I've been coming here on and off for about 7 years now. I lucked out and bought their Black Friday special - $120 for 12 classes. You book your class via the MindBody app - very easy process. The classes are always different even if it's a different instructor. I like that it's split up between 30 minutes reformer and 30 minutes Cadillac. The instructor always ask if you have any injuries prior to the class so that they can make changes to any exercise you might have difficulty doing. They have 2 changing rooms. They also have lockers (no locks/keys) where you can place your belongings - even though you can't put a lock on it, you can see the lockers from where you are. They also have a shoe rack. I've taken at least 5 classes at Pilates on the Square so I have a pretty good feel for it. Prior to coming here I had only done mat Pilates so this was a pretty different experience. Half the class in conducted on the Cadillac and the other half is done on the Reformer. At first it is a little confusing but after a few classes you get the hang of it. Overall the classes are pretty good. Of course some instructors and better than others. They are a lot of instructors so you will find a few that you like. I started with a Groupon but have since purchased more classes. They regularly have really good specials that make the classes affordable. You book the classes on MindBody which makes it really convenient. They do not have a locker room but there are two bathrooms in which you can change and there is space and cubbies in the studio to put your belongings. The classes do full up so I would advise trying to book a few days to a week ahead. read more

I always book a pilates class whenever I visit New York and I absolutely love this place! The elevator was confusing when I first came but you just have to push the door open from inside the elevator. I don't sweat a lotttt but it is a good workout. I was really enjoying coming here for the last couple months in order to facilitate pain management for my sciatica and neuropathy. However, they switched the class package price last Monday by over a hundred dollars. This is a huge leap without informing customers, and now I have completely altered my work schedule and regimen for a studio I can barely afford. The quality of the instruction is extremely mixed; some teachers don't project their voice or check posture even when a student states their injury. Classes are also wildly all over the map in terms of strain, difficulty, and advanced status. However since I have some basic form from ballet study years ago I felt it was a safe and affordable option (emphasis on the latter) to get the stability benefits my body really needs from machine practice. As I went to more classes I realized the instructors rarely make use of the Cadillac or the jump pad on the Reformer, which is sad. And I mostly ignored the constant Italian restaurant promotions including, once, a giant bowl of pasta salad that I was encouraged by an instructor to eat (I don't feel this would be appropriate in an exercise environment for people with eating issues!), and now, a TV screen that shows a montage of food images including penne alla vodka in full sight of anyone doing crunches on the Reformer. I'm not kidding! Overall I would have kept coming here for years but it seems like it wants to pivot to a place that services people who can afford rent around Union Square. Oh well. read more

The class I took here was so horrid that I was compelled to create this yelp page to share my thoughts. The instructor had zero idea what she was doing. Her cues were confusing (send your legs out, place your arms straight..WHERE? WHAT ANGLE?!) and she was impatient when the class did not get it right straight away. At no point were the clients asked their experience in Pilates, the machines, or their injuries. She never counted the repetitions, so we consistently did twice/3x more reps on the first side than the other (almost like she got bored and wanted to move on by the time we got to the second side). She kept telling us to protect our backs but gave no cues as to how to do so (stability, keeping a neutral spine...NOTHING). I would share the name of the instructor but she did not introduce herself. The apex of my horror occurred when the owner/boss repeatedly interrupted the class to correct the exercises the instructor was making us do. I appreciate his passion for correct form but on the other hand, it made me want to bolt before the incompetent instructor told me to anything else that could potentially injure me. He literally stood there and gave my instructor a lesson on what to teach us. This should be done before the instructors are released to teach!! The studio is large and airy with high ceilings and a gorgeous view of Union Square. There are rolling racks to hang coats and square cubbies for sneakers. A small curtain area is provided for changing. I cannot attest to a bathroom being present as I ran for my life after class. Currently there is still construction being done around the studio hallway area (elevator receiving area). I hope these serious issues are quickly corrected but I would NEVER EVER revisit. There is no where in the city you can do pilates on a machine for these prices. 30 mins on the reformer or the Cadillac then you switch to the other machine. I did physically therapy with a PT dr for 2 years. I have 8 things wrong with my spine. These instructors ask and they help me get a great workout even if others are doing things that I am unable to do. I can do a lot. I have come a Long way thanks to these instructors. What is cool about these instructors is that I like to take one persons class then another ones Class. It is never the same. It does not get boring. There are new people (students) all the time. You start. They will help you. You will make mistakes. No big deal. You will not get hurt. If I do not come several times a week I can not move. I swear by pilates. My core is the strongest but has ever been my entire life. And I did it with all my injuries. Pilates Rock ... and I am able to fit their classes in with my crazy flight schedules. I took the Pilates Machine Class on a Saturday afternoon. The studio is just off Union Square and has a great view of the park. Watching people milling around the Union Square Greenmarket was a great distraction my shaking muscles as we worked through various exercises! The class was separated into two 30-minute halves and is limited to seven participants. We started on the Cadillac and then moved to the Reformer, moving through core and leg workouts at we went. The instructor was quick to give us positive and constructive feedback. I really enjoyed the class. I'm surprised by the number of negative reviews, but it sounds like each instructor has their own style and they can vary greatly. read more

