Easy to work with! I went in made a payment for 5 bags of soil I wanted to bag myself, picked up the bags, a shovel and funnel and picked up the soil. I was allowed to drive my car to the place I bagged my soil and load them in my truck. Great experience with South Bay Materials. The young gentleman who helped us was very patient, thorough, and extremely knowledgeable. We were buying some small boulders and asked for help. The person working at the counter was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the individual who was supposed to assist us outside was very rude. He was sweeping the grounds and just blew by us with all the dust and all. My wife got the worst of it since she was closer. He didn't even bother to wait until we are done in the area. When he came to us to assist, his first words, delivered in a rude tone, were: "Here's the deal, I can load the boulders into your car, but if you can't lift them out, then what good would that be?" He repeated this multiple times. It goes without saying, but it seemed like he didn't want us to buy the boulders and was trying to get us to leave. His attitude made it seem like we owed him something for helping us. We support local businesses but this is not how you treat customers. After we carried and grouped all the boulders we wanted, we called him again. This time, he told us to drive our car next to the boulders to load them, saying, "Unless YOU want to carry the boulders to your car." Very rude! At this point, I said, "Never mind. You need to work on your customer service," and we left. It's a shame--the boulders were nice, and the price was fair. We were ready to buy them, but the person working the grounds definitely needs more training in customer service. read more

Quick and easy to setup a delivery. Picked my choice of soil, called them to ask a few questions, paid over the phone and voila, a week later had the soil dumped right in my driveway. They called to confirm before they arrived, which was super appreciated. All good so far, noticed a few fungus gnats flying around the soil but meh, I think that's expected anytime we go organic. I recently DIYed my front yard landscaping, from design to execution all on our own, and I am so grateful that South Bay Material was part of it. Service: they actually have workers who are knowledgeable and experienced with landscaping with rocks. Never been to a rock yard before in my life, it was a bit challenging and intimidating. Serena was patient to answer all of my questions, reading me off the price list on all of the possible ones I asked for. She was also very helpful throughout my ordering process and answered my phone on a Saturday night when she was supposed to be off already. Eric showed me where to see things in a huge rock yard and helped me with all questions he could. Ray even started to tell me things before my question was asked. He was specially very experienced delivering boulders with his forklift - the day he delivered my boulders, he was able to place them wherever I wanted with precision and speed, and lots of patience. I can't be thankful enough. When he dumped the gravels and soil the second time, he even used a tarp to separate the two piles so they won't mix together. I am impressed! When I went back the third time for some other small things this past Saturday, the worker (don't know his name) came over without being asked to open up the pile of flagstone I called to inquire about - he was so on top of the game! Selections: They have a lot better selection than u-save rockery (the only other rock yard I know of in the south bay and have visited). Maybe this is not the best season for boulders, I have not seen as many selections of boulders compared to some other places California has (from youtube), and they don't carry California Gold boulders at this time around, so I had to pick some other ones, but they worked out eventually. They also have beautiful flagstones I found and had to bring home. Display and organization: Things are super organized. It's a huge place to walk around, but everything is showed cased well. Boulders are all marked with weight - this is super helpful. Kudos to all the workers who made all this happen. Price: Fair price! Depends on what you order, price could vary but it's your choice. I especially appreciated their boulder placement service which Ray did a fantastic job about. It's definitely going to save more if you oder in bulk because the dump truck is a flat fee. Tips: it could get crowded on weekends from my own experience. I was able to go on my off days/weekdays and very few people were there compared to Saturdays. If you want to get boulders, ask for a tape and marker, mark all boulders you want and they will walk through it with you to confirm the items, then you can schedule them to be delivered. DIY landscape isn't as hard as you think, just do your research, know what you want, and trust the workers here, you are in good hands with them. read more

I tried ordering 10 yards of material. I have four men waiting for the delivery. I speak with the manager and I asked him for an 9 o'clock delivery hour. He tells me that he cannot guarantee me what time of the day he is going to deliver and I wanted to pay $65 they would try to be on time. Great advice from the gal at the counter to use a combination of drain rock and decorative gravel to reduce the overall cost. Needed to increase the volume of the gravel a few days before delivery, very accomodating. Received a delivery confirmation call with a 2 hour window the day before the delivery. This 2-star review is related to the indifference of the front desk sales staff. They will point at a price list taped to the counter, and, if pressed, give vague estimates of delivery costs. My wife and I had a wonderful experience at South Bay Materials. We were doing a D.I.Y. project of a small walkway and needed a few flagstone pieces. The staff was absolutely wonderful with advice and suggestions. They went out of their way to help us. Note, we were NOT a big purchase, total was $45 in three different trips - we got 9 pcs of flagstone and a 70lb bag of rocks. They treated us so nicely. I bought a couple of cubic yards of decorative rock from South Bay Materials. The customer service was excellent - from getting a rice over the phone, completing the purchase and setting a delivery date. They called to confirm delivery the day before, and the driver called when he arrived at the site so that he could confirm where I wanted it placed. The went above and beyond by carefully putting the rock in the parking strip where I requested, rather than the driveway which is the more usual spot (and would have been easier for them). We are looking for pavers for a big job at the house and went here. I realized when I drove up that I had been here over 20 years ago and bought some beautiful slate that is on our planter in the front yard. This place is amazing and they have a big selection of bulk items like gravel, stones, mulch, sand, etc. They have a large selection of pavers and bricks too. They even sell boulders! I had a few questions about preparing the area for the pavers and got good and cheerful advice. Their prices seem to be about the same as everyone else. You have to be careful here as there are constantly trucks coming in and out and when they dump stuff like gravel the air fills with dust. Lucky I have a bunch of masks in the car! read more

If you are a DIY'er like me, this is the place to be. There's ALL sorts of material categories to choose from. Let your imagination run wild. Note that within each category (mulch, stones), there's a myriad of options (small birch mulch, medium birch mulch, larger different type of birch mulch) so there's quite a few options for you to choose from. It's easy to drive around and see what materials you can use for your needs. The place can be intimidating but really, it's not so bad. You can just grab a bag and start shoveling stuff inside it. For larger boulders and concrete material, of course you'll need help. TIP: If you're simply replenishing existing material from your home, bring a bag of it to compare so you know you're buying exactly the right type and size of what you need. read more

I've used South Bay as a source for boulders, concrete, top soil, compost and mulch for myself as well as my clients. Their location is convenient and you can check out the huge variety in stock from the comfort of your car! However, South Bay has apparently been victims of credit card fraud too many times, triggering a very strict policy. No longer are orders accepted over the phone, you must come in or FAX in a form. Not only that but the woman responsible for this policy isn't the easiest to work with. I had trouble placing orders and my contractor had difficulty picking up orders. She's very curt and as a professional Exterior Designer wanting to source material through South Bay, it's not the easiest. There's confusion between staff on handling this policy. I see no reason to handle customers this way. Today I took a very large order elsewhere (Evergreen). They were much more accommodating and even less expensive! read more
