I was shopping in the area and took the opportunity to order a pizza to take home. My husband is particularly keen on Detroit style, and we have had quite a few Detroit style pizzas from places over the years both in and outside of Detroit. This one was pretty good, but I do have a quibble; the crust was much denser than Detroit style crust usually is. The height of the pizza was about 2/3 of the usual height of a light and airy but thick Detroit style crust, so I am not sure if this dough just didn't rise properly or if PM does their crust differently. I don't personally care for heavy thick crust so this isn't a deviation I particularly care for. That said, I did like the robust sauce and the cheese, toppings were sufficient though not exceptionally generously applied. I recommend getting hot honey on the side if you want that, it was less noticeable pre-applied, though I could taste it a little. The pop up is colocated with Corned Beef King and there is a picnic table for when the weather is good but it is primarily takeout. Food was ready ontime so I was in and out super quickly. If you don't mind a heavier crust you should give them a try. I'll probably be back when hubs wants a Detroit style and we don't have time to drive to Frederick where the best one I've found in MD can be had, but tbh just one slice sat like a brick in my tummy. read more

Pizza monkey shares a kitchen with corned beef king, so it is the same window. I ordered one place for myself, this for the kids. They catered to my picky kids well and made a pizza that my kids took down like it was their job! My 3 year old that barely eats took down 2 slices when an average adult probably couldn't eat more than one or 2 slices. I stole a few bites and it was incredible. Detroit pizza near the Pike? I'm there. And so it was that I wound up at Pizza Monkey, staring at a garage door, wondering if my GPS had made a mistake. But a garage door seems apt for a Detroit Pizza, no? I ordered the vegetarian and it presented well - bright cheese with scattered veggies and two racing stripes of sauce. Only downside was that it seemed a little undercooked. No matter, the flavors were there. I'm sad because I 100% love Detroit style pizza, however, this didn't meet the mark. It was exactly as others have noted, the dough felt honestly premade, extremely dense, chewy, but not in a good way, like an overdone loaf of white bread as someone mentioned, the cheese was indeed rubbery, and the toppings was sparse. What also concerned me is that the flavor was missing; the sauce wasn't flavorful at all. The toppings also weren't flavorful, so it really did come across as a dense piece of bread with some items put on top. I ordered the share box I believe, which came with your choice of two small pizzas and breadsticks, and I'm sorry, the breadsticks were diabolical. And I also ordered a separate small that had the pepperoni, green pepper and mushroom and again, where were the toppings. I've been to corned beef king and I thought the sandwiches were amazing, but this pizza feels like an afterthought, and honestly to spend $53 on it, was deeply insulting. I don't think I can recommend, and although I want to rate it 2.5 stars, I can't go up to three in good conscience so I think it's going to be a two. read more

I ate this with my family and it was so disappointing. I expected pan pizza but it felt more like flatbread with pizza toppings. Pan pizza should at least be 3/4 of an inch thick but this was like a thin crust except at the edges. Also, this pizza was more bland than a 2010s Disney sitcom and whatever flavor was there was worse than frozen pizza. The cheese was rubbery and there were also black stains on the underside of my pizza. No idea what they were but sus regardless. I'm a teenager, I literally eat almost anything, but I refused to finish this pizza and that's crazy since I almost always finish my food even if it's mid. read more

I am obsessed with Pizza Monkey and their delicious Detroit-style pizza! Their calzones are stuffed and their bright, slightly sweet, mouth-watering sauce has to be my favorite part of every bite (so you know it's good!). Their toppings are fresh and generous. Service at this location has always been prompt and kind, especially when the owner and his family are working the window (his teenaged son makes the sauce and works there after school, from what it seems like, I think that's so sweet). This is mainly a carry out location, room inside the pick up area is pretty tight, but there are a few outdoor tables to eat at right outside in the parking lot. I believe the business is open Thursdays- Sundays currently. They operate out of Corned Beef King's kitchen (another amazing local business to support). Four stars, not many reviews , but still decided to try it out. Calzone and sweet heat wings. Both were trash. The calzone dough taste like a loaf of white bread. No exaggeration when I say 2 pepperonis , 1 sausage and 1 green pepper inside. Was more like a cheese calzone. Nonetheless the meats had no taste to them whatsoever. As for the wings . Super salty. Tough. Only positive about this experience was the food being hot. Oh almost forgot about the marinara... trash. Well. Done. I have only had Detroit style pizza in the city itself and DC, and I have my favorite spots. But now MD has it and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I finally had an opportunity to visit and it's in a little industrial pocket. It shares space with Corned Beef King that has some awesome looking sandwiches that I saw many people come in to try. There's a little bench space outside, and a few tables right inside, but otherwise I would declare this a takeout spot. You can either order on the QR code or with someone if they come to the window. They'll shoot you a text when your order is ready. The small pizzas, which are 4 solid squares, start at $14 and you can pick from their recommendations or build your own. I went with the Jack-a-roni, which adds pepperoni, green peppers, and mushrooms as toppings. In about 15 minutes it was ready. When it arrived, I grabbed the bench outside so I could get a fresh taste. THEY DID IT! It had that perfect crisp on the outside, and the flavors were just amazing. They also have a salad, calzones, breadsticks, and drinks. If you like Detroit-style or have always been curious to try it, you will not be disappointed. I can promise you that. read more

