We spent an overnight at the KOA in Emporia and didn't want to cook. Emporia is sort of a food desert filled with chains and fast food, neither of which we are our favorites (not when you have Yelp!). A place called Val's looked good from the reviews, but it was closed (on a Saturday?), we really didn't have many other choices in town so we figured we'd head to Cracker Barrel. Bad experience waiting in an almost empty restaurant, so we figured why not here? We've eaten here before, and liked it. I'm guessing they are under new ownership or something? Gone are the ladies we have seen before, and they do a robust take-out business, though you can still eat in and the service is just as fantastic. We weren't in the mood for pizza, so Italian entrees it was. First off, everything comes in take out containers now. It's not great for the environment, but I get it. In this economy it's tough for restaurants. If they can save some money not having a full time dishwasher, then so be it. We started with side salads - Hubby had the Ceasar, and it was good. Fresh ingredients and the dressing was pleasant. My side garden was the same - fresh, with plenty of cucumber, red onion and tomatoes. The blue cheese dressing surprised me, as it was filled with chunks of blue cheese. I'm sure they do t make it themselves, so I was not expecting that. Nice! Hubby had Manicotti and really enjoyed it. The sauce was balanced, not too sweet, plenty of ricotta stuffed inside and a ton of melted mozzarella on top. My baked spaghetti was the same. HUGE portions for a really reasonable price. And the garlic bread was so good! Crunchy on the outside and oh so soft on the inside. Lots of garlic butter, too. I almost purchased more to take back to the camper! All in all a nice experience. This is not a Michelin star place. As long as you keep your expectations realizing that, you'll enjoy it. It's a reasonably priced red sauce joint with a really nice staff. The next time we need to eat in Emporia, we'll be happy to stop here. read more

"Decent Italian near intersection of I-95 and VA-58 in Emporia" Right beside a gas station and a motel on VA-58, right off I-95 in Emporia, sits this little spot. I'd driven by it many times and usually hit up the decent Mexican place in the motel next door, but my family wanted Italian, so we tried it. It did not disappoint. The place has pizza and lots of Italian standards, and it's very brightly lit with a few of much of the kitchen from the entry counter. As we entered, it was a little unclear whether we were supposed to order at the counter or be seated, so we ordered at the counter and then they asked us to take a seat and pay afterwards. The folks were friendly, and service didn't take too long. I ordered a chicken parmigiana, and my family got similar dishes. Food came out in maybe 10 minutes. The quantity was LARGE. I got many pieces of chicken, a heaping amount of spaghetti, and a side-salad with bleu cheese dressing. The salad was pretty standard -- nothing fancy. I liked the chicken parm and spaghetti sauce. The sauce was a little sweet, which I like, but my wife was less pleased with the sweetness of the sauce on her dish. Price was fair-- it's not dirt-cheap Italian, but it was also better quality than that. The chicken parm was something like $17, which for the quantity and good quality, is reasonable. This was a surprise! It's next to a gas station and doesn't look like much. The servings are HUGE! I shared the Eggplant Parmegiano and was still stuffed. Cheesy with a tasty red sauce. Crystal was a great server- friendly and anticipated what we needed. No, it's not a dress-up place with tablecloths etc. It's just a decent place to eat in a friendly atmosphere. read more

Passing through on I-95 and stopped for the night. Lights on at Pinos and several cars. Two girls serving and one man in the kitchen. They had a steady stream of dine in and takeout. We had an order of onion rings and each had the Italian sausage with cheese and peppers hot sub. Those onion rings were unlike any I've had. Really crispy, crunchy coating and not greasy. Hot subs were very good. Excellent melting mozzarella. Next time passing through we will try their pizza. They do a big take out business in takeouts. Only down side was they don't serve any beer or wine. Bummer. read more

Found this place via Yelp. We were staying at a hotel nearby and came here for dinner takeout. Located at a gas station and that usually turns me off but this place was large, bright and clean inside. There are tables inside that was available pre-Covid. It's takeout only now. Masks mandatory to enter. Employees were wearing them too. Plexiglass separated you and the cashier/takeout area. The food was delicious and great portions for takeout. The accompanying salads with our entrees was good and fresh. Would return if in the area! read more

I want to give a 3.5 star but can't and I can't give a 4-star. Moving on - On the drive home to NC the kiddos asked for pizza and we decided to try Pino's. Definitely a locals place-they had a steady flow of customers while we were there. This gave us hope for our meal. We ordered a medium pizza (move like a large), Caesar salad, cheese steak and onion rings. The pizza was messy, tons of cheese and toppings. Wished the crust was cooked a little longer and the sauce was a little sweet. The cheese steak offered good flavor, tons of cheese, roll didn't hold up though. The onion rings were onion rings and the Caesar was good. I'd try again and I'd recommend over Pizza Hut for sure! read more

Just had a few slices so can't comment much on the menu which is fairly extensive. The slices were good but quite modest in size. The bathrooms were blocked off and the seating area was not very clean or organized. Most of their business was drive through and pick up. Basically just another pizza place but in Emporia there are not any good restaurants so this is as good a choice as any other. read more

