Horrible experience. Came to this studio through classpass. The instructor couldn't articulate the words to tell the class to get into the position he wanted and had to show us and was not viewable to anyone in the class except for the person next to him. When I was having trouble with the position and fell out of it he came over to ask what the problem was. I explained I was having trouble with it and it was hurting my neck. He became extremely defensive and told me he didn't want me in the class. Then announced it to the rest of the class that he was kicking me out because I questioned him. Guy had a total ego problem. The receptionist was just as horrified as I was and offered a free private with another teacher. I accepted. Then 30 minutes later I receive an email reneging on the private as it was against studio policy. This was not my first rodeo. I have been doing pilates for 5+ years. I know how to use the equipment. Based on the 5 minutes I had in class, the teacher has no clue what he is doing. Recommend to anyone to avoid this studio. read more

The teacher I had was not trained in Pilates. A pilates cadillac is not for doing "30 pushups" or "20 tricep dips". A magic circle is not a thighmaster. Not once was proper alignment broached. With 5+ years of pilates reformer, tower and cadillac practice under my belt this "studio" was a joke at best. read more

About a week ago I took a Pilates class. I really appreciated the teacher who did not talk too much and gave my body time to experience the movement and the stretching. She did not rush and provided a calm presence and reassuring tone of voice, and the session was well-paced. I had some chest congestion. As soon as she noted the congestion she re-focused the exercises to address what I needed. Thank you Pilates on the Square! read more

I got a Yelp acc just to leave a review for this place (usually hate Yelp..) but only because I'm a fan of one teacher at the studio. If you want a tough workout with a really well trained teacher, go to Stephanie. She's one of the BEST Pilates teachers I've ever had. Really knows how to build the class and cater to different bodies and different injuries. I took my first class with her after having not done Pilates in a while and she was super nice but still kicked my ass. Really great at giving cues -- she can really demonstrate what a move/exercise looks like so you can tell she's been doing it for a while. The dislike: she can be really funny and really strict at the same time. I liked her style but my friend thought she was too strict. We both agreed though that we walked away feeling so energized!!! But the next day we were both SOOO sore haha. Also, my friend was a beginner to Pilates but I took her to the adv class (I know my fault) but unlike some instructors who get upset she was really patient and good at making it work for everyone. She also talked to my friend after and gave her an exercise for her hips. So about the studio: They're owned by the same people at Movement Salon so I've taken classes at both places. The other studio has more experienced teachers I think even though I've only been there once. The staff are really nice, no problems there. Why this is not 5 stars: I think the teachers are inconsistent, quality wise. Like the other reviewers here, I've taken a bunch of classes and I find the other teachers at Union Sq so so. Some of the younger teachers don't really know what to do with injuries and aren't very experienced. To me, they're a bit inconsistent and don't even demonstrate the moves properly.. I'd go to Erin or Hanna(?). I've only taken their classes once but really liked them -- both are very knowledgeable and patient. Haven't done the gyro but the classes here are so small you do get a lot of attention. Amenties wise: This studio in particular is beautiful and super convenient. It's really clean and well maintained; there's even tea! I love the tall ceilings, you feel so peaceful working out (provided the teacher is clear and actually trying to give you a good workout vs making you to do silly exercises). I would recommend trying a bunch of teachers though to find out who you like; in my experience (and I've been doing Pilates for a while), Pilates is something you really need to find a good teacher for because the best teachers can actually (and want to!) help you improve your body vs just giving you a workout. read more

Reading the reviews had me a little daunted - ClassPass doesn't have a very comprehensive rating system, so the only time I saw the Yelp rating for this place was when I was strolling to the dingy little elevator that takes you up to this boutique pilates studio on the second floor. That said, the entrance leading up to the studio is NOT indicative of how pretty it really is! It's open, breezy and there's an abundance of bright natural light flooding in from the tall bay windows that line the perimeter of this studio. The cadillac machines are positioned right next to the windows, allowing you a beautiful view of Union Square. My instructor Yunny was sweet, approachable and had a self-deprecative humor that's charming yet relatable! As someone practically married to her work and pretty out of shape, I found her workouts appropriately challenging. She was attentive to what our individual strengths and weaknesses were and tailored the class accordingly, especially making sure to correct our form and posture whenever she noticed something was amiss. I felt at ease, yet motivated at the same time. Definitely one of my favourite pilates experiences from the numerous I've had the chance to try with ClassPass so far! read more

