I work in food service (as a chef and owner) of an establishment here in Idaho. I am highly educated (masters degree) and very experienced career wise. We are visiting town to support an event for the culinary world and wanted to try some local establishments. I took my wife and the food was wonderful. We had the yellow tail and two pasta dishes. The yellowtail was perfect but I did feel as if the past was a little "too on the "al dente" side. The being said, I did thoroughly enjoy the food. However; from the moment we walked in the door, we were treated as a nuisance and felt unimportant/unwanted. The hostess was atrocious and made it very clear we were being judged while rolling her eyes to common questions like "do we need a reservation or can we be placed on the list or seated." After she did common tasks during our conversation (and briefly stepping away), we were able to get her to seat us (after asking again). This started us off with hesitation which was only further exacerbated by the staff taking our order and not refilling our alcoholic drinks. We love to enjoy experiences and are not afraid to spend our hard earned money - sadly, this made our time here short lived. We were not informed if there was a dress code that established our treatment/experience here. If so, the messaging would be received poorly due to the fact that we were wearing similar -to- identical attireTo the wait staff. We were excited to try The Covey and left feeling a little disappointed. First, The quality of the yellowtail appetizer was excellent. It was fresh, beautifully prepared, and clearly handled with care. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience didn't quite live up to the quality of the ingredients. Both pasta dishes had an unusually chewy, almost sticky texture that wasn't for us, and our empty glasses sat for about 20 minutes without anyone checking in. We would have happily ordered another round. What stuck with us most, though, was the feeling that we were being judged for walking in wearing our work clothes. As fellow restaurant people, we understand showing up after a long shift, so it felt a little out of place, especially in a room where the dress code for guests seemed far more formal than it was for the staff. Hospitality is about making every guest feel welcome, regardless of what they're wearing. There's obvious talent in the kitchen, particularly with the seafood, and we genuinely hope this was just an off night. We'd be happy to give The Covey another chance. read more

We had a shocking experience at The Covey on Valentine's Day. We made a reservation for 8 well in advance. The day of, they called to say they could only seat 6 and would not offer any alternative, including splitting into two tables of 4. When we said we would rather cancel to stay together as a group, we were told we would be charged $100 per person if we did not show. We came in before our reservation to try to resolve it in person and spoke with both the manager and the owner, Jesse. Instead of working toward a solution, we were met with a dismissive and hostile tone and again threatened with the $100 per person charge. At our reservation time, 6 of us showed as requested. We were then told they had given our table away because they assumed "we wouldn't have a good time and would leave a one-star review." They would not confirm whether we would still be charged. When my husband and I calmly asked for a written note confirming their system only showed a reservation for 6 so we could take it up with Resy if needed, the manager yelled at us in front of the entire restaurant, demanded we leave, and threatened to call the police. Whether this was a Resy issue or an internal mistake, the way we were treated was unacceptable. We ended up at Enoteca instead and had a wonderful meal with warm, gracious service. An absolute Sun Valley staple! I hadn't heard of this spot before, but they were one of the only restaurants in town who took reservations, so our group of four tried it out. We were so happy that we did! We sat down and had the cutest view of the mountain outside; this place felt like a cozy house. It was also fun that when sitting inside you have a view of the cooks doing their thang. Our server was kind enough to give us her recommendation when we were trying to decide between two dishes. My pasta was delicious, and the portion was perfect. I'd definitely recommend trying out this spot when in Sun Valley! read more

The two servers for the over a dozen tables were slow and distant, no emotion and did not care for their customers. It took a half hour to get my order for food and my appetizer came out and was charged $25 for raw scallops after another 25 minutes my food finally came out and I got 6 ounces of Wagyu Beef on mashed potatoes for $50. Please see attached picture so I've got a pasta that was supposed to be brisket with pasta and could taste nothing but lemon. My wife did not order lemon pasta, but ordered brisket pasta. We took a bite of each and asked for a check. There was no request of what is wrong and no effort was put into trying to make things right, but it was only given us the check in a hurry to get us out that was the fastest part of the service. read more

