I ran up to Hayward for the day Wednesday, arriving @ The Angry Minnow @ 11a open. It was a perfect weather day for this cute brewery w their big garage door open. I was cheerily greeted @ my 390th brewery by friendly April! We discussed the tap list and I began mentally building a flight. Decided to forego a $16 six pour flight for buying some tasters individually & just diving right in to a few goblet pours. Angry Minnow did not disappoint. This may be brewer Jason's first brewery gig since his Great Dane apprenticeship but...he is Dialed In! I told April and Taryn "each beer just keeps getting better!" There were three IPA's on tap and they said the Citra was the least piny/bitter, so I went w a sample of that. So well balanced, delicious. The Hazy was no slouch. zi started my beery voyage w a McStukie's Scotch Ale. I then moved around to a Tequila Saison Chardonnay Blonde Oakys Oatmeal Stout & a 9-Toe Doppelbock before wrapping up with a 5oz pour of Hazy. I was so busy chatting up customers and Taryn I completely forgot to ask about how the beers got their names? I guess a job for my second visit..... I love the brick walled tap room, the spacious tables and the variety of merch. Free street parking is easy. I opted not to eat but the small menu looked to quench any palate and it was good offerings, not just a burger or side salad. It's no wonder The Angry Minnow has been around since 2004!! They have all the offerings, including knowledgeable and friendly staff to slang it all. Thanks Angry Minnow for a fantastically delicious Wednesday morning stop. NIce little brewery on Mainstreet Hayward. Open and airy, it is a nice place to hang out post ride. I enjoyed all the beers I sampled, particularly the Scottish Ale and the Saison. Both excellent examples of those styles. The biggest disappointment was that there was NO FOOD available despite a sign outside that said small plates. It may have been just that weekend but they really need something to balance the alcohol, even if it is just packaged pretzels or chip. read more

Somewhat disappointed.... This came recommended based on the old location. Beer was okay but would've been nice to have some Sours. Food was okay but limited, and parking was also a bit of a challenge. Beer again was pretty good although because of some of the other things listed not sure if I would make an effort to go back. read more

I understand they have closed the 1889 old lumber office building and opened in the old Pavillion spot on Main just north of Angler's. A local told me they have no food service as of yet, but I have not gone in this new location yet. It's a shame they closed that old historic building, I'm thinking they still make the beer there tho. read more

Stopped in for a drink on our quick trip to Hayward - staff was very friendly and let us sample some beers. They have some unique choices that were fun to try and we enjoyed the Oktoberfest and Tequila Barrel Saison. Love the open air feel of the inside with the garage door open. Friendly bartender and good service. We couldn't figure out what the decorative paddle on the wall was for, it had two large gaping hole in the center. Pizza paddle? The menu was very small. The tacos were pretty good, we had the pork and the whitefish. The beer was of course great. I had a jalapeño margarita, and wish I would have just stuck with the beer. The pretzels were pretty good as well. The nachos were absolutely embarrassing. It was the bottom of a bag of chips with a tiny bit of barely melted cheese on it... most chips were just plain. The chicken, beans and peppers were like a needle in a haystack: you were lucky if you found one morsel every 10 bites or so. Just don't get them. We were there from 3:30-4:30pm on a Friday during the Muskie Festival. Read reviews and hubby started with a Big Brook IPA. He gave it a 3/4 for an IPA. I ordered the stuffed Gouda Cheese pretzel. Eh...... it was a 6 inch hand rolled flat, pale pretzel for 3 bucks. It was just " ok" and disappointed in its looks and taste. Came with 2 mustards. Hubby ordered the Korean Burger with kim chew on it. He said the Kim Chee was more like sour kraut and not any heat to it. No fries..... only choice of chips or a quinoa salad. He got the chips..... I myself ordered the whitefish that was pan fried. It came on a small plate covered in spinach, a very small portion of delicious fried rice( like maybe 2 tablespoons worth, 2 pan fried white fish and topped with a flavorless Apple cucumber salsa. It was messy to eat because of small plate. The whitefish was mostly bruised dark meat that tasted bland. My husband ate most of my plate. I suggested to server( who was super sweet and professional) to offer a bowl of that fried rice with a soft cooked egg on top..... Now that I would love! There's nothing to be angry about here. Great brews and pretzels filled with flavor. For happy hour, the staff is always welcoming and there's usually a seat or few open. We've been here multiple times for the mid-afternoon, pre-dinner snack which also coincides with 'Angry Hour.' For my money, B*tch Hill Belgian style is the seasonal beer of choice. It's just as easy going down as the real hill itself, but there's plenty of other fresh brewed options for the palate too! As for those pretzels, just get the Triple Stuffed. Cheese and peppers in rolled dough for salty perfection to compliment your pint. Now, these pretzels don't look familiar, but just look the other way and let your mouth decide. There's not many casual restaurant offerings in Hayward, let alone brew pubs, but regardless, Angry Minnow is definitely a big fish in any pond. read more

