    Fish and chips

I still think for the price it's well worth it. The large is massive and the serving of chips is generous. This feels quite authentic to what I'd get across the pond. I love the option of both curry or mushy peas. The server was attentive, made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed and even offered extra tartar sauce. I'm a big cod fan - that's the way to go but haddock is also good.

I really liked it here! Got the smaller size cod, and it was still a pretty big portion - and soooo crunchy!!!!! Also loved the chips - soft and crispy all at once. You might leave smelling like oil, but it's worth it. Sitting there even convinced me I need to go back to London this summer LOL. I also am curious about the shrimp - next time!

Cod (softer fish) so good! Must order!

One of the best fried fish I've ever had for fish and chips! MUST ORDER COD!!! I really enjoyed the Cod which is more of the softer slider vs the haddock (firmer). I get sick of fried food easily so 4 oz is good for me. Tartar sauce is sooo good! It comes with the fish. You have to order the chips separately but nothing extraordinary. The individual fry size is a bit on the larger side and I prefer thin fries.

Cuisine: 2 Service: 6 Decor: 4 Value: 5 Overall: 3 I've been coming here for decades. Due to healthier eating, I probably only visit once a year at best nowadays. Over the weekend, I stopped by while in the neighborhood to grab a snack with my family. Walking into the dimly lit restaurant, you get hit in the face with fumes of oil infested air. I'm use to that, so didn't bother me much. However, what came next was a shocker. We ordered one piece of Fried Haddock ($16) and another piece of Fried Cod ($17). I don't know what happened, but it feels like they have completely forgotten how to fry fish. We started with the Haddock, and it was bland as can be. The batter and fish had no taste of salt. It was also not very crispy and flimsy when you pick it up. Is this the same quality of fried fish I have had for decades? I certainly do not believe so. Moving onto the Fried Cod, we found the same problems. The fish itself was more tender due to the difference in variety of fish, but a total lack of seasoning and a barely crispy batter made it only semi-edible. This is my usual order, so more than a little disappointed is how I would describe my feelings. What's up? I'm so lost. Btw, the tartar sauce was always watery and never been very good. Yet, they still charge extra for each additional one you request. Skip it and use the malt vinegar and salt. I never thought A Salt & Battery had the best fish & chips, but it was always decent. Compared to the amazing Fried Cod (Friday special) I had at Butcher Block just a few weeks ago for half the price, this was a major letdown. Read my review of Butcher Block if you care to see the difference. I hate to say that I will never be back again. It's like saying goodbye to a longtime girlfriend after one bad argument. However, she has a lot to prove the next time we meet. Till then, I'll need some space.

Not a bad spot! Was recommended by a buddy to come here for some fish & chips! It's a rather smaller spot with a few stools for order and dine-in. My UK buddy who came with us recommended we tried his favorite mushy peas and canned beans. Definitely interesting take. The fish and chips were decent, nothing extraordinarily special about it in my opinion. Pricewise was a bit more than I'd expected to pay, but nevertheless not too bad.

    Haddock, chips.

Used to be great, now not so much. The batter is dense, thick and chewy - the exact opposite of what you want a fish supper to be. Chips and coleslaw were nice, but that's not why you come here. Disappointing

    Haddock
    Brian S.

Great place. Been around forever. Haddock tastes like Cod but smaller chunks/flakes and slightly less mild. Sole is a flat fish, so small flakes, more condensed, meatier and more fish flavor. Even then, they were both very similar. Not sure what whiting would taste like. Very nice staff. Ginger glasses dude. The fish looked and tasted great. Price isn't bad. Their tartar sauce is good.

    Great customer service

went on good friday and it was not surprisingly packed! got haddock and chips and a side of curry sauce. quick service and hit the spot. curry sauce was insanely good, just like a chippy in ireland. satisfied!!!

Nice surprise as I was driving on Greenwich toward 8th. Had the haddock and chips, small, nice portion. Super fresh, super tasty with vinegar & very tasty sauce.