I usually come here after work so I can barely see anything. The bathroom is super small and there is only one changing room (more like a corner of a section) with just a curtain. I recommend changing before arrival. I did find it annoying that I can hear the other instructor more than my actual instructor. There should be some kind of divider. It is really distracting. During one of my visit, the receptionist kept talking to someone who was not part of the class (another employee?) the whole entire time. It sound personal which is pretty unprofessional since customer can hear your conversation. But I was too busy really trying hard to hear what my instructor was telling. At that point, I was actually glad to move to the cadillac section so I don't need to hear anymore. This place is pricey. I could never pay retail for this. Better off doing class pass and try other classes. Despite all these cons, I'd still come back. I come here mainly for the workout, not to look for a shower or get an apple. I haven't visited this studio since 2019, however I'm coming back to leave a review because I miss coming here. I moved from NYC to LA and the studios in LA just don't compare to Pilates on the Square. From my first reformer session to my 100th, the instructors always made me feel welcomed, provided feedback or let me "relax" depending on how I was feeling that day. Pilates became my "zen" time away from my Wall Street work schedule. By adding pilates to my regular routine I was able to drop the 30 lbs I gained in college and fit back into my high school jeans for the first time in years. I wouldn't have been able to do that without this studio's positive atmosphere. read more

Went to this studio twice through classpass. While the first experience was fine (nothing spectacular) the second experience was absolutely absurd. During the reformer session I was incredibly uncomfortable during one exercise. It was not properly explained and no direction was given on the correct movement or muscles that should be targeted. I quietly chuckled as my legs were awkwardly at a 90 degree angle and I was seemingly working out nothing when the instructor decided to stop the entire class to call me out. His tone was incredibly defensive and rude and the rest of the class he continued to call me out and ask what my problem was. To make matters worse, as I was getting ready to leave he came over to apologize for "not explaining things properly". At this point, I admitted my uncomfortable laughter came across wrong and that I was sorry, but that his lack of professionalism and his tone towards me the rest of class was flat out rude. He told me it was all in my imagination, at which point, I got up to leave. He then followed my friend and I down the hallway and down the steps towards the street continuing to push the subject. Me walking away to leave the studio was a clear attempt to disengage from this instructor, and his inability to let it go and let me leave was one of the most unprofessional encounters I have ever had. read more

I just left a "Pilates" class with an aching lower back. Why? Your "instructor" didn't even look at our form, lost count of reps repeatedly, and taught something that WAS NOT EVEN PILATES. Extend your hands... where? Raise your hands... where? Straighten your arms... at what angle? You have signs all over your studio about training there to become an instructor, which is clearly where you make your money. I shudder to think that this place actually thinks they can train others to teach without inflicting injury. I won't be returning, ever, and if you value your health I wouldn't either. I had a really uneven experience here. First the good: The space is SO conveniently located The staff was lovely Giant windows look out onto Union Square--so pretty! And the not-so-good: There wasn't nearly enough clear instruction, especially for a newbie class on the Cadillac. The bathrooms were teeny tiny. Hardly enough space to turn around. I was afraid my hanging winter coat would fall in the toilet. The only changing area was a curtained off area that stuck into the room. Had to literally walk THROUGH a class to exit. The instructors here are NOT properly trained, and there is no structure or workout involved in their classes. You will not feel like you did anything upon leaving the studio except waste your time. I've been to "Pilates on the Square," as this place is known as on ClassPass, time and time again over the past year. Since the studio is in Union Square, it's super convenient to get to, which is what keeps me coming back, but saving that extra five minutes of travel time is not worth it for this studio. As good as a Pilates studio is, each class is tailored based on the instructor, which is why I've about 4 different instructors. One girl was decent in terms of her instructions and knowledge of which muscles should be working during each exercise. The others were very amateur, if that. The majority of my classes I spent worried about straining muscles. "I don't know if this feels good to you guys, but it feels amazing to me," isn't something I really wanna hear from my instructor. There are also posters around the studio advertising classes to become a Pilates Instructor in a matter of weeks, which makes me worry even more about the level of expertise of the instructors here. read more