This studio is in a convenient location and the space is nice, so I decided to ignore the Yelp reviews and check it out. Big mistake! This was honestly the worst pilates class I have ever taken. Yunny Biserette, the instructor, was unable to find the words to describe the movements ("um, put this leg there and, like, crunch?") and could not demonstrate anything, as she was wearing jeans. She was also unable to answer basic questions about the exercises and did not correct form. At one point, she admitted to a man in our class (a pilates first-timer), that she had never taught a male student before. Imagine going to a spa for a massage and then being poked in the back with a wooden spoon for an hour. That's what doing pilates is like at this studio. I agree with the other Yelp reviewers-- do yourself a favor and stay away. read more

Came to the group class via class pass. If you are experienced on the reformer or Cadillac this will definitely leave you a bit disappointed. That said, the instructors are pleasant (although my very precise personal instructor would be horrified). It's a nice relaxing recovery day sort of work out. The classes and instructors are amazing! They focus not only on form but on breath and your body as a whole. Allan and Angeline are great!

The ambience is relaxing- high ceilings, spacious, simple decor, wooden floor panels, window views of Union Square across the street, clean, not smelly. No need to bring a lock, items are kept in cubby holes within view/watch of the receptionists' area. Do recommend. I have been faithfully attending the other location and this based on the availability of instructors that I like on a weekly basis for the past 2 months and I remain satisfied with the client service and quality of techniques/ challlenges. read more

I took a class here using ClassPass. My instructor was Angeline. This being my first Pilates machine class, I thought she did a pretty good job. The exercises and movements were explained well and she was very friendly and inviting. As a first timer, Angeline made me feel comfortable. The location is convenient and I enjoyed myself, so I will be back. Based on the other reviews I've read, perhaps I'll stick with Angeline as not to be disappointed. read more

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Gyrotonics classes I took and the one Pilates class I had on their two different machines. The studio is clean and warm with large windows on the back wall with a wonderful view of union square. Their bathrooms are closet-sized but they are well stocked and clean. A bonus is there is never with a line since the class sizes are nice, small, and therefore intimate. I've taken many Pilates classes around the city and even had one where all the reformers were shoved up against the wall and the students were organized on mats instead. The teachers I have had are great and tell me details of alignment I haven't heard before. Although sometimes I prefer a more difficult workout, I can definitely feel it in areas the next day. After having some back issues I started to look for something low impact that would still be a grest workout. I stumbled upon this place randomly as I strolled along union square and happened to see their sign for the October challenge. I decided to try out an introductory class and absolutely loved it. The instructor Josephine was awesome. She was patient in asking about any injuries and took her time to explain the workout for us newbies and beginners. She has great energy which makes the class even more enjoyable. I really enjoyed the class and loved how the exercises worked out different parts of the body. You will definitely leave here feeling like you got a good workout in. read more

I have no idea why some of these reviews are so harsh. I've done a few classes at Pilates on the Square and recently signed up for the October challenge - 16 classes for 160. You can't really beat their prices! This is definitely a no frills studio, its clean and to the point. It is not intimidating like some of the other studios I frequent can be, which I find very refreshing. I think this a great place for both newbies and more seasoned pilates goers. I have been looking for a good, solid studio to attend regularly and I definitely found it here. This is the kind of place where teacher matters, I recommend trying out a few and figuring out who is most your style. Angeline is a great teacher - hard but nice and calming. The other teachers I've taken have been great too but Angeline is definitely my favorite. I am interested to see how/if my body changes from regular visits. I'll report back! read more

