Piolin is probably my main go-to Peruvian restaurant. I love the calm atmosphere. It seems like even when it's busy, patrons are calm and the flow is smooth. The food is amazing, specifically the Lomo Saltado. I'd like to say I get adventurous but honestly I usually stick to the Lomo. It never disappoints. The Chicha beverage is also my favorite. Refreshing and delicious. I doordashed a 32oz cup the other day with some food, and it was so great to open my fridge and enjoy it when I wanted it. Went out with a Peruvian friend to Piolin on New Britain Ave. place was nothing fancy with limited seating, but clean and reminiscent of many of the ethnic restaurants I grew up with in Hartford. Server was friendly and helpful. Only ding was that we got our meal before our drinks. We had the Jalea fried seafood plate which was plentiful, well cooked and tasty. We also ordered a one of the steaks medium rare, but came more in the medium well side. Price point was very considerably low for the amount of food we received, so the steak was not the best cuts, but well seasoned. Had dinner Friday night after work. I wanted to treat myself after a hard week at work. I love Peruvian cuisine. I ordered their signature brasa a la pollo. I was not impressed with the the presentation unfortunately. The whole meal was wonderful, but was crammed on a small dinner plate. I ordered hot tea, it was lukewarm at best. **Please Note: this is only for the FOOD as we ended up getting Delivery and did not go to the restaurant** So we decided on takeout/delivery Friday night when we were in Hartford. It was the day after we had a comedy of errors when traveling and we just wanted to stay in. Scrolling through the options we came upon Piolin. After going through the menu we decided why not? Ended up ordering the Pollo a la Brasa (half a rotisserie chicken), the Mixtura Piolin (rib-bye, pork, chicken, shrimp and sausage), and the Ceviche Piolin (fish, shrimp, mussels, and calamari). This was more than enough food for the 3 of us and it hit the spot perfectly. The Ceviche was delicious, and honestly maybe we should have had 2 orders it was so good and full of flavor. The pollo was very moist and flavorful. And the mixtura...delicious. The extra sauce that came with the food for dipping was soo good. I can't even begin to describe it, some kind of curry adjacent flavor I think. Piolin on New Britain Ave in Hartford may not be the first place where I ate Peruvian food, but it's the first Peruvian restaurant that captured my attention. When the individual dining habits of a single person make way for the collective dining interests of a family, sometimes you don't visit certain places that you love as often as you want. That's unfortunately been the case with Piolin, but it felt good to be back. I have always loved Piolin's House Chaufa. If you like Chinese style fried rice, you're going to love Piolin's Chaufa. It's similar, but far more jam-packed with stuff. The House Chaufa has shrimp, calamari, shelled mussels, beef, chicken, egg and some veggies. You could go other ways with ingredients. All beef. All seafood. All chicken. But I like the variety. The rice arrived as a giant, neat mound. The rice had great flavor and texture. With the exception of the calamari, which is chewy by nature, the seafood, meat and poultry were all tender and tasty. I could go on and on about the accompanying "aji" sauce (aka the Green Sauce) and how it's zingy, garlicky, herby, mild heat makes it one of the best condiments in any cuisine. But I've done that in other reviews and I don't want to repeat myself. It's glorious! Piolin's Chaufa is so good, that it doesn't need the aji. Who's going to turn down aji though? It's the type of thing that gets you on a "No Fly" list. I can't emphasize how much of everything there was. Look at my pics, you can see the shrimp, calamari, chicken and egg busting out of the mound. After you look at the full mound pic, look at my leftover container. I may have three meals left and the ratio of seafood, chicken and beef to rice is still very strong. Service was welcoming and efficient. The restaurant is nice inside. The parking situation can be rough. However, if you're like me, I never let that get in the way of great food. I want to mention that there have been and may still be other area restaurants with the name Piolin. I've always assumed that they're related, but don't know. I do know that the New Britain Ave. Piolin has always been my favorite. If you've enjoyed Peruvian food at other area places, you're not alone. I have too. I got there as they were opening the faint scent of a clean restaurant in the air gave me confidence that they care. A friend from work suggested this place and made at myself for not trying it sooner. I ordered the Rotisserie chicken and the steak fried rice! The first bite of the rice lit my eyes up, perfectly seasoned, tender strips of steak, eggs sooo good. The rotisserie chicken was delicious you can taste the seasoning down to the bone, both juice and tender. I can see why it's a popular lunch spot for people who work in the area. (My DIL highly recommends the onion salad.) Portions here are really huge. Each entree is good for 2 people. Parihuela soup was very flavorful. There was a ton of sea food in it - fish, shrimp, mussels, crab and calamari. I took my mother to this restaurant. She is disabled. When we got to the restaurant and made the line for a while, they told us when it was our turn that the wait was 45 minutes. Because the wait was so long, we decided to go to another restaurant. Today I called to let them know I'm on my way with my mother and her aide. The guy says on the phone that they do not make reservations. We just arrived at Piolin. We got a bottle of Chicha Morada with ice on the side and a water bottle. While the server was taking our order I was about to serve the ice to my family and there was a cockroach on the ice. The server apologized and then went to get a new ice bucket. All the ice comes from the same place. Why would I want more nasty ice? I was mortified. I wanted to leave but I had young ones in my family that were pretty hungry and there was no other Peruvian restaurant open. That thought vanished once I had the Arroz Chaufa from Piolin (Peruvian fried rice) think of Chinese fried rice with latin flair and flavors very delicioso. The roasted chicken is also worth trying "pollo a la brasa". They have special during the week which is great. Their portion are on the big side and the prices are reasonably affordable. Parking might be difficult to find but if in a rush you can order ahead and pick up or they also deliver. Overall great place for authentic Peruvian food. After a shower I decided to sit down and eat my dinner and the chicken was old and hard. When I called to make a complaint I was told I ordered my dinner at 8:40 and just now calling. Not a big fan of fries with meals but that's personal preference. Very small restaurant and at one point it got a little loud. Went in for dinner at 5:30pm on a Saturday. We didn't have a reservation so we put our names on the waiting list. We were waiting for about 10 minutes, when another party of 10 came in. They also did not have a reservation, but one of the people of that party starting complaining in Spanish, they should not have to wait for a seat. There were 3 other parties waiting when she walked in, but the employee seated the party of 10 before any of the people that had already have been waiting. So because I don't speak Spanish, I don't matter!! I guess a party of 2, that had there names on a waiting list are not as important as a party of 10 that just walks in. Luckily, the other person in my party speaks Spanish, otherwise I would have not know how much people that don't speak the language are treated!! I pass by Piolin Restaurant on New Britain Ave. a couple of times per month but had never heard anything about it so I never paid it much of my mind. When my husband and son said it was on their radar for lunch following an enthusiastic recommendation, I wasn't even remotely excited but decided to give the Peruvian restaurant a try. The welcome from the waitress was "non existent" and initially I felt slightly irritated and just wanted to leave. But after informing her this was our first visit, her attention improved. I ordered Pescado a lo macho a Fried fillet covered with seafood, served with half of a boiled egg in an interesting and unexpected sauce with a delightful flavor. I swapped out the Brown potato for Yucca Fries and now I'm hooked on them. (See photo). My son ordered the House Specialty, Ceviche Piolin, which came with a side of Fried Calamari, steamed Yucca, sweet potato, and corn on the cob. I didn't think he would enjoy it, but was I wrong. Actually, we both did. I couldn't keep my fork out of his plate! Hubbie ordered Chaufa de camarones, pollo & carne, (which was basically fried rice with a lot mix-ins).
