So we decided to stop in here again. It had been five years since our last visit. I am super glad I stopped in. I had the opportunity to visit with Mrs. Pickles and she was just a sweet gem. Although we got there at 11:30 and they had already sold out of all of their full pies and pot pies. They did have a good selection of some sliced pies left. So we ordered a couple slices of blueberry and thyme pie. Wow! What an outstanding pie great texture outstanding taste. It was simply amazing. Mrs. Pickles was very friendly and took time to explain the ordering process how we can call in orders and things like that. I am so glad we came in here and gave it another shot. If you are driving by this little place that looks like out of a storybook stop in you'll be glad you did there. Remember to lineup an hour before they open to get your best selection. Also, while you're there, walk around and look at the amazing job, they did outside the restaurant of planting some sustainable food. They did a wonderful job with their espalier apple tree they started along one side of the building. In addition, it looks like they have a fabulous looking raised bed garden that they've got started. Also, is your walking in? They've done an amazing job setting up sustainable plants and a spectacular looking irrigation system. This time we will be calling in and placing some orders beforehand. I sincerely apologize because I cannot for the life of me remember which pies we bought, but they were so delicious that we ate them all in one sitting. I believe we got two pies that were two different berry mixes among other things. My husband wolfed both down because he ate one and loved it so much that he had to eat the other one. Mind you, my husband has grown up eating pies his whole life. His grandma used to make them from scratch all the time when she was still alive. So pies are a very sentimental and favorite food of his. I got the chicken pot pie, absolutely delicious. I'm obsessed with chicken pot pies and this one super hit the spot. Hubs is so very sad that we don't live close to the Pickles at all. We just happened to be in Big Bear on vacation and decided to stop by to grab some pies to take home. Simply the best pies I've ever eaten. This kitschy little place has some norms/rules, not unlike a friendly version of the soup episode of Seinfeld. It's highly suggested to call to reserve your pie(s), which gives you until noon. Leave a message and Pickles or Mr. Pickles will call you back. The doors open at 10:30 to a line, a long line on weekends. They've made so many pies and when they're gone, they close. It's that simple. Now to the pies, the amazing pies. I don't like pie crust, but I love Pickles crust. I don't like fruit pies, but I love Pickles fruit pies, especially with berries. While you wait your turn, review the chalk board for the still available pies or slices. If you're a first timer, buy a different slice for everyone in your party and share, share, share. Now the best part. If you've lasted this long in this review, check if there are chicken pot pies still available. If so buy an extra, because you'll want another one the day after you eat the first. Omg! Finally tried this place up the street from my house. We got there by 10:15a (15min before opening) and were able to get our picks of slices. Pretty good for Easter weekend. Be prepared to wait and don't expect to come in and out. One day we showed up right when they opened and there was a line and 2 of the berry pies were sold out! We did try the mixed berry, which was more on the tarty side. Our favorites were salted honey pot custard, pickle's key lime, dutch apple, and chocolate cookie crumble cream! While in town with my wife for a vacation we stopped by what appeared to be a popular pie shop. We're from San Diego and we love a good fruit pie, especially from Julian. We got Dutch Apple and Blueberry Apple Peach. The edge of the pie crust had (in my opinion) this strudel-like consistency which I loved and the fruits were very good (not too sour and not too ripe). These guys sell out their pies. At least 20 or 30 people--all of whom stood in line for an hour or so--were turned away BY NOON on the day of our visit because they had not ordered ahead. So use that device in your hand for what it was born to do: call a day ahead or be prepared to be very disappointed. Also: whether you called ahead or not, you must stand in the crazy long line that extends into the parking lot. Walk-ins and those who ordered ahead all stand in the same line. That's the way it goes, folks. We tried the caramel pumpkin pie and it was spiced perfectly and not too sweet. The crust looked hard and boring but it was delectable. This was a very, very good pie. ARRIVE EARLY if you want pie! I stopped by the shop at noon on a Saturday, only 1.5 hours after Pickles opened at 10:30am, and there were only 2 pieces of pie left! Luckily the couple in front of me only ordered one, so I was able to get the last piece of the day. Bourbon Pear would not have been my top choice, but it was amazing! The bourbon flavor shined through without being overbearing, and the pears were the perfect compliment. This may be my go-to flavor now! I would highly recommend going here! I came at open and got the Dutch apple, farmers basket, and the Cherry apple Pie. I really enjoyed all of the pie, the flavors were great and it was nice knowing that everything was fresh. The store is a bit small and the line can be a bit longer as they only have 2 workers at the store, but I must say it is worth it. Parking can be a bit tough to find and I saw people park in all sorts of ways but it is definitely doable. I think a lot of people do pre-order but