Man this food is good. Parking is extremely limited so I would suggest parking on Messer St and walking the few meters down to the corner. Very flavorful rice and beans, very flavorful pepper steak. The rice and beans are even more flavorful than you could imagine (the yellow rice particularly) I've seen a few notes mentioning that they've had some unfriendly service here. Never the case for me. You dont need to speak Spanish but knowing a few simple phrases helps beyond just pointing (arroz y habichuelas, bistek con pepino, y ensalada con vinagre). But you can point too. That's my go too meal of rice and beans, pepper steak and a small side salad. They take cash only otherwise, I'd be at 5 stars. The portions are huuuuuuuge. There's a constant flow of patrons all day long and the service is pretty quick. The food might be good here, but the way they treat customers is atrocious. I went in with a Restaurant.com certificate that I had bought for Pito's restaurant (499 Cranston St). When I told them about my certificate, the two ladies behind the counter told me they did not know anything about it... They basically told me.."Anyone can print something like that from the internet"....."That certificate is NOT REAL"........ "We don't know anything about that".... How embarrassing that was....every table was looking at me like if I was some sort of a scammer. They could have very easily called the owner and asked about this "new" certificate that someone brought....to find out how that worked... But they didn't. They chose to undermine people and show their prepotence on their customer. Very sad. Very poor customer service. read more

We came to Pito's after having gone to La Gran Parada. I figured I'd try it since Yelp reviewers were comparing them. I liked them both. I thought the food was comparable. The main differences were; 1. While they are both cafeteria style, Pito's is a lot less crowded (mainly because they are a lot faster) 2. La Gran Parada has been remodeled and has a nice and big dining room. Pito's is more like a shabby little pizza joint 3. Pito's is cheaper (although they are both cheap). Ox tails in particular were cheaper. 4. La Gran Parada has more choices 5 Pito's only has street parking I think We tried the ox tails (rabo), pig's ears, stewed chicken and fried bananas with both white and yellow rice. It was all very good. Pig's ears is an acquired taste (actually more of an acquired texture as the sauce is what gives it taste). It is "blubbery" like tripe but can also be a bit grissly. It's definitely different but I liked it-maybe not enough to order it again though. Next time I want to try the chicharron which I love and compare it with La Gran Parada which was very good. read more

