Our bathroom sink got gradually more clogged over the past few months, with Drano/Liquid Glug/an accordion plunger/zipit drain snakes no longer helping at all. At this point, the sink would fill up and take an hour or two to drain fully, so it was effectively unusable. I messaged Pipe Monkeys, the owner got back to me very quickly, and I called and scheduled an appointment for the next day. They sent out a plumber who arrived on time (especially impressive given there was no parking for several blocks near my building), took a look at the sink, did some tests, and had it snaked and completely fixed within maybe 30 minutes or so. He also explained if that snaking hadn't worked, other tools and options he was ready to use to get the clog fixed. The total cost was $175 + tax. That was a pleasant change from quotes from other plumbing options near me ($200-$350) who had way fewer reviews on yelp and way lower ratings. When anything pipe related happens to you, panic can set in. I trusted the Yelp reviews, and boy I'm glad I did. I was able to book something late at night and have someone from these lifesavers come by noon the next day. They let me know the window they'd be arriving at, texted me to let me know they were on their way and once here, proceeded to identify and fix the problem quickly. Highly recommended. Never thought I could say that a company could treat you like family, but that's what Kirk did. Went out of his way to take care of a clogged drain that flooded my elderly parents' home. The flood knocked out the pilot light on my parents' water heater and he came back to troubleshoot it. He was honest enough to let me know that it was a job for a licensed plumber and he referred me to his friend Peter (licensed master plumber-separate review) and followed up with him to make sure I was taken care of. Life is full of surprises, some of them unpleasant. So it was when one day recently, my toilet began to leak from the base when I flushed. This was very bad. Of course, my landlord was useless, but thankfully these folks were not. Kirk was able to get over quickly and make short work of replacing the wax seal which caused the issue despite the fact that the valve was not working, which meant he was in a race against time essentially. I called Pipe Monkeys after reading all the positive reviews here. I was greeted by a very friendly person and was told they would be able to stop by later in the day. A few hours later, I got a call from Kirk letting me know he was on his way. He inspected the issue, told me what he thought was the problem and gave me a price and how long it would take. Not 15 minutes later, he had cleared out the drain backup. He also gave me advice on the things I can do to keep it unclogged. OMG! Kirk D. is the best professional plumber that I ever used. I needed to replace my old toilet. He gave me a very reasonable estimate for job. I had water pouring down from a pipe in my basement, the flooding was intense and I was pretty darn panicked when I looked for a good review for a plumber on Yelp and found Pipe Monkeys. Kirk called me back immediately, came as soon as he could and was here within an hour helping out. After figuring it out that it was a city sewer problem he went ahead and snaked out my pipes and found some other issues he said I could have my regular plumber come and fix, which I will. Kirk is intelligent, polite, together and gets the job done as well as gives you free advice on other things you can do to help the plumbing long-term. The Pipe Monkeys team was great from start to finish. First, they responded to my message right away with an accurate quote, and they gave me an appointment for the next morning (it wasn't an emergency issue, so that was fine). The next day, Kirk kept me informed about his arrival time; when he did get to my apartment, he was helpful and informative. He quickly figured out the source of the leak, went back out to buy some needed parts, and returned promptly to finish fixing it. There were multiple payment options, and paying was easy. In spite of the mixed reviews I decided to try Pipe Monkeys, which may be why my results, understandably, are also mixed. On the plus side Kirk was personable enough, diligent and punctual. I had two items that needed to be addressed, both in the tenants bathroom in the apt of my mom's house. The main one was a leak which I assumed was from a worn rubber washer on the valve. The other was a slow drain on the tub. When he came he started on the leak but after changing the washers the leak continued and he said he couldn't fix it because the valve itself was worn and so the whole system would need to be changed. He explained what it would require and the estimate of how much it would cost and then gave his suggestions of what he thought should be done. He then snaked the tub being careful to give the disclaimer that if they were old pipes they may break but that he would be careful. Luckily and due to his care the pipes did not break and he was successful. So Kirk was able to improve the flow and the tenants have since reported that there was a noticeable difference. So very pleased w/the work. The complaint I would have is w/his pricing. I contacted Kirk a week before and he said he would look @ it and made an appt. The day before he came he called to verify the appt and to give me a quote. He said he'd have to see about the leak but it would probably be about $250-$300. When I asked him if this just for the leak he said that that was the price for both. The price for unstopping the drain was $175 but if he was also able to stop the leak then it would then be around $250-$300. This seemed reasonable. I also asked what manner of payment he accepted; he said cash, check or credit card. I also asked if he provided a receipt (which I need to file for taxes) to which he answered: 'of course!" When he finished the job I told my mom, who had said beforehand that she wanted to pay by check. I told Kirk and he said that actually w/first-time customers he preferred a credit card. He then said it would be $299. In the confusion and since my mom who is 97 wasn't understanding the situation she handed over her credit card and Kirk processed the payment. It was later when I was reading my notes did I realize that he had said the price to snake the drain was $175 but IF he also fixed the leak it would be $275-$300. So I'm not sure if there was a misunderstanding. Or if he ultimately thought the replacing of the washers (which I provided) warranted the full price; or if he suddenly raised his price for the snaking. but for this reason I believe his prices were not reasonable. It reinforces the fear of getting workers like plumbers and the reason why many people hesitate: because not only is it expensive but then the problem isn't solved anyway. It doesn't help either that workers are hesitant to to give you an estimate. The whole system of comparing quotes is an illusion since when Yelp submitted the job for quotes not one of 8 companies responded w/a quote. So for what it's worth Pipe Monkeys does do professional successful work but there can be problems w/the pricing. read more
