I love finding cute little spots when you're traveling. Did a trusty Yelp search and came across this place for burgers. Love that it's run by special needs employees. Our group of 5 adults all ordered some variation of burger and fries. All are cooked to order so everything is super hot and fresh. This is an excellent little burger joint. The double bacon cheeseburger with chili cheese fries really hit the spot. I'm told the bologna burger( not a burger, grilled bologna on a burger bun) was good too. Loved the prices. But know that it's a cash only place. The worst Carolina BBQ sandwich & slaw I've ever had. It was eatable but not impressed. Staff stood around talking till finally I had to ask them to clear & clean the only available table so we could sit & order. This is a very small restaurant yet we stood in a line 5 people deep for 20+ minutes while the staff ignored the fact that we all needed to pay for our meals so we could leave. The fries were good though & our waitress was nice but over all the service was AWFUL! Good menu choices & cheap but not worth the hassle of poor service. I am nostalgic for this lunch counter. So many memories from my childhood. Whenever I am back in the area, I try my best to swing through for an all the way burger and some hot dogs with chili/slaw to go. Second Street Lunch is the best lunch spot in Roanoke Rapids. We love this place! We were greeted by a young gentleman who let us know that they were quite busy for lunch, and that there would be a 5-10 minute wait. He was very kind and gave us updates on our table. When a table was open, we were seated, and ordered a feast of hot dogs, hamburgers, chili cheese fries, sweet potato fries, and of course, sweet teas. The hot dogs are unfussy, and you can order them with any combination of cheese, onions, cole slaw, or chili ("the fixin's") - or all four, which is what I did. It is and forever will be the most delicious hot dog EVER. It's a taste that can't easily be replicated, and can only be found in this little unassuming diner that has been around forever for a reason - and that reason, I think, is the hot dogs. The kids loved their hamburgers, the old folks loved their hot dogs, and we even ordered another round of hot dogs for the table. Our waitress was exceptional, no-nonsense service, hard-working, and took care to ensure our order was exactly as we ordered. She was the kindest waitress, and we loved her charm. My mother is from this town and when we would visit my grandmother this place was a favorite. The ladies working there took your order and then made your food. The tickets were handwritten and left in your table. I always ordered the pizza burger and the hamburger all the way,that's with slaw and chili. My husband teases me about the flatest burgers in the world coming from this place. The hotdogs I remember being florescent pink. My kids loved them. I am nearly speechless! This was amazing, I had no idea what I was getting into. I just asked for a double cheeseburger all the way and it came to me with coleslaw and chili on it. I almost fell out of my seat it was so delicious. I'm racking my brain trying to understand what I must have done to earn the good karma that enabled me to run across this place. I got a side of delicious creamy Mac n cheese and a fountain drink as well. The whole thing only cost me like $7. I can't even understand it, I'm in shock. I went ahead and tipped them $7 and change because the servers, front counter staff, etc were so nice to me even though I was so obviously not a local. Also, because what I just ate was well worth double what they charge for it. I would come back to this town strictly to eat that burger again. So I'm in Roanoke Rapids, NC this past weekend and I have a hankering for burger that's different from what I get up in VA. I was definitely in the right place for something completely different from the norm. My cousin just moved into this town and she didn't know any place either so thanks to yelp, I found this joint, hidden in a little corner, packed with locals. Atmosphere was like a super small mom & pop burger joint with very little seating area. The service here was great. The waitress super nice and she knew we were new to the area and would be slow ordering but she was patient with a smile. I had the double cheeseburger with bacon lettuce tomato with ketchup. These burger was ultra thin. It's one of those styles were the meat is in a ball and when it hits the grill, they squash it down into a super thin slice. It was fantastic. Lots of flavor, a little crunch on the edge, and very juicy. I could have 3 more of these babies and add like 5 patties to each bun. The price was excellent, coming from a guy who's using to paying the ridiculous prices here in NoVA. it was $2.99 and each extra pattie was an extra dollar. They were out of onion rings but the fries were great. Overall, this was a great place to get a burger and I would have loved to get the other stuff they had there like hotdogs, etc. I took a star off cause the buns weren't anything to write home about and the fries might have been from Food Lions, not sure what the waitress meant. I visited this little "hotdog place" over the years when I visited relatives nearby. It is a tiny place but the food was great. Unfortunately over the years the food has steadily gone from good to ok to not very good. The hotdog chili is like water & the hamburgers have hardly any meat on them, a real shame. We were passing by on 95 and decided to look for somewhere to eat and found decent reviews on this establishment. This little hometown cafe looks like a passed down family business. It's within a very depressed town and is very old and sad looking but the hospitality was not lacking. Very nice and friendly staff. I ordered a cheeseburger and fries and I recommend you order a double cheeseburger because a single patty is almost nonexistent. I grew up in the neighborhood where Second Street Lunch is. Growing up I LOVED this place. And even as an adult, this was, hands down, THE BEST BURGER AND HOT DOG IN TOWN! There are some local places in town that used to come close, but at the time just couldn't beat Danny's hot dogs. And the owner at the time, Danny Haislip, was a riot. He's prior service US Navy, and as a prior service Marine, he and I always went back and forth with one another in jest. I once told my friend, "I pay for the trash talk, and get great food for putting up with Danny!" Since, another generation has taken over 2nd Street. The burgers are shrinking, the quality has gone out the door, and the prices are rising. These 3 things never happened with Danny often. I don't recall my Annwich being a smaller version of McDonalds McDouble, but that's what I got on my last trip. And the hotdog chilli tasted old. I feel like this place has lost its touch as the new owner tries to make a name and add to much to what was already great. read more

We stopped here for lunch yesterday during our drive down Highway 95. We shared a cheeseburger and a chef salad. It did take a while for us to get our lunch. However, it was excellent. I grew up in Roanoke Rapids, my Grandpa and I use to walk from Madison Street to 2nd Street lunch when it was in a side shop which wasn't very big, I think he had 2 tables in there where you could sit and eat.
