and friendly. Troy, the Cashier, immediately made us feel at home. I rode for 2 hrs on a bus trip with 15 other senior citizens. When you come in this restaurant you pay for your food before you even get to sit down. After we were seated the manager asked for our receipts to make sure we all paid. That disrespect was unnecessary. The chicken was bland and the so-called greens were just floating in water. This all you can eat (AYCE) experience is a cool concept. This is not a place with multiple food choices cooked, and you pick through them to your heart's content. This place is like having your mom cook a bunch of food because your cousins are coming over, and she tells you to eat as much as you wish. Coming into this AYCE, you see a bunch of photos and posters of different circus events. You pay upon entering the place, and you are told to what table you'll eat at for the dining experience. Keep that in mind, because you can be placed with strangers. They ask if you want, white, dark, or mixed fried chicken. You are told where the cutlery and drinks are, at that is self-service the entire experience. Once you are situated, a cart is brought to your table with beans, greens, dumplings, mashed potatoes, fried chicken, biscuits, corn bread, and muffin. They have someone watching you eat and will check to see if you want anything else as you dine. When you are closed to being finished eating, you will be asked if you want dessert. That was peach cobbler. That's the entire dining experience. I was told that they only serve the same stuff daily. The only thing that could change is what type of beans they will cook for the day. In regards to taste, everything was just decent. The chicken comes out fresh, fried well and hot, but it will not bring you to flavor town. The batter is lightly seasoned. Don't worry, Texas Pete hot sauce, as well as pickled peppers, are right in the center of the table, and it helps the food go down just fine. Overall, this is worth doing at least once in your life. This is a 3.5-star dining experience rounded to 4 stars because the staff is nice and attentive. The servers are always friendly here and they dress in period attire. It adds a layer of cuteness to the experience. We've been coming here for years! At least 18 years. We drive 80 miles one way to get here. So that alone should tell you something. The food is exquisite and plenty of it. Don't be shy. Once you finish your regular dishes ask for more of anything you want. It's all you can eat. The sides change up a little from time to time. On occasion I have had green beans and Lima beans. One of the best museum experiences I have ever had. So many artifacts and interesting information. You could spend hours in the museum alone, but the outside tour is not to miss. A wonderful reenactment of a small town and how they operated back then. Although I have not tried the restaurant, I hear from all over, the food is really good. read more

The experience and museum are a must have. The great thing about the food is it is all you can eat, except for the peach cobbler dessert. The food is good, but I wouldn't say it's the *best* fried chicken and sides I've ever had. We kept the salt handy for our sides. The museum is fun to tour. We were the only ones doing it at the time, so we really got to take our time and have fun. Even the restrooms outside in the museum portion were clean. The Pickett House was once well known for delicious food. Many people for miles around would drive there to eat. Alas, apparently that time has passed. Down home cooking for sure, comfort food like your southern grandmother would make. They were able to accommodate our Miata Club on a Saturday ride (19 cars, 25+ people) without any problem. Plenty of parking space in the back (grass lot) and a room with family style picnic tables for us all to hang out. Appreciated that we paid as we came in, rather than having to wait for a check at the end. FYI: they'll add a 15% gratuity to large parties, even if you're paying separate. Not knowing anything about this place, we stopped for lunch and was not impressed. Fried chicken was the only option, the small bowls of vegetables were nothing special. you get your own drink, silverware and when you are all done you take your dirty dishes to the dishwasher through a window. For a basic no frills lunch you will spend $20 per person. The waitress was not very personable, I consider myself a fair tipper, I had no hesitation getting up walking out without leaving a tip as I literally did everything except bring out the food from the kitchen. I have not been to Pickett House in years. Today, hubs and I went. I couldn't order the All you Eat so I ordered a Thigh, fried of course, a side of Chicken and Dumplins and a biscuit. I was disappointed that the Buttermilk is not served anymore, I was really looking forward to it. Fried crust was very good, Dumplins, not at all tasty. The biscuit was bitter, but may have been the butter. Hubs had two pieces of chicken, ate it all, I just ate my crust, he had Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Chicken and Dumplins, plus my bowl, a biscuit and half of mine. That man can eat. I was disappointed I think due changes and my family is no longer a part my good times at the Pickett House. My Mom, Dad, Sister and Grandparents would all go to their. Good memories. It would a little different and not as busy. The owners have passed away and the Society runs it now. This place been here for years. Part of a local history museum facility, and as you dine here, there is the sense that the restaurant is a continuation of the museum, although I believe it is not. As you enter, the interior feels authentically from a time gone by, including the attire of the staff. At least at the time of our visit, There was one homestyle dinner of fried chicken (you pick light or dark meat), collard greens, mashed potatoes, dumplings, biscuits and peach cobbler. Although it is not fancy, or an epicurean delight, the food is quintessentially home made, is fresh and quite good as grandmas home cookin' goes. The food is DELICIOUS FREE Refill on every thing. It's worth it!! This place has so much history and character. And who can turn down an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet for a reasonable price? The meal is a family- style buffet which I personally enjoy! Mashed taters were creamy and seasoned just right , greens were pretty good but you have to add your own seasoning to them, chicken and dumplings were alittle watery for my liking but tasted delicious, black eyed peas were yummy and seasoned good, and the chicken, you absolutely have to put the hot sauce on the table on it, it's good without it but its AMAZING with it !! Rolls are really good too and then they bring y0u peach cobbler when your done and it was delicious as well!! Same concept of Republic chicken but waaay better and without the bragging owners. We went here as a couple on a Tuesday, arriving shortly after 11am. There were two other couples there, otherwise the place was empty. While we were there, they seated a large tour group in the party room. The staff behind the counter and our server were excellent and welcoming. The vintage circus poster decor was very interesting. However, the food, as a whole, left something to be desired. The fried chicken, was good, hot and fresh, but certainly not the best I had ever had. The sides were just ok, but lacked much flavor. The Lima beans were under-cooked and hard. The slaw was basically shredded cabbage without any flavor. The chicken and "dumplings" was basically chicken and noodles. The "fresh" rolls and cornbread were hard and dry. For the finish, we had high hopes for the homemade peach cobbler. One serving was just ok, and the other serving was terrible, sour and without any taste. One of my favorite places to go eat when back visiting my family in Texas. I've been going to this place many times over the years since i was a little kid (my last stop here was in Aug. 2008). It's a little bit out in the country (boonies); about a hour and a half from Orange (where my family in Texas lives), so when we go there it's pretty much a "majority of the day" trip. It's boarding house style; meaning, they keep bringing the food out as long as you want more! Not only is there a lot of food, but the food is actually VERY good!
