I didn't know Holbox existed until I had the lucky opportunity to see them win the Michelin star, which then put them on the radar for me. If you're like me and you have a list of restaurants, you want to try I pray they don't disappoint me. Holbox DELIVERED! My cousin said she loved the place and she is less picking of me so I was like OK. There is a baseline which means it's gotta be at least good. I'm not gonna lie. I eat a lot so I tend to be a bit more critical if I actually love the quality of a place. Everything here hit it was so fresh! Highlights for me included the scallop taco, the Uni by itself, the tuna ceviche. In truth, you really can't go wrong. The guy that was telling me what to order said that and I was shocked, but he's right anything you order will be amazing. I also love that there is the bar seating so you can watch them prep everything or you can always order and then bring it to any of the communal table areas. PS. We decided to show up about an hour early to checkout the place. It opened at 11:30 am and there was already a line at 10:30 am!!! All the counter seats were taken and we were 3rd in line. The staff was sitting around, chilling, eating and getting mentally ready for opening. By the time they opened the line was out the door and around the corner. They promptly opened and began taking orders. You order at the counter, pay, they give you a number, sit anywhere and they bring you the food and takeaway the empty plates. Our food came out in stages, which I liked, and fairly quickly. I especially liked the authenticity of the place. It's a food court with charm and character: Everything was fresh and tasty. AMAZING. So efficient, very clean, love being able to see them prep food at the bar area. Pulpo a la brasas - low key a must, octopus is so tender. Didn't care much for the rice/beans but not bad. Comes with blue corn tortillas, but honestly the octopus and almond sauce (think b*tchin' sauce) were delicious. Great cherry tomato pico de gallo. Scallop aguachile - wowwww the scallops were so fresh, literally bursting is my mouth. They were sweet, tender, and perfectly paired with the tangy lime sauce. Taco de pulpo - ok so this is pretty much an assembled pulpo à la brasas, BUT I will say the full meal was more tender because it was an entire grilled piece of grilled vs one tentacle. If with a group, def recommend getting the entree to split vs individual tacos. Smoked kanoachi tostado - delicioussssss the smoked kanoachi (amberjack) was the perfect glue for the ceviche. Another banger. I was at capacity at this point, but the only change I'd make is swapping the taco de pulpo for the ahi tostado. So really, Holbox did everything right, and was so good it's gaslighting me into how I could have ordered more strategically. This place continues to be one of my favorites. I took some family who were visiting from out of town today and they were so happy with the meal! We got our favorites... the live sea urchin and the ceviche de atun. The ceviche is a showstopper, everyone loved it. This time we got the whole sea bass entree (pescada à la brasa), two pulpo tacos, and the shrimp aguachile. I loved the shrimp aguachile, the fried prawn heads are so crispy and tasty. The sea bass entree was good and had a beautiful presentation, it was also nice for sharing, but the number of bones to pick out was a little annoying. That's what you get with ordering a full fish though! Not their fault. The pulpo tacos were tasty too, I love their handmade blue tortillas. But probably my least favorite of the bunch. I have been stalking this restaurant on Instagram for the past year. We finally had a chance to go on a Saturday afternoon and now my satisfaction has been satisfied. The place is like a food hall. It's loud, seats are limited, but the line does move quick. If there are no seats at the counter, you can always find a seat anywhere, but you better order enough because it is difficult to get back in line to order something else. The food is nothing short of amazing. The staff here worked very hard and you can tell they care about what they put out. They made a really good recommendations, I got the Kopache smoked yellowtail, which is my favorite dish so far, I also got the yellowtail ceviche, the scallops. I would probably pass on next time, although it was very fresh. It had a very distinct zesty taste a little strong on the lime. Also got the sea urchin, which is fresh and flavorful, and two orders of the churro because we had to take one home it was that good. I can't wait to come back and try their hot foods next time. Line was long when we pulled up on a Thursday for lunch. Parked in the small lot - but not a lot of parking available. We got lucky. Waited in the 20 minute line and ordered a whole lot of everything so we could try everything. Everything was delicious. The guacamole - really well seasoned - preferred the regular tortilla chips vs the really crunchy other thing it