I don't know much about minnows, but I do know this place made me ANGRY. Here's how it went down.... We arrived and perused their rather small menu, which has changed somewhat recently. They describe it as "up-north eclectic" so hopefully you like the offering EXACTLY AS IT'S WRITTEN on the menu. Me, to Server: "I'd like the Tearjerker Burger, but without the chipotle mayo please" Server (rather rudely): "No!" Me: "I'm sorry, what?" Server: "no, you can't omit the mayo. You can't change anything on the menu AT ALL - you can't add anything or leave anything off" Me: speechless. Completely speechless - both at the pompous attitude of this place, and the rudeness of the server. Me: (thinking but not saying) Are you SHITTING me? Jesus Christ, I'm not asking your "chef" to compromise his artistic vision of what this BURGER should be, I just don't want it slathered in gross mayo.... Me: "I'll have a bowl of soup" What we ended up ordering was "edible", our service was slow and borderline rude and the whole experience ensured I'll never make this place a stop again. I was hopeful that it was a fluke, but another family member stopped during the week and they refused to make his burger well done - only medium. I'm generally easy to please, and I don't believe in excessive modifications to menu items, but I do think it's unreasonable for Angry Minnow not to accommodate a simple request. read more

The Angry Minnow is one of my favorite spots in Hayward. The building is old (built in 1889) and has a beautiful interior. I love the archway over the bar and the exposed brick. Of all the times I've visited here, we were always seated immediately and had wonderful servers. The food is good, the beer delicious, and the atmosphere is casual and relaxing. I've had nearly everything on their menu (or so it feels like), so here's the run down on some of their dishes: The Angry Pretzels appetizer is really good. You get three dipping sauces: jalapeno cheese, mustard, and wasabi. You can order one pretzel or three, but trust me, you'll want more than one. Spin Dip is AM's take on spinach and artichoke dip. Theirs is loaded with the pepper jack cheese, cream cheese, and of course spinach and artichokes. You get toasted pitas to dip in the cheesy goodness. Rice & Beans is probably my favorite "small plate." Despite being in the small plate category, this lil' guy will certainly fill you up, especially after a few brews! Quinoa, chili orzo, red pepper, onion, jalapeno, and chili spice make this dish a fiery delight. I've had it as is, but you can add chicken for an additional two bucks, which is equally as delicious. The tacos: Pork, Chicken, Fish or Veg Oh my word, they are FILLING! I could have done with just one, but I assumed they'd be on the smaller side. You get a choice of chicken, fish, pork, or veggie style, and they're topped with a spicy jalapeno slaw and mango avocado salsa. You can choose either flour or corn tortilla. I tried both chicken and pork; the chicken was better as my pork had a lot of fat :/ The Surley sandwich is really good. At first glance it seems to be on the small side, but as you near the end, you'll realize just how full you are. The Surley has shredded chicken, pepper jack cheese, jalapenos, onion, lettuce, tomato, and wasabi. Mine was served with a side of kettle cooked chips (I wasn't given other options). I only tried a few of their beers; the Minnow Lite (yeah, it's like Miller Lite) and the River Pig ale, which was a fabulous thirst quencher on a hot summer day. I've also had their Bloody Mary's, which are extremely tasty. The only downside is they don't have straws, which is irritating because I like to enjoy my Bloody's with a straw. Oh well. I look forward to returning next summer. My only suggestions would be to get straws for your drinks and expand the menu a bit. read more

The beer is okay, and given there isn't much in terms of tap selection anywhere else in town, its fun to go someplace with a variety of unique options, but there are more misses than hits. But I found the food to be great, some of the best around (which isn't actually too great of a compliment) especially the Brussels sprout appetizer we had - wonderful. The service is bad - I suppose serving tourists all summer can be a drag, but we pay your bills gosh darn it, how about being nice? We vacation in Hayward, so I know I will be back here - I hope the experience improves. read more

I'm a traveler for work and eat out a lot. This place has amazing beers and the food was excellent. Wife had the Turkey Flatbread and I had the Angry Korean (burger with kimchee). Been to the Angry Minnow a few times now (once on Birkie weekend, again today) so thought I'd comment. Took the family for lunch and it was nice out so we sat in the Bier Garden. It was good, could use ambiance like music, plants, flowers or something. Still it was nice to have a shaded outdoor seating area so we were happy. The service was good. Waitress was helpful and knowledgable. Mentioned the kids menu that was not included in the printed menu. She brought drinks quickly and was prompt to check up and bringing the check. Food was good, beer was great. Wife ordered mushroom swiss burger and the cook hit the "well done" request on the button. My cheese steak was a bit on the spicy side, wasn't expecting that. The beers were spectacular - both the Belgian Blonde and the IPA. Kudos to the brewmaster. Overall, a good experience. I'd enhance the menu a bit and maybe the outdoor ambiance but we enjoyed it. read more

Great microbrewery / pub in a classic, high ceilinged brick building. Every time we come up to the lake with our family, we get away for a date night at the minnow - definitely worth the 30 minute drive. If the weather cooperates, the back patio is lovely; if you need A/C or shelter the cool brick interior, central bar, and woodwork make for a country pub that wouldn't be out of place in the UK. They've also got a (small) selection of excellent whiskys - whisky drinkers will easily find several quality choices to sip. But TBH the food isn't the draw. It's fine, but you're probably coming here for the beer and setting. read more

I had high expectations going into this place and it was just ok. We had the cheese curds and sweet potato fries to start which were good. I had the AM burger and it was really just OK. The burger was cooked well done, not medium like I had ordered, and it had been sitting a while because the yoke was not running and soft underneath. This was partially because our server outside was also cock-tailing in the bar.. so I believe it would have been better had it not rested so long. Overall, great ambiance and ok food.
