My friends and I recently did an LA taco tour, visiting various storefronts to find our favorite spot. Sonoratown was our first stop as it was highly recommended by my boyfriend's brother, and it did not disappoint. It immediately earned a spot in our top five favorite taco spots for carne asada in all of Southern California! The location that we went to is located in between Elysium DTLA and Perfumeria Starlux on E 8th St in downtown LA. There is only paid(?) street parking around the area that could be extremely difficult to find during work days. Because we couldn't snag a spot, my friends and I opted for takeout and didn't end up eating until about 30 minutes later. Despite the travel time, the tacos were still absolutely incredible--I can only imagine how spectacular it tastes fresh! My friends and I ordered the carne asada tacos, and my boyfriend opted for the cabeza. Before I even took a full bite, I tasted a piece of the loose carne asada and was blown away; it was perfectly cooked with a wonderful tenderness and deep smokiness. The use of a single, thin, handmade flour tortilla--rather than the standard double corn--was a total game-changer and exactly how I preferred my tacos. The salsas were equally impressive, offering fantastic flavor and a great kick. My boyfriend's cabeza taco was just as standout, featuring super-tender meat with a rich, savory profile. Wowowow! I wanted to order all the things but I exercised some restraint and just ordered the CARAMELO ($8.75 - Flour tortilla, pinto beans, Monterey Jack cheese, avocado salsa, salsa roja, avocado, cabbage.). I picked chorizo as my protein option. I also, of course, had to also add the smoky grilled poblano chile for $1.25. It was SO good and FLAVORFUL - it didn't even need the salsas. Although, I will note that both the salsas were lovely. The flour tortilla was clearly freshly made. Also, it was a massive portion. I don't know what I was expecting. Sonoratown recently earned recognition in the Michelin Guide as a "recommended" or "selected" restaurant. Despite it's recognition, I honestly wasn't too impressed. Casual interior, service wasn't the friendliest -seemed bothered answering our questions and located in DTLA (so street parking only). The chimichanga shredded chicken burrito was fondly reminiscent of those 99 cent frozen, microwave burritos that I ate as a kid. Came on a Saturday around 12 pm. Line wasn't too bad and the employees were friendly and helpful. There are a few seats both inside and outside, but parking is tough. Mostly crowded streets with metered parking. I got the chicken burrito. The tortilla was definitely the highlight and what really makes the burrito. Fresh, flavorful, and great texture. The filling itself tasted more like a standard burrito otherwise. Also tried the avocado sauce, which costs extra but was really good and worth adding. Overall solid spot. Had this bookmarked for ages! I showed up on Sunday night at 815p and there were only two parties ahead of me. I read rumors of lines, but YMMV depending on when you show up. The menu is quite simple, but beware that no prices are listed on the main menu, but they are on the paper menus. They accept Apple Pay/credit cards. I ordered the asada burrito and the pollo caramelo and added the grilled poblano (as recommended on Yelp!). The tortillas were the true stars -- soft, nice chew, with a buttery mouth feel (probably lard). The fillings were just ok. The inside reminded me of a Taco Bell 7 layer burrito -- a lot going on but all the flavors kinda blend together. I (incorrectly) thought the beans were refried, but they are not. Whatever is going on inside, I didn't find much structure. The burrito was the best. The caramelo was a lazily folded burrito. I read that it was like a quesadilla, but I couldn't disagree more. I would skip this next time. I spent $25 and it was a lot of food, but I wasn't impressed, especially given the hype and the fact that LA should really be the pinnacle of Mexican food. The steak burrito was perfectly balanced, packed with flavor, and every bite was outstanding. But the chicken quesadilla completely surprised me. Outside there are tables for bigger parties. I'm a flour tortilla kind of guy so this place was right up my alley. I had two tripa tacos. The crispiest tripa I have ever had without asking for them to make them that way. Bean and cheese burrito was nice and cheesy. The only thing I would say is order some extra salsa. The tacos need a little bit more in my opinion. Parking is hard to find in this area, you're lucky if you find a spot. I say give this place a try. Love coming to Sonora town when in Downtown it has been a couple of months since I've last been here and it definitely feels good to be back. I walked in and was instantly greeted by the staff. Once you place your order there is plenty of seating to eat both inside or outside. The ambiance is great filled with authentic artwork, history and pictures of family and friends.