came with. It almost broke my tooth trying to bite through it. LOL. LOVED the mixto ceviche, the octopus taco and the uni & scallop ceviche.. Loved the entire market it sat in and will definitely be back to try more. I drove 35 minutes from South Bay, then waited in line for 40 minutes to sit at a table. The novelty of trying many seafood options, with chefs constantly curating new menus, is great. It's manageable to have a satisfying solo experience by ordering smaller items, though I regret not ordering a ceviche or entree. The wait made me want to try more variety. Consistently good and I'm appalled at myself for not writing a review until now. I would personally come on the weekdays during in between meal times for the shortest wait. There is a private lot but fills up, and there's also adjacent street parking. I love sitting at the bar and seeing the plate being prepared. Also love the open freezers so you can see the fresh seafood hanging. Another standout was the homemade hot sauces! Each had a distinct flavor from sweet, smokey, and hot so it was really fun to try. Finally got a chance to get to Holbox to checkout their seafood tacos. Luckily the line wasn't too long and the order process was fast and the delivery was fairly quick. I ordered the Octopus and scallops tacos which were tasty. The scallops were a little bit tiny but they were still good. My friend got the shrimp and fish tacos and she was happy and enjoyed her tacos. I originally thought it was the only business there but there were many other businesses on the premise. They have a tiny parking lot and you pay $2.29 per hour to park. You scan a QR code and you pay for parking there. After you place your food order, they give you a number and you go have a seat and someone delivers your food to you. Currently sitting after i just inhaled everything. But so so so so so incredibly good. The ceviche de atun (bluefin tuna) was my favorite item we had. The tostada was AMAZINGLY crunchy but maintained its integrity whenever you break/bite it (it dint just crackle off and break how it wants) The fish is so so so fresh and light and the flavors of everything mixed in is amazing. My next fave thing was the yellowtail because of the chili oil thing they put on top. It really tied everything together (and again the tostada kept its crunchiness and integrity throughout the entire meal). Holy flavor burst. Next is the Baja fish taco, which tops my #1 (taco nazo). The batter & tenderness of fist is what i look for the most in a fish taco and this place did not disappoint. The batter was not oily at all and extremely airy, but not EXTREMELY crunchy (but that's okay). The kanpachi taco was also really solid. The fish was cooked perfectly and i love all the toppings that it came with. My least favorite (don't get me wrong, it was still REALLY good) was the octopus taco which was solid. It was really good, im just not the biggest fan of octopus in general. Overall, i think everything on their menu is well versed and crafted to perfection flavor wise. The price is solid for a place w a Michelin star and i like how home-y it feels, being in a food court. I will most definitely be back (we waited 1 hour, but i would wait longer). En route from the San Francisco Bay area to Orange County, I stopped by Holbox around 3:30p on a weekday to find that parking is a challenge and there was a short line to order food, but I was expecting all that and was intent on eating here. Here's what I ordered: Octopus Taco Baja Fish Taco Scallop and Shrimp Ceviche Hamachi Collar Sopa de Mariscos (Seafood Soup) As I had expected, the food was presented well and the fish tasted fresh. Been wanting to come here for quite some time now. I was finally able to make it on a Wednesday during lunch. We got there around 11:15am (they open at 11:30am) and the parking lot was quite empty. We sat at the bar before they opened (we asked some workers and they said that that was fine) and once they opened our orders were taken. I recommend you snag a bar seat if there are any rather than waiting in line. Although, the line was really short when we arrived anyway. Food was amazing. Finally got to try and see what the hype is about!! First of all, that line is LONGGG!! Planning to come when they open means that you're already late and it's going to be about a 1 hour wait (on a Saturday at least). It's food court style so you order, get a number, and then find a place to sit. The food is super fresh though, and most things are good... but not everything was a hit for me. Scallop Aguachile ($17)-- Scallop is naturally sweet! Good amount of pieces! The salsa/marinade/Aguachile sauce (?) is just SUUUUPER sour. Wasn't expecting it to be that sour without any cuts of spice or salt. Very mixed reviews on if we'd get it again. Like the scallop itself is fresh and beautiful but not a fan of the sauce. The avocado rose is beautiful and generous. Shrimp Aguachile ($28)-- So little pieces, kind of