They had such a thorough knowledge that they were even able to advice me on how various tools could or could not be used for off label uses. I was working on a sculpture in a very hard concrete. So amazing to have knowledgable staff, better than Home Depot and other big box stores and infinitely better than Amazon of course.. I special ordered an expensive front entry door at Sunnyvale lumber. I got a call saying the door was in--no details provided, so I went to pick it up and I found out it was crated vertically on a pallet very nicely. When I saw it, I immediately said, don't bother unpacking it here, this was meant to be delivered. I tried to schedule home delivery there on the spot, but the dispatcher was unavailable. I left my number and awaited their call. Two days later, my wife calls me at work, frantic, and says "they're here with our door! what do I do?" She doesn't know what to do with a door that's crated and palleted; she's late for work and leaves. I drive home from work to greet the delivery guy. I have to stop him from uncrating this very expensive prepainted door right there on the street. I have him place the entire package on the driveway as is, and I cover the entire package so it doesn't get wet from rain. Why couldn't they be considerate and call to say it was coming? The salesman was great taking my order, then jacked me on the delivery. No consideration. Really turned me off ever dealing with Sunnyvale Lumber again. El and El door company, which manufactured my door, was fabulous. read more

Service seems to be something that has gone by the wayside and when you encounter a company that treats you like a customer should be treated it really goes a long way. We've never had an instance where if they didn't have what we needed they couldn't reach out to their networks of suppliers to save us from having to go out and search around. Was buying redwood for a vegetable garden box. Bought 3 2x12x8, 3 2x4x8 and asked them to cut them down to 36" and 75"" which they did for no charge, so far so good. I checked the the dimensions of the 2x12s and the 2x4s and everything looked okay, however I didn't check to ensure that the depth of the 36" 2x4s were the same as the 75" 2x4s. When I got home, I found the 36" 2x4s were 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" and the 75" 2x4s were 2" x 3 1/2", obviously not cut from the same pieces! I guess they figured they could slip one past an amateur retail customer. A couple of days later I was over at Lowes and wandered by their lumber area and saw the same lumber considerably cheaper. Sunnyvale Lumber was $5.51 per foot or $44.08 for the 2x12x8. Lowes was $2.89 or $23.12 for the 2x12x8! Both were construction grade. Let the buyer beware. read more

We just completed a remodel, and before that I got rid of all my older bulky tools, including the table saw. So I hoped that instead of buying a new saw, I can find a good lumberyard, which can supply the plywood for my next project and rip it to size (I kept my miter saw, no problem with cross cuts). So after some research I decided to give Sunnyvale Lumber a try. I went there and asked them to get me an 8x4 furniture grade 3/4" birch plywood panel, and rip it into 8 ft. 6" wide strips. The sales person was very nice and professional, he understood me right away (or at least it looked like it), so my hopes were high. I asked how precisely they can cut, and I was told that while they don't guaranty the accuracy, the person who is doing it is a pro and has done it throughout all his career. The cost was quite high: around $140, labor included. At Home Depot a similar panel goes for around $45 - $50, but drugging a big heavy panel home, cutting it, and cleaning up after it is not fun, so for me it would well worth it. My order was ready very quickly, in a couple of hours, and I returned to Sunnyvale Lumber to pick it up. First, it took some time to find anyone who could give me my order. The sales office is separate from the rest of the lumberyard, and finding help was not easy, especially, since it was close to the end of a work day. But finally after 10 min of searching for help someone went to get my order. To my surprise, instead of a furniture-grade plywood they cut the 3-ply. Even more, instead of ripping it into 8 ft. strips, they cross-cut it in 4 ft. strips. I was very surprised. But then I decided to be nice to them and accepted it anyway. I really needed some short 6" wide strips, and was going to cut the strips from the lumberyard further, and also the project would get painted, so the grain didn't matter - as long as the cuts were made straight and square. I did ask them if the strips were at least cut accurately, and they said, absolutely yes. I wish, I had the straight edge and the square with me to check their work! I took my plywood home. Unfortunately something happened, and I was unable to use it for two months, but now I have some time to work on my project. So I took the strips and checked them out. The edges are not square, some are off by as much as 10 degrees. The cuts are not straight, bowed by 3/32" in the worst case. The plywood is not flat at all. And the 3-ply isn't any good for driving the screws into the edge, it has lots of voids, so it looks more like a frame sheeting, and definitely not furniture grade. I am totally disappointed. I am happy that other reviewers had a good experience, but I didn't. I wasted $140 - a half of the cost of an entry-level table saw, plus a weekend trying to fix the edges. And I will still have to get a new panel and start over. I only hope that at least I can use this plywood somewhere. So the lesson learned - buying the table saw and getting the lumber from Home Depot or Lowes... read more

Don't know much about construction, and went down with my wife to discuss our upcoming kitchen/bath remodel and bedroom addition. A friend had told me about a sales guy named Tim who had been real knowledgeable and helpful, so we asked for him, and it was Tim we were talking to right at the counter! He was super helpful, took us around the yard, and talked to us about all the options and choices we could make. He even let us in on some of the "secrets" that construction folks hide from homeowners. A great resource for anyone attempting their first project. Only problem might be that he is what they call an "outside rep", so he can be hard to come by in the office, but always does return phone calls pretty quickly. read more

We did extensive research on front doors before selecting a Simpson Craftsman door. The Simpson website listed Sunnyvale Lumber as a local dealer. I've lived in Sunnyvale for over 15+ years and have never come across this store. I'm so glad I did because we got excellent customer service from Cris Flores and the best quote on the door we wanted. There is a lot to buying a door (wood species, style, glass, measurements, etc.) and Cris took us through the whole process. He was patient with questions and did not try to upsell us. Sunnyvale Lumber probably had a competitive price on a door because they don't have a fancy showroom. But that also means you should have a pretty good idea of what you're looking for before you enter the shop. If you need to see a lot of different door styles in person, this might not be the place for you. We love our new door. Sunnyvale Lumber was a great find and we'll be going back! read more

Great place for Pros or for DIY who knows what they are doing. If you are a novice, they will try to help. But really, this place is for pros. We've been buying lumber, moldings and siding from these guys. We are happy with the products and they provide good customer service. Prices tend to be lower than Pine Cone Lumber down the street. read more
