Got some Ube Pies, which is one of my favorites and a few donuts - Ube and Nutella. When I cut the Nutella, I noticed the filling was not as much (on the inside) as it was for the Ube donut. I don't know if that was a fluke or that's how it always is. I still enjoyed the donut though. I've been coming to Gwenie's for 7+ years, and it's still my go-to Filipino bakery in Rockville, MD. I stopped in around 10AM onna Sunday for their fresh pan de sal (baked until 11AM) and grabbed a few warm bags to share. The real reason I came was for their ube cheesecake for my goddaughter's birthday -- and wow. Rich, heavy (in the best way), and easily one of the best ube desserts in the DMV. It disappeared fast. After this visit, I literally sent three other friends here -- and they all walked out with a full load of baked goods and loved everything. I finally went to the actual Gwenie's store recently. I usually have had their stuff from other stores (kuya ja) or just ordered by someone for events. I got some donuts, an ube pandesal, and the ube pie. They sell out pretty fast on the donuts so I recommend going earlier in the day vs later. The donuts are really yummy; I love pandan flavored things so I really enjoyed the pandan donut. Nice pandan flavor (more on the subtle side) in the cream filling. The donut is fluffy and chewing like a good yeast donut should be. The ube filled one was also yummy; very nice obe flavor. My personal favorite thing I got was the ube pandesal. Light and fluffy bread with a sweet ube filling (not ube cream like the donut). I think the bread with the more dense ube filling goes very well together. Definitely will go back to try other things. Halo halo is on the list of things to try for sure. read more

I've been meaning to visit Gwenie's! I've heard amazing things about it. I've been twice and omg, everything is absolutely DIVINE!! I tried the flan, perfect. Delicious, just the right amount of sweetness. The Ube cheesecake, WOW! So so yummy!! I went back to try their doughnuts. Tried the mango, ube and pandan, all absolutely amazing. The filling is creamy and not too sweet, the doughnut itself is a beautiful texture. Crispy yet soft. I have to come back and try the rest if their desserts. BIG FAN!!! My new favorite place for treats. Parking is easy, every time I visit there's plenty of spots. Location is a bit hidden so make sure you drive a bit slowly or you'll miss it. I'm automatically interested if it's a bakery with more "unique" flavors- This Asian American (Filipino) Bakery has my heart (and wallet!) Gwenie's is worth the hype. The building is small, to the side somewhere, but has so many sweets to choose from! From donuts, pies, cheesecakes, and cookies to traditional Filipino sweets! I'm personally a fan of tropical flavors like coconut, mango, etc so I had to get the mango cream filled donut; I also got their popular, Ube Cheesecake. The Ube Cheesecake was SO good. The crust especially is amazing- it's got coconut for sure and it tastes like a caramelized coconut rice sugarcane concoction. It definitely tastes like a Cheesecake so I wish the Ube flavor was more potent, but it's still a must buy! Next time, I'll try their Ube Pie. Their Mango donut is clearly popular, as I took the last donut standing. But, I'm a little disappointed because I anticipated a STRONG in your face mango taste. Sweet little spot. Based on the interior, it's definitely meant to be a to-go place; there's not much of an ambiance--just a bare room with pastries. I got the ube halo-halo, which was good. Store front is unassuming and so is the store, but don't let that stop you! Helpful staff. We tried a little bit of everything that had ube. All delicious! Ube donuts were dense and ube filling was not too sweet, but just right. We love the ube rolls as they were fresh and soft. Ube cheesecake is great, but they often run out. They will double check in the back for you without hesitation. We even bought the halaya spread on its own and it was finger-licking' good! I came here after seeing this place on Yelp's recommendation list. I popped in on a Sunday just before 2 PM and was happy to see that during the closing hour everything in the showcase is 30% off. (This applies only to the donuts and breads). The quality of the pastries at the shop are unmatched! I purchased an Ube pie and an Ube donut and was in heaven at first bite. My friend purchased the Ube cheesecake and Ube donut and the Dubai donut. I tried the Dubai donut and it was more than I could ever expect. It was like a chocolate eclair on steroids with a hazelnut flavor to it. So good! (For reference, I LOVE chocolate). The clerk at the counter was so helpful and explaining the ingredients in the different options. The shop itself is very small, but has enough space to