mediocre, and so expensive?? The super sour marinade worked decent for scallop but not for the shrimp. Big miss. Erizo Sea Urchin ($28)-- AMAZINGGGG. One order comes with 2 halves. The uni is sweet, the scallop is sweet. It's marinated in a good mix of sour, salty, flavorful goodness Tostada de kanpachi + uni ($24)-- AMAZINGGG definitely would get again. The tostada is a good crunch, the kanpachi is flavored well and the uni is so sweet, so fresh. Ceviche Mixto ($23)-- Mix of shrimp, octopus and halibut. Ceviche is on the more sour side. Comes with a side of chips. It was good and would order again to share... but wasn't as "wow" as the tostada or Erizo. Filete al Carbon ($18)-- It's ok. I guess it's like a good hearty lunch if you just wanted to order just one thing... but I wouldn't say it's special enough to come all the way here and wait in this line for it. It's fish, cilantro rice, beans, avocado, tortillas. It tastes exactly like what you think it tastes like. Nothing super wow, but not bad either. Smoked kanpachi taco ($8)-- oh I LOVED this one and actually came in with 0 expectations since it's not one of the ones I've seen people rave about. It's cheesy, kind of spicy, all around savory. Definitely would get again. It's a nice contrast to the brightness of ceviche and Aguachile etc Scallop taco ($9)-- Good!! The scallop is good and fresh and sweet so anything it's put on has got to be good. The sauce is good, the onions work. All around it's good. Taco de pulpo en su tinta ($8)-- My god the biggest disappointment. Everyone raves about it but what the hell is that black sauce that's on it!! The octopus itself is spectacular but whatever the octopus is sitting on was just soooooo not it. It's weirdly sweet and mushy? Scraped it all off my taco and just ate the octopus and tomatoes. Next time I'd get the octopus as a side order and not this taco. Large guacamole ($14)-- Pretty good!! Loved the fried fish that came with it. Had a good textural crunch. So good, definitely worth all of the hype. Line was wrapped around the corner of the building and I didn't see it let up once but it does move pretty quickly. We were able to find an open table outside easily, and there is more seating inside the food hall. We ordered with our eyes and stomach and ended up with way too much food but glad I got to try a little of everything. Scallop aguachile was a standout- definitely order this. The scallops were plump and sweet and contrasted well with the sour acidic marinade. Another must-get is the kanpachi tostada. It had a mix of textures and was so flavorful. Ceviche mixto was good- big shareable portion and comes with tostadas. Would skip on the baja shrimp taco next time. Baja fish taco was also a bit forgettable. Soft shell crab was pretty good! I don't see that on the menu very often. A critique I have is that an order of guac should automatically just come with chips. The food was absolutely delicious and stunning, plating and taste did not disappoint, service was impeccable, and the price is unbeatable for a Michelin star restaurant. Finally came to enjoy the 10 course tasting menu this past month and I'm very glad that I did. It was a very cool experience, though admittedly I was pretty damn full by course 8. The conchas in the very beginning -- oysters and a blood clam -- were probably my favorite dish of the night, to be honest. I enjoyed pretty much everything, save for one dish that was made of kanpachi head pate. just a bit gritty and not my favorite flavor or texture. After so much time and so many people raving about it, we decided to give this spot another shot. It's definitely better than I remember and a good restaurant but didn't feel it was as impressive as people make it seem. They have a large parking lot and there's plenty of street parking. The line was relatively short when we arrived, but we still waited like 20 minutes to order and get seated. The service was great actually. The host was super friendly and helpful explaining the menu. It was sprinkling that day and they were offering umbrellas for those in line, which is very nice. They are dog friendly with outside seating. We ordered a lot of plates but the main ones were the ceviche and the grilled octopus. The ceviche was good but idk it was missing something to make it great. The octopus was super tender and the sauce was great, but the beans and rice were just ok. We didn't like the seafood soup because it tasted more like a tomato bisque with seafood in it. The fish taco was great! All the food was very fresh for sure. Wow... Holbox absolutely lived up to the hype. From the incredible salsas to the fresh handmade tortillas, every bite was packed with flavor. My favorite dish was the Kanpachi Collar, which came with rice, beans, fresh tortillas, pickled onions, and three generous pieces of perfectly cooked collar. Building each taco yourself made the experience even more fun, and the combination of the smoky fish, creamy beans, fluffy rice, tangy onions, and fresh tortillas was phenomenal. Another standout was the Scallop Aguachile. The portion of scallops was surprisingly generous, and the bright, tart sauce complemented the sweetness of the scallops perfectly. Easily one of the best aguachiles I've had. My fiancé ordered the seafood soup, and it was just as impressive. It was loaded with fish and shellfish, making it feel well worth the price. Yes, the line was long, but it was absolutely worth the wait. