That's my only gripe though...the food is fresh and the service is good. Stopped in 40 minutes before close and they seemed to be wrapping up for the night. Sadly, they meant it would be a 15 minute wait for the chicken kabob. Opted for the chicken shawarma which was well cooked and quite tasty. The chicken was piled high on a bed of lettuce and I had cucumber sauce on top. You get two sides with the platter and there's some unique options to compliment your typical choices. The avocado hummus is a nice consistency and a good balance for the shawarma. I really wanted pickles, but likely wouldn't order them as an entire side. read more

Falafel balls are fragrant with spices, crunchy on the outside, and steamy and soft on the inside. Every bite brings out something new in your food. These guys make excellent hummus. It's silky smooth with a creamy taste. Another neat bonus is that they have all kinds of non alcoholic beverages in the cooler for you to try with your meal. These aren't your typical American soda. They're imported, and come in little glass bottles. I tried the apple soda, and it was delightful. The shwarma chicken is my favorite, its moist, well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The rice and sides are also made well, that enhances the overall taste of the platter. The store is little messy but in general service is fast. Big benched are available for group sittings. This is my go to for Halal food in Newark. I can always expct great flavored food. I have yet to be disappointed with their food. I've tried their platters. You can choose from the kofta kabab, Chicken kabab, Meat shawarma, or Chicken shawarma. The platters are served with salad and either rice or french fries. My favorite is the chicken shawarma. The meat is perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. The salad is always fresh. I've also had their lamb gyro which is delicious. As sides, I've tried their falafels, regular hummus, Kibbeh, Babaghanouj, Mozzarella Sticks, and Hot Wings. My favorite sides are the babaghanouj and falafel. Love this joint! So, i don't know what's going on in the Halsey street area but this is like the third pita spot that has opened. This one is really good. Large portions for a low price. I got beef sharwma with a salad and babagonush with half a pita for $10. Not bad at all. Very flavorful and the people are super nice. There's not much seating so I got it to go but I've sat in there before with a friend with no issues. I've watched people try to get seats so don't get it twisted, it's definitely limited. Must try! All the food was hot and perfectly cooked , it's also a massive portion. The hummus is absolutely fantastic. I will be staying in the area again just so I can order this while traveling. It started off bad due to Yelp's incorrect hours, but fortunately the owner was across the street. He noticed I was frustrated, questioned why and explained that the hours on Yelp stated you do not close until 10, and it was only 8 pm. He explained that he had his IT correct the hours online, but Yelp did not update. He told me had another customer complaining about the hours, but he wasn't sure where they found them. He didn't realize it was Yelp that still had the wrong hours. They had cleaned up, and were ready to go home. I have tried most of the menu offerings at Pita Square and have yet to find something not to like. The food tastes really fresh, light, and their flavors are spot on. My favorite selections are the baba ganoush, hummus, kibbeh, chicken shawarma, and the tabouli salad. I find the ingredients to be of high quality and the food well prepared. This place is great! I'll start by saying I used to love Halal Guys (the OG cart in the city on 6th and 53rd). I was also equally excited when all the locations started to open up. But, sadly, the quality has gone down. With the proximity, and the similarities in food (even though they are different) I'll always pick this over Halal Guys. The falafel was amazing. It was fried to perfection, yet not dry on the inside - as falafel usually is. The chicken shawarma sandwich was excellent as well too. I originally thought the mint lemonade was overpriced. However, I'm almost positive they muddled the mint right after we ordered it. The wait was well worth it. The only reason I dont give 5 stars is because Shawarma/Mediterranean middle eastern is probably my favorite and I'll naturally compare to others. Still, I will be back frequently. read more

I went here for lunch with my coworker the opening week, got a meat shawarma platter on salad. Food was fresh and tasteful. This is a good option if you work in Downtown Newark and want a filling meal that's not TOO heavy. I liked how the menu was easy to understand and there were lots of options for assembling your platter (but not an overwhelming amount of choice, the right amount). I also liked that there was booth seating so you can sit with your coworkers or friends comfortably. The workers were courteous and polite and respectful, and the manager was quite kind to give a free dessert on the house. It's true that the assembly line team was still getting the right feel of working together and they were sometimes bumping into each other. But I think it is because the place just opened up. The cashier was very patient with me and answered all my questions. He even let me try the toppings before i selected as one of my toppings. For me, Pita Square beats Halal Guys and Green Chickpea (both of which I really like). I find the price to be better at Pita Square and the food a bit fresher and a more generous portion. More limited menu, but that's fine by me (the variety of toppings at Green Chickpea can make my head spin - but less choice might be a negative for some people). What really puts this place far and away over the top for me is the freshness of the pita bread. I would not be surprised to learn that it is baked on premises.