pick what you need. I have heard about Gwenie's foreverrrrrrr. And I go to Manila Mart occasionally and their desserts are there. They're at Kuya Ja's too! Crazily enough I never showed up to the source.... until today!At the time I went, it wasn't long after a snowstorm, so the already small parking lot was pretty full, and some spots were occupied with piles of ice and snow. I was able to visit the shop about an hour before they closed. I just had to see it for myself. I love how colorful their desserts are -- lots of purples and yellows and oranges. I was able to snag the last donut, which happened to be mango. It was so delicious and gone within just a few bites. Great texture to have been out all day, too! I also wanted to try something new new, so I got the puto and kutsinta combo. Basically, they're colorful steamed rice cakes made into desserts... and they're dairy-free and vegan! Decided to try Gwenies pastries as i never had a filipino baked good before and i am a lover of baked goods. Everything was fresh and well stocked, the lady at the cash register even offered to bring more doughnuts from the back if there was anything we needed. I ordered a variety of items and try to get different flavors, my favorite item was the ube bun. I am never sure what ube is suppose to taste in baked good but this bun was delicious and i refused to share. I also really enjoyed the spanish bread, the one that I ordered had some type of crumble and filling inside. The dough in the doughnuts was delicious, but I am really not a big fan of filled donuts. I had pandan and nutella, it was a generous amount. First time trying pandan, is a very mild flavor so nothing to stay away from if you have never tried it before. I had a vanilla sylvana, it was very crunchy and sweet. It was a bit too sweet, but it could be that I had eaten too many pastries when i tried this item. I had the baked hopia with pork, the pork filling taste delicious but it does has eggs in it. I wasn't a fan of the pan de coco, the coconut was too sweet and while i liked the texture the flavor was not a very strong coconut flavor. I would go again and try some of their other items and defintely get more of that ube bun. read more

I was on the search for mooncakes and a friend had recommended Gwenie's Pastries. The thought of ube mooncakes was pulling my heart strings. When you order mooncakes, you get one ube and one red bean. They come two to a box and are the traditional small size. The only thing not small about them is the price. They were $27.50 for a box of two small cakes. I did the math, and that would mean that I would be paying $110 dollars for one small mooncake a piece for my immediate family. I thought that the price was too high, so I ordered donuts. I ordered ube, pandan, mango, and chocolate hazelnut spread flavors. They were delicious. We divided them up, so we could taste each flavor. The ube was my favorite. But, each of the flavors were yummy. We demolished our box of donuts. Service was very good. Our server was pleasant and helpful. They rearranged the store front and it was easier for customers to get around and look at all of the baked goods. Almost left the Rockville area without visiting Gwenie's but I had a sudden craving for halo halo on an unseasonably warm day. It's a short walk from Twinbrook Metro and well worth the visit! The store is very small with no seating but there's a bench outside where I ate my halo halo. Most people drive in to pick up their baked goods. The halo halo was larger than I expected. It comes in a bowl with ube shaved ice, fruit gelatins, a tiny cube of leche flan, some other sweets, and a sprinkling of corn flakes! Perfect on a warm sunny day! read more

We visited the pop up at the Mosaic Fall Festival and ordered the ube cheesecake and Pandan doughnut. The Pandan doughnut was perfectly fried and the cream inside was light and airy. My only complaint was that there wasn't much Pandan flavoring. As for the cheesecake, it was also light and airy, and not too sweet. The Nilla crust complemented the cream cheese well. Gwenie's, you've earned a loyal customer. The ube donut was life-changing! It reminds me of the malasadas (Portuguese donuts) in Hawaii. Each bite was heavenly - soft, pillowy dough filled with luscious and airy ube cream; I could eat a whole tray of these and not get sick of it. The flavors and textures were just perfection. The baked siopao was delicious, too. The meat was a bit too salty for me, but I loved the softness of the bread. The spanish bread was so good - the sweet filling reminded me of almond croissants, but with a fluffy bread, instead. The let downs were the ube cake and the ube cheese pan de sal. The cake was a tad too dry for me, although the flavor was good! The ube cheese pan de sal had