I did not research how. I think they do have a facebook page where you can see their pies for the next day, which is how I know right away what I wanted. They do sell out quite quickly so if you get there, they might not have all the pies that you want. The store's ambiance itself was quite nice too. My gosh the pies here are on another level. We got 4 slices of pies: dutch apple, mixed berry, old fashioned pecan, pistachio macadamia pecan and 2 chicken pot pies. The mixed berry was my favorite with blue berries that held their texture and a jam that was perfectly gooey. Surprisingly they weren't too sweet or heavy, easily devoured a slice. The crust was scrumptiously savory. As for the pot pies, 90 minute cook time in the oven but the vegetables were a perfect texture. Would get both again. Service was friendly, interior was cute and quaint. We came on Wednesday 15 minutes before opening and there was only 1 person there (though they did take the last of two pies, bummer! That's how limited some of the options are as we were maybe 10 groups back. The savory pies are frozen and probably one of the best chicken pot pies I've had. We tried the honey custard, dark velvet, and pistachio pies by slice -- all were fantastic but the dark velvet was a knockout!! I would get a whole pie order of that. I'd heard about Pickles on previous visits to Big Bear but hadn't ever been able to stop by until today. We got there about 90 minutes after opening and they had just a few slices of two dessert pies left and the frozen chicken pot pies. We're staying in a place with an oven so we bought both for dinner tonight. The baking directions were easy to follow. You can see in the photos that the pot pie was enough for two people. It baked in the 90 minutes recommended. After waiting 10 minutes after baking, the pie was split into two dinner plates. This was a nice size for us. Hungrier people might want to add a salad. It tasted great! The bottom was loaded by layer, with carrots and peas and some onions and potato chunks, a layer of cooked chicken, and a lot of savory gravy before being topped with more crust. I liked the thick crust on the edges for sopping up more gravy. My husband loved it too. We're having the dessert pie later this evening. The line starts before it's opened! I couldn't believe it until I got there and the line was so so long already. It took maybe an hour plus so try to get there early! They were crossing items off the menu as we were waiting too and everyone gasped once it's gone which is kind of funny and sad at the same time. Anyways, they have seasonal flavors like pumpkin caramel pie (very delicious) and they have classics such as the chicken pot pie (the best). The meat pies do come frozen so be prepared for that but they give very clear instructions on how to prepare and serve. The fruit pies are amazing and my mouth is drooling thinking about it. It's fresh and not too sweet with the golden buttery crust that makes it perfect. You must get the large whipped cream that everyone is talking about (no regrets). You also have to buy in bulk for fear it will be gone so it can get very pricey but you do get your money's worth for the highest quality pies. Did I mention how adorable the store looks? This place has some of the best pies I have ever eaten. Everything on their menu is good, and that means that they absolutely sell out. I have been lucky enough to try this place twice, the first time we showed up later and they only had one slice left, and the second time we showed up about 15 minutes prior to opening and stood in line and had everything to choose from. You can preorder by calling them, but I haven't done so. It's a small takeout only place, so come with the expectation that you'll be waiting in line, and some patience. They were all delicious, and the gentleman that helped us was friendly, and welcoming. The whole pies were small, but weigh 1lb, and come frozen. That was fine because we were driving back to SD. Every time we're in the area, we have to stop in and get some pie. There is limited parking spots in the lot and the exterior of the building is cute and whimsical. It's hard to miss. There is no indoor seating and it's pick up only. You can call and pre-order but you'd still have to wait in line to pay and pick up your order. We've been here a handful of times already. Last year in October, we arrived literally 5 minutes after they opened and by the time I got to the front of the line 20 minutes later, they were almost sold out of everything. I ended up with a whole Dutch apple pie and a slice of caramel pumpkin pie. The Dutch apple pie was soooo good. We were here yesterday and this time we arrived 20 minutes before they opened at 10:30am. There was already a line forming outside. I got a whole Mixed Berry Pie ($38) and two chicken pie pies ($18/each). The thing about the pies here is that you can taste all the ingredients from the buttery crust to fresh fruit. This was our first time trying their pot pies. They are frozen and you have to cook them yourself. Unfortunately mine didn't come with baking instructions but glad someone posted it on Yelp. Set oven to 375 and cook for 90 minutes (sometimes longer depending on your oven). I rotated the pot pies halfway through and at the end needed and extra 5 minutes to get up to internal temp. The chicken pot pie was good with great crust and we also got the holiday beef which was amazing. We arrived at 10:12am and indeed there was a line! Honestly the line is what attracted us. We were heading out from Big Bear when we came across Pickles and the line starting, so I told my hubby to turn around and indeed he did. To be safe we ordered the traditional apple pie.
