I have so many positive things to share, I don't even know where to begin. My best cat friend of 10 years, Lennon, began exhibiting symptoms of an illness just before Halloween. As the days went on he became more and more sick. His belly became enlarged, he was barely able to walk and it was obvious our time together was coming to an end. On Thanksgiving night, around midnight, I came home to find Lennon in very, very bad shape. He was clearly near death and needed immediate care. Lennon was never a patient of Pine Bluff Animal Hospital, but I needed to find the closest hospital to get him help as quickly as possible. Shortly after midnight, Dr. Schmidt agreed to meet my boyfriend and I at the hospital within 20 minutes. Dr. Schmidt immediately assessed Lennon and recommended euthanasia. Dr. Schmidt was so gentle with Lennon and handled him with such tenderness and clearly explained the options available to Lennon and what the next steps would be in a way that was both factual and empathetic. My boyfriend and I had a beautiful, private moment alone to say goodbye to Lennon and the doctor was so respectful of our time with Lennon. This next part I remember so vividly: when I walked back in the room after Lennon had passed away, Dr. Schmidt gently pulled Lennon's blanket up to cover him just like he was sleeping. It may not seem like much, but to me it showed Dr. Schmidt's character. He is compassionate, kind and caring, all of which extends past his obligation as a veterinarian. I chose to cremate Lennon and also asked for a clay paw impression. When I picked Lennon up to take him home for the last time, I looked down to find that Lennon's remains had been placed in a beautiful wood box with a brass nameplate and the clay paw was outfitted with his name and a heart. I was so touched that I cried in the parking lot for over 5 minutes. I've been meaning to write a note of thanks for a few weeks, but haven't found the right words. This review doesn't do my thoughts justice. To think that the veterinarian of a busy animal shelter accepted Lennon (a never before seen patient) on an emergency visit basis at midnight on Thanksgiving is absolutely incredible. I am humbled and forever grateful. One last note: shortly after Lennon passed away, I received a sympathy card in the mail, hand-signed by the staff with notes of sympathy, including Dr. Schmidt who wrote a note that was very touching. I was so emotional over the staff taking their time to remember me in my time of deep, deep grief. I can not recommend PBAH enough. These are folks who care deeply about animals, care about people and care about their hospital. read more

What an incredible experience we had at Pine Bluff. We have a Bernese Mountain Dog who gave us quite a scare when he was young by getting into his food unattended and causing himself a nasty case of food bloat. Thank goodness the stomach didn't twist and he was OK, but during the process we learned about gastropexy which is a procedure where the stomach is tacked to the abdominal wall. It won't prevent bloat but it will prevent the twisting of the stomach which requires emergency surgery and is often fatal. Just the thought of this procedure sounded scary as well so we researched vetranarians in our area. One name kept coming up, Dr. David Schmidt. Now I see why. Before the procedure Dr. Schmidt explained everything to us in terms we could understand. The process, the risks, the recovery, everything was super clear, and we left our beloved Mr. Woodson feeling like all that research had paid off. He has performed hundreds of these procedures and from the moment we met him we were relieved and knew he was in good hands. The best hands. The entire staff was professional and courteous and it made for what I would have to say is the most comforting experience we have ever had with any procedure on any of our furry little family members. I have been bringing my dogs here for almost 5 yrs now, the staff has always been wonderful and just had an experience that convinced me that my vet here is far superior to any of the vets in the city of Chicago. I had brought my dog into an emergency center in Chicago, because I returned from a business trip and his eyes were all red and he was having trouble opening them. I suspected some sort of infection and wanted to start treatment ASAP. The vet in Chicago was a complete jerk to me, told me over and over that my dog's eyes were NOT red -- I was just seeing his eye sockets because his eyes were sinking into his head due to a loss of muscle mass. He just kept saying this over and over "your dog's eyes are not red. They're fine." He seemed more concerned with wanting to charge me hundreds of dollars to perform tests on my dog. I at least did get a blood test done, for city prices, of course. Total vet visit in the city amounted to almost $400. Following week, brought my dog to Dr. Schmidt at PBAH. He determined that my dog's eyes were, in fact, very very red, that he had some sort of eye infection and was otherwise pretty healthy. He prescribed eye drops and oral medication. My dog has been taking them for just 3 days and already looks and seems to feel 10 times better than he has in the last month. All this for a whopping $76. What impresses me the most isn't just his knowledge and level of expertise, but how much he genuinely cares about the animals that he treats, and the courtesy he always extends to the pet owners. I get this same vibe from everyone I have ever encountered there. read more

Very disappointed with the service! Usually very good! Boarded my dog for four days! They did not bathe him, trim nails or do anal glands as I requested. Nothing worse than coming home from vacation and getting a stinky dog from your vet! The vet tech told me my dog was too aggressive to trim his nails! What a joke! My dog is four and never had any problems with aggression. After all, aren't they equipped to hand pets! I am looking for a new boarding place! read more

Saturday February 11th my 15 month old English Bulldog, Rubble, was hit by a car. We live in Dwight, and the only vet in town was closed. Luckily a woman named, Kathy, who happened to work at Pine Bluff in the past, stopped right after it happened. She was able to tell us that he seems fine due to his color, but recommended we rush to Pine Bluff. It's a 25 minute drive for us (speeding) but we made it in time to see Dr. Schmidt on an emergency visit. He was very professional, and courteous. Although we've never used this vet, or hospital, he treated us as if we've been coming there for years! Needless to say, Rubble's x-rays came back negative, and he's on his way to recovery! We did however find out he swallowed a nail on a separate incident! This dog is a tank, and Pine Bluff is a great place to take your pet. read more

This past Saturday, our senior dog, Watson needed emergency care, our Vets office was closed.We called Skinner Animal clinic,that was nearing their closing time and yet they waited for us to bring him in.When we arrived, we were greeted with help to carry him in and kindness.Watson got up ,walked, went outside to pee, I took this as a good sign and brought him home.Unfortunatly, as the day and night passed, he worse.So I look for 24 hr.service and called Pine Bluff.The Dr.met us at midnight and we put Watson down.What amazed us was he was the same Doctor we saw earlier at Skinner clinic.Dr.Schmitt was kind, compassionate and ever so gentle with our Watson.I would like to thank both places...Dr.Schmit you are the best, thank you for being there in our time of need in saying goodbye to our loved one. I have been a client at Pine Bluff for decades and have recommended them to many new dog owners. I worry that the practice is changing with an influx of new personnel and policies. I was charged for a physical on my dog when he was in for just a distemper vaccine. They did check his temperature and his ears. Neither the tech nor the doctor ever used the stethoscope on my pet nor had his legs, paws, lungs, abdominal area or throat ever been examined yet the paper that I took home said that his heart, lungs, throat, legs and paws all appeared normal. How would they know? Yet I was charged nearly $50 for this physical and I was only there for his distemper shot. He had a full physical in March and did not have any problems when I brought him in at that time. I only needed the distemper shot for him and he got his rabies shot that would come due in a month. Why was I charged so much for so little and nothing that I asked for? I will say that the Doctor and the tech were very nice and treated my dog very kindly. I have no complaints with his treatment. However, I am retired and I have three dogs, two of which are rescues, and I try to be careful with my spending. read more