a great texture, but the cheese filling was a too tangy/sour, and the ube filling was just ok. I will keep coming back to Gwenie's as long as they keep selling their delectable donuts! I'm excited to try their other treats, as well. Oh Gwenies, how I love you so. I first tried Gwenies several years ago as an offering at Kuya Ja's. I never knew that they had a storefront. In speaking with a coworker on Thursday about my search for filipino food, she tells me that Gwenie's is tucked away in an unsuspecting location off of Nebel road. I thought I was in the wrong place because it was very industrial warehousey looking, but alas! There was this hidden gem. Parking is kinda tight and I had to circle one good time before snagging a spot. The store itself is quite small, but I'm sure the kitchen is larger (in the back). There are two display cases, filled with all sorts of wonderful treats, as well as a shelving unit perpendicular to the cases. We popped in around 550p, right before they were set to close. Lots of goodies had been ransacked through, but I'm proud to say I snagged the last two slides of mango cake (because I felt like the lady behind might take em lol). I also ordered a slice of Ube pie, a slice of Ube cheesecake, a dozen pan de sal, and a puto & kinsata combo. That pie is what dreams are made of! This is what I've been chasing after for years. It's so good and creamy! 10 out of 10! I just tried the Ube cheesecake this evening. It was good but not as creamy as the pie cuz umm it's made with cream cheese, duh! But I'm obviously biased towards the pie. I think I want that for Mother's Day. Yup I'm gonna tell husband to get me that pie! My eldest had the mango cake. It was so moist and was very light/airy. The texture was perfect. That mango cream wasn't overly sweet. She loved it. The kutsinta are the brown cup looking things. They kinda tasted like a coffee jelly. Not bad. The puto (those purple, yellow and white puff looking things) are like spongy rice cakes. My daughter said they tasted the same even though they were different colors. Bland was her description. I didn't get to eat any because I didn't know the container needed to be refrigerated?? By day 2, there were moldy spores so I sadly had to toss those bad boys out I got a dozen pan de sal. I didn't see them when she bagged them because they were already in a brown bag. I meant to get the Ube cheese pan de sal but these were just as fine. They were really big! And soft and fluffy. I tried the ube pie. Definitely tasty and moist. I've had ube in different desserts before but the flavor was very subtle in the pie. I will say this location is about as unaesthetic as it gets and a small slice of pie is overpriced at $9. There are other local bakeries nearby where you can actually sit down and get a dessert for half the price on real dining ware. The cashier was kind enough to give us 4 free donuts since they were close to closing which was much appreciated. The ube cheesecake slice was decent. The donuts were all pretty good, I had them room temperature (cold) and warmed up which was ultimately better but both were still good, wish I could've had them fresh and warm which would likely have tasted the best. Introduced my friend to some Filipino desserts even though I'm no expert myself and I'm happy to hear they love it as much as I do! Gwenie's has recently added more hours as well. This is our go to place for ube desserts but was the first time we tried the ube cheese pal de sal. I've avoided it in the past because my uncultured mind thought "salt bread? Cheese? Jam?" After watching Bluey, I realized cheese and jam do go together (Brie and jam etc) and so I purchased one. Not much later, it was split 3 ways and gone before we reached the car. So I walked back in and bought 3 more. The cheese reminded me of a cheese danish filling and the ube jam inside complimented it just perfectly. The bread itself is not salt but is a soft, fluffy bread to protect and contain the sweet mixture. In the past (I could've sworn I've written review last before), we've enjoyed their halo halo (shaved ice), ube cheesecake, and ube pie. I personally enjoy the pie more than the cheesecake because I don't like mousse-like textures. Their crinkles bag only come with 3 crinkles, but even one will fill you up. The only thing stopping me from visiting frequently is the distance I have to travel. read more

I would love to visit this store in person one day. So far, I've only ordered from here online through Amazon a couple times last year, but the service and quality of the products were excellent. I've only tried the ube crinkle cookies so far, so that's all I can speak on, but they are amazing! Chewy and flavorful and almost like a brownie/ cookie in one in terms of richness and texture.
