Although categorized as a campground this is a lodge with cabins that rest along the shoreline of West Grand Lake. Best suited for fishermen and hunters who wish to enjoy the surrounding lakes, woods and streams. Each cabin has a kitchen, running water, and fully plumbed bathrooms. I visited here over Memorial Day Weekend (2011) to do some Salmon fishing and will be returning for years to come. Yes for the fishing but also because the owners of Grand Lake Lodge have excellent cabins to crash in after a busy day on the water. Free docking for your boat if your looking to fish the lake. Only $42 bucks a night if you have more than one in your party. Beautiful setting! Big Fan!

So you hike Katahdin (see my Katahdin / BSP review). Get all sweaty and nasty. Get beat up by the mountain. You could camp out at roaring brook (many people do this)... OR, you could drive 40 minutes to the Big Moose Inn. Check in, some very nice ladies / staff / help... You feel at home right away. It's a rustic, Maine type place... Moose and bear heads hanging from the wall. Comfortable couches and furniture in the lobby. You can sit outside on a warm summer night. Then you take a well deserved (hot) shower. You won't be able to do this at Roaring Brook. Put on some clean clothes; go down to the bar, order a Baxter IPA (tall / large pour). It will taste sooooo good. And all the food at this place was awesome! They have a bar menu and restaurant menu. Everything is good. Quesadilla, burgers, salmon, tri-tip... EveryTHANG. You belly up, get a nice meal in you. Go back lay down in comfortable bed. Watch a little TV. I was lights out by 9-pm... Slept soundly - like a rock! Next moanin' they have complimentary breakfast with hot breakfast sandwich and typical contintental breakfast stuff... Then drive the Golden Road back. Helluva trip.

Of…read morethe 3 campgrounds we have stayed in the south entrance Baxter State park area, they have the best showers and bathroom facilities, hands down the best customer service, and the quiet sound of water rapids to sleep to each night. They also have a wood fired pizza oven and the best fishing around right on site. Their web site could use a little work for more details (each camp site is different) however, unless they are fully booked, they will work with you to find the site that is right for you. Email seems to be the best contact option. Don, the manager, was extremely helpful and always went the extra mile to ensure our stay exceeded our expectations. If you are use to tenting or camping without hookups and your blue tooth ear piece and your tablet in front of you, you'll love this place. However, they do have limited electrical and water hookups if you need them on the RV sites. Showers are on the office side. The wild side (other side) just has out houses. This place really is a gem for nature lovers!

He was hustling and taking care of several tables and he was on his game. Food was typical "county" fare but it was good. The next time we visited was a disaster and of course that was the night we chose to bring guests. Apparently they had no serving staff so they sent over someone with zero waitstaff experience to try and take our order. This was after us sitting around for at least 30 minutes with no service. She was very kind but knew nothing about anything. I.e. we asked what soup they had and she said she had no idea. Then said "would you like me to ask?" I mean ... yeah it would be nice if you asked anyways it just went downhill from there. We were forced to repeat our order multiple times to multiple different people. Orders were not right when they did finally come out. Two people ordered fried haddock and both ended up with grilled haddock. The grilled haddock was overcooked, rubbery and had ZERO flavor. Cole slaw was bizarre and had a funny taste to it. Mashed potatoes had zero seasoning and no gravy. Gnats were everywhere. Overall we were there for like 2 hours because everything took so long. It was just a disaster. View is nice but it's not nice enough to compensate for everything else.

Although the grounds are well mowed the bathroom facility has bowing walls and peeling paint. When you go to a campground with no sewer hook up your expectation of the shower facilities is much higher. If that was the only problem here it wouldn't be so bad. The owner is nowhere to be found except on his motorcycle or his side-by-side. His dog is never tied up and is highly aggressive and came after my dog who was on a leash three separate times. I'm not talking about just barking but he tried to bite my dog numerous times. I have a lab puppy. I saw the dog attack numerous other dogs at the campgrounds. When we approach the owner he said the dog has a bark collar so he shouldn't be doing that. Just so the owner knows a bark collar does not keep a dog from biting other dogs. The other complaint that I think is a major one is the rules are not enforced at this campground. The partying went on till two or 3 o'clock in the morning with stereos blasting and drunks flying through the campgrounds on golf carts and side-by-side's. The police showed up because of a fight at 2 o'clock in the morning. The ambulance showed up. This site has serious serious safety issues On the bright side it does have a nice little beach it does have a dock system and the restaurant has amazing food with bean hole beans and a fish fry. If I only came for the food and the beach I would've been a very happy camper. But regrettably I will not camp here again. If you have small children, I would not recommend this campground unless you stay in a cabin away from the debauchery . It's reallllly bad.
