Came here during a busy time during Labor Day weekend and we were seated quickly however the service has been absent at this point in the meal. The people at the end of the table have had their entire meal as I waited for my pizza. Pizza was good but not worth the price.
Pizzeria Toro is 5 stars and I'm insane for having rated it 4 stars before. The pizza is seriously so good. The crust is perfect, has a great char, and the toppings are drool worthy. Whenever I think of good pizza, my mind goes right here. We've come back multiple times since that first visit and while we've sampled some other pizzas, our top two are the Spicy Lamb Meatballs and the Soft Egg. Drizzle some of their fantastic chili oil on it as well and you are all set!
I ate here recently for the first time with my hubby, son, and brother. We all loved it! We arrived without a reservation on a Friday night, and had about a 25 minute wait. We were sat right in front of the kitchen, at the end of a shared table. We loved seeing all the different pizzas being made and how efficient the team worked. To start we had the ricotta dumplings and the kale salad. Both tasted fresh, unique, and delicious. We then shared the soft egg pizza, the brussels sprout pizza, and the pizza americana (cheese) for the little guy. We enjoyed all of them, especially the brussels sprout. An added bonus to sitting where we did is that the gentleman preparing the pizzas made an extra and offered it to us. We were stuffed so we declined, and he gave it to the kitchen staff, but it was nice of him to offer!
What I recommend: The potato pizza when it's in season Pizza Toro is one of the most creative pizza spots in Durham. They're not afraid to experiment, and that's what makes this place stand out. The menu changes with the seasons, and you'll often find unique options like the potato pizza with anchovies, which is my personal favorite when it's available. They also do great takes on classics like the old school and new school pepperoni. The service is quick, the staff is friendly, and the vibe is always solid. Some of the seasonal pizzas can be hit or miss, and a few run a little salty even for my taste, but when they get it right, it's some of the best pizza you'll find in the area. Pizza Toro is a spot worth visiting if you want something different, creative, and consistently interesting.
This is such a cute date or family night stop. The staff are so nice and attentive! We ordered pizzas and salads. It was amazing and filled with flavor. The chili oil is a nice touch. They do have seasonable menu but the standard pizzas are always available. There are enough parking spots around and in front of this place. If you are in Durham, do check that out.
This is the BEST vegan pizza I have ever had. Unlike many other pizza places which say they offer "vegan pizza" (which is really just a pizza with no cheese), Pizzaria Toro puts care and love into creating truly exceptional, unique, and delicious vegan pizzas. They only have one vegan pizza offered at a time (though of course you can create your own), but they change it every few months, which gives us a good incentive to return. And I am always blown away by the creativity (and the deliciousness) of what they put together. This is NOT just some limp mushrooms & green onions! No. They had an eggplant one with some kind of incredible, savory sauce on it (wow, still think about that one), they had another one with squash on it (and also, another delicious sauce). One time they did a pizza which had some unusual green on it (which was kind of bitter. that one wasn't my favorite). Regardless, it is ALWAYS worth your time and your money! You will get something unique and delicious! The service is pretty fast, in my opinion, and the inside is cute. But the main problem with Pizza Toro is that they are so so busy that it can be hard to get seating. And when you are seated, they will sit you on one long table with multiple parties (which isn't awful, but definitely unusual). Finally, when it gets super busy (which is most nights, and especially weekends), it can be pretty loud in there, in the point where it was hard to hear what my partner was saying. Thankfully, there's an easy solution to this. My partner and I have gotten into the habit of ordering our pizza to go (ahead of time), and then picking it up and sitting outside in the public patio area to eat. Just across the street from Toro there is a small paved patio area which has multiple tables and chairs. If those are full, you can walk down to the left about a block and you'll come to another outside seating area (near where that ice cream stop is). Very convenient! Overall, highly, highly recommend. I check their online menu regularly to see when it changes so I can plan when to go next :)
Came here after a work event. We came around 8pm on a Monday and this place was busy! Thankfully, it was just two of us so we were sat quickly. They have some individual tables but mostly communal tables where you could be sat with other groups. We started off with a Bellini each. Blood orange and champagne. It was cool and delicious. Perfect contrast to the extreme heat we've been having. We loved it so much we had two. The Bellinis are $13 each. Now, to the most important part - the pizza. I ordered the mushroom pizza and my friend ordered the vegan pizza. We were in no rush, which worked out because it took a bit for our pizza to come out. No problem - that's where their delicious drinks come in handy. This is definitely a place to sit and enjoy with friends. I can definitely say the pizza was well worth the wait. Hands down the best pizza I have ever had. The perfect amount of oil to make the pizza soft but not greasy. If you love mushrooms, you know you can't go wrong. The pizza is large if you're thinking about it as one pizza per person, which I would definitely encourage getting your own. $21 for the pizza, which I believe it is absolutely worth it. In short, come in and relax. Expect to slow down so make it into an enjoyable visit with some extra drinks and apps. Revel in the delicious pizza you'll get to devour.