We've lived in Sun Valley for many years, but hadn't made it over to the Covey yet and had been excited to try it with friends for many months. The decor and vibes were lovely. Great bar and table layout, not too noisy and a really nicely conceived open kitchen. But then entered our server Mckenzie. From the moment she came to the side of our table, she had the worst attitude of any server I've had in my 55 years on this planet. Folded arms and lifeless gaze towards the distance, she was disinterested in our table but nice enough... to start. We asked what she recommended. "Depends what you're in the mood for...", with an annoyed face. "Is there a red wine you can suggest?" "Just get the pinot", with a raised eyebrow. We got our order in without much trouble. The menu looked delicious. The first few dishes came out in reasonable time and the salads were very good. But she started removing plates literally while we were finishing our last bites. When a friend finished his glass of red wine, she swiftly took the glass without saying anything or asking if he'd like another. Then the pastas came out cold. In fact... the rest of the food was cold. When we tried to track her down to mention this, she was nowhere to be found. Not once did she check on us or ask how the food was. The only time she came by was to remove plates prematurely. A friend said overly nicely, 'not quite done yet :)' and she said 'Oh, going to lick the plate... ok'. It was service like what I imagine Dick's Last Resort is supposed to be like. So rude, we thought we were on hidden camera. We thought maybe she was having a bad day, which can happen. But she was hugging other diners and high five-ing other servers. The only thing colder than the food was the service. Another server brought out a dish and was nice / normal. But Mckenzie was bad enough to ruin the entire experience. She was a genuinely miserable human being and should not be in the service industry. We were at Enoteca the next night (highly recommend instead) and told everyone that would listen how awful the experience was with Mckenzie. We would go back to the Covey... after Mckenzie is gone. Until then, we can't possibly recommend this spot to anyone. Really bummed. read more

Crazy, but I looked at the prior reviews and found some inconsistent ratings. For me the service was excellent. I sat at the bar and Glen was a professional and attentive bartender. Winter salad was balanced and very well presented. The grilled trout could not have been better. Great plating and a wonderful mix of flavors. All in all, I strongly recommend The Covey. read more

Ambiance was great! Decor, atmosphere, staff, all friendly and welcoming and current. Food was innovative and hit the spot. Prices were a TAD high, but all was delicious. I would highly recommend this place for a special occasion or treat. Not priced for everyday but will be back the next time we're in town. We had the cauliflower, scallops and pork belly for starters. Hit the spot and all different. For mains we sampled pastas (a few were more aldente than our preference) but appreciated the fresh herbs an combinations of flavors. We had our wedding reception at the Covey in September 2023 and we could not have asked for a more perfect venue/dinner/night! Emily was incredible to work with as we planned the event months before. We worked with her and the Covey staff to choose a custom menu and signature drinks. On the wedding night the entire Covey restaurant and staff were amazing, super attentive and didn't miss a single detail. The wedding guests raved about the food and drinks, and the bar drinks were an absolute success!! They had a special menu for kids and when speeches rolled around they even pulled out an iPad for our 92 year old grandma to help her hear/see the speakers on the back patio. We are SO grateful to the Covey for helping make this the best night of our lives and would 1000/1000 recommend this venue if you have an upcoming event. Thanks Covey Team! Excellent in ambience, with fresh ingredients including their produce and homemade pasta. We cannot sing the praises of the Covey enough. We booked dinner reservations during the busy Trailing of the Sheep Festival weekend. While this cozy modern elegance meets farmhouse restaurant would have been an ultimate experience for a date night, our expectations were FAR exceeded with our family of four (including two younger children). We enjoyed the mafaldine, lamb cassarecce, and butterleaf dishes. They accommodated a delightful simple pasta for our youngest one, and encouraged them to create artwork while we waited for our meal. Their artwork was proudly framed and tastefully displayed on the wall by the bar. The evening ended with a delightful sweet surprise by the chef/owner and his dog. We will be back, with our family, friends, and for a date night! read more

