This unassuming storefront place is really outstanding. The food is carefully prepared for each individual order and it is absolutely delicious. There is a big menu of food options, plenty of seating inside and some outdoor seating. Parking in its area on Santa Monica Boulevard is usually easy. The pulled pork taco with chili verde sauce is fantastic, with finely chopped onion and fresh cilantro and meat that is cooked to perfection. Out of this world -- highly recommend! read more

I give this 100%! I got their carne asade burrito. Since I was splitting with a friend, they were nice enough to cut it in half for us. As a result, I scarfed my half of the burrito in an instant. Rip-off. I paid $27 for a buche burrito and a lengua burrito + extra meat on both burritos. What I got was a burrito barely bigger than an Airpods case or a $3 burrito from Taco Bell. The food options are as eclectic as the shop. This tiny storefront seems to house piñatas, Justin Bieber CDs, Mexican envelopes and a very frightening dish called Tostilocos with tortilla chips, cucumber, jicama, pork skin, chamoy sauce, hot sauce, tamarind candy and Japanese peanuts.....YES THIS PLACE IS INTRUIGING! The food is meh along with the prices. The chicken in the crunchy shell taco lacked flavor but for a late night meal, I really wasn't expecting much. And as far as the pricing everything was a bit off. It was about $15 for a quesadilla con carne and 2 chicken crunchy tacos with sour cream. A normal size guacamole was $7.98 with tortilla chips which I found to be extremely overpriced and offensive. He makes it from scratch yes, but the amount isn't comparable to the size. Maybe it was the loud, drunken homeless guys out front, or the super high eyes of the guy who made our burritos that made this place way less impressive to me when DG and I came here for dinner last night. We got wet burritos to go - mine was lengua and cabeza with only avocado, onion and cilantro and DG's was chicken with rice and beans. I remember the meat being tastier the last time I was here, so I don't know if it was an off night or if the scene here turned my taste buds south. There's a magical dish that few people know about and even fewer establishments offer. I discovered it at a long-gone place called Lucy's, next to Tito's Tacos, a place now called Cinco de Mayo that I avoid. I've seen it at a few other places, and whenever I do, I order it. Invariably, it's good. It's called: The Chile Relleno Burrito- a chile relleno wrapped in a tortilla with rice and beans. It's just perfect. Pili's has it, and it's perhaps the best I've had. The difference is in the cheese, mostly- either you can have your oily melted globs or, as here, you can have firm and flavorful cheese your teeth actually sink into. The pepper makes a difference too - sometimes it has that smoldering, almost burnt taste that offsets the subtle richness of the cheese so perfectly. See, I'm drooling now. I've tried a number of other things on the menu, and they have been ok. It's the chile relleno burrito, though, that elevates the place in my mind (and my score). The place itself is kinda dive-y, with nothing that you could call decor. But it's ok - I take out, rush home, visions of that first bite in my mind. Oh, and try the tres leches dessert too: it's like a tiramisu, but with dairy on top of dairy on top of dairy. Yes, it's rich. Bonus for being open hella late - 2AM! read more

Oh God. This place had soooo much potential. But no, they had to go and fuck up any hope I had to having a good lunch. First off, before I even walk in, this place from the outside looks soo legit made, like straight up mexico style and the interior matches. Second, they not only had a HUGE menu, they also were selling random shit like gum, cereal, and mexican cds. haha...yeah, how awesome is that? Third, they have a big tile on the front counter with our lady of guadalupe. Everything was really loooking up. She even brought my food to me. How nice. Nope, that shit stops right when I take a look at my food. What I'm assuming is the asada, looks like meat that's been boiled or something. Greyish curry yellow color that looked nasty. But I still ate it. It was tender and moist, and the salsa was great, but the color...I couldn't get it outta my head. The pastor was ridiculous. I couldn't believe what I was eating. The pastor was sooo dry and crispy, like it's been sitting in an oven for way too long. It was like eating supermarket deli food an hour after the deli closes. I was seriously thinking about going up to her and asking her what the deal was with my food. Was it something