Much has been said about LA Subs in the months that it has been open, and most all of it has been…read moregood. So, being a lover of new discoveries, and having a particular obsession with massive piles of yumminess on bread, I figured I should check out LA Subs in the Enfield Square and indulge in such things.
The Enfield Square (Mall) used to be a hoppin' place, with anchor stores galore. JC Penny, Macy's, Sears, etc., not to mention a variety of smaller retail shops like the infamous Chess King (where 90% of my 80's wardrobe was sourced!) and the beloved Orange Julius. Up until maybe a year or so ago it's basically been a giant covered porch for Target, but recently there have been other small businesses popping up, and a weekend craft vendor fair (as well as the movies which have remained), so some needed life has returned to the ol' bones of Enfield Square.
And now...LA Subs!
When I approached the shop, it was quiet, though oddly as soon as I decided what I wanted and placed an order, 3 random people showed up and started ordering food as well. I don't know if these are my "fans" or just paid actors meant to hype up new sub shops, but whoever they were, they only delayed my ordering by a minute or two, so all was good. I asked the owner, Illmi, what he recommended for my first time and it was an "Italian Combo," which I was sorta hoping for anyway. He sliced the meat in front of me, and then built the beautiful sub right in front of me, layer after layer of precious yummies, crafted with love, and then sliced the treat, displaying it for all the world to see, and lemme tell you it was a beaut, Clark!
I usually do my reviews out in my ridiculous sports car, and that's what I did with my Italian combo. Chowing down bite after delicious bite, covering myself in bits of lettuce, peppers, bread, and meaty whatnots, making an absolute mess...but loving every minute of it. The bread was fresh, the toppings were perfect--flavorful, abundant, and fresh as well. These types of sandwiches are always a bit sloppy, and this was no exception, but much of that has to do with me being a wee bit of a slob, of course. In no way does the messiness take away from the absolute delight of munching on this culinary home run. LOVED it!
LA Subs is in the Enfield Square, right next to the movie theater, so go check them out, say hello to Illmi, and let him know the Doofus in the Orange Porsche said hello!