We are out of town guest that have coming to visit SV locals for 20+ years. Our friends with us have been local for over 20+ years. First time we have had a bad invitation into a restaurant or establishment. We showed up for a Friday night cap, there were 20-30 people still in the restaurant and at the bar and the front manager/hostess said, "We are done serving and we are closed." It was a very uncomfortable experience and not inviting. The front hostess was not open to anyone else coming into the restaurant. We wanted a glass of wine and it was 9:15 on a Friday. If the restaurant was empty, it would have been easily been explained, but there were still numerous people in the restaurant/bar. We are sad and disappointed and we will not be going back to this restaurant. read more

Been coming here since it opened and remain a fan. Food is both creative and solid with seating choices at tables or at the bar. My favorite dish is the Rigatoni Bolognese. The bar is fun for a party of two. A major need was corrected this year by the Covey obtaining a liquor license which their cocktail list makes full use of. read more

Wha a totally disappointing dining experience at covey. We made a reservation for 4 making us pay $50 per person to reserve. We then tried to up to 5 people. We were then told we could not up to 5 top, although we didn't mind crowding. We were then told if we cancelled we would be charged $200. They said they had other people who would come but they sent them away. When we came to dinner our table would easily accommodate 5 people. There was another table across from us that was set for 5. No one came there for 35 minutes. Then when the people came to the other 5 top there were only 4 people. This is the most un-user friendly restaurant I have ever been at. And my family has owned restaurants. I was with a Sun Valley local who will never come back. We were so upset we had 3 beers and two appetizer dishes and left. Again. 5 people would have fit on our own 4-5 top. Management needs help in their CS. We were so upset we could not really evaluate the food we had. Never to return. My wife and our two friends have been vacationing at Sun Valley for the week; a truly breathtaking location, with mountain vistas and running rivers galore. Unfortunately, The Covey had us gasping for air with the most disturbing allocation of lemon flavored pasta this side of the Sawtooth mountains. The salad was fine, the cauliflower tasty. The shrimp was raw, slimey and irredeemably gnarly. But Lord above the buccatini tasted like the rotting carcass of a lemon flavored pasta dish. Surreptitiously short on saffron, short on pepper, short on physical pasta, with such a heavy sour lemon paste that my wife felt her stomach acid congealing after the second bite. Sad! The last time we had such a scandalously gross and underwhelming meal was at the Delta Lounge of the Atlanta airport - an incredibly disappointing experience. My wife is so distraught that she's leaving me and taking the kids. When life gives us lemons we make lemonaid; when The Covey gives you lemons, food poisoning and certain death soon follow. The buzz surrounding The Covey made me eager and excited to try the new Ketchum restaurant. That excitement was heightened as I entered the main dining room, a nicely appointed contemporary look with especially attractive lighting fixtures. The roaring fire in the open kitchen was the perfect accent to whet my appetite. But following this initial high, some observations and incidents started souring my view of the establishment. For starters one of our fellow diners noted that the two kitchen workers on the salad station were handling the food with bare ungloved hands. Nobody ordered a salad. We ordered a bottle of wine that the wine list indicated was a 2016. After an initial pour, we discovered it was a 2018. Being off by one year may well be a result of running out of the posted vintage. But a two year difference suggests a certain neglect or indifference in their wine service, especially disappointing for a restaurant that features triple digital wine prices. An appetizer special was described as featuring 'foie gras'. What came was pate of foie gras, a very different food item. Just as 'veal sausage' would not be suitable if the order was for 'veal', foie gras in pate form is a disappointment when the expectation is for the actual goose liver. And finally several in our party struggled reading the menu. It uses a poor font and too small a font size. The print seems to be produced to look like it was typed on an old Remington working with a too-often used typewriter ribbon with blotchy and fragmented lettering that further made reading the menu challenging. These nitpicks would have all faded to nothing had the quality of the food excelled. Unfortunately that would not be the case. Our group shared several appetizers and a pasta dish family style, so we each were able to sample the offerings. The roasted Cauliflower was adequate, but totally undistinguished with no hint of the promised berbere spice. The Hamachi Crudo was likewise nice, but the distant flavors of rhubarb and blood orange were not enough to raise the level of the dish much above that of a simple sashimi serving. My misgivings aside, the foie gras dish was tasty. The goose liver immersed in a very creamy pate. But what made this dish is the 'watermelon jam' that sat atop the toast point with a schmear of pate. The flavors combined for a very delightful taste sensation. We shared the Campanella pasta that included tomato water, stracciatella cheese and basil. The homemade pasta itself was very good. Trouble was the accompaniment. Despite its thin-sounding name, tomato water can be a luscious savory liquid. But not here. The dish was bland, the tomato water contributing little flavor to the dish. The basil was so scarce as to be unnoticed. The cheese, although quite tasty, was also apportioned less than generously. Among the entrees, a Whole Trout dish received good comments, but something less than raves. A special Octopus dish, served cold, was enjoyed by one diner. While another pasta dish proved to be a significant improvement from the Campanella. Amatriciana is a pasta sauce native to Rome and its province, Lazio. Having spent much time to Rome, I became very familiar with the pancetta-infused sauce and can attest to the authenticity in the version served at The Covey. It would rank above average among the versions sampled within the seven hills. The group consensus as we came away from the meal was general disappointment given the restaurant's very favorable reviews. Expectations may have been too high, but there was also consensus that the food quality, uneven but good at times, did not justify the elevated prices. No one sampled their ultra-premium dry-aged steaks, a couple of which command prices over $200. It may be in this segment that The Covey justifies its high regard among some diners. But I got little indication of this from their "Bavette" steak, a Hanger steak that was, like many of the other dishes, good but not distinguished. One final nitpick: The Covey requires a credit card to make a reservation. No problem there. But you are told there will be a $50 PER PERSON change if the reservation is cancelled "at the last minute". I inquired as to what constituted "last minute", but no one could give me an answer. In other words, it is discretionary. 1 hour? 3 hours? 6 hours? 24 hours? A definitive time should be provided in fairness to guests making reservations. read more

