Great spot! Even for families. The entrees were fantastic and they even allow them to be split and they divide it into two entrees which was fantastic for my wife and daughter who are lighter eaters. The pork chop was a favorite, and the baked potatoes are Idaho sized so be mindful but it's recommended. The mocha pie was a favorite even for those of us who don't care for dessert or care for coffee flavored items, so give that a shot it was very good. After several bad experiences the past two seasons, we decided to give it one more shot (with high hopes one of our favorite places would be at a minimum, "decent"). At 8pm they are out of prime rib, halibut, trout, artichokes, ribs, and salad! WHAT is going on? I do understand this sort of thing happening on occasion, but literally the last 4-5 times anyone in our family has attempted eating here, it has been such a bad experience like this! Bad food, out of main staple items, or summoned to the dreaded basement... Unfortunately, after 46 years of dining at Pioneer, I think we are done! The past several seasons, something seems different. Always out of MANY items, and service is blah! It was literally a family favorite, so it's sad to even be typing this!!! But it's mud season, so it was a little strange to me since they weren't completely busy. The menu is small, but that's what they do. Great local decor with a lot of local, Native American and hunting items strewn about the interior with an old log cabin vibe and bar. Sat in the bar so we could watch the Sunday games. Waitress was great. Made suggestions when asked and was attentive. Artichoke app was just ok. The butter and dipping sauce were bland. Artichoke was cooked well and had enough meat. Chips and salsa on the table is complimentary. Kind of out of place but a nice touch for bar snacks. Cocktails were very acidic. Switched to simple mixed drinks instead. Filet was cooked perfectly and was good quality. Choice of steak sauces were all good and worth trying. Comes with rice pilaf and grilled asparagus which were very good. Pioneer Saloon is such a cool spot. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit -- packed with antiques everywhere, even pieces tied to Hemingway. It feels historic and cozy at the same time. We went around 3, and just a heads up: dinner starts at 4 (even though they open at 3), so don't ask for the dinner menu too early like we did Between 3-4 they have appetizers, and we tried the salmon and bread -- totally new to me and I loved it. For dinner, the baked potato with steak pieces was excellent. So hearty and flavorful. They even offered us a free pork chop, which was such a nice surprise. We finished with the mud pie -- absolutely delicious, but honestly way too much after everything else. Come hungry! Great food, great vibe, and such a unique place. Definitely recommend. read more

The blue cheese salad was by far the best thing that I had. Tiffany was an excellent server and really took care of us. The salad had so much yummy dressing and I loved the sliced carrots. I got the top sirloin and a baked potato. The baked potatoes is a little dry on the outside. The tops sirloin was cooked, medium rare and was really tasty. I'm not a huge Stake guy, but I love the portion size. Not too much. The inside is really fun with a lot of taxidermy animals and a large old, wild West posters, and memorabilia. I like the mission of this restaurant that it tries to reflect an old Idaho in the wild wild West. Our complaint is the scheduling and seating. We went early, got our names on the list and were told an hour 30. We came back after then we were told 20 to 25 minutes, and then we came back again and then we were told 15. We visited the restaurant at 4:00 PM and asked to put our name in for around 6:30 PM. At that time, we were given a pager and told to return prior to 6:30, and that the pager would serve as our place in line. We came back at 6:07 PM and notified the hostess that we had arrived. We were told they would buzz us when our table was ready. After waiting until 7:15 PM, we checked in again. At that point, the managing party, Gina, told us we had not shown up on time and that we would need to continue waiting. When we politely asked how much longer it might be, we were told we were fourth on the list. We were never buzzed. At 9:30 PM, after waiting several more hours without any notification, we returned the pager and asked what had happened. Gina stated that she had buzzed us multiple times shortly after we left the stand at 7:15 PM. However, we had been seated at a nearby bar the entire time, where another customer actually received a buzz during that period. Overall, the experience was extremely disappointing. The wait time was excessive, the communication was poor, and the interaction with the hostess felt unnecessarily confrontational. I thought the hours were confusing because when I showed up, I hadn't seen anything that the restaurant opens at a later time and the only food available was chips and salsa. It took 3 tries of presenting the wrong check to get the right check!!. Manager had to step in to process the credit card - no apology, no waters, nothing. The food was spectacularly good, and I definitely recommend getting the Idaho baked potato as a side. The decor was cool too. The service was ok, felt kinda like we were being rushed, and the steak was good and tender but closer to medium instead of medium rare. Our server was wonderful and did a fabulous job taking several overcooked dishes back to the kitchen. The quality of the food was another disappointing dining experience. It's very sad to see an old time vintage Ketchum restaurant that offered the best prime rib for decades turn into a mediocre establishment. Don't let the hype of the "saloon" by visitors blur your vision. I grew up on a ranch in the Wood River Valley and have unfortunately seen the quality of the food decrease over time. Don't wait your money on a $54 prime rib that had to be returned for being overcooked and that now only comes with some rice. I yearn for the good old days where the prime rib was cooked to perfection, was juicy & tender, and came with a famous Idaho russet and a salad. Seriously...you've got to purchase a baked potato and a little salad separately. I was hoping they would redeem themselves this trip. read more

