We ordered one small and one large platter, but the large platter had about the same amount of food as a small platter. I tried the new honey siracha falafel and they were pretty tasty just a little salty. Overall I would definitely try again but I feel like when you go in person you get more food. I'm reminder of the adage around Sylvia's Restaurant in Harlem when it comes to this chain. 'Once they put it on the shelves, it's not the same'. Now I know standing on the line on 53rd St is what gave this food it's flavor yet it really is not the same from the street vendor experience. It seems the spices are less - I am used to the aroma being the draw. I had rice and falafel, it was extra crispy as though the technique has been changed. I did not eat all of them. The chicken over rice is about $16 which is significantly more expensive than the carts in the neighborhood. Food quality is just on par with street carts and customer service is quick and friendly. Halal Guys is definitely a name i've always heard, but never visited! Since I was in the area I decided to try their limited time meatless options. I placed my order for pickup online in which I received an email and a text. I could even track my order which was cool. Once I received the text that it was ready, I walked in for pick up. The guy let me know that my order was not ready yet which was a bit annoying but I waited 10 more minutes. I decided to order the meatless gyro and eggplant hummus which came with pita chips. When I got home, I immediately told myself I should've checked my order. The order was right, but my gyro did not come with the white sauce in which the description says it would. To get packets of the white sauce was almost a dollar so I just thought it being drizzled on top would do. Nope, my gyro was dry and unflavored. It was literally lettuce, tomatoes and the meatless meat stuffed in a pita bread. I definitely think the white sauce would've made the gyro bearable. I also did not like the meatless meat but again, maybe I would've if I had sauce. The eggplant hummus was bland to me and the pita chips tasted stale. This Halal Guys location is pretty solid. I've ordered eat-in, take-out, and delivery courtesy of Uber Eats. The food has always been fresh and hasn't been sitting there for a while on the grill. If you eat-in, people will walk around and ask if you want more bbq or white sauce. The inside of the place is also always clean and tables wiped down. Take out and delivery are good. I think I only had one issue where they messed up my drink (I wanted a bottle instead of fountain), but that was it. Today is 10/2/19, so we have at least a couple of weeks left to use it. Cashier gave me an extremely hard time, stating that the promotion had ended. A lot of back and forth ensued. Strike one. As I was getting ready to walk out, she said she would give me the discount. I gave her my card. My mistake is that I actually believed her. Strike Two. I fell in love with Halal Guys many years ago for the same reason as everyone else: it was cheap and delicious. I only been to the original location in NYC and never tried the restuarant version. The primary difference between this restuarant and food cart in NYC is the veggies. You get diced tomatoes, onions, and peppers with your platter while the food cart only has lettuce. While the staffs here are friendly and helpful, two less stars for the price. $10.18 after tax for a combo platter is steep. I believe the food court in NYC is currently $9. Also I did not like that I have to pay additional for the sauce packet. The staff pours the white sauce and hot sauce on your food. So if you're eating in and you feel you want more sauce, you can easily ask for more. But if you take out and you get home and feel you want more sauce, you're screwed. Unless you pay additional money for the sauce packet. I also felt the portion was smaller compared to the food cart location. Some of space is taken by the lettuces and tomatoes. This would not be my go to place. It's more a splurge. I don't know. First, I don't live near any Halal Guys, so I usually pick up 3 or 4 trays to take home at a time when I pass by one. They say their carts on street corners are better down in NYC but I'd prefer eating while not standing. Plus it's 10 degrees out! I ordered 5 gyros: 2 regular beef, 1 regular beef PLUS extra beef, and 2 regular chicken. $51.00 later through UBER Eats, I was left unsatisfied. My beef gyro with extra beef came in really greasy; the pita bread couldn't even hold the beef since the bread was so greasy it tore apart, but I was fine with that. Their gyro was just seasoned ground beef and I was looking for the traditional sliced beef with a mixture of lamb meat, which wasn't an option. How is this a gyro place without this kind of meat? I wanted to give this place another try after the first fail and I really should have stayed away. The staff is nice quick and efficient but the food just isn't good. I tried the lamb gyro. The meat is shreds which should have been the first sign. Then it was dry and fatty if that's even possible. It also had this after taste that I couldn't get pass. I like a lot of white sauce and would have liked a packet but that was an extra $1.00 on top of the $10.95 sandwich. So I had them go heavy on the sauce. I also got some hot sauce. Thank goodness the worker warned me that it was super hot. I only got drops and sure I will regret it later when I use the restroom. I love halal food and have had some GREAT lamb gyros. If you know the food truck in NYC they were always known for their "bright" yellow bags. And that's the main color you see inside with a touch of red. The wall decor was cute and the inside was pretty clean. Not so big...they had about 6 small tables to sit at. The line literally takes up the entire restaurant but they are pretty quick. Downside for me was seeing all that meat on the grill just stacked up ready to cook. I wasn't sure if that was safe. I mean the food was great .. White sauce on point... But I feel the food trucks were a lot more generous....yah I'm being greedy hee hee. Delicious food at every location. This is the first time I've been to the Halal guys in newark. I usually go to the Manhattan locations because I'm just cool like that. I was skeptical of coming here since I've heard story of the long lines at the cashier. A friend of mine called to see if they deliver, they don't. Anyone who knows halal guys, knows the white sauce makes all their dishes....I ordered a mixed chicken and lamb gyro sandwich (in the pita) and a small lamb platter. I paid for extra olives and got them. But no sauce...when I called the store, they blamed seamless and the driver. When I called the driver, he blamed the store and said he was on Another delivery. Frustrating!! Especially after paying delivery fees and a generous tip.... All in all I WALKED about 10-12 mins to the restaurant and asked for the sauces. The manager was nice and gave me the sauces. After all of this, I came back home to a cold, chewy, gummy pita wrap that I had to turn into a impromptu gyro salad by adding some spring mix lettuce.