I frequently attend Pilates machine classes at Sal Anthony's Movement Salon and was thrilled to hear about the opening of a new studio. However, Pilates Union Square comes no where near Sal Anthony's. For starters, this studio is a member of Class Pass meaning most classes are fully booked, difficult to get into and full of beginners. I have nothing against beginners, but in order to get the most out of a Pilates class you really need to know proper alignment, breathing and how to use the machines. Many fellow classmates were unsure what "tabletop" meant. Aside from Anthony and J.R., the instructors are not well educated. One instructor nearly refused to let me increase my reformer resistance to the level I'm used to, telling me that green is the heaviest spring (it's the lightest). If you are a Class Pass member looking for cheap Pilates, a beginner or someone who doesn't need a challenge, this studio is great. If you want a quality Pilates class experience, go to Movement Salon or elsewhere. read more

I've taken a few really great classes here. The instructors will challenge you, and I like that the moves they use are different from a typical pilates class, so you really have to work extra hard. The equipment is clean and in good shape, everything is well organized, and each station has its own spray bottle and towel to clean up. The studio itself is no-frills, and it can be hard to hear at times when the waiting area gets crowded or a class at the other side of the room is going on. I found this studio on Classpass when I was visiting New York and I liked it so much that I came back the next day! I took classes with Angeline and she was a great instructor. I was even late the first day and they were nice enough to still let me into class. I liked the format of the class (first half on the cadillac, second half on the reformer) because it was challenging and I felt like I got a lot from the workout. I'm a little confused by the previous reviews. Not saying they are incorrect but just vastly different from my experience. Perhaps it's because I have previous reformer experience or maybe I just get lucky, but My instructors have been extremely knowledgable- more than MANY other Pilates studios. I have tight hip flexors and both instructors I had were dancers as well and understood the issue and how to modify movements. They don't always say angles because sometimes it's based on the individual and - my core activation point my be different than yours. But we were told repeatedly to pull up- tighten core, roll down etx. Not just up down in and out. And there were numerous hand in adjustments. I wish they had a proper changing room vs just a curtained area in the middle of the room. Or at least move it to the back where you don't feel so exposed and have people walking around.. Be said of this I usually reserve this class when I don't have to go anywhere afterwards and I come already changed. But you don't get sweaty or anything so a basic changing room would suffice. read more

I was nervous about attending this studio, because I am a beginner, and many of the other reviewers noted poor instruction from the trainers. I must've had beginner's luck, because I wound up in one of Anthony, Sr.'s classes, and all of the reviewers agree that he is the best. Here's my take: -The Studio- The studio is really conveniently located right off of Union Square. It has high ceilings, and big, gorgeous windows that look out onto the square. However, it did not have lockers (just cubbies and rolling racks) and no showers and/or changing areas. There are bathrooms in the hallway of the building, but those are shared with other businesses (a lot of us were waiting about 15 mins from one of the tailors to finish taking a very large and smelly poo before we could change). Another thing for which I wasn't prepared: two classes go on simultaneously. While one set of students is on the reformers, the others are on the cadillac. While it's nice that class will be divided between the two types of machines, it's a little weird (and a lot less intimate than other studios) to hear two different trainers giving instructions at the same time. -The class- I have nothing but positive things to say about Anthony, Sr.'s instruction. He really knows what he is talking about and is a pilates purist. He really focused on getting us to engage our cores, stretch in opposition, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed his instruction and would definitely go back just for him. This class is basically like physical therapy which is great for me. I have had a range of instructors who sip a latte while teaching half engaged to ones who will do the workout with you and correct your form. They have great specials on packages and everyone is always so friendly. About a month ago they had a restaurant bring by free food that was vegetarian friendly, yay! If you are looking for a great location and machines this place is for you. Just try and remember which instructors you like because some are definitely better than others. read more