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, constantly clearing finished plates and checking in to see if we needed anything else. Even though Holbox is located inside a food hall, it somehow creates the feeling of dining at a standalone restaurant. The open kitchen, the smell of fresh seafood cooking, and the constant buzz of happy diners give the space an energetic yet welcoming atmosphere. It feels casual enough for a quick lunch but special enough for a memorable meal. I already can't wait to come back and experience the chef's tasting menu. Background On Visit: After running around doing errands around LA, we decided to venture to this counter spot which specializes in high quality, local seafood, and yucatan inspired dishes. Credit Cards: They're accepted. Restroom: Restrooms are available. They're located towards the back on the left side. Look for a sign that says "Meeting Room". Wait Time: Wait time can be long. We waited about 40 minutes. There is a designate queue for Holbox. When you get inside the food hall, you'll be directed to another line to stand before going up to the register to order. Location/Parking: Major cross streets are 37th and Grand. Not the greatest of neighborhoods. You might see occasional broken windows glass laying around. Located inside the Mercado La Paloma food hall. Parking can be found in the surrounding streets. There's also a small parking lot that you can park up front. It's not free though. Ambiance/Decor: Not much ambiance, but their seafood counter is neat. You can sit next near the small lobster tank that they have. If you don't find seats at the bar area, you can find communal tables through out the food hall and outside in their outdoor patio area Service: Service was alright. Staffer behind the cashier was informational about the shop, didn't make us feel rushed to order, and handed us a number to put on top of available table. The staffer located our table and brought us the food at decent time. Food Of Choice: 1) Taco de Pulpo en su Tinta (Braised and fried gulf of Mexico octopus, calamari ink sofrtio): Mmmmmm.... It was soo goood! I was quite impressed that it wasn't chewy. Octopus was succullent and everything that came inside the taco was quite tasty. 2) Scallop Aguachile (Baja bay scallops, lime-serrano-cilantro marinade, avocado): Mmmmmmm! So good again! Loved how the scallops were sweet and tender. Loved the lime-serrano-cilantro marinade. I started to dip other things that we ordered into the marinade. :) 3) Smoked Kanpachi Tostada (Smoked Kanpachi Tostada House smoked kanpachi, shrimp, scallops, arbol-guajillo sauce, avocado): Another item that was quite delicious. Loved the texture contrast of the seafood with the tostada. Break a little piece of the tostada, put some of ceviche on that piece you broke off, and lastly, take a bite or 2. The sauce was very good also. 4) Ceviche Mixto: You get not 1, not 2, but 3 different types of protein! Mexican shrimp, Yucatan octopus, and white seabass. Coming here on a Saturday around 3:30 pm, the wait from outside to ordering was approximately 30-35 mins. From ordering to receiving our food was approximately mins. We ordered the Ceviche de Kanpachi, (2) Tostada de Atun, Shrimp Aguachile, Smoked Kanpachi Taco, Baja Shrimp Taco, and Smoked Kanpachi Tostada. My favorite dish was the Smoked Kanpachi Taco, bursting with flavor. They have ample seating both inside and outside, the servers are great about asking if anything is missing or something is needed. We arrived at Holbox prior to attending an LAFC game recently, both of which are in close proximity! My buddy put me on this spot, saying "Were about to have Michellin Star Mexican food." Now I felt boujie. Excited none the less. The line can get very long here, patience, it is worth it. We got here at a not so busy time, however when we sat down a HUGE line appeared out of nowhere. My buddy ordered tacos de pulpo and scallops tacos, the tortillas are blue! I ordered Camerones mojo de ajo, scallops tacos. I started with the veggies (little tomatoes in like a aguas chiles thing) and the fresh avocado SO DELICIOUS. Mojo came with a toasted bread that is great for dipping into the excellent mojo de ajo sauce after you eat the shrimp. The shrimp were delectable. Comes with extra mojo de ajo butter as needed. The black beans and green rice tasted home made. I love scallops and the scallops taco was one of the best ive ever had. Honestly a unique Michellin-Starred-Mariscos-LA-Mexican-Food