Detroit pizza near the Pike? I'm there. And so it was that I wound up at Pizza Monkey, staring at a garage door, wondering if my GPS had made a mistake. But a garage door seems apt for a Detroit Pizza, no? I ordered the vegetarian and it presented well - bright cheese with scattered veggies and two racing stripes of sauce. Only downside was that it seemed a little undercooked. No matter, the flavors were there. Detroit pizza hasn't taken hold of the DMV just yet, but when it does, I think Pizza Monkey will be able to compete.

I'm sad because I 100% love Detroit style pizza, however, this didn't meet the mark. It was exactly as others have noted, the dough felt honestly premade, extremely dense, chewy, but not in a good way, like an overdone loaf of white bread as someone mentioned, the cheese was indeed rubbery, and the toppings was sparse. What also concerned me is that the flavor was missing; the sauce wasn't flavorful at all. The toppings also weren't flavorful, so it really did come across as a dense piece of bread with some items put on top. I ordered the share box I believe, which came with your choice of two small pizzas and breadsticks, and I'm sorry, the breadsticks were diabolical. And I also ordered a separate small that had the pepperoni, green pepper and mushroom and again, where were the toppings. I've been to corned beef king and I thought the sandwiches were amazing, but this pizza feels like an afterthought, and honestly to spend $53 on it, was deeply insulting. I don't think I can recommend, and although I want to rate it 2.5 stars, I can't go up to three in good conscience so I think it's going to be a two.

I ate this with my family and it was so disappointing. I expected pan pizza but it felt more like flatbread with pizza toppings. Pan pizza should at least be 3/4 of an inch thick but this was like a thin crust except at the edges. Also, this pizza was more bland than a 2010s Disney sitcom and whatever flavor was there was worse than frozen pizza. The cheese was rubbery and there were also black stains on the underside of my pizza. No idea what they were but sus regardless. I'm a teenager, I literally eat almost anything, but I refused to finish this pizza and that's crazy since I almost always finish my food even if it's mid.

I am obsessed with Pizza Monkey and their delicious Detroit-style pizza! Their calzones are stuffed and their bright, slightly sweet, mouth-watering sauce has to be my favorite part of every bite (so you know it's good!). Their toppings are fresh and generous. Service at this location has always been prompt and kind, especially when the owner and his family are working the window (his teenaged son makes the sauce and works there after school, from what it seems like, I think that's so sweet). This is mainly a carry out location, room inside the pick up area is pretty tight, but there are a few outdoor tables to eat at right outside in the parking lot. I believe the business is open Thursdays- Sundays currently. They operate out of Corned Beef King's kitchen (another amazing local business to support). There has always been plenty of parking (free, all outdoor) at the location.

Four stars, not many reviews , but still decided to try it out. Calzone and sweet heat wings. Both were trash. The calzone dough taste like a loaf of white bread. No exaggeration when I say 2 pepperonis , 1 sausage and 1 green pepper inside. Was more like a cheese calzone. Nonetheless the meats had no taste to them whatsoever. As for the wings . Super salty. Tough. Only positive about this experience was the food being hot. Oh almost forgot about the marinara... trash. I mean unless you like your sauce tasting like it's straight out of a can/jar.

A little slice of Detroit...reminds me of my time there with Buddies-styled square pizza baked to perfection-crisp on the sides, but still hearty in the middle, along with Vernors pop. Hope they do super well!

We ordered an Egg and Cruller Wrap, Scallion Pancake, Pork & Rice Shumai, Chicken XLB, Pan Fried Pork Buns, and Cucumbers. Order was ready on time but know that since its was a Sunday so it took around 45 minutes due to how busy it was. We really liked the Pork & Rice Shumai and the Pan Fried Pork buns were our favorites. Both filled really well. The Chicken XLB (like most carryout dumplings) kind of exploded mostly so we didn't get the best experience there but the flavor was good. The egg cruller wrap was solid but doesn't travel well. The scallion pancake was a little thicker/breadier than I'm used to. Cucumbers were solid. This place definitely needs to be experienced dine in, especially based on how busy their dining room was that day. If you're in a rush though, their takeout is solid.

A solid spot for sharing with a group, and I'd happily return to explore more of the menu. I really wanted to love this place. The soup dumplings are among the better ones in the area. While the wrappers aren't as thin or chewy as the very best, you can tell they're handmade, and I'll always appreciate that. I'd recommend sticking with the pork soup dumplings since they were rich, savory, and full of umami. The crab version unfortunately didn't have any noticeable crab flavor and tasted almost identical to the pork. The duck came in a generous portion and is a great choice for anyone who enjoys sweeter flavors. The watercress was fresh and plentiful, but it could have used much more garlic. We ended up adding the wonton chili oil and dipping it for extra flavor. The cucumber was delicious, but the portion was way too small. The bean curd was cooked well, though there wasn't enough pork for a dish that was supposed to feature it. The fish was another highlight with light spice, a crispy exterior, and perfectly cooked, tender meat. Overall, I'd definitely come back to try more dishes. I enjoy the home-style cooking, and it's the kind of restaurant that's especially fun to visit with a larger group so you can sample a variety of dishes.

We ordered some app, sushi, and a ton of meats. The sushi was so/so the ikura was a bit fishy/not the freshest, but I gave it a pass since it was included in the AYCE. The fried lotus was surprisingly my favorite non meat dish. Our friend rice was served lukewarm (the consistency of rice was a bit uneven like older rice that was left out for a bit) and way too oily so we had to send it back. Had no issues with the meat and service - although it was a tad slow and the 10 minute cooldown between ordering was unexpected. Our server was great and kept checking in with us. A few items we ordered never made it out to us, but at that point we were too full to care. My main complaint was with one of the hosts. We finished our meal and thanked our waiter and made our way back to the parking garage. From behind, we heard a very loud "EXCUSE ME." We originally thought we had dropped something and someone was looking out for us, but was appalled when she followed us halfway across the street and said "you think you're just going to leave without paying for your mocktail?" That was hands down the rudest I've been treated by a customer service based establishment. I've worked in hospitality and know you should never accuse a customer of anything. To make matters worse, she got the wrong people - we never ordered a mocktail. Will likely not return to Gyuzo for a while and stick to other bbq places with better service.
