Glad I found this place before they close down. June 3rd will be their last day before moving to Maryland. I frequented downtown Pleasanton for 30 years and somehow never knew there was a tiny bakery tucked behind a parking lot. To see that a shop in tiny o' Pleasanton ranked #8 in Top Asian-Owned Bakeries in the US this year? I had to see what's up! TLDR; good food, authentic Filipino pasteries. Don't expect much of anything else. Ordering - I wanted to know what I want before I got there. Sadly as someone not well-versed in Filipino foods, I was overwhelmed by the lack of description presented on Yelp and on their website. I also couldn't pre-order because the earliest would be 5-6 days out. This place only opens 3 days a week and on Thu/Fri, only between 3-6pm. That means you either preorder, or you'll have to fight for the leftovers. The shop - So I went at exactly 3pm, as did many others. It was frustratingly taking about 10 mins per person because people order in bulk and need an explanation of each item, don't know what they want so they gotta call everyone and their mothers, or the shop owners themselves took a sweet time preparing the...prepared items? It was also likely busy because everyone knows this is the last week. Again, no labels, no menu. I didn't want to be the person asks what everything is, but I had to. Tiny shop. Not a lot of air. Can't fit more than 2 people at once. Food - aside from a few tarts and cookies, they only come in bulk. I personally don't like this because I don't have a family of 8 to feed. Flavors come in ube, pandan, and some caramel. I wish I could tell you what I got, but I can't because there were no labels. I wish I could come back more, but I can't eat this many in my own! To try: Ask for their most popular item, which is basically a filled donut with coconut flakes on top! I don't have a personal favorite. They're all good and not too sweet. Conclusion: it's good, not in a way that makes me say "yes this is one of the best in the US" but I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something special.

Sooo happy Rina wasn't sold out of all the goodies we wanted to try. We were lucky enough to come the last hour before closing and grabbed everything we could get! Our favorite was obviously the popular ensaymada balls. I bought so much to take home and share with my mom and her bestie that just got back from the PI and they also loved it! We also tried the pastries with guava, crinkle cookies, and the ube tarts which also hit the spot!

I met the Bunso pastries at a work event and boy did I fall in love with their offerings. Here's what I got about them on their website - only Filipino Bakery in the Tri-Valley. I tried most of what they had to offer that looked Ube or had the word Ube ( purple yam). Here's what I tried and everything was scrumptious but I am ordering this from my favorite to least favorite - 1) Ensaymada Balls - bite sized Filipino brioche filled with Ube and condensed milk 2) Ube Cheese Tart - this was super yummy 3) Ube Krinkles - soft indulgent cookies - truly these were 4) Ube Mochi Cake Balls - I really wanted to love this one - it was so pretty but got lost in too many things happening - too dense, something jammy in the center... This was an awesome experience and definitely a unique one.

My husband and I were craving something sweet after lunch and found this little gem!! Bunso is a Filipino bakery located in downtown Pleasanton. The storefront is not big but they carry a diverse selection of delicious treats. Since we have never really had Filipino baked goods, the owner was extremely helpful in explaining to us what everything was and providing recommendations. She even gave us samples of the yema and ube ensaymada (little brioche breads with sweet filling) while we were debating what to get. We ended up buying the ensaymadas and ube cheese tart. We can't wait to return to support this local business and try other items they offer (mochi bites, flan cupcake, etc.) next time!

Their baked goods are so delicious they were gone soon after I brought them home! Staff were friendly and helpful. Wish this place was closer to me.

Pretty well stocked with the standard stuff! Certainly high quality! Plus some wonderfully unique spins on filipino pastries here! Support local! Love me a good Filipino bakery spot! Bunso Breads is no exception. Satisfied with my purchase. The price point is a little bit more, but I'm keeping in mind the small shop size but high quality product! Lady serving my friends and I was helpful to explain what was in the food they were unfamiliar with. My friend was looking for something she had before but couldn't remember the name, and she found it!

Fair warning, I was emotionally attached to this place even before entering because I too, am a bunso LOL. This is must do when you're out and about on Main Street in Pleasanton on the weekends. Walking in, I got serious flashbacks to my favorite sari-sari store in my old San Francisco neighborhood. It's small but there were goodies stacked everywhere! I went a little rogue and just grabbed a whole bunch of things to share with my family. Everything I got was great but for sure get the yema ensaymada balls, ube rolls with quezo inside, guava rolls, and the spinach pastry. I can wait to go back and try the buko pie, ube senorita, and ube flan. Pro tip: bring cash. They accept card but there's a 5% charge.

Top: ube senorita bread 2nd row: coconut ube pie , (back) ube cream cheese pillow bread Bottom: yema ensaymada

I LOVE BUNSO BREADS BAKERY & CAFE! I'm also glad it's a place that I have to make a special trip out to get because I would be so chub chub if it was within ..... I don't know, 10min driving distance? haha I'd be here all the time. BUT because I am NOT there all the time, I buy A LOT when I come. What can I say? I love my ube. This is a bit of a delayed post because I've been here at least a hand full of times since the pandemic, usually ordering ahead online (very convenient btw, and a good way to make sure you get everything you want- note that quantities are usually in dozens, but you can easily finish them all). However, this past Friday I happen to be in the area with my mom and decided to walk in and try our luck. Luckily the owner had a little of everything, so I indulged myself in.......everything. I walked in with my mom and the the owner was super sweet so we got to chat with her for a little bit. I would not recommend walk in because if you don't come first thing, she will sell out of items you may want to try. So again, order ahead on the website- It's very convenient. Items I would highly recommend: - Ube senorita bread (good for a few days after if you keep it in the fridge and microwave it back for 15sec) - Yema ensaymada (good for a few days after if you keep it in the fridge and microwave it back for 15sec) - Ube cream cheese pillow bread (these don't keep as well so best consumed fresh! When it's fresh it's SO soft and good) Other items I also enjoy: - Ube crinkle cookies - though a tad too sweet for me sometimes, but flavor is good - Coconut ube pie Now get out there and support your small local bakery that is packed with delicious Filipino goodies!

