Bob's Shanghai has been on a bunch of best dim sum lists but it's a pretty far drive for us. Luckily we were in the area so we placed an order for pickup online. We ordered an Egg and Cruller Wrap, Scallion Pancake, Pork & Rice Shumai, Chicken XLB, Pan Fried Pork Buns, and Cucumbers. Order was ready on time but know that since its was a Sunday so it took around 45 minutes due to how busy it was. We really liked the Pork & Rice Shumai and the Pan Fried Pork buns were our favorites. Both filled really well. The Chicken XLB (like most carryout dumplings) kind of exploded mostly so we didn't get the best experience there but the flavor was good. The egg cruller wrap was solid but doesn't travel well. The scallion pancake was a little thicker/breadier than I'm used to. Cucumbers were solid. This place definitely needs to be experienced dine in, especially based on how busy their dining room was that day. If you're in a rush though, their takeout is solid. read more

Bob's is still going strong, and I'm glad for it because there aren't enough good Chinese food places anymore. This time we got the carryout, Kung Pao Tofu, Crispy Beef, and Szechuan String Beans. As usual, each dish gave us exactly what we needed, exactly what we expected. The Kung Pao is my favorite flavor, with peanuts and plenty of peppers. I haven't been to Bob's in decades, mostly because Taiwanese food doesn't thrill me, the seasoning is too subtle. A friend recommended I check it out again, so I came for lunch. There are more Shanghai and spicy selections than I remember. The dining room hasn't changed much, fairly plain wood tables. I was greeted immediately and brought tea. There is a Shanghai Tapas menu and a main menu. I got the Shanghai Style Kimchi. It was cabbage with some hot peppers and a ginger dressing, refreshing and delicious. The hot and sour soup had a lot of tofu in it which I like. The pork and shrimp soup dumplings could have use more shrimp and some additional seasoning. The bill was $30 before tip. So why not just go to Peter Chang and get as many small plates as you can eat for $28? I really think restaurants should have lunch menus. read more

Hands down this is the best casual soup dumplings restaurant in DMV. You can see them making the soup dumplings in the window right when you walk in. The service was standard with courteous but prompt servers. We ordered all the soup dumpling varieties on the menu and they were all made with delicate skin and heart warming flavorful broth. Definitely will return on another cold day. In addition, we tried their General Bob's chicken, their version of the Americanized General Tsos, and it was crispy and not very spicy. The place itself does not have a ton of seating compared to how popular they are so there is a wait and all I got was an order a dumplings to go. While I waited for my order you can see through a glass window of people making the dumplings. The pork dumplings were very good, they could be the best I have had in the area. I questioned if the dumplings would hold up on the ride home but they were still hot even after the 20+ minute drive. The xiao long bao was delicious. The outside peel was a good thickness where it was not too thick and it was not too thin that it would break. Each soup dumpling had a decent amount of soup inside. The beef tendon and beef noodle soup was nice and spicy. The tendon was super soft and the beef was soft enough that my kids didn't have a hard time chewing. Dan dan noodle after a good mix was flavorful with a good spice. Will try the jaja mian and pork sauce noodles next. The pork and rice mushroom shumai was also of note. Bob's truly never misses on service and flavor. This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the DMV and I thoroughly enjoy my experience every time I come here. It is a little pricey, but the portion sizes are large. My favorite is coming with friends to order a bunch of dishes to share. Best XLB in the DMV by far-- so juicy, lots of pork, and perfect thickness of the dumpling wrapper. Szechuan green beans are always crispy, garlicky, spicy, and salty. I love their Singapore noodles, which highlight a curry flavor with salty and spicy notes on the backend. Unfortunately, I found the other dishes we ordered pretty badly underseasoned. I only tried Dim Sum, mainly the food was well-balance and savory, even though there are not many choices Dim Sim Menu but I can say they all are quality selection. The service was fast and smoothly. When you look from outside, the restaurant look like small and hide in the corner of the building, but after you get inside, it is plenty of space dining room and nice ambient. Shared a steamed veggie dumpling dish, salt and pepper tofu, dry noodles with scallion sauce and flounder filet Sichuan style. The dumplings had a soft tender skin and were stuffed generously with chopped bean thread, scallions, garlic, minced dry tofu and sesame oil. Was a great starting dish. The noodles with scallion sauce was hand pulled noodles tossed with fried scallions, soy braised egg, and soy sauce. Very simple but satisfying. The salt and pepper tofu had cubes of deep fried firm bean curd tossed with salt, pepper, flash fried basil, scallions and peppers. The cubes were not over fried, so they were crispy on the outside but still soft on the inside. The fish dish was filets in. Spicy stew with dried chilis, chili oil, peppercorns, mushrooms, bean sprouts and wide cellophane noodles. The spiciness of the last entree definitely balanced the mild flavors of the others. You have to get their soup dumpling NONE NEGOTIABLE! You'll thank you later. If you like spicy I recommend the don don noodles. Their scallion pancakes are crispy and yummy. They also have different dumpling such as pan fried and steamed which are also a hit. They have pork buns and all types of dim sum. Their veggies are cooked good and so are their entree meals. On a cold day (or whenever) I also recommend their wonton noodle soup with a side of chili sauce. These are sharable/ family style plates. So order a couple things off the menu and everyone enjoy . I came here with my girlfriend, and prior to visiting, I was very eager to dine based on all of the positive reviews on this site. We came on a Friday night, and had to wait about 30 minutes for seating. The dining area is basically wooden chairs and tables. Not much ambiance, but that's not why you come here. We ordered scallion pancakes, soup dumplings, eggplant with basil, and noodles with chicken. I never had scallion pancakes. Nothing I would order again. I have nothing to compare, but I assume they're good. The dumplings were fantastic. The eggplant, which comes in three varieties, appeared to be a popular item with other guests. I guess it was good. I'm not a fan of saucy food. The noodles were fantastic. I feel like we ordered wrong, although my girlfriend picked everything except the noodles. This is not a place to visit if you're looking to lose weight. The hard sugar in the eggplant alone was more than I consume in two months. I'm probably not in the best position to rate our dinner as I avoid carbs and sugar. If I were to come back, I'd stick the noodles and revisit the menu to see if there is a solid chicken option. Wow did this place know my socks off! We went on a Sunday but boy was this place FAR from being quiet. It was jam packed standing room only and there was an hour wait. But obviously we waited. We wanted our soup dumplings!! You can see how they hand make every soup dumpling while waiting, too. And we used the menu to mark off exactly which items we wanted. By the time we were called up, we just handed over our menu and our waitress confirmed our order...easy and efficient! We obviously got the pork soup dumplings and cucumber salad. Tried their soup dumpling and a couple other dishes and while they can season well / know how to cook, the ingredients they use aren't fresh. All of their meat had a pretty bad meaty/fishy smell. Marinated dishes could mask the smell well, soup dumplings unfortunately could not. That said, if you aren't picky about your meat, you probably won't be able to tell.. it's not THAT bad. Service was fast, servers very nice and accommodating. Wish I brought cash since it seemed like they give you a cash discount. We love authentic Chinese food and you can definitely get that here but the price is a little high for what you get. If you don't like a very loud eating environment this place isn't for you.