I said? Does she not like Filipinos? What gives? It's really unbelievable that it's taken me this long to check out Pili's tacos. I've driven by so many times, each time thinking how sketchy the storefront looks (it has a screen door! what?), and each time deciding to keep on driving to another taco destination. I should've known better! I should've known that the shadier looking the taco shop, the better the food served within. There are about 5 or 6 little tables inside, a beverage cooler, a couple of waist high freezers containing frozen treats and your licuados/agua fresca options, candy vending machines...just tons of random stuff. It's awesome. The only drawback is that with all of this stuff, there's no room for a salsa bar! Sadface. All you have to do though is ask for some salsa and they'll bring you out some little cups full of spicy red salsa and a milder green salsa. The walls are covered with pictures of all the different menu items. You won't believe the variety of dishes they have on the menu. Some things I have never even tried before like Molotes (corn tortilla filled w/marinated potato with chorizo deep fried and topped with beans - wow, sounds like heaven!) and Entomatadas (described to me as 'sort of like enchiladas but with tomato instead of cheese). Check out the menu, it's seriously intense. The taco menu is even much more extensive than your run of the mill taqueria. Meat options include pescado, lengua, asada, carnitas, pollo, pastor, cabeza, buche, and barbacoa. Non-meat options include veggie and quesillo. It's not advertised but we were told that during the month of May, all tacos are $1 Mon-Fri from 4pm - 7pm. (regular menu price $1.50-$2.50) I wanted to try the barbacoa taco but unfortunately they were out of that meat for the day so I went for my standard asada and pollo tacos. As others have mentioned, the tacos ARE a little bit smaller than average so make sure you load up on a couple of them at a time. The meat was really tasty though and I was ecstatic to not come across any super fatty, grisly pieces. Can't wait to start working my way through the menu (gelatin or empanadas de lechesilla anyone?) and I've GOT to try the chile relleno burrito that I keep hearing people rave about. Definitely going to have to add this to the Cinco de Mayo taco eating contest-crawl and I'll have to bump the time up a little bit so we can get the $1 taco deal. read more

So yes, I possess the ability to communicate with French and Moroccan people, along with some Canadians and Africans, but for the most part it was a pointless venture. Driving home from the gym the other night, I saw Pili's sitting there looking empty and lonely on SM Blvd. Word. I'll give it a shot. Walk in, and it shares space with a Mexican market. Cool. They had Obleas. I f-ing LOVE obleas! I'll take one of those. There was a couple sitting at a table, and two ladies working the counter. I stood there and waited. And waited. And waited. For about 5 minutes before they took my order. I guess that they don't like gueros. Neither of the ladies spoke a single word of English. My Spanish is terrible. I was able to order my food, although we had a misunderstanding as to whether the food was for there or to go. I should have studied Spanish... would have been much more practical than French, needless to say. Especially when considering my fondness for South and Central American culinary delights. They have a ton of different plates, and a lot of different types of meats as well. I wanted a variety to sample the goods. Keep in mind, these are small tacos: -fish taco ($2.50) -- was very good. Not too much sauce, perfectly fried, good flavor, and a good meaty piece of fish. -tongue ($1.50) -- not very good, wouldn't get it again. -carne asada ($1.50) -- it was okay, but I've had better. The meat was somewhat flavorless, so I had to dress it up with salsa. -pork belly ($1.50) -- was very tasty, albeit a little dry. I would get this again. The salsas were pretty good. The rojo was nice, and not too smokey or tomato-y, and the verde was excellent, with a nice kick. All in all, I will go back and try some other things. I'll keep you updated. If it's not for the happy hour $1 tacos and the start of the Taco Crawl, I wouldn't have stepped into this mini-joint called Pili's Tacos. I deducted one star cause the tacos were so tiny that I could finish in 1-2 bites if there weren't any Yelpers around me (yes, my mouth is really that BIG *embarassed*), so I took them in 3 bites instead. We came here as the 1st stop for "failed" UYE Taco Crawl. Taste wise I really like it and they have