((4.5 stars)) Pickle Guys is a store dedicated to pickles, pickled vegetables, and pickled fruits. the interior is clean, brightly lit, and filled with barrels of pickles. the store is about selling pickled items, so no seats or anything. it's a fairly tight squeeze because the barrels of pickled eats take up the most space--standing room only. basically one of the workers, here, will guide you through the pickled stuff and put it into containers. pretty much everything is sold by the half pint, pint, quart, half gallon, and gallon. you can buy pickles by the container or by one for a $1 each. the quality of the food here is good. the sour pickles that i have tried here have been crisp, flavorful, and had a nice smooth briny garlic richness with each bite. there's a variety of different pickles, here, beyond full sour pickles. the sauerkraut is fresh and firm with a punch sour salty flavor. good stuff. service, here, is fairly quick and efficient. overall, if you are looking for pickled stuff, then Pickle Guys is a good place to start your adventures in briny food! they also ship pickles and more via their website if you're looking to gift something from here. read more

I pass by here all the time, but never bother since I'm not really into pickled things. A friend wanted to come by, so I followed and ended up being influenced. The minute you walk in, you'll get a huge whiff of vinegar. They have barrels of pickled items from garlic to herring to pineapples. Plus, loving all the pickle themed merchandise along the wall as well. They offer samples of everything, which is what sold me. I tried the Pickled Mangos and couldn't help but get a 1/2 Pint ($6.50) to take home. The way they pickle everything is so flavorful and refreshing. It's nothing like you can make at home. read more

What an amazing surprise.... When we went to the store, they were closed already. We did not know they close at 6pm! Was just checking inside from the window. And then! One of the guy came out to us and offered us a half pint of sliced cucumber pickle! Said, he liked what my friend was wearing! ( my friend was wearing all pink stand out clothes) my friend and I were really surprised for that happened! My friend was visiting from Japan - he owns popular restaurant in Shibuya, Tokyo. After PINING over this shop for literal months I finally made my way to it and was not disappointed in the least bit. As you walk in you're greeted by welcoming staff who are eager to help you taste test anything you'd like. I did just that and have to recommend tasting the pickled mango and any of their olive mixes. I brought my mom to NYC for a mother daughter day bonding trip, and my sister who lives in Brooklyn told me that we should check out "The Pickle Shop across from Meow Parlor". I was so perplexed that there was a store dedicated to pickles. When I saw her text I recalled seeing the sign for the pickle guys which I had originally brushed it off as reading the sign wrong in my peripheral vision, lo and behold, I do not need new glasses, it in fact was Pickle Guys, a pickle shop. Not gonna lie I was kind of confused walking in because I'd never seen anything like this establishment before. There were so many kinds of pickles and it was a little overwhelming. The employees were super kind, explaining to little old confused me that they have pickles of all sorts of shapes and sizes and ingredients, such as your regular cucumber pickles, radishes, then crazy shit like pickled mango (which, don't knock it til you try it, they were good). The owner was super cool as well and the pickle shop has a genuinely nice atmosphere, with plentiful laughter, many smiles and the option to try some free samples. Ordered for my birthday, took almost a month to be delivered which is fine but I Got a bunch of stuff Onions, horse radish pickles, mushrooms, peppers. The pickles were a huge disappointment I don't think they stand up to the hype it tasted like I was eating a regular cucumber... I got influenced online and had to buy from Pickle Guys.... Which is so dumb because I live in San Francisco and the price to ship these 3 containers to me was absolutely nuts and I am actually ashamed to admit how much I am willing to pay for some pickled things LOL. I got the hot peppers, sour pickles, and string beans. I wasn't a big fan of the hot peppers and didn't finish the container. The sour pickles were good but wow were they sour!!! Yummy but probably wouldn't pay to ship those cross country again. OH BOY THE STRING BEANS THOUGH - these things have changed my life lmao. I love string beans in general but pickled they are a game changer. They are SO crunchy and delicious I am actually drooling a little writing this review. I finished this container so quick. I did buy string beans from some local pickle companies and they were good but honestly no one seems to be able to nail the crunchiness the pickle guys ones have. We tasted so many things (pickled mango, pickled pineapple, pickled okra, pickled hot peppers) before we bought anything, and they were very cool about it. ("Try this. Try THIS!") Spending the afternoon exploring the Lower East Side of NYC, we had to stop by this staple establishment. My partner has been many times and has always raved about the pickled pineapple. The line was out the door when we arrived. It is an extremely small space so people stood in line so close to the many barrels filled with the varied pickled items. A chart on the wall lists all selections and prices. It was very cramped and crowded. Samples were given on request and someone insisted we tried the green beans, but they were not for us. We left with pickles, beets, diakon radish, and pineapple. My favorite was the diakon radish with carrot. The rest was meh, including the pickles. Quite expensive as well. It was great to get to visit the last standing pickle place on Essex, but I don't think we will be back. read more