I Really luv Chicago style pizza that's my number #1. New york use to be number #2 but now that I have tried Detroit style I'm a big fan. The pizza was ridiculously good with fresh high quality ingredients you can taste. Owner was cool as well. Great pizza. Super friendly service. My introduction to Detroit-style pizza was with Jets in the Chicago area, which, as a large franchisor, has things dialed-in and consistent. Most independent Detroit-style pizzerias I've tried outside the Midwest can't compete: frequently, their dough is overly thick or bready. Or the edges aren't just crispy; they're blackened to the point of being rock-hard. But Pizza Monkey gets it right. On a Saturday night, we got three pizzas, and they were all perfectly cooked: spongy, chewy, and cheesy in the middle with browned, crispy edges. It seems like they lay their dough down a little thinner than others, so maybe that helps them bake it just right, consistently. Also, the sauce is great: nothing overly zesty or weird. Instead, it's just a straight ahead, slightly sweet sauce that complements the cheese and adds some moisture. On top of the great pizza, the service was friendly and generous. We ordered three small (4-piece) pies, but when we picked-up our order, the staff said, "We ran out of small doughs, so I threw in three larges (8 pieces) for you!" The deep dish pizza was great. I ordered make your topping pizza. The one good thing is that the deep dish pizza dough was well cook through. I've had other deep dish pizza and the dough was not quite well cooked through. Hate the raw doughy taste. It's only take out so no service other than picking up the orders. It was prompt as stated on the order confirmation. One thing that confused me was it's the same location as King of Corn Beef sandwich which is nice if you want to order & pick up other items. Wanted to like this more and was looking forward to it based off the Yelp reviews and having watched videos about Detroit style pizzas. We r big fans of New Haven and NYC pizza, and homemade cast iron pan pizza made from well hydrated and rested dough. I don't understand some of the more recent 5 star reviews here - do some of these Yelp "elites" who think this is a good example of Detroit style even know what real Detroit style pan pizza looks and tastes like? Just do a quick Yelp search for this style in actual Detroit, MI like Grandma Bob's, and you will see thicker slices with most places putting the pepperoni on top of the cheese and what looks like much more generous amounts of toppings. Compare our pics below for a large pepperoni. Am so glad I didn't drive far as we were all disappointed. Isn't Detroit style pizza supposed to be thicker and less dense? The cheese here was a little rubbery and sauce mid, not very flavorful. Was expecting a thicker, fluffier, more flavorful dough. At least the edges were crispy. Pepperoni was soggy under the cheese and couldn't see how much they actually put on, didn't taste a lot of pepperoni flavor. My son happened to flip a slice over and was concerned about the dark/blackish oil splotches that were away from the edges vs. what we were expecting- light or dark brown undercarriage. Excellent pizza with good quality cheese and a consistent, crispy crust. If you order ahead, the pick up space/process is super confusing, though. The first time I came, I was the only person around and had to knock on the window to get someone to come over and then retrieve my food. The second time, there was a line out the door that was not moving because apparently Corned Beef King, a burger/snacks(?) shop, and Pizza Monkey all operate out of the same window now, which I think is the Corned Beef King's window. There were a few signs directing customers for pick up vs. ordering but they all point to the same place and none of them are restaurant-specific. There was only one employee, no idea which place he worked for, taking orders at the window and no one doing pick up orders. It took 20 minutes past when my food was ready to figure out the line and then for the guy taking orders to get someone to retrieve it. Food was still good but by the time I got home it was lukewarm and the wings had gone soggy. It's a very small space so it wouldn't take a whole lot to get a better system and signage in place. read more
