What we did not expect was outright discrimination in 21st-century America--especially from people who, historically, have often been on the receiving end of it. As soon as we walked in, the owner/manager/waiter (all the same person) looked at us and said--in Hong Kong-style Mandarin--"I ask you to consume somewhere else." At first, I didn't even process what he said. My wife understood immediately: we were not welcome here because we looked Asian. Keep in mind, this was an Asian buffet. Once I realized what was happening, I was furious and ready to call the police. My wife pulled me away, reminding me there was no point staying another second. I agreed--but decided that people need to know about this. This isn't only about food quality. It's about basic human decency. And this man has none. Bottom line: Use common sense and basic logic.
