Paul clearly knew his stuff, was friendly and went out of his way to help me. My elderly handyman went to pick up the lumber and said the people were super helpful in helping him load the lumber. Today was my third visit to this store. The staff is extremely helpful. They make sure you got everything, and make the whole process of picking and purchasing completely effortless. They will also help you load. I have to say that as compared to Home Depots, this is the place I want to do all my construction purchase. Their inventory is always abundant, unlike Home Depot where you will never find everything under the same roof, and you have to wait a long time before anybody can even reach you to help. As a buyer at a large (100+ team) local area cabinet manufacturer with long term contracts that had limits, I could count on Pine Cone to fill a requirement professionally and with a reasonable cost for trade businesses. I would recommend them at a professional level. I also have bought lumber for my personal home projects. No, they didn't cut me any special deals, but they did cut what I needed accurately, at a very low cost, better than the chain stores, and I made some nice things for my home. They're mostly geared towards contractors, but any amateur can walk in the front door and get help. Dinged only one star because they're closed on weekends. They also close at 4:30 pm. Pine cone lumber is the best out there. I am a general contractor in the bay area and have used just about every lumber yard there is out there. Pine cone not only has the best inventory of material and hardware in stock, but they have the best sales guys as well. The guys at the counters are the best in the lumber industry knowing everything from HDU2 to a TJI 560 and everything in between. I have not had a better customer experience then when I go in there and talk to JR @ pinecone lumber. JR is one of the best (if not the best) sales rep at pine come lumber. I've dealt with this business once and was well satisfied. They have great service and a good selection of woods. Unfortunately, their selection of hardware and tools doesn't match what Southern Lumber had. But whose does? Although they're harder to get to on public transportation, I'll be dealing with them again. read more

Terrible customer service, poor business ethics, and overpriced (which might be OK if the quality was there). We ordered over $1200 of supposedly kiln dried Doug Fir (#1 KD Exposed) which we planned to use for an exterior project. The salesman promised they would "look through each piece" since they were going to be visible. When the wood was delivered, about a third of the boards were badly checked (the cracks went more than halfway through each piece). We emailed pictures but Pine Cone refused to replace the cracked pieces. So we went back to PC and tried to return the defective pieces but the general manager refused to even speak to us! WTF? We later found we could special order lumber at HD and we've been happy with the quality so we no longer use Pine Cone. read more

Let me start with saying all of the salesmen and people who work at the front desk were very nice and helpful. A number of people were always ready to help and asking to make sure every costumer was attended to. I came in looking to get some plywood cut to make a shelf, and was helped with a wonderful and knowledgeable employee named Ivan. He gave me some advice and I gave him my full cut drawing laid out from CAD. They did the job in a few hours and I came, picked it up and then went home. So far a 5/5 experience, but this is when things start to go downhill. When I got back, I realized that of my 5 pieces, they cut two off by exactly an inch. I phoned back, and Ivan said he was very sorry and that I could come back in and get them fixed. I made the 30 minute (now 40+ minutes with traffic) drive back. They redid the cuts and managed to get it right this time. I went inside, and asked if I could get some sort of rebate or store credit for wasting my time and gas. The employee asks the manager, and comes back and says no they cannot do anything for me. I then ask to talk the manager, Jack Dolan. In hindsight, it was probably a mistake. I have never in my life had a worse costumer service experience. It was bad enough that I finally made a Yelp account just to share it. Upon entering he flat out said no, but didn't leave it at that. He told me that it was absurd that I would go around blaming people for mistakes, and said that at some point when I grow up and got a job that I would make a mistake and want some sympathy. I am 25. He then mentioned a number of time that they are not Home Depot for some reason, and that he won't just "flop over" for me. Who knew that Home Depot is corresponds to treating your costumers with basic respect. After more insults, and making rude comments about me being young, he finally asks me what they did wrong, so I tell him. He scoffs at me part way through, and says if I expected furniture quality milling then I should have gone elsewhere. It was not like I was being picky about an 1/8", it was a whole inch, which is bad enough to mess up any wood working project. He then asks what I want, and I tell him just 20$ to cover my gas and time fussing around with this mess. Of course he feels like that is outrageous and acts as though I am trying to extort them. 20$ on a 180$ total bill. He then says that if I am not happy, then I can bring everything back he will give me a full refund, knowing that I don't have all of the boards and I will have to take another trip to see him if I want my money. On top of that he was willing to waste the lumber and work, and thus his money just to prove a point. He told me that was his only offer and that if I didn't like it then I would have to seek a lawyer to file litigation, unless of course I plan to grow up to be a lawyer. He then tells me they are closed and walks out of the office leaving me there. After sitting there for a minute, I realized he was not coming back and I left and headed towards the door. There Jack is, waiting for me with a big grin on his face propping open the door. I walked out. I have never met a ruder, disrespectful person in my life. Instead of just apologizing for the mistake, and if they really couldn't afford it just telling me so and that he was sorry, he berated me and treated me like a child for 20 minutes. For this, I give Pine Cone lumber 1/5 for being the singularly worse costumer experience of my life. If I could give a separate rating for the other employees, I would give them a 5. If you plan on going here, just make sure everything is totally right, and pray for no mistakes because if not then you will have to deal with Jack Dolan. read more

1st time customer. Their inventory seemed to be good quality, well stored. I bought a small order of redwood to make some outdoor furniture and told them I wanted to pick out the pieces myself to avoid damaged and warped boards. They said I could. So I placed my order and was told to drive around back. When I got there, the boards were already picked! They seemed OK until I got home and realized there was a very warped board that had be placed in the middle of the stack.The boards turned out 1/16" narrower then 5.5" they were supposed to be - enough to force me to change my templates. I'll likely try them again, but next time will check every piece and bring a tape measure. read more

My husband and I went to Pine Cone lumber around 7:30am yesterday, with a specific set of lumber we needed to buy for a chicken coop. We haven't done a lot of building, but we'd purchased plans online. We were helped by Brian Dolan, and he was very courteous - he helped explain some of the options for which types of wood, and we pulled together the entire order for delivery in less than 15 minutes, and it was delivered this afternoon. My husband even called to add a second custom piece of redwood cut to brace our window ledge for installing a window A/C, and they had it for us by lunchtime. We went with Pine Cone because we'd already bought some of our materials from a big box home improvement store, but they hadn't had everything we needed. Pine Cone had everything we needed, or was okay to produce it for us (one of the things we wanted was lots of 2x2s, some as long as 14', which they cut down from 2x4s). One of the things we'd been told was never to let a supplier pick your lumber for you - and when we'd been at the big box store, we'd spent a lot of time trying to select good pieces. Brian explained we wouldn't be able to pick our own for delivery, but that he'd add a note for them to pick nice pieces. When the delivery was unloaded, my husband and I were really impressed. This would have taken us a lot of time to find pieces that quality at the big box store (or we would have needed to shell out for a higher grade of lumber - and our chickens don't need anything fancy). I really appreciated the service. It's easy, when you're trying something new, to feel overwhelmed and out of place, but Brian was very patient and clear with us, and we're really pleased with both the service and the lumber we received. We have some more home-improvement projects planned this summer, and I expect we'll go straight to Pine Cone next time. read more

I stopped by on a Friday afternoon to get redwood decking for a repair job. I bought 14 6-foot lengths. They cut the boards to length out of absolutely gorgeous redwood ... it's prettier than the original decking ... and helped load it in the car, with a pleasant, helpful attitude.