I went in to try on a class and immediately felt brand new. I stretched areas of my body that i didn't know could be stretched. I take classes with Melanie. Her patience and care throughout the entire time is admirable. She makes sure you are getting the most out of the class. I highly recommend. During class, repair men were coming in and out of the room and talking. The studio is cluttered and run down. The receptionist is in the same room as the class and the phone rings and the studio door buzzes throughout. Impossible to focus and get centered. The instructor had us do mat work on the cadillac nearly the whole time; why I am paying for a machine class? Ive done pilates for years and half of what we did just seemed like stretching. This was my first time trying pilates on the machines as opposed to on a mat, and it was overall an ok experience. Josephine was a good instructor, and I got a good workout. The studio itself is ok for a no-frills studio -- good location, natural light, benches to wait and cubbies and a coat rack. What they REALLY need to do is: 1) Repair/replace some of the machines, especially the reformers. There were cracks in the vinyl upholstery that were haphazardly duct taped and would dig into my arms and elbows. 2) Have more helpful/welcoming people at the front desk who can at least check people in and explain how the (somewhat chaotic) place works to newcomers (i.e., where to start out, and that there will be two classes going on at once). read more

Overpriced for the amenities offered, it's one large room with the front desk and waiting area in the front(no music for class but a few phone calls), one curtain functions as the dressing space, a giant scammy looking (lighted!)board listing prices and a small painting of a nude white woman(which theologically should have inspired and challenged me but in this case feels inappropriate and confusing). The class was barely sweat producing, the teacher had very low energy(some music might help?), little to none hands-on work. The vibe was more "here are our equipments" than "let's get in shape", didn't feel much heart was put into the space and work here. read more

I tried Pilates Union Square (Pilates on the Square on ClassPass) for an evening machine class. At the north end of Union Square, the studio space is wide open and has a beautiful view of the park. The studio is a little loud, as a single room, with multiple classes going on it is a bit hard to concentrate and get in the zone. I found this to be especially true as my reformer was right by the door, there was a lot of noise from the front desk area and the buzzer for the door going off, the instructor could be very hard to hear. This was my first time doing a Pilates class with Reformers or Cadillacs and I was a little nervous. When I came in I mentioned it was my first time using machines, I was a bit disappointed they didn't give me an orientation of the machine or discuss any of the basics with me. A lot of the class was just me frantically looking over to my seemingly accomplished pilate-er neighbor next to me and trying to copy her movement. I think that this is a good class to take in conjunction with a cardio class. This was the only workout class I took that day and I left feeling very little burn. read more

Overall, I really like this place! I am new to Pilates and bought a 30 class pack during one of their promotions. They have great sales a few times a year where you can buy discounted classes, but if you don't buy during that time period, classes are expensive. I found the difficulty level of classes very varied depending on the instructor (but because I am new to Pilates, didn't know if it just felt "easy" because I wasn't doing it right, or if it just really was easy). Once I found the correct instructor/difficulty level, I loved this place. Xiomara's Intense class is AMAZING. It is a great workout, and you can feel your body becoming toned during it. As far as the other classes go, I mostly found them to be relaxing and not very strenuous. read more

I've been attending classes for two months now, on a weekly basis, sometimes twice a week. Just when I started to get familiar with certain instructors' teaching style, the facility rotated an entire new group of instructors. It's truly a loss when management doesn't recognize the valuable team members and lets them go. Some clients are even willing to follow the ex instructors to their new locations. I'd hate to point out names. One of the new instructor during the first week of April was clearly just coaching on stretching technics and basic at home vid ab works. The machines were barely put to use. In addition, I was stuck into this class due to an instructor change, which I wasn't even aware/notified of until I arrived. Previously with the knowledgeable instructors I was willing to overlook the small bathroom. It is a fitted box hole with precise room for only a sink, and toilet. Please do not attempt to change in there. There is a separate corner space in the studio with a curtain as a changing area. There are no lockers available, just cubbies and a coat rack; although all the guests are respectful of others' personal items. At this rate, I'm not sure if I'm paying the $$$ price point for the convenient union sq location or Pilates machine expertise anymore. read more