Been there at least three times this summer. Soggy fish. Limp chips. I prefer Gordon Ramsey's but it's closedown.

Ask the Community - A Salt & Battery

Is there still a shop next door where one can get British products?

Yes there's a small shop where you can buy Brits products and next door to that is the Tea and Sympathy restaurant serving British food.

Is the fish and chips beer battered?

We do not use beer batter! And in regards to the below response, the temperature of the oil removes any existing alcohol from beer batter. And we do not have minors working. Hope this helps!

    Can you make a reservation?

I couldn't find an answer for this. Anyone know?

    When do you serve scones?

They make them every morning and they are really good.

    When was this restaurant established?

Hello. We opened A Salt & Battery in October 1999, having worked for almost a year to get the batter and potatoes just right.

Is this a cafe style restaurant, or sit down with a waiter/waitress?

You order at the counter and there is limited seating.

Does the fried fish have any dairy (milk or butter) in it?

    No

Luckily, I had Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips on my list and it was on my way. I'd also been wanting to check off eating at a Gordon Ramsay restaurant on my foodie bucket list for sometime. This spot is going to count for me, at least until I can eat at one of his real-deal restaurants. While I didn't expect the place to not have a line, I was pleasantly surprised at how I was able to quickly place my order then grab a counter seat along the window. I was solo on this visit, so I didn't need a table, but those who had groups had to wait a few minutes to grab an empty one as the the restaurant was fairly full. The atmosphere is just like any pop-in, to-go place: casual, yet energetic, and feels approachable with a focus on serving quality food, rather than worried about a Michelin star. The only caveat is that the prices are a bit higher than most are probably happy paying, but you've got to remember its proximity to Times Square and the Gordon Ramsay brand. I got Gordon's combo which was a piece of cod, a piece of chicken, and three pieces of shrimp. All three were were crispy, flaky, and golden brown with a light batter that delivered a nice crunch, and the chips were hot and hearty. Exactly what you would you'd hope for from a restaurant built around this delicious British comfort food, especially with Gordon Ramsay's name on it. I'm not much for tartar sauce, so I can't speak to that, but I definitely appreciated the bit of lemon to add a bright burst of freshness. As it is more of a to-go/fast food style place, the presentation was surprisingly appealing for a quick-service restaurant. Paired with a ginger ale, it was a satisfying meal after a day of exploring the city.

Every dish was beautifully plated, fresh, and packed with flavor. The tuna tartare was bright and refreshing, the chopped salad was colorful and full of texture, the beignet was perfectly , the fish entrée was moist with a rich, buttery sauce, the burger was juicy with excellent fries, and the chocolate layer cake was the perfect finish. Even the cocktail was balanced, refreshing, and beautifully presented. Unfortunately, the service didn't quite match the quality of the cuisine. Our waitress seemed to be in a hurry from the moment she approached the table. When we asked questions about the menu, she frequently had to look down at her notes and wasn't able to confidently explain the dishes or make recommendations. Rather than creating a welcoming dining experience, she mainly functioned as an order taker. In contrast, the bussers and food runners were exceptional. They were attentive throughout the meal, constantly refilling our water glasses, clearing plates promptly, and checking in at the right moments. Their friendliness and professionalism made a noticeable difference. I also noticed two gentlemen, including an Asian gentleman, walking through the dining room, interacting with the staff and checking in with them throughout the service. If they were managers or supervisors, I would have appreciated seeing a bit more engagement with guests--simply stopping by tables to ask how everything was going would have elevated the overall hospitality and helped identify opportunities to improve the service experience. Overall Ratings: * Food: * Presentation: * Busser/Food Runner Team: * Wait Service: * Management Presence: * Overall Experience: The kitchen is clearly the highlight at Legasea, and the support staff deserves recognition for their excellent work. With stronger server training, better menu knowledge, and more visible guest engagement from management, this restaurant has the potential to deliver an exceptional dining experience from start to finish.