experience you can honestly only aquire here. It's a food court location with lots of tables first come first serve. It is Michellin Star Mexican food! Well deserved and I loved that we could the experience culinary greatness that is Holbox. ENJOY!!! Can't say enough about how pleasantly surprised I am with Holbox! The line was already out the door when I came on a Friday evening around 6 and I was worried it would be a very long wait, but the line went by quite quickly and we only ended up waiting 30 minutes. We were able to sit down at the bar which was also a bonus. I had heard about Holbox from social media and had my skepticism, but the food really does warrant a Michelin Star. We ordered 2 scallop and 2 octopus tacos, the ceviche mixto, and the branzino filet bowl. Everything was so delicious, but the highlight for me was 100% the ceviche mixto. I've never been a big fan of ceviche, but this was the best I've ever had. Overall, Holbox lives up to the hype and is definitely worth a shot! read more

Amazing food here, we ordered several things and everything was very tasty and well done. Grilled Hamachi collars were just divine, smoked fish taco was a huge flavor bomb, and the yellowtail ceviche tostada hit it out of the park with big balanced flavors. I could go on, but you get the idea - order anything they have with confidence. Sparkling lemonade hit the spot too, not too sweet. Their Michelin star is well earned, and while not super cheap, the price to quality ratio is excellent. Why only 4 stars? Parking is awful, the line lasted 1 hour, and you had to hunt for your own table. Having 2 people allows one to stand in line while the other parks, one to find a table while the other orders, etc. God help you if you are a solo patron. read more

The food and the service are great. When you arrive at the Mercado La Paloma, make sure that you wait in the correct line. When we arrived, the line was broken into an outside part and an inside part. Be careful not to accidentally cut the line. That being said, the line is closely monitored. While you wait in line, you can review the menu either online or you can ask for a paper menu to look at. The people monitoring the line are very helpful at answering any questions you might have. Once you get to the counter, you place your order, and they give you a number. You take the number to your table, and set it down at your table so that the servers know where to drop off your food. Since this is located inside of a food hall, there is seating throughout the building, and multiple vendors share the same seating. When the servers bring you your food, they are good about asking if you need anything else and helping you with anything you might need. There's a salsa station close to the counter where you order. There are four salsas available, but the two that I like the most both have habanero, my absolute favorite being the habanero kut. The salsas are spicy and also build on you, but they are also super flavorful so that you want to keep eating them even though your mouth is on fire. They were so good that I purchased a jar of my favorite one to take home. In terms of food, we tried the tostada de jurel, the ceviche, the Baja fish tacos, the scallop aguachile, and the churros, and my friend had one of the other fish tacos as well. We agree that the best dish was the Baja fish tacos, but she didn't care for the other taco as much. The ceviche and the scallop aguachile were good. The churros were okay. Hoblox is a one Michelin star counter restaurant located inside of a small food hall. We went on a Saturday around 4:30pm. When we showed up there was a line around the building. They offer free water outside while you wait in line and you can grab a paper menu from the host at the door to look at while you wait. We maybe waited 45 minutes. Once you make it inside there is another short line inside of the food hall. After you order, you are then given a number and you can seat yourself at a table inside or out. We ordered the large guacamole and chips, the smoked kanapachi tostada, kanapachi taco, camarones al mojo, filete el carbon, erizo sea urchin ,and sparkling lemonades. The seafood is insanely fresh. The ceviche is incredible. The branzino was tender. The guacamole was expertly made with both the acidity and seasonings well balanced. The lemonades were ok. The black beans were cooked well. Hoblox does a great job of presenting items you have likely had before but elevating them in an intriguing way. I can't wait to have an excuse to go back. read more

