I am a pizza snob. Grew up in North Jersey and spent a great deal of time in NYC. Lots of great pizza has been consumed. I worked my way through college making pizza. I know pizza a little bit :-) Pizzeria Mungo is the best Pizza in Richmond. Period. End of discussion. Mic Drop. Whatever... Two four seat tables inside. A few tables under umbrellas outside. They are really configured for takeout but can accommodate as detailed above. Super friendly and helpful staff. The place is immaculately clean. Pizza is all they have by the way. No sandwiches. No garlic knots or salads. PIZZA and it is on point. True thin crust NYC style pizza. The crust is a wonder. Thin, crisp, without being like a cracker, flavorful. a little bit of char around the edges. AS IT SHOULD BE. Fold-able but able to stand on its own with out the Brooklyn fold. It is NYC style. The right amount of cheese, a sauce that hits the right notes. Not sweet. Not acidic. Someone described it as spicy. I don't pick up on that but then I use hot sauce as salad dressing. There is simply no other place in Richmond that comes close to this pizza if NYC style is what you want. This pizza is on point. Oh yeah, there is a parking lot. Yay, a parking lot. Small establishment with about two tables and eight chairs total, so if you're just grabbing a quick slice by yourself or with a friend, you will have somewhere to sit. However, probably not the best setting for a family or large group. They have kiosk ordering which is nice, and I'm so happy they offer individual slices (they ask whether you'd prefer a plate or box which was nice). A whole pie will run you at least $28, but the slices are about $5 each on average. I ordered a slice of cheese, a slice of pepperoni, a side of house-made pesto, and a side of house-made ranch. After all that plus tax and tip, my total was $18. The pizza and sauces were definitely tasty but not worth the price. I love a delicious, thin, NY style pizza, and this almost hit the spot; I just wish their cheese was a little bit stronger and sharper. Came at 4 PM on a Saturday and even though they were moderately busy for the time of day, our two pizzas were ready in about 15 to 20 minutes. Although the pizza is a little on the pricey side, they are 18 inch pies and the quality is definitely worth the price. We got the ricotta classic ($28) and classic cheese ($22). New Yorkers / NY pizza snobs - this place is IT. Perfect crispy crust, bright sauce (well-seasoned/not sweet), high-quality cheese, and not too greasy or salty. Amazing well-balanced pizza perfection. Owner on site was super friendly and attentive...though I do love a grumpy NY pizzaiolo. Moved here a few months back after years in NY/LA and have been bummed at how weak the pizza game is here. Zorch has its moments but mostly in Carytown location. And not nearly as good in either shop. So...get out and support what is easily the best pizza in RVA! Hopefully this place gets huge and opens a shop out toward 288. Ordered takeout from Pizzeria Mongo. They were very busy on a Saturday night and with good reason, word around town is this is the place to go. Pizza was ready close to the time I was given. The crust was perfect for me. Crispy with the right amount of chewy. To me, the crust makes the pizza. The sauce was excellent as well. Probably could have used a little more cheese but this is personal preference as traditional NYC style tomato pies aren't loaded up with cheese. All said, it is a great pizza pie. read more

I'm give this a 4.3 rating. Tasted very good and ordered another pie for my mother to bring back to TN (they don't have good pizza by them). My mom also really enjoyed it. I had ordered take out and when I picked up, they have you inspect the pizza first to make sure it had everything you ordered. I love that idea! My only gripe was that there really wasn't much garlic on the pie. I personally don't love semolina flour on the crust, but that is purely a personal preference! Had our usual Friday lunch and this time chose Pizzeria Mungo. They serve a Nee York Style pizza (not to be confused with a Connecticut style pizza) and it was delicious! Crust was light and flaky and we chose the sausage and hot honey for the three of us. The owner is very nice and told us how he got in to the business. He was also able to cut the pizza into 9 separate and equal slices (something my friend John is still amazed with). We finished it off and very satisfied with our purchase. The place is a bit on the small side with only two tables inside and one small table outside. But the ambiance and the feel of a real pizzeria is all there. Walking to the bathroom, you see it's a little industrial but the bathroom itself is very clean and sanitary. What a great place, great pizza, and an even better owner!! Highly recommend!! read more

My pick for best pizza in RVA just changed! As others have noted, the pies here compare with the legendary joints in New Haven and NYC. Prices are high but justified and seating is limited. You can't beat it for takeout! Our only issue was that the delicious whole Carnivore my wife and I ordered took us three days to finish.