There's so much to say about Toro but it would be a book. This place is an essential for anyone living nearby and any and all visitors to Durham, heck to North Carolina even. Their pizza is always fresh, wood fired right in front of you in a ginormous oven, and it's guaranteed to tickle your taste buds. I always rotate when coming here but are always intrigued about their special. I also always always get their kale salad. It has pine nuts, Parmesan, and calebrean peppers in it. So so so so so good. I could eat that everyday if I could. A waiter once wrote down the recipe on a Toro postcard for us, which was so very kind. The service overall is always on point, though it does get a bit crowded and a bit hard to hear, since it's a relatively small space - but that's what makes Toro so special. Enjoy!
Excellent pizza! I stopped in for dinner on a cold dark wintry night in Durham. Inside was warmth and light and happiness! I sat next to the smoking hot pizza oven. The pizza chef used his long handled pole to arrange the pizzas on the smoking hot oven with orange glowing wood in the back. I had a phenomenal sweet sausage pizza with peppers and fennel. The thin crispy crust was delicious! Service was very good. The place was crowded and loud and fun!
Came here on a Monday night and it was surprisingly busy. We were a party of two and we still had to wait like 20-25 mins. They also seat you at a table with other parties. You're not necessarily cramped but you do sit quite close to others which may or may not be somewhat awkward but whatever. We got the burrata to share. I felt like the bread it came with was much too salty but my friend really enjoyed the saltiness so I guess that is a variable opinion. The sauce that it came with was kind of...unexpected. It was like spinach-y but thin, maybe with oil of some sort? I kind of have mixed opinons on how I feel about it. Probably would not order again but it was alright. The cheese itself was good. I got the pizza with the fennel sausage which I felt was decently yummy. My friend got the one with the lamb meatballs and I'm not sure what sort of cheese was on it but it had a very strong cheesy, almost smoky flavor. I think overall, the meal was decent but also not particularly impressive. I guess there is only so much you can do with pizza. If you are a big fan of pizza, I'm sure this will be quite a good experience but as for me, I felt like it was good pizza but not anything to rave about in particular.
Best pizza we have had since returning from Rome. We had the seasonal special, white pizza with asparagus and prosciutto and it was fantastic. Don't miss the kale salad, the flavors were wonderful. Not a huge fan of the ricotta dumplings but they were ok, but the rhubarb crostini was delicious! Great cocktails too. Can't wait to go back!
