First time here. Instantly fell in love with the place because of all the pride gear that was on display. Supporting LGBT pride will win with me anytime. But the service and the drinks were delicious as well. They actually had a menu dedicated to pride. I tried the Blue Balls first and it was delicious. I also tried the Grindr. Yes it came with a condom attached. Lol. We laughed hard about that and then collected quite a few lol. We an amazing couple at the bar. This was my second time coming. The first time I ordered a basic vodka water, so didn't experience their signature cocktails. The atmosphere of this place is really cool and I love the melted wax on the walls from the candles. I'm not sure if it's because it's been rainy the past few days, but it smelt like mildew this time. I ordered the Tullahoma, which is one of their bitter drinks. I don't recommend it. My friend ordered The Manny Martinez and couldn't even drink it. Somehow that drink ended up on my tab, I guess because we all shared it until it was gone. The bartenders are friendly and fast, but the drinks are just not good. If I come back, I'll remember to order something not on their menu. read more

Great new edition to the BHAM bar scene. Honestly, I had never heard of the place until I overheard some people talking about it. The place is very intimate and unique. I loved the option of a tequila shot and beer deal (bottom of menu)... first time I've seen a deal like that. This would be a great place for a drink when meeting a date or a couple of friends. It's not big enough to bring a huge crew. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be back! read more

I have been to pilcrow many many times now and I have to say it has gotten better and better. Many improvements have been made over the last few months. I think it is a great addition to the Birmingham bar scene. Known as a tequila speakeasy, it is tucked away in what appears to be a basement. Super dim red lighting, exposed brick walls, very different from anything else in Birmingham. Their cocktail menu is packed full of boozy tequila cocktails, but my favorite is the Blanco tequila, with a modelo for $8. You really can't beat that. They also have a great happy hour, drinks like a sazerac for $6, or beers a few dollars off. This is a great date night place, loud enough to not feel awkward but quiet enough you can still hear the other person talk. Grab a seat at the bar, and enjoy some tequila. Let's hope tequila makes her clothes fall off. HA! read more

Went when they were first opening. It's a small cavelike feeling. If u are claustrophobic this is not the place for u. Had one of their specialty tequila drinks on the cocktail menu. Did not like it at all. Several other people we met there had the same reaction to their drinks. With all the choices for great bars around town this is down near the bottom of my list. read more

A recent new addition to the downtown bar scene. Pilcrow is a speakeasy, the second in the metro area after The Marble Ring. The location is actually really cool. The interior is decked out with a modern neon light design which reminds me of a more minimal Little Trouble (located in Atlanta). The inside is a little narrow and seating is one long sofa on the left side of the bar with multiple round tables lining it. Obviously they're new and I've been to enough bars to be a little underwhelmed. There's definitely a lot of little kinks that still needs to be worked out, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. The bartenders here definitely aren't quite there yet in terms of drinks making skills to me. There's definitely a lot of room for improvement. read more

This place has always been crowded whenever we would try to come here, but this visit we actually got a chance to come in. I loved the seating area. Me being not so much of a drinker I had a hard time deciding on a drink. I ended up getting the Ampersand Collins. Very tasty, but I didn't really like the coconut milk. Pilcrow is almost perfect! Bham needed a tequila bar and now we've finally got one. The interior decor is great and very unique, I love that the tiered walls is part of the original architecture of the building and i'm sure you'll be seeing photos of the Pilcrow entrance sign all over Instagram. We didn't have any issue's with the service, you just have to keep in mind that cocktails are made from scratch so it won't always be the quickest, that's to be expected at every cocktail bar though. It's right next to the Essential on Morris Ave. Highly recommend the Interrobang (‽) punch if you like refreshing, fruity drinks that taste more like a tea than a sugary drink. We visited this business only days after they opened, and I expected there to be a little chaos (just from previous experiences of new bars/lounges). But I will say this, everything ran completely smooth! We went about 6pm on a Saturday. Yes most of the seating was full but the room was still so spacious. The bartenders were super nice and they made amazing drinks! They seemed like more of mixologists than bartenders. I say that because I was sitting close to the bar and noticed a certain art and creativity each bartender used when making a beverage. The atmosphere and decor was also very nice and make the experience very intimate. I will be back very very soon. Morris Ave was the perfect place for an establishment such as this one! read more