This was a destination visit for me. This small, wonderful store, had every variety of pickled vegetable that you could think of. The staff were friendly, accommodating, and extremely efficient. Such an amazing place for a spontaneous treat in LES! There's barrels and barrels of everything you can think of, pickled. I was randomly here on a Saturday and walked in to a rush of people standing in line along the perimeter of the store. They have pricing above, towards the ceiling. I love that you can get half pints too for more variety. They give you samples - the pickled mango is so good! They're very courteous and efficient, and try to make sure they don't miss anyone on line. Really bustling atmosphere. When I lived in NYC I regularly went to the Pickle Guys at the corner of Grand & Essex Street. Alan Kaufman has owned & managed the shop since the 1980's. Weekly 2400 lbs of small cucumbers arrive here from and upstate NY cucumber broker in the summer and from in Florida over the winter months.The Pickle Guys is more than a hundred year old gourmet pickle store on the Lower East Side. Prior to refrigeration people pickled their fruits & vegetables to preserve them. In the 1800's there were 200 pickle shops here, now this is the last one left. The pickles & vegetables are stored in 40+ huge barrels and are vegetarian, vegan, gluten free & kosher. I would drive down on a Sunday morning because there was a lot of parking. I would enjoy sampling the vegetables, mushrooms, watermelon, mango slices, pineapple rings, & varieties of pickles watching the food tours and tourists stopping by for photographs and pickles. I loved their pickled garlic. In NY I used to buy gallon containers and use to substitute this garlic in all of my recipes. Then I found a recipe, purchased peeled garlic cloves at Cosco and made my own. Mine were good but they weren't as good as the Pickle Guys. Last week I ordered 4 quarts of pickles, veggies & garlic from the pickle guys. They arrived 2 days later by Fedex in wrapped plastic jars in a box that said refrigerate after opening. These pickles are such a treat! I spent over $75 on their website and got free shipping. Although I miss the shop and scene in the Lower East Side on a Sunday, this was a real treat! read more

I love all things acidic, pickled and as vinegary as they come. In fact, during a recent annual examination, I brought it up to my doc. I told him I'm not sure if I'm damaging my insides by consuming high amounts of acid. I seriously mean it when I say no meal is complete without a respectable amount of acid on my plate. He assured me I was fine and doing my gut a service by eliminating harmful bacteria, so....I visited the Pickle Guys! The shop smells of wonderful dill and happiness upon arrival. There was a small line that moved quite quickly. The workers were busy bees and got everyone out without issue and gave out samples upon request. There's lots of pickled themed decor and knick knacks for purchase. I was dying for pickled fruit, along with my favorite pickled red onion that I usually add to every single dish and was open to trying anything and everything. I zeroed in on the pickled Pineapple. Surely this must be delicious. I was also intrigued by their "sweet" sauerkraut. I took the trek into the LES alone so I couldn't buy much but I scored a quart of pineapple, red onion and a pint of the sweet kraut. EVERYTHING was mouth watering delicious and compliments my meals perfectly. The pineapples make a wonderful snack throughout the day, as well. Satisfies ALL of my taste buds. I couldn't put my finger on what makes the kraut sweet but for some reason I picked up on Sugar and grapefruit. I may be completely wrong but I was SO, SO glad I bought it. What a fun way to experience pickles - in the traditional way it was sold in the lower east side. My friend saw this place on IG and bookmarked it as a place for us to go on our trip to NYC. We are pickle fans and loved the fruit pickle (Mango - some pieces were more ripe than others) - they also had pineapple as an option, and the whole singular pickle you eat out of the bag - a spicy one and a regular sour. The spicy was SPICY which I liked as it delivered what you ask of it ... a hot pickle. Most of the staff expects you to know what you want, and I expected more careful service but felt it was a bit brutish, I didn't know if I could try or ask questions... but again I guess this is how things were back in the day. There was one man who realized we needed more help as it was our first time and asked us the right questions to get us what we needed. It's a smaller storefront with tubs and tubs of pickles, it's quite chaotic like a market. You walk in and out, you don't linger. I'm visiting family and stumbled