Tipping on Takeout?? Maybe they were mad that I didn't tip on a take out order where I'd already spent $79 on three of their moderately sized pizzas, so they planted a hair out of revenge!!!! Who knows?? Maybe someone was stressed and the hair just fell gently on the pie during the three second window between when the sauce was poured and the cheese was spread as a wisp of cold air blew threw the front door as someone else picked up a take out order?? Who knows?? I have to preface this review by saying that I'm not a fan of pizzeria toro. I don't think you get bang for your buck on any of their pizzas, but hey, my wife really likes them so I bite the bullet sometimes. To each their own. My favorite things about pizzeria toro are the chili oil, which is not included in a standard order and also that you don't feel bloated after you eat their pizza, kudos. If you do pay for chili oil you get a minuscule portion that covers one slice. Again not worth whatever you pay for it. IMO, they should add a little more salt, msg, or oregano to the sauce to add depth. Cook is inconsistent on bake. It is what it is... Back to the disappointment. We found a 6 inch hair in our buffalo mozzarella pizza. Thankfully it wasn't one of those nasty finds where you choke as the hair clings to the back of your throat, or the hair slides as you bite the tip of the pizza and the hair stretches between the piece in your mouth and your hand... No, we weren't that fortunate, the cheese skid off the slice when we pulled it and the hair was on the dough staring at us. See the picture below. You can see the hair between the slice and lettering on the box. Anyway, we called and asked for a refund on the buffalo mozzarella pizza. The M.O.D offered to refund or recook the pizza for us to pick up. We weren't trying to go back out in the cold and opted for the refund. He stated we would get a text confirming the refund on the pizza, it never came. No biggie. We know pizzeria toro doesn't need our business, they're a staple in Durham and have their cult following. They could at least honor their word, for what it's worth. Our dinner was ruined and everyone checked the other two pizzas diligently to make sure each slice was clear. We scrapped the buffalo mozzarella pizza. So it goes. The best thing about this is that I won't have to eat here for a while since my wife got the ick. Thanks pizzeria toro!!! Haha
This spot was 10/10!! The sausage pizza was delicious and the crust was perfectly fluffy and crispy. The tomato sauce was fresh and robust. Ambiance was great and you could see the beautiful pizza ovens in the back! Service was great as the staff was very attentive and knowledgeable.

Absolutely delicious and some of the best pizza I've had. We were only in town for the weekend, and we went two days in a row for lunch because it was so good! Highly recommend the plum soda as well. Very quick service and cool vibe. read more

This is one of our favorite pizza spots in the Triangle! The space is small, the restaurant is popular so be prepared to sit close to others. They have one of the best salads...make sure you order the Kale Salad. In terms of pizza, our favorite pizzas are the spicy lamb meatball pizza and the sweet fennel sausage. Pro tip, ask for the chili oil to drizzle on top of your pizza or as a dip on the side. If you are not full after all the delicious pizza, save room for the zeppole for dessert! They are essentially Italian churro balls. It does take extra time to prepare so order ahead. read more
Atmosphere: Pizzeria Toro is a cute but tiny restaurant. There is very limited seating, but once inside, the ambience is great and you can see your pizza being made in their giant oven. Service: Luckily, we went at an off-hour at around 2:30pm, so we did not have to wait for seating. When we've passed by Pizzeria Toro in the past at around dinner time, they always seem to be completely full. The pizza itself takes a bit long to make since they make it fresh in their wood-fired oven. Food: We ordered the Lex's Favorite Bacon and Sweet Fennel Sausage Pizzas. The Lex's Favorite Bacon Pizza was topped with bacon, bechamel, red onion, arugula, and grana. We loved how generous they were with the arugula, as this allowed for each bite of pizza to be accompanied with a refreshing crunch. The bacon and red onions went well together, and the white sauce gave the pizza a lighter taste compared to a heavier red sauce. The Sweet Fennel Sausage had a great balance of flavors, and the sausage, peppers, cheese, and sauce all complemented each other so well. The sausage was the best part and had a nice, mellow sweetness along with a salty bite to it. The crust also had a great crunch and was flavorful, especially when paired with their chili oil. Overall: Pizzeria Toro served us some amazing wood-fired pizzas, and we can't believe we waited this long to try their food. We enjoyed their unique pizzas and would come back to try some of their other offerings in the future if we can get a table at the busy restaurant! read more