I love coming here at the weekends when it's more convenient for me to travel downtown. Really enjoy the classes, the format and the layout of the studio. My favorite so far has been the Extreme Pilates where you get to hang upside down and be a little daring. The owner comes in sometimes and seems like a fun character that's seen it all. Four stars as it can be a little hit and miss with the instruction sometimes and the floor could do with a proper sweep. read more

Carrie is the best instructor for runners! I'm a regular runner and have been looking for some great cross training that goes beyond yoga and is more interesting than just another gym circuit. Found Carrie at Pilates Union Sq and their sister studio "Sal Anthony's Movement Studio" and I'm so glad I did. Carrie has completed a number of marathons / half marathons herself, so know's exactly how to achieve maximum benefit for core training and achieve the stretching benefits of Pilates. The studio is so great - clean, great Pilates machines and always busy enough to feel like you are part of something without being crowded. Definitely expect to make my "cross training" destination. The routine is usually 1/2 time split between the Cadillacs and the Reformers so you get the benefit of both. Carrie takes the time to talk to each person at the beginning of the class to understand what they want to work on and if there are any injuries. Throughout the class she is paying attention to safety and making sure each person is achieving the benefit of the exercise. I've been to multiple classes with her and each one is different and extremely effective. They move quickly - at the end of the hour, I'm "it's over already?" and it feels less like exercise and more like a continuous flow of stretching and movement - while being incredibly effective. In my latest class I entered with a tight and hurting hamstring from too much running and left feeling 100% better. My running times have improved since coming to her and my core looks so much better. My next step is to book Carrie for a private lesson so I can get the full hour focused on just what I want - perhaps as preparation for my next race. Highly recommend both Pilates Union Sq and especially Carrie. read more

I have been coming to this studio for a few months because they offer so many classes. There are some pros: big, bright space, it's clean and a friendly front desk staff. All the instructors I've had have also been quite nice. All very positive and encouraging. The issue I have with the classes are they don't make use of the machines. Tricep dips (since when is that part of Pilates?) and leg lifts are something I can do at home - I don't need to pay to use a Reformer or Cadillac to perform these moves. Half the time is spent on the Cadillac and it's mostly spent laying on it and doing leg work that can be done on a mat because they don't use the springs or straps, etc. None of the apparatus on the machine is used. What's the point of even being on it? Many of the moves on the reformers also don't make use of the machine. I've been practicing Pilates for many years and it's always been about aspiring to flexibility, proper form and lengthening. Making small controlled movements aided by the machines to help with form. After taking about 15 classes here I've never gotten that here. You pay extra to get to use these machines in your workout and they don't even really utilize them - It's just a lot of laying on them and doing typical mat-style work. This place has no soul... and its by far the worst place I have taken Pilates in. First of all the classes are every hour non stop ! When I do Pilates I want to be in a relaxed atmosphere, this is not true for this place. They have 2 different classes going on at the same time (there is no wall in between) so you can hear the other class while you are taking yours also the most annoying thing is hearing the bell ringing of ppl coming up and ppl looking at the class while they wait for the top of the hour! Horrible experience. Came to this studio through classpass. The instructor couldn't articulate the words to tell the class to get into the position he wanted and had to show us and was not viewable to anyone in the class except for the person next to him. When I was having trouble with the position and fell out of it he came over to ask what the problem was. I explained I was having trouble with it and it was hurting my neck. He became extremely defensive and told me he didn't want me in the class. Then announced it to the rest of the class that he was kicking me out because I questioned him. Guy had a total ego problem. The receptionist was just as horrified as I was and offered a free private with another teacher. I accepted. Then 30 minutes later I receive an email reneging on the private as it was against studio policy. This was not my first rodeo. I have been doing pilates for 5+ years. I know how to use the equipment. Based on the 5 minutes I had in class, the teacher has no clue what he is doing. Recommend to anyone to avoid this studio. read more
