All the Instagram glazers, LA staple they say, sick of seeing these hyped up spots for mexislop that I can get anywhere. Anyway I got the 2 taco plate with some beans and rice. The rice was a little on the dry side, decent Mexican rice flavor, pretty typical and overall not the best. The beans were also very mid, like if they were straight out of a can, no distinct flavors or hints of beauty. I have been craving these old school hard shell tacos for a while, they had a nice crunch to them, the beef was pretty good, added some juice to the bite. I work in East Los often, this is one of those places the locals always recommend. On a couple lunchtimes I ordered through DoorDash for pick up, quick easy and convenient. The building is an original piece of the City's history, boasting a menu that features their famous burritos that vary in size from a regular to a huge party size beast that can feed several. I tried the Hollenbeck and the Okie burritos on two separate occasions via pick up, as aforementioned, the service was quick, convenient and the pick up window is seamless, parking is located next to the structure and I haven't had problems getting there. Hollenbeck was good but I definitely enjoyed the Okie burrito more, I ordered the "original" size once and didn't seem to learn my lesson the second time, these burritos can feed two in Original size. They offer a "Mini" version which would be satisfactory for one person. My favorite thing about these burritos is how "home-made" they are, the salsas and meats are fresh and taste like they came out of an abuelitas kitchen. I recently went to El Tepeyac's and had dinner with a friend. We sat outside in the patio and enjoyed our meal. I had not been here for a while since I retired from the City of LA / DWP 10 years ago. I ordered the Hollenbeck and my friend had the Okie burrito. The portions were big as usual but I must say it was overly salted. I don't remember the food being this salty. I felt my blood pressure rising so I only ate half. I wish they would taste their own food and realize they should cut down on the salt. My friend felt the same thing. It must have been perfect timing because there was a line outside the whole time after we got our food. So the smells in the air told me that I wash about to eat something good. I got lucky; there was no line when I arrived. I went straight to the counter to take a seat. There are only 7 seats at the counter, and once you sit, you can't switch. I heard from a friend who grew up in the area that owner Manuel use to hand out shots of tequila to those waiting in line. I can't confirm this folklore, but it sounds like this place was quite the vibe back in the day. Although, Manny is no longer with us. His food and legacy lives on. You won't find a better deal especially in this economy. The staff was friendly and helpful! I asked for recommendations and, based on Cindy S.'s suggestion, ordered the Chile Verde Hollenbeck Burrito, which was excellent. This pork chile verde burrito features seared pork simmered in a tomato-based sauce. I ordered the regular size, which is a massive burrito. They offer two sizes, "mini" and "regular," and the $2-$3 price difference is worth it for the larger size, in my opinion. The Hollenbeck Burrito is huge - enough for 2-3 people! I made the mistake of eating the whole thing myself and regretted it. I don't recommend trying to do the same. Save some for later or share - you won't regret it! I was initially under the impression that Chile Verde was a green sauce, but since it's tomato-based, that explains why it's red. The burrito is massive - you won't find one bigger for the price! It's stuffed with rice, meat, and refried beans, topped with tender Pork Chile Verde. There's shredded lettuce, chopped tomato, and guacamole on the side. I just had to mention how great El Tepayac is again. You just want fine better traditional Mexican food anywhere else. It never disappoints. It is always fresh and hot. It is always great. The portions are huge. Yes, there is always a line, but you can get it to go or just over to the window and order and eat outside, they have lots of tables. Also the counter is often over looked and that is a great place to eat. The place is small but so nice. It looks like you belong there. The service is just amazing. This is one of my favorite places to frequent. The nostalgia from when I was a kid coming with my parents and the first time getting a Manuel's Special and freaking out on how huge it was. have been coming to this Boyle Heights institution, which we still call Manuel's, for over 40 years. Our parents brought us here practically every weekend for breakfast, when there was invariably a long but fast-moving line, and proprietor Manuel (Rojas) himself offering tequila shots at the door. Back then and maybe now, they only had menudo on the weekends. Back then and maybe now, lots of USC folks came here. Manuel has passed on, but his family still runs the place, and it hasn't changed its appearance at all, and the menu is pretty much the same too. Service is still quick and friendly. Ordering to-go at the window outside is equally quick. They now work with some delivery apps too. My go-to dishes then and now are the huevos rancheros, machaca burrito (not the Okie machaca), and the tacos and taquitos. The taste and size of the dishes have not changed. Their ranchero sauce is chunky with onions, peppers and cheese, their salsa moderately spicy. Their guacamole is loose because it has both lettuce and tomato.
