Great warm hospitality is at the Turkish Pita Place. LOVE their Turkish Coffee with one of their delicious baklava or Morsel Fritters. The coffee is served in a very pretty demitasse cup. A very nice buffet is available with a variety of Turkish foods. Of course, you have to try the excellent Hummus. So far, my favorite item is the fresh Lamb Kebab. The Turkish Pita Place is located at 160 Halsey St. in downtown Newark. Street parking is not the best in this area. Parking lots are available, but are pricey. read more

Turkish Pita Place is a quiet buffet restaurant on Halsey St., next to the dunkin donuts. It is definitely family owned, the 2 people who work there seem like brother and sister. They are really cool and make you feel at home. If you order something that they have to make, then you just sit down and they'll bring the food to you, and you don't have to pay until you're done eating. I really appreciate it when restaurants do this, and trust you to pay them after you're done instead of making you walk back up to the counter while your food gets cold. It gives a much friendlier vibe to the restaurant since they trust you enough. I like that it's also fairly quiet, like if you want to just chill out during lunch or have a conversation with someone without the loud hustle and bustle of most other lunch places. I've tried most of the items on their menu as this was my favorite place when I first started at my job, but the lamb kebab platter is my favorite. I've also had the gyro combo platter and chicken kebab. Do yourself a favor though and as a dessert, you must try out the baklava! It's a really sweet, rich, pastry that has an interesting texture in that it's not completely solid and it really melts in your mouth. Love this place. read more

This spot is across the street from my office. My coworker swears by it so I decided to give it a try. Once, I ordered from the grill. I got a chicken steak sandwich. Chicken steak is basically chicken kebab in a pita with cucumber salad. It was delicious! They offer you white sauce along with there special hot sauce. I wish the house sauce had more spice, it taste more tomatoes with pepper than hot sauce. Since, my first visit was a success, I decided to try the hot buffet on my second visit. This visit wasn"t successful. The food was cold. I hate cold lamb and since I got a cold salad with it, I couldnt heat it up in my office microwave. Using the remaining minutes of my lunch break, I feel compelled to review Turkish Pita Place because I had such a good experience today. I randomly decided to go to Downtown Newark for lunch and stop in here. I'm really glad I found this place! Going out to lunch during the work week can be difficult when you are pressed for time. When you feel rushed and you have to scarf down your food in order to get back and punch-in on time, it sometimes is not worth leaving the office. But I thought the service here was fast and the staff were very efficient and friendly. The spot is set up so you clearly can tell where to order and where to pick up. It can be aggravating going to places where you and other customers just stand there, wondering, "Uh, so how do we do this?" (Believe me, there are establishments like this downtown). This place has good amount of seating and, when you dine in, the staff bring your order to you on these huge trays. Real plates and silverware. Plus, a selection of Turkish goods are on display for sale (you know, like cookies or sweets to bring back to your desk - just saying). It's a nice little lunch spot. I got the chicken gyro platter, which came with red and white rice, salad, a piece of pita, and a cup of rice pudding with cinnamon. Food was good and I ordered kababs. I know this is more particular but I do have to suggest that they get some larger plastic ware to eat when you dine in. Silverware would also be a plus and i say this since it really made it difficult to enjoy the food eating with a doll house fork. Seriously and I provided this suggestion. Restaurant is clean but they also need to think about air conditioning in the summer months. The other day the restaurant had to be 90 plus degrees which also makes eating in unpleasant Otherwise, good place but for reasons above I might have to only consider take out. Great place! We happened to find it while being on our way to the airport. Coming from a mix of Turkish and Israeli families, we are hard to impress when it comes to Mediterranean food. In this case, the food was beyond good. Everything we tried on the menu, from the salads to desserts, was amazing. Service was great too. Though it is on a popular food block, I dont know why I never have seen it before until a Vegan colleague suggested us to go there on Friday. OMG, I loved it. Things I can't pronounce? Sure why not. +` Mediterranean Salad - 4/5 - Chunks of tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, and what not... fresh and tasty, but this desperately needed some richness and maybe some fat. I think adding Olives and Feta cheese would have done the job. +` Combo (Beef + Chicken) Gyro - 4/5 - Although this tasted a little different from what I'm used to, the gyro was still good. The meat was delicious, but I think the sandwich, like the salad, could have used a little more richness in the form of cheese or a richer tzatziki sauce. The tzatziki was given as a side to pour on the gyro, but it was a little more soupy than saucy. Note* The gyro came with a side of rice and and rice pudding dessert--both were decent. read more

Came here for lunch with some colleagues. Got the chicken gyro pita sandwich which came with choice of rice or french fries . Of course I went with the fries . The fries were crispy and good but didn't have much taste to it . The gyro was good , filled with A LOT of meat but the meat wasn't seasoned that well , so you need to add sauce to it . They have tzatziki sauce but it's a bit watered down it needs more yogurt in it. read more