Picked up some of these gems today after lunch at my favorite Filipino bakery in the Tri-Valley! These are going down quick in our house. A bite of the cheese then from the ube is the move Thanks Bunso fam!

I could write a long review about how Bunso is the ultimate bakery to go to if you're in Pleasanton, but I'm going to sum it up to the most important points: YOU NEED TO GO!!! Everything is absolutely delicious. You have the variety of more traditional desserts and goods to creative takes on delicious Filipino flavors. Come through, buy everything. Bunso Breads is one of the best stops you can make in this part of the Bay.

Omg, this place will definitely get me in some trouble! The owner is super sweet reminded me so much of being in the Philippines! I am not sure how I never knew this place existed. But hey I know now! I got there soon as they opened and waited a few minutes to order. I ended up getting some ensaymada balls, Buko pie, Ube senorita bread ! I love the Buko pie it reminded me of the Philippines so much. Now that I know it's here I will be back more often to try more goodie!

Pam K.

This is a tiny establishment offering a nice variety of Filipino baked goods. There wasn't much room inside due to the set up. I really enjoyed the ube cheese tarts the most. The man who helped me was very friendly and helpful in recommending things to try. There were other people who walked in and walked out because it wasn't what they were expecting. Apparently that happens often however it's their loss because most of the goodies here are delightful. The only thing I didn't care for was the flan because the texture was a little more rubbery and wasn't to my preference.

A nice sign on Main St. to help find the bakery

Ask the Community - Bunso Breads Bakery & Cafe

Are they still open fbusiness in Pleasanton?

Are you still open for walk ins on the weekends? Will you be open today 1/22? Thank you!

Hi, on Saturdays, open from 12-5pm unless I sell out. Starting this Sunday, today (22 Jan), I’ll be going to Fremont Farmers’ Market so bakery is closed. Thanks.

Did the original owner, Rina, sell the business? Is there a new owner that will specialize in the same products moving forward? Thx

Hi, still in the process and looking for a new business to transfer the bakery over. Praying for a Filipino business to continue the Filipino representation in the area, but open to anyone. Thanks.

Will this bakery be fulfilling online orders anytime soon? As in delivery thru FedEx or UPS or OnTrac?

Hi, will open this Sat and Sunday… walk-in, 12-5pm

Are the Filipino breads still available after Christmas this year 2022?

Hi… the bakery is closed for the next two weeks. Will update the operational hours later. Thanks.

Do you still sell your pianono (rolled cake)? They were the best!

Hi, yes… I make pianono..

What pastries are available for walk-in orders?

Hi, I always have ensaymadas, cheese tarts, mochi cake balls, mamons (sponge cupcakes)... and a few more.

Do you still sell chicken empanadas?

Hi! At this time... no. Sorry

Are u guys open to walk-ins order?

Hi Brandon, hit or miss on walk-ins due to very limited items that may be available. We encourage pre-order if you know which ones you want. Better that way so you get what you ordered and pick up the next day. No production on Mondays and… Read more

Are you guys open for Togo during this quarantine?

Online only free shipping to CA. No walk-ins. Order at bunsobakery.com. Call 925-5703212 for details.

Are you open or available for take out during shelter in place?

Yes, they are. You have to order online at bunsobakery.com

What does Bunso mean?

It roughly translates to "youngest", like the youngest child/sibling.

Hi! Are the ube pastries are seasonal or all year around? Thanks in advance!

All year round

Do they have señorita bread?

Yes

Why is it nobody is answering the phone?

Because they're busy. We tried but then just went over. It was apparent when we arrived.

We went on the address indicated twice on the same day but it was so private. We parked in Front of the house with Bunso Sticker and was looking for door bell. We also called but no one answered. How can we buy and have a taste of this bread?

We are a home bakery in a residential area. Did you go yesterday? We were closed for an event in San Francisco. The side that you parked is a garage and the entrance is at the front door. Come around next time. Call 608-4336349 or 925-2886562. Our… Read more

Just faaaaannnnnttttasssiiiicccc. I'm big on bread and it was so soft. It was served on a toasted roll along with big pieces of pork with a skin that was so crispy and crackling to complement the juicy meat. The portions were huge, which surprised me. Everything is such small portions these days but it was worth the cost. You have a choice between fries and chips. The chips were not home made so I opted for the fries. They also gave me a side of sauce, which almost tasted like Big Mac sauce? The arugula also adds on to the taste. My biggest regret was not getting two! So I came on weekend as soon as it opened. There were only a few tables for diners. There were shelves of food and goods available to buy. Being a first timer, I had trouble to order the blackboard menu was on top of the counter, but I don't think everything was on the menu. I saw people carrying milkshakes but I couldn't find any on the menu. I ordered staff favorites Lechon kawali bowl. It came with garlic rice, sweet longanisa, a fried egg, and the signature Crispy port belly. It was good, but the garlic rice needed more flavor, because only a little sweet longanisa was added, I had to ask for extra sauce to finish the meal. Although friends vouched for the delicious food, but I found pork belly was just ok. And overall needs a bit more flavor. I also had Une custard cake which was too sweet for me. I would definitely come back to try more dishes!