Finally made it to Pilcrow after walking by many times and seeing the line out the door. It makes me so happy to see Birmingham getting more and more places that draw people to form a line! First of all, the interior is quite small. As it appears there is only one public exit / entrance, it doesn't hold that many people. We went on a Friday evening, probably closer to 7pm or so so it was definitely still early and not that crowded. The vibe is definitely cave chic, with cool lighting and one long sofa along the main wall, with a few small tables and chairs in front of it. I have to say this may be a tricky place to go with more than four people and be able to converse comfortably, but don't let that stop you! It specializes in tequila drinks, and both of our selections were great. On the higher end of the price spectrum for a cocktail, but nothing that was out of the ordinary for a bar of that caliber or location. I think they will continually be changing up the menu as well, so I can't wait to go back and see what they do next. read more

Pretty new spot. Think they're still working out the kinks. It's very small so, when we got there at 8pm on a Friday night, it was already one in/one out. Luckily we didn't wait very long. Very cool concept and I love the decor. A friend and I ordered the punch. It took about 30 min to get our drinks. We had to go ask and check on them. Having both gotten the same drink we were surprised to see they were different colors and very different tastes. Hers was sweet/pink like we expected. Mine was very bitter and brown. I showed the bartenders and they offered to make 2 new ones. My fault for not taking them up on it. Instead they added "more sweet" to my drink but it didn't really do anything. Luckily the drink was strong so, by the time I was half way through it, I didn't mind the taste so much! I'll definitely give them another try in a few months once they've had some more time to get things together. read more

I almost don't want to tell you how cool this place is because I want to keep it all to myself. A bit challenging to get to which only adds the the awesome-ness. Once you find it, this speakeasy style bar is a great place to hang out with friends and enjoy unique libations. Each drink has an interesting description and somehow fulfills every word. You'll just have to order one to understand what I mean. We went on a week night which was ideal because I imagine it is less enjoyable when it is crowded. The space is long and narrow and I have heard on weekends they usually reach capacity and have to turn people away. Get there early on those nights if you want to get in and don't mind a crowd, or come out on a different night and enjoy the chill atmosphere and drinks and actually be able to carry on a conversation with your party. read more

My wife and I finally got around to frequenting the Pilcrow. We are pleased to report we had a great time. Down stairs underground the bar has done a fantastic job of making the space welcoming & cool with a slight edge. The bar was busy but not over the top which was perfect. The bar specializes in tequila based cocktails which is fine by me. I loved that they had a shot and beer deal which was the perfect way to start the night. The bartenders are fun. It's a touch cooler than all bars since it's in the basement of a building, but not cool enough to wear a jacket. The cocktails are delicious, and the top shelf and bottom liquor selection is superb. They don't cut corners and try to make sure the customers are happy. Really chill/ low key place reminiscent of an underground NY or San Fran bar. The drinks were good & crafty, my favorite was the tequila and squirt Paloma. The seating is arranged like a lounge/ nightclub which is good for large groups. The music did get a little loud every once in a while but overall it was a great atmosphere. Visited Pilcrow for the first time while participating in a pedal tour. I was overcharged for the drinks I purchased. Pay attention to the tab and get a receipt. I was charged extra after paying and after reaching out via the phone number listed, I never received a call back. I had to go through my bank to dispute the claim. Will not visit again, and certainly will not recommend to others when bartenders are padding the tab for extra tips.] *Update*- Amazingly, I received a call back today immediately after posting a review and was offered a backhand apology of error. I was accused of stating they were stealing when it was a simple error. I could accept that if the calls I made were returned in a timely fashion, but to call back only after a review was made almost a month later, shows the lack of concern for the patron in this manner. I stand behind my previous statement and I am appreciative of my bank for taking care of the matter. * Final Update* After reading the added comment below today, it is clear the text message I received from Joe was another lie. I visited three businesses this night with no problem and I closed my tab. Instead of staying it was a mistake, he proceeds to continue to fault me for this as if I was the customer and bartender. Had I been the business owner, I would have returned the call either way, not to mention, he initially stated he didn't get a message from me. Angry? Not at all, like I told him to marginalize the error of amount is tactless and poor business practices. His rudeness both on the phone and in his initial text tell me everything I need to know. Cool place, literally as it is in a basement, and clearly a late night spot. The vibe is very European. Spartan in design on purpose to allow ample standing room. Deep purple lighting adds to a nightclub atmosphere. We went at happy hour on a Friday so the place was nearly empty. Hubby had the Witches Kiss, an interesting concoction and quite tasty, but packs a punch! I had a delicious rose; crisp, light and cold. Great addition to the 1st Ave N scene.