Decided to try this place since the review I saw gave it 4 stars. We ordered philly Cheese steak sub, cheese pizza and Italian sub. The meat in the subs is very skimpy and the meat for the philly sub tasted like it was freezer burned. The pizza tasted subpar nothing special more like a little above store bought. The Italian sub had 3 small slices of meat. I would not recommend this place to anyone. They need to step up better than what they are doing. read more

Although it shares space with a gas station this little treasure boasts authentic Italian fare and hand tossed dough for their pizza. HIDDEN GEM!!!! A shout out to Tiffany, Haley, and Fhatty (sorry if I misspelled names) at this little Italian gem of a restaurant! I stopped in to get some large pizzas for work and was I ever surprised! Fresh dough, baked fresh, and in 15 minutes I had 2 of the most amazing smelling pizzas in my vehicle. Came back later for some baked ravioli. Perfectly cooked, salad was wonderful (could have chopped up the iceberg some more but not gonna complain), and the garlic bread that came with it... great for mopping up all the sauce. Only complaint, small parking lot. This wonderful food stop is attached to a gas station but DON'T let it fool you! Can't wait to come back through to eat here again! Love this place! read more

When we are visiting emporia, the food selections aren't very extensive. We love Pino's! To be able to find a place with halal food and absolutely no pork- in the pork belt of the country- is amazing. I find my way here every single time I'm in the area. Great pizza. Great wings. I was staying at a hotel next door, so after checking out Yelp I decided to give it a try. Yes, it shares a building with a gas station, looks like it might have been a Wendy's at one time. They have a extensive menu including pasta dishes, pizza, calzone, wings, etc. The dining room is clean and bright. The server was very friendly ;). I ordered a small pizza, and it came after a very reasonable wait of about 10 minutes. I ordered sausage as a topping, and was pleased that it was sliced and not the crumbled up bulk sausage you normally find in many pizza places. It was served hot and cheesy. If you like cheesy pizza, this is the place to go. I would have liked a little more sauce however. All in all, the quality was above many other places, and I usually try to support locally owned businesses. read more

Don't stop at Pizza Hut just Drive a little down the road for this yummy local spot. They gave us individual pizza boxes for our kids to use as plates as we didn't stop and dine. The pizza was really good. The crust was perfect and not greasy. We also got a greek salad which I was really thankful to have. It was simple with pickled veggies and their homemade house dressing. We walked over from the Best Western across the street for some dinner. Super friendly and welcoming staff. The menu was quite diverse and there were daily specials. We got some amazing tasty buffalo wings which came with blue cheese and ranch dipping sauce. The wings were absolutely delicious. We got a large Hawaiian pizza that was also very good. Wow! We are staying at the Red Roof next door and let me tell you we are glad we stumbled upon this place! We got a meat lovers pizza and a cheese steak & both were AMAZING! Not only was the food great but so fast we got delivery due to not wanting to move the U-haul again and we ordered and what seemed like 15 minutes??? They were already knocking!!!! Guy was super nice who delivered! I may add we are in a hotel as I mentioned and we totally didn't ask for plates which whatever, but the delivery came with plates, napkins, Parmesan cheese, red pepper and ketchup for the fries that came with the cheese steak! 10/10 on service there thinking of the people on the road! Oh my, what a find. Hightailing up I-95, exit 11B in VA, I stopped for gas, needed to use the facilities, so I walked into this pizza place. There was a decent crowd for 5PM. So I figured WTF, I had 5 more hours to go on the road, I ordered 2 slices with pepperoni to go. The courteous and friendly guy at the pizza oven threw in two giant sized slices and minutes later they were in a small box heading out the door in my hand. Now the last time I ate a pizza while driving, was approximately 2001, a white pizza with sausage from Mara's in South Philly, and I remember that taste on my buds until today. Now I have a new taste to remember. These slices were very, very good for a normal location but excellent for a gas station stop. I was in heaven for the 20 minutes it took to wolf them down while driving with my left hand on the wheel and my right hand holding the treasured find. All that I needed was a beer, but I tend not to do that much anymore. ;-) read more

We got in late after a long first day from Savannah and the following day to Maine. We were staying next door and decided for the late night dinner of pizza. I read the reviews, because I would almost always rather have local fare instead of going to chain spots. Unfortunately, I was not impressed and was kinda sad how many people raved about this place. I felt like it was maybe 1 step up from those "Hot and Ready" Little Ceasar's pizzas. It had that weird consistency of a previously frozen crust, and the white pizza we had lacked flavor. There was a big group of people (obviously locals) enjoying their lunch. The service staff was great - I interrupted the lunch of the young lady who runs the register, but she was totally gracious and rushed to help. We got a pepperoni pizza - really really good! The sauce was tasty, the oven was clearly hot enough to cook it right, and the sauce was awesome... not sugary sweet like a lot of places. Would recommend again anytime I'm in the area. read more