plenty of selections to choose from which I luv. I ordered myself a Lengua and Al Pastor, my favorite. If we're gonna just eat there, I believe I can eat like 5 or 6 of those tacos, it's so freakin' tiny and the salsa ain't spicy enough. One yelper, Tyson, was surprised that they have Posole so he ordered that and funny thing was, instead of spicy, the sauce was full of broth and no spice, until the lady owner told him to pour the red salsa in. I NEVER imagined eating soup with pouring the red salsa, I thought the soup usually have their own spice in the broth, I guess I was wrong. Inside the store, they also have Mexican fruit Ice-creams that I've been searching for a long time, yumm, I'm so gonna come back for this on hot summer days. The service might not be excellent - I deducted another star for it, because Matthew K tacos almost didn't come out at all when others almost finished with theirs, but then she gave an extra tacos on the house to compensate. Parking always a bust on Santa Monica especially during traffic hour, but you could always try to find parking near the residential area behind the stores. NEVER ever comes in a group, it's so difficult to seat together, at the most probably group of 4 is best. Be sure to get a few of them, as they're a little small, but they taste great and they're cheap! I give this place two stars. It's nestled right on the corner of Burdock and Santa Monica in West LA near my job. The first time I ate here I had carne asada tacos on my lunch break and they were great. I went back the next week and ordered chicken enchiladas, which came with black beans and Spanish rice. Huge mistake. The black beans were basically like black bean juice, there were no legumes visible on my plate. The Spanish rice tasted like sink water, don't ask how that's the only way I can describe the taste. The enchiladas themselves were terrible. The chicken was like warm and rubbery and tasted old. I had to extend my lunch break to return the enchiladas and exchange them for chicken tacos. The tacos were just as terrible. I've come to the conclusion that the chicken here is just plain terrible. Whatever you do. DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING WITH CHICKEN HERE. It's disgusting. I won't be going back, unless I want something simple like chips and salsa. read more

If I could have given this place zero star's I would have. I ordered a carne asada burrito tonight; got it home; bit into it and was overwhelmed be an immense wave of disappointment that kept growing bigger with every bite I took. I concede that, at least in LA, one must specify they do not want rice and/or beans included in their burrito when they order. Admittedly I neglected to do so during my first, and only, trip to Pili's Tacos. However, if I had asked for no rice then I am left wondering what else they would have put in the burrito since there wasn't any carne asada in my carne asada burrito. To sum it up, I paid $6 for a rice burrito that was filling, kind of tasty but not worth the money and nothing at all near what I would consider a decent carne asada burrito. This month I've went twice to get the super burrito: one was beef - almost made me throw up halfway through... the second one was chicken and that's the one I just got done eating. I salute Pili's for their boldness. They set up shop across the street from La Salsa,one of Southern California's fresh mexican grill chains. La Salsa's motto is "keep life fresh, keep it exciting" I have no frickin idea what that means. These are good tacos for the westside. On the weekends they have an al pastor spit. It only cost a dollar, but lets just say it was only worth a dollar. Its a total hole in the wall, like 5 tables and rickety chairs you can pick up with a finger. Pictures are on the wall, but the actual menu is next to the register. Behind the register is a huge industrial juicer that would make Jack Lelanne jump down and do 20 pushups. Thankfully no one ordered a fresh carrot juice mix, because i would have winced at the memories of my mother revving up the juicer downstairs in the kitchen every sunday morning, forcing me to drink it after I groggily came down... but hey, if thats your thing, they got it, "good for you". Aside from the one taco I had, I saw pozole on the menu and was hugely compelled to order. The soup was a bit "home style", in a good way I suppose. Very brothy, but it came out unspicy. I asked about it and they said you gotta put the spice in yourself... oh.. ok. Once I did that, the flavor really came out. There were two big pieces of pork, unfortunately one was literally a hoof!