Pito's is the place to go if you want a meal that will satisfy your SOUL. The food here is so good. The ox tail and goat is delectable. I live outside the city by quite a ways and I have taken so many trips for a taste of heaven at Pito's. Beans and rice, pork, beef, chicken, goat, ox, cod, various soups, empanadas, chicarrones... Wrong, in comes Pito's out of nowhere and thanks to Yelp I found this place and ran to it. From the menu, to the way you ordered I was right back in New Jersey. In a late Saturday afternoon, we saw dozens of locals come in, order, quickly get a Styrofoam container of food and make of with their prize. A few sat and ate quietly. If you are looking for linens or fancy anything - this is not the place. The only menu are some pictures on the wall, the humble flatware is bent and English is barely spoken. The staff are accepting of tourists. One was able to explain, gesturing to huge serving trays: rice, beef, chicken, pork and meatballs. With a bit of trepidation we gestured and ultimately got a huge plate of food. After a few mouthfuls, we experience rich, flavorful, nutritious food for the soul. I feel like I've finally hit the jackpot of all great, authentic Spanish, soul food in all of New England. Not only does this place represent everything that's great and homey with a "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant run by mom-n-pop, but the food is soooo amazing, well prepared, plentiful and cheap. Granted, the neighborhood may be less that desirable to walk dark at night, but that cannot and should not detain you from experience terrific food as I had experienced tonight. Walking through the very unassuming front entrance, I am greeted by a buffet style counter with a myriad of meats and veggies (...potatoes and plantains) and a smell that will turn any meat-eater into a puddle of salivary delight. There are no prices, no menus, only a overhead picture of some combinations of awesomeness that you can get. I don't speak any Spanish, but some things in life transcends language, and that is certainly the aroma of slow cooked pork/chicken/beef using secret family recipes. I don't even know what I ate, it involved pork and chicken? But I tried the stew and it was amazing! The sweetened plantains were piled in with the beefy broth that made the meal so desirable and regrettable when the plate was finally empty. I also ended up getting the fried pork, only $3 for many generous cuts of the amazing piggy goodness. Overall, I only spent $10 for an amazing dish that you can't find anywhere in Providence. Am I gonna recommend this place to all my friends? You betcha! Just come during the daytime...lol. I also met the owner, Pito, who's really nice and friendly. Let me first say that I was 8 miles away when I brought up Yelp for the highest rated lunch selection and Pito's came in at #1. Wow I thought, it has to be great! I made my way to the eatery ( I don't think that a place with 5 fast food-type benches is really a restaurant) and found Pito's right on a corner in a busy neighborhood. One reviewer had said that they don't know if they would venture into this neighborhood at night and I did notice that most off-street parking areas (including the local fire station) were surrounded by high chain link fencing that reminded me of that comment. I like trying off the beaten path places so I parked and headed inside. Pito's has a food counter style set-up and I hopped to the end of the short line to place my order. I had time to review the 20 or so numbered photographs hanging above the kitchen area and when I got to the counter I ordered #13. Even with the pictures and my gestures, it took a while for the server and I to connect on what I was asking for and he loaded a plate with rice (with meat sauce) and ribs along with a side plate of lettuce and pickled beet slices with a house dressing. While my meal was good it certainly didn't blow me away. The taste of the food, while good, didn't stand out from many other spanish restaurants that I've been to. The portions are large, the staff friendly (even with the language barrier) and the seating along the street offered plenty of people watching. All in all, I wouldn't make the trip back just for this restaurant and, if I find myself in the same area again, I'll try someplace new. read more

Super good, homey, Dominican Criollo cuisine. Here they have Arroz con Gandules, Carne Frita, Yuca, Goat, Pig's Foot and plenty more offerings. Daily they have a chicken dish, a beef dish, and the other rotates. The food here is cheap and filling. One order here could last me for lunch and dinner. I love this place! It's a mom & pop shop. Some people would call it a hole in the wall, I simply look past that; it's more about the food. So if you're faint of heart this isn't the place for you to try. read more

While taking a jaunt around New England we stumbled across Pito's as it was near a zoo in Cranston. As soon as I opened the door I knew I made a good choice in lunch spots. Yes the dining area was small, yes the neighbourhood looked a bit rough (it was fine) and yes there was a bit of a language barrier. The food spoke volumes all by itself. For 17 dollars my wife and daughter and I filled our famished bellies with all the braised goat and red beans and rice we could eat. The wait staff was warm and friendly and the fact that I look like the Aryan poster child was not an issue amongst the other patrons. I will return the next time I'm in town. read more

One of the hidden gems even though it is located on a corner on a busy Cranston Street. The neighborhood is something that is less than desirable but if you can get past that unsightly area, the food will soon get you over the hump. El Plato Grande "The Big Plate" lives up to it's name and at $7 bucks with a variety to choose from as far as meats go, this is still my go to for authentic Dominican food. read more

I too like Pito's when I'm in the mood for inexpensive heart attack friendly Dominican. To maximize your experience here, come here early enough to miss the lunch crowd lines and to ensure that your food is fresh and not just drying out under a heat lamp or getting watered down from the steamers (which is likely to happen if you come in later). For me, this spot is probably in the 70th percentile of available Latino food that I've tried in Providence overall, worth occasional revisits but not necessarily first and foremost in my mind when I want Dominican/Latin (I've found some spots that are less expensive, better tasting, or both). I'd give this place 3.5 stars which can be bumped up to 4 if they pay more attention to cleanliness in the dining area. read more