Still one of our favorite places to eat in Ketchum. We make a special trip to spend the night in Ketchum on our hunting trips so we can have a steak dinner at the Pioneer. We usually sit at the bar. Bartenders and staff are friendly, attentive, and helpful. The food is always great. Have to get their version of a Hula pie for dessert. Definitely big enough to share! Somewhere in over 50 years of multi-generational family visits to Sun Valley, Idaho, a visit to Pioneer Saloon has been a mandatory tradition. We always knew "Pi Oh" for its slabs of amazing prime rib and enormous baked potatoes (Jim Spud), but over the years we have also branched out to the jumbo artichoke, barbecue ribs, grilled veggies and fish specials. This trip, nine of us feasted on the ribs (reserve them right away if you want to order these--they sell out!), prime rib, side salads, trout, and we even had a little room for some berry cobblers for dessert. Pi Oh does not take reservations and you can line up when they open at 4 pm. Just know that they won't consider you "in line" nor seat you until your entire party is there. We ate downstairs and got to pass by the open kitchen on our way there. The kebabs were huge and the burger looked amazing. Had they been open for lunch, we probably would have gone back to try that! On our way out, it was wall-to-wall people enjoying the bar. The crowd were happy to part to let us out--so there was more room for them! Street parking only. We waited almost an hour on a Tuesday night in early August. The place was absolutely packed at 6:30pm. Other restaurants on Main Street in Ketchum were almost deserted at the same time. Let me tell you....it was totally worth the wait. I had a ribeye steak and my wife had a filet. They were incredible and the teriyaki rice pilaf and asparagus were the best. If you are lucky enough to have Pablo as a server you will have one of the best dining experiences ever! This is a historic Ketchum location and the history drips from the walls. The photos that adorn every wall are so cool and will feel totally nostalgic. This was a 10/10 experience. read more

Super cool western style steakhouse. When you walk in, it feels like you traveled back in time to the 1900s! Tons of artifacts and awesome memorabilia from the olden days. Service could be better but I'm not complaining given it's always busy and the vibes are super old school. Food was great but slightly under-seasoned. Ate twice in one week randomly for different occasions. The first time was our first visit to Ketchum and we had heard that the pioneer saloon is iconic! It was a Monday and we were seated immediately. We ordered a couple cocktails and I had the ribeye with baked potato and my friend had the filet with rice. Ribeye was ok, not great, but not bad. 2nd visit was a party of 8 on a Thursday. The wait was not too bad. We all had a couple drinks and I went with the filet and potato, my husband had the shrimp and prime rib. The filet was a much better choice compared to the ribeye! When you first walk in it looks like it's just a dimly lit bar, but the restaurant is in the back. The manager seemed to have been the one to seat us and he was friendly and accommodating. The only negative I'd say was it felt a little crowded in the back. Our server was also great and got us everything we needed. We loved that we could watch the kitchen and food being prepped while we waited. When our prime rib entree and Jim Spud came out we were pleasantly surprised by the portion sizes. While exploring out Sun Valley and Ketchum, we were looking for a spot to grab a pre-dinner drink. I noticed this old saloon on the main drag of town and knew that it was the spot. We hopped a squat at the bar (of which had plaques of the regulars name; I was at Piper Reed's barstool) and were well taken care of by Andi the bartender. He was welcoming and made some killer bourbon cocktails! Before we knew it, we were hearing stories about the saloon's past and even realized that we were all originally from Chicago. It was meant to be! While we were tempted--and invited--to stay for dinner, we already had reservations across the street. Nonetheless, everyone talks about the Idaho Trout, Prime Rib and Mud Pie that are all to die for. Guess that's a reason to come back! From the minute you walk in you're transported back in time. I had to step away from the friendly bar conversations to explore the inside of this historic gem. History covers every part of the building from floor to ceiling. Tin ceiling tiles, cowboy and old Western relic collections, and everything outdoors or backwoods can be found here. I particularly loved the full Native American headdress on display, the knotty wood staircase's railing, and the breakdown of various types of barbed wire--who knew there were so many and all named (similar to sailing knots)!