Came here with the family to enjoy some fresh pizza and we loved the menu options! We started off with the crispy pig ears and they were very tasty! A good appetizer overall. I recommend eating it with the sauce and fruits because they go so well together. Definitely a dish you should try if you have never had pig ears before. The pizzas were all really good. My favorite was the sweet fennel sausage red pizza because I found the peppers to be very savory. Next up was the chanterelle mushroom which was super good with its fior di latte cheese. Sprinkle on red pepper or a dash of the spicy oil for a delicious kick! Also, can't go wrong with the smoky bacon with spicy jalapenos. Took off a star because 1. our individual plates were dirty and we had to wait for new ones after our appetizer was served and 2. we had to keep looking for our servor and ended up asking someone else for our needs. read more

I was only in town for two days and no fewer than three people told me I needed to try this pizza place. My Airbnb host even said she wasn't a huge pizza fan but it's fantastic and they patron the restaurant regularly. It was a Sunday night. Full but not a long wait. I skipped all that and sat at the bar. I had a pizza to myself with jalapenos and bacon. It was what I assume to be a pretty standard medium pizza that could easily feed two people. I ate the ENTIRE THING. Almost without realizing it because it was so good. I got the wine that was on special that night from Italy. I can't remember exactly what it was but it had a bit of a kick like a Carmenere or Malbec (I say this but then I had a picture of the bottle. My memory likes to keep me on my toes). So so good. Chatted with a couple bartenders and a couple different guests at the bar. I never felt rushed, like I was waiting too long, or awkward in any way. This truly was a great experience and I highly recommend. A note: I was visiting from Seattle. Something about this place felt...familiar... come to find out after talking with the bartender more that this is closely related to Serious Pie (another pizza place) in Seattle! *There is a lot of outrage/low ratings from Yelpers who seem to take offense to being auto charged 20% as part of the restaurant's fair wages initiative (even though they do NOT ask for additional tip on top of this and the food is fairly priced). Don't let these ratings convince you to pass on Pizzeria Toro because this place has incredible pizza + great vibes inside. I regret almost listening to those reviews. 5/5 pizzas: we got 1 red sauce pizza (prosciutto with olives) and 1 white sauce (cremini mushrooms with garlic), and this was a heavenly combo. While these are "thin crust" pizzas, the crust had a good amount of bite and the pizza slices were not too dough-y either. These aren't pizzas with hella toppings, but the few they have harmonize so well. You can tell there was thought behind these topping pairings. 5/5 crispy pork ears*: this is not for everyone, especially if you're averse to strange textures. My sister thought the pork ears were too "wiggly" but loved the sauce it came in. I personally liked the contrast between the wiggliness and fried crunch. They balance it with the acidity from the (divine) fruit sauce (an assortment of reduced grapes, cherries, etc). 5/5 ambiance: in the center of the restaurant, there's a massive pizza oven so you get the see the open kitchen in action. It's dim lighting which is great for low key date night or any get togethers, really. It can be a bit loud though. 4/5 service: the place can get crowded and is understaffed, so it can be hard to get someone's attention if you need something. But once you have it, the staff is kind and has great banter. read more
What a good choice today. I have been, but not in a long time. We got here at ~ 1145 Sunday, light traffic, but eager and energetic staff. I love the smell of the wood, and the open kitchen, featuring the pizza oven. The tables are simple and inviting for either a couple, or larger parties. We had 4 people, two littler ones and us. I think the pizza menu was a bit daunting for our 7 year old girl, but the results say everything. She ate nearly half her pizza. Not a huge feat for one, as all pizzas are about enough to feed one hungry adult. That is perhaps the best part, though, because you get to try 4 pizzas!! Spicy meatball and kale, prosciutto and olive, venison sausage, and just cheese. OMG Let's just say this, when is the last time you ate all the crust, or any crust. This is not just a delivery part of the pizza, but the last delicious bite. Our server was awesome, and upon him clearing the plates, there was one last piece of crust left on there. I told him I wanted it, and he laughed. Funny, but my favorite bite of th meal, because with just the crispy bit of crust left with a bit of olive oil, I tasted the rosemary in the crust that was awesome. Loved it. Thx Joel! I'm back baby! 10/13/2019. Started with prosciutto and a hazy ipa... now the waiting game. I'm getting the spicy lamb meatball and kale. Don't forget the chili oil! Back again baby! 11/15/2019. One of my favorite pizza places! I love a thin crisp crust and Pizzeria Toro delivers every time. We had the fennel sausage with roasted peppers and provolone cheese and it made my night. I paired it with a Wicked Weed Pilsner and it was just right. Food: Great flavors, fresh, and I always split my pizza with someone and leave full. Menu has some quirky but sounded good type of items like venison, duck gizzards, etc. Also more mainstream items, I like that they have items for the more adventurous palate . Bathrooms: Clean, great hand soap and dryers (come on, you know that's a plus). Prices: I think an $18 dollar incredible pizza that I am splitting with someone is reasonable. First off, the pizza is amazing. The crust is perfect and the flavors are balanced. They also have a lovely chili oil that gave the pizza a great slight spice. Some of the best pizza I've had! The service was lovely and my water cup was nearly never empty (and I chug water). The only reason this isn't 5 stars is the restaurant was extremely loud. I had to yell for my friend to hear me and I could barely hear myself think. I'm not sure if it's because there's so many people in a small space or the walls just bounce sound like crazy, but I definitely wouldn't bring a first date here. read more