upon this place which is totally up my alley as someone who loves pickled anything. It smells divine when you walk in and seeing them shred the horseradish was so cool! Someone greeted my friend and I very kindly, I believe it was the owner. I bought one of each pickle to try and was honestly not too impressed. I loved the size, freshness, and crunchiness but I thought they could've had slightly more flavor. I also just love my pickles super vinegary and I think these were more salt brined so makes sense. However, one worker made it an extremely uncomfortable experience. He seemed bothered that he actually had to help my friend and I. He came off very condescending. I was planning on trying more as I wanted to get a gift for my family I'm visiting but it was clear he was so over us. For reference, we had each only tried the garlic and a pickle at that point and were clearly going to make a purchase. We left without purchasing what we were planning because we genuinely wanted to just get out of there. He makes me want to give a 1 star review but I feel bad doing that considering how kind everybody else was. Pickles are delicious! I've seen their pickles around NYC and have been really excited to try their other pickled veggies and fruits. I thought the mango and okra were delicious! The pineapple wasn't more impressive than regular pineapples and was a bit overrated. The hot and sour pickles are A+. The prices are a bit high but I think fair for a specialty store with such variety ($6 for a 1/2 pint of mango, $5.5 for okra, and $8 for a quart of cucumber pickles). The service was friendly for the most part. It was pretty chaotic when I went (with people sort of yelling across the store), and wasn't immediately clear where you were supposed to order / pay / ask to try a pickle. They do make an effort to keep it hygienic by asking people to step away from the barrels when trying a pickle. I went here after school with 5 friends and my dad, me and my friends were deciding wht we wanted, so i told my dad to order wht he wanted first since it was the same bill. He asked a worker in a teal/greenish shirt (older) if he could taste a jalapeño olive, to which i added "oh actually can i try one too?, we're together" and the guy, instead of saying yes, goes "When i finish with him, i'll get to you" with a nice but judgmental attitude. To which i looked at my dad and friends confused, but brushed it off as nothing. My friends and I decided on the pickled mangos and pickles pineapples, so i told my dad, which the worker heard us and said, again, "When i finish with him, i'll get to you" which at that point i wasn't speaking with him, but directly at my dad. my dad told him "I hope you're not the owner, treating young kids like that." and the worker replied "no, i'm not the shirt has to be greener". we ignored him, paid, and then the other workers there informed us that he in fact was the owner or manager. The employees were nice and kind, but the manager or owner i guess doesn't like teenagers who ask for something simple in addition to their parents order. Can a stop at a pickle shop be a highlight of a weekend visit to NYC? Yes. For me and my friend, stopping at Pickle Guys when we were exploring the Lower East Side for a day a few weeks ago was an absolute must. Why? Well, we love pickles. But more than that, pickles are such an important part of LES history. There used to be numerous pickle vendors and stands in the LES - even on Essex Street when Pickle Guys stands now - and now Pickle Guys is the last pickle store on Essex Street. So visiting Pickle Guys isn't just about getting pickles (although more on that later because the pickles are AMAZING), it's also a nod to the history of the neighborhood and the city. And they make their pickles the old way, too (their pickles aren't made in a huge factory - they're barrel cured). So the pickles. I mean what can I say. If you love pickles, Pickle Guys is a dream. They have so many options! Do you prefer your pickles new, hot new, half sour, 3/4 sour, full sour, hot sour, horseradish...? My friend got a hot new pickle, while I went for a full sour. So different but both so good. Before I go on and on, I'm just going to say their pickles are amazing. But they also offer other pickles - tons of them. When you walk in, you'll just see I don't even know how many barrels! Pickled peppers (from hot to sweet, lots of choices), pickled tomatoes (several kinds), pickled fruits (apple, watermelon, pineapple, and mango), pickled vegetables (radish, baby corn, stringbeans, okra, garlic, mushrooms....and so many more) - they have it all. We got some pickled mango to enjoy in Bryant Park a little later in the day which was a great snack. (It's Kosher, too, FYI.) They offer several sizes (some people come in for full jars, others are just getting smaller containers of things to try)! The customer service is very New York - they're friendly but they'll also let you know that there's a line forming behind you so go ahead and order some pickles please. If you like pickles, Pickle Guys is a dream. I wanted everything. Is there anything like snacking on a full pickle while you explore/wander around NYC? I don't think so. And I will almost surely stop by here every time I'm in the LES for some pickles to enjoy on the go. Couldn't love Pickle Guys more.