I reviewed this place previously before it was Turkish food and was mostly Arab food. It was good then -- it is EXCELLENT now. Friendly family-owned establishment that is FRESH, healthy, extremely tasty and has WIDE variety for very good price points... Their buffets have at lest 15 items to choose from for those curious to try new things.... I have tried ALL and each is as tast as the next- it's just what you're feeling up to that day... I am ALWAYS a fan of their lentil soup. The young man behind the counter is very nice, and remembers customers from what they regularly order. Downtown Newark NJ needs restaurants. This is obvious. We all go to the same places over and over. There is no complexity or diversity. But we all still pay NYC prices. Enter Pita Place. Pita Place is another middle eastern restaurant located in in Downtown Newark. The food is pretty good. The Falafel is freshly fried and from what I understand the lamb is good. They never have shakshouka but I can forgive that. They also dont have any good sides for the sandwiches like a cheap soda or a bag of cheap chips, harder to forgive. But the main foods are cheap. I can say compared to GRILL you will be getting a deal. It appears they don't use a chickpea falafel mix instead going for the darker fava bean. Still pretty good though. I would suggest seeking your drinks and chips elsewhere. So if you need a change-up pitch during lunch and dont know where to go... Please check these guys out. read more

It's one of our go-to places when my co-workers and I are in the area. It's close to the court house, NJIT, Rutgers and the old Bamberger building, which was at once a Macy's. I get told stories of how this area of Newark was the place to be back in the early to mid 1900s. You can still see the older buildings around the area and a lot of new developments within a few blocks, which tells me that this area is going to grow. Back to the Turkish Pita Place. It's got seating for about 20-30 people, there's sample pictures of the different plates/dishes , so it's easy to choose what you want. The tadzhik is a little watery than the greek type I'm used to. Parking sucks, but it's easy to locate, all you need to do is find the Prudential building and go behind it. read more

Very good Turkish Family Owned Restaurant. Very friendly workers. Ayesha was so friendly and helpful. I had lamb and Beef Adana Kabab it was juicy and well cooked and so tasty, it came with White rice, pita and salad. Good quantity too, we also ordered chicken gyros wrap and it was delicious and came with fries. I also tried the Turkish tea with lemon it was nice too. So overall satisfaction of food and the money spent. I would recommend this place for lunch specials or dinners. The location is wonderful close to broad st and Hasley. This is probably the best food you can get near the University area of newark. Everything I have tried so far was amazing. The hummus is not as good as I would like it to be, it is kind of garlicky and hard on my tongue. The Adana is AMAZING. The staff is so nice, they give me free stuff every single time I come in. This is my second visit to this establishment and I regret giving them another chance. I love lamb gyros and great tzatziki sauce..I will never go back again. I love a good Lamb Gyro and this 1 was the worst I have ever had. I don't know because it wasn't lunch time or their peak time frames but the meat was soooo dry and I didn't want rice or french fries so I asked for more meat and tomatoes not knowing I was going to receive dry lamb...( which by the way did not taste like lamb at all.) My coworkers and I placed a delivery order and I'm glad we did. I had the eggplant appetizer (with the sauce) and a greek salad with feta and both were delicious (I wanted to try more offerings, but I was trying to keep my lunch light). Delivery was slowish, (It took over an hour and the delivery guy got lost) but I still glad that they offer the service, as they are downtown and my office is University Heights. Came here with the with the family. The service was friendly and helpful but we found the food extremely bland. I had food from the buffet and everything was tasteless from the baba ganoush to the meatballs and everything in between. My son loves bulgur but it too was dry and tasteless. I had a craving for kebabs and knew I had to check this place out, since it was a block away from where I work. All I can say is no regrets! I ordered the lamb kebab platter to go; as I always have a tendency to order lamb platters when I am settling for Middle Eastern cuisine, because they do it best. The woman behind the counter told me to have a seat while I waited for my order. She was very sweet and friendly, which is a huge plus for me. The food took about 10 minutes to prepare; no big deal, I'm a fan of fresh food. While sitting in the restaurant I noticed how clean it was compared to other establishments in the area, from the tables to the floor to the buffet stand; that alone is worth the five stars. Also, I enjoyed the Arabic music playing in the back. When my order was ready, she called me up to pay and I saw the mouthwatering baklava in the dessert case staring back at me, so I ordered one but couldn't choose between the pistachio or walnut. The woman didn't hesitate in letting me try both; one free of charge. Free food is always a good thing in my book! Overall, this place is great! The lamb and beef gyro was awful. They sliced off the burned up part of the gyro meat rottisserie and put it in my sandwich. It was terrible. The chicken gyro was not too bad. The lentil soup had a weird flavor to it. I will give them break on that because maybe it is just a soup spice that I am not use to. I have had $5 gyros that are 10x better.