We've been here 4 times now and I have absolutely no notes - this place is 100% deserving of at least one michelin star, and the fact that it is relatively affordable is the cherry on top. Holbox is one of the many amazing restaurants in a food hall We've probably had almost 80% of the menu now, but our favorites and must orders are the Scallop aguachile, smoked kanpachi taco, tostada atun, live uni & scallops, the pulpo taco! I've been to mexico city and the food at Holbox is on par if not even better than some of the spots I've tried there! Be prepared to wait upto an hour on weekends, but you can avoid the wait by going on a weekday or lining up before Holbox opens! If you go with a group and end up facing a long wait, I would recommend having some people go in and try some smaller bites from other restaurants in the food hall (we love the tamales from Komal) since there's no wait for those! FYI - Seating is first come first serve, so it can be tough to find seating when the hall is busy. read more

I ordered the ceviche mixto and it came with 3 tostadas. There were lots of seafood and avocado slices. I also tried the taco de pulpo en su tinta. The octopus in both was very soft and tender. There were three soft scallops in the scallop taco. The smoked kanpachi taco was a little bit spicy but the smokey flavor hit the spot. Came here on a Saturday at around 1pm. There was a line that started outside the food court. The wait was about an hour. They also have water near the entrance if you get thirsty. We got the tuna tartar tostada, octopus taco, kanpachi taco, scallop taco, and the mixed ceviche. Chips and salsa were $1 so I went ahead and threw that in the order as well. Everything was excellent. The tuna tartar tasted fresh and the tostada was super crispy. Octopus in the taco was so tender and I couldn't tell that it was fried. The konpachi taco had a lot of smokey flavor, which I loved. Scallops were also tender and tasty. Mixed ceviche was a lot and also came with several tostadas. As for seating, you just grab any table and place your number on it. The servers will come find you. As for parking, we parked on the street and had no problems. read more

Holbox showed up on my radar when I was recently staying at a property not too far from the Mercado La Paloma in South Central LA. There's an onsite parking lot, but I took advantage of a nearby commercial zone curbside space because it was well past 6 pm during my visit. That was the end time of the enforcement period for such a spot. The mercado was the home to several vendors, however Holbox was by far the most popular eatery with a line that extended out the door. The wait from the time I entered the queue to when I got a seat was only about 20 minutes. I counted about 16 available seats at the bar which was where I sat. I couldn't tell how many tables in the communal dining area were dedicated to Holbox versus the other businesses. Awards from Michelin and the LA Times were displayed on a high shelf behind the bar. A chilled locker containing seafood products (e.g. tuna, sea urchin, etc) was visible behind the chefs. As I sat and observed before ordering, I noticed the staff was very deliberate and precise with their actions. The two-sided menu featured ceviches, tostadas, shellfish, aguachiles, and cocktails on one page which were the raw items. The other page was dedicated to tacos, entrees, sides, desserts, and beverages. A worker approached from behind me to take my order which was a Tostada de Kanpachi + Uni, a Scallop Taco, and the Pulpo a la Brasas. The first two items came together while the octopus platter arrived by itself later. The taco consisted of three pieces of pan-seared diver scallop sourced from Maine. It was garnished with salsa, caramelized onions, tomato, and marinated fennel. The acidity from the tomatoes helped cut through the meaty scallops. The tostada was made up of Baja kanpachi ceviche along with 20 grams of uni (sea urchin roe) sourced from Santa Barbara. The house made corn tostada was thinner and crispier than what I have been accustomed to. I guess that was why they were called tostadas raspadas ('scraped'). The uni was very fresh and sweet tasting. The octopus was described as mesquite grilled Yucatan. Normally when I order this item, it is served as one or two tentacles. In this case, it was six tentacles from a smaller mollusk that were incredibly tender. I don't know if it was cooked sous vide, but I have never tasted octopus with this type of soft texture. It was garnished with almond pipian along with avocado slices and cherry tomatoes on the side. A dish of cilantro rice and black beans came with the order. Three blue corn tortillas were also provided so you could make your own soft tacos. This presentation was a steal at $26 for a Michelin-starred place. The service from the staff was efficient. For a Latin American seafood counter inside a food hall, I was impressed with the quality of the food that I tried at very reasonable prices too. Holbox deserved the accolades and awards it has received. I had no choice but to give them a five star rating for my dining experience. read more

The food: + Octopus taco - one of their most-mentioned dishes, this was actually not my fave but it was good + Sea urchin with scallop ceviche - delicious and obviously gorgeous + Grouper tostada - best thing I ate.