Great pizza, fun service and an amazing dessert! This is a small physical location, it was busy but not totally packed. There is a very cool long table where groups can mingle and then high tops along the side. The kitchen is open so you can watch them making the pizza in the big oven. This is wood fired, Naples Italy style pizza with the bubbly delicious crust. I ordered the margherita pizza with a lite tomato sauce. It was so good, everyone enjoyed a piece and agreed it was one of the best pizzas. Hubby and son had the special of the day which they said was delicious, we ate a lot of pizza! We couldn't resist and ordered the Zeppole (donuts)for dessert. They come out hot with chocolate and vanilla custard sauce. So good, they were gone in a flash and we honestly considered eating the rest of the sauce with a spoon! The tables are a little close so be prepared to sit close. Actually it worked out well for the folks who sat down after us, at the next table. They ordered the special of the day because it looked so good and we told them it was delicious! And then they ordered the dessert too because they could hear us moaning with delight over them! read more

When reading through all of the Yelp reviews, the one I can say describes Pizzeria Toro the best, would be Yelp Elite, Ron's. That is probably the best description overall, but I'll add my own excerpts to it. FOOD: Clam pizza and local craft beer (can't remember from where but it was a lager). I mean, the food is good, but would I claim this to be the best pizza ever? I can't. It's hipster pizza with bourgeois flare. I met up with Yelp Elite, Ravi, to try this place out for the first time, 2 days after Christmas, on a Tuesday, and the place was packed with a 30 min wait and it seemed like everyone dining inside were wearing their best attire they recently aquired from Saks or Niemann or Vineyard Vines. I was in a new collegiate hoodie with jeans and felt very underdressed...at a pizza place!! They accept no reservations, do not take call ahead seating, and it's a roll of dice as to how long you'll wait due to the extremely limited space inside. When you're seated, you will value what table real estate you have because there isn't much to work with. If you're thinking of having your phone, keys, or anything else on that table with your food and drinks, believe me... you won't have it. Each table maximizes the small space inside by giving you JUUUUUUUST enough room to get to your seat with limited wiggle room. You will hear every conversation coming from your dining neighbors, too, since they will be less than an arm's length away from you. As for the pizza...I enjoyed the clams on it. I mean, I'm sorry but this is not a pizza spot I can enjoy and is stupid expensive for what you get. The service was fine, with no long waits or follow ups but when your invoice reaches the table, be sure to read it. An automatic 20% tip is added to your bill and then...the tax is added. So, you're paying tax on the tip, too. Should be some shame in this and if anyone would like to see the calculated proof, feel free to ask Ravi. He'll confirm it also. That's bushleague greed. In addition, if you want to customize any pizza, be prepared for a $2.00 customization charge. OVERALL SCORE: I'm gonna be nice and give PT 3 Stars just because the food wasn't awful and the service was acceptable. But also, it wasn't exceptional. To me, it's a rich person's pizza parlor to experiment with wild ingredients and see who can outdress who in the Elite club. That's exactly how I felt. It's tiny and cramped. It's loud, and it's much more expensive than a local restaurant that excels in pizzas and pastas. Not my thing, guys. Sorry. read more
Excellent pizza. My husband and I popped in on a Saturday night around 7:00 for dinner but there was a 30-minute wait, so we hit the bar. I got a Bellini, which was good, and my husband really liked his beer (Trophy Brewing IPA). The service at the bar was great and after we finished our drinks we went back to the front of the restaurant to wait out our reservation. We were seated at the community table about five minutes later, closest to the kitchen and wood fired oven. It was fun watching the staff form the dough, make the pizzas, and cook them in the oven. I ordered the San Marzano tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella (essentially a margherita) and my husband ordered the sweet fennel sausage, roasted peppers, and provolone. They drizzle olive oil over the top of the pizzas and sprinkle with sea salt, