It's a no from me... this is my second time trying this place, and both times have been disappointing... their food looks incredible on social media, but what you get is not even close. Unfortunately for this fish, it was bland, overcooked, and tasted of old grease. The fries were seasoned so much that you were essentially eating spoon fulls of old bay. The wait was almost an hour past our pick up time. I understand being busy, but it might be more beneficial to reflect a more accurate pick up time... Strange Roots itself is a small space with nice outdoor seating. I'm not a huge fan of the beer here either, but the bartender was very nice and accommodating during our visit. I ordered the fish sandwich pictured at the top of their menu. They were renting the space at the strange roots brewery, but they are usually a food truck. We ordered 2 sandwiches at 6:10 PM, the wait was a little longer than anticipated and was ready at 7:00 pm. It smelled mildly "fishy" but it is fish after all. First impression, it did not appear as advertised. It was missing the sauce and lettuce pictured on the website. I took three bites and unfortunately, the fish was hard. It seemed over cooked which may have contributed to the time it took to receive it. The grease also tasted old. The Mac on top was again, overcooked. The French fries were cooked well, but they had so much old bay seasoning and salt it was difficult to eat. I wish this were unique to my order, but I was dinning with three others, all ordering the same thing, and we all had the same complaints. I did request to speak with someone in the kitchen but they said they didn't have time as they were quite busy. The brewery was full and outside seating was also starting to fill so that is understandable. The bartender at strange roots had us write our names on a piece of paper and said the kitchen will refund the meals. I contemplated ordering a burger instead but didn't want to wait again so we did leave to dine elsewhere. read more

I've been to the sandwich society a handful of times and have enjoyed it each time. I've had it from the food truck and from the restaurant location at strange roots and in each instance the food was great! I couldn't tell ya what all I've gotten, though I know we've had some Nashville hots and we got a fried fish sandwich during lent. Been following these guys on social media for a few weeks now and find myself drooling over mouth-watering pics. We've been out of town for the last couple weeks so on our first Friday back I was sure to stop off for a couple meals. Ordering is easy to do at the counter but even easy through the website. Be sure to look for the link on their Instagram. Our sandwiches and fries were between 10-11 dollars and we were able to leave a tip and set a pickup time all online. Food was ready within moments of our pickup window and due to inclement weather we were forced to drive home before partaking. My wife did the cheeseburger and I did the hot chicken this time around. There are two other options we'd like to try (pulled pork and grilled chicken) but this was a great intro. The chicken breast and burger patties were large, the toppings of the burger plentiful, and the fries were just enough without going overboard. I didn't love the fries but I chalk it up to them having sat and gone a little cold before we made it home to consume. The anticipation is built up was not a letdown at all. My boyfriend had the Buffalo Chicken sandwich and I had the Patty Melt. The Melt comes on rye which I hate. Thy generously offered to use a brioche roll instead. Wow, wow, wow!!! That thing melted in my mouth from first bite to last. I was so stuffed but I was also close to ordering another one. It was time for a new taste adventure, so down to Inner Groove Brewery, my boyfriend and I went. There was the Pittsburgh Sandwich Society ready to give us yummy sandwiches. What's holding me back is the pricing. It was $9 for a burger and around the same price for a spicy chicken sandwich both of which did not come with fries :( A side of fries is $3 extra. The meat is smashed and crispy, topped with american cheese. This isn't a cheddar cheese, big meat lump, medium rare, "artisan" chewy bun, kind of burger. This is for people with taste buds. The sandwich isn't too big, which may come as a surprise to non burger aficionados, but you could always ask them to make it a triple for a small upcharge (do it!). They've even obliged me a "quad" on an extra hungry day, although I wouldn't recommend, as that throws off the topping ratios. I've heard the veggie burger and chicken sandwich are pretty good. Tried them out at the Millvale Food Truck Park... we got the chopped cheese! Tasted good until I found my first blonde hair in the sandwich... I thought whatever we are all human no big deal! Last bite of the sandwich and hair #2 this time it's brunette, they managed to give me a piece of at last two cooks tonight! That was the last straw, I took the sandwich back and asked for a refund.