We went to Covey last night; we're already plotting our next date night and ready to head back for round 2. The ambiance is very cool and thoughtful. It's clear they really thought this place out. Cannot wait until the outdoor area is open in the summer. We tried a bunch of different beers, and dashed that with some amazing Sake. Drinks are 5 star. Time for the food: EPIC. They cook on a big open fire...we sat at the bar (really unique seats that fold out). Watched them make our meal which made the experience a lot of fun. The smell from the fire and the different foods simmering adds to the ambiance. The staff was really friendly, and the owner was right there with everyone...he even gave us a tour at the end. Long story short, you won't be disappointed. I predict big success for this new restaurant in Ketchum. Update: went back again with another couple, even better. read more

Favorite restaurant in Ketchum!!! We have come here many times over the years and have always had great service and amazing food. We even bring our young children and everyone is so kind. The owner, Jessie, has kids of his own and always makes our family feel welcomed. He even hung our daughters drawing in the restaurant for everyone to see! The drinks are always great (cocktails and wine) and the food NEVER disappoints. I am a big fan of their homemade pasta! Some people might not like a smaller menu, but we love it! The cauliflower app is amazing too. And the entrees are incredible. From the chicken to the trout, we have never had a bad meal here. They have a great outdoor space as well. read more

My wine pour was pathetic for $22. Got the worst spots at the bar and the bartender barely paid any attention to us. Service was disappointing. Sadly will not be back. If "doing their best" to be COVID safe means that NONE of their chiefs (in an open kitchen) wear masks or gloves, then their best was not for us. We walked out after watching one of their chiefs prepare at least 4 different meals, no mask, wipes nose, touches head (no net, hat or anything on there either), and never washed hands or used sanitizer. Confronted manager, all she said was, "we're trying", and "you have to understand it's hot in the kitchen". So if you concerned at all about COVID, I'd go somewhere else as this place does not seem to care. read more