I've been going here for 5 months..yes, there are things that could be improved--the boxes are taped up, etc, and it could be cleaner but I love the classes..It does not bother me there are two classes going on at once. Better that than not being to able to get in. Teachers I love-- Debbie, Yunni, Melody. All very knowledgeable. My sciatica is all but gone now, and I've gotten much stronger. Big fan. read more

This is one of my favorite options on ClassPass. I love how the classes are split up into 30 mins of reformer and 30 mins of cadillac. The exercises are super diverse, hard to get bored, the teachers I've had have been super sweet/kind. And there sometimes is a super cute puppy at the studio. I will say the space is more casual, less boutiquey, but I don't mind it. Super clean and lots of sunlight. read more

I came to this Pilates studio after having signed up thru Classpass. I had Stephanie L as my instructor and I thought she was great. I practice Pilates a lot, and sometimes going to a new studio is frustrating because you leave without feeling challenged. Stephanie did a great job at not only keeping everyone's form in check, but also encouraging a positive energy and periodically giving background tidbits on the practice of Pilates. The first half hour of this class okay but then the cadillac was a nightmare. The instructor was the owner and he kept asking us to do things that were for more advanced students. A few of us were scared straight and didn't want to do some of the exercises. He didn't give us any modifications and expected us to do these ridiculous moves. The studio is a bit dingy compared to other places I've been to on Class Pass. The instructors in most pilates studios tend to be polished and well spoken. That was not the case here. read more

I had to write a review after reading some that were here on Yelp. I have enjoyed every class I have taken here and have been practicing pilates for over 7 years. Each teacher has their own style which can be confusing or frustrating at first, but I would say to try different instructors. An example of that was when I signed up for one teacher who I love and agree with his instruction, but found out that my teacher was someone else when I went to class. This teacher had a more modern approach and used the apparatus in different ways than I have done in the past. While I was anticipating my normal work out, I got something that was a more athletic approach. I understand it can be tough for people who are new to pilates but if you speak with the teacher before about any concerns or injuries, they always seem to help. read more

I was so excited to take this pilates class through classpass. The instructor was completely tuned out, and had us doing the same move for over 10 minutes, which was not hard. I do not recommend this unless you are sure your instructor is tuned in and ready to make you work. Ugh. Waste of an hour! read more

I took Pilates on the Square with my class pass!! The studio is in a good location and they have up to date equipment. The main reason I loved the class so much is because of my instructor (Nicole). You must take Nicole Byrnes's class. I went on Sunday night and loved her teaching style. She gives everyone in the class equal attention and isn't afraid to correct you if you are not in correct form. Overall great class, highly recommend it. read more

The instructors are not properly trained. Most pilates instructors go through many, many hours of training with a thorough understanding of the muscles used like quadratus lumborum or psoas major/minor. They are unable to name the muscles used. The terminology they use: core, hips, butt. They hire anyone and teach them basic moves. As some of the reviews mentioned, whatever you are doing, it's not pilates. Instructors give empty instruction and compliments. If you are not self aware with your body's limitations, you might leave with an aching back or hurt yourself. They remain in business because of their location, but if you want to do real pilates, go elsewhere. read more

I really like this studio. Ive taken class with quite a few instructors and never been disappointed. I like how you get to use 2 different machines. There are usually 2 classes taking place at the same time but it doesn't bother me. The only drawback is there are no locker rooms to change in so either come dressed or you'll have to use a little changing area with a curtain. read more

The customer service at this location is beyond bad. The front desk associate Leticia was rude, disrespectful, and spent the whole time rolling her eyes. They overbooked the class and instead of working with me to reschedule for a different day they said it was not their problem. I do not recommend them at all. read more

I really like this place. It's in a great location and it's a beautiful studio. You just have to know which instructors to take. A lot of them don't teach real Pilates, it's true. But, there are a few who really know do know how to teach Pilates. Try to take class with Erin or Ellen. They're really good and they teach real Pilates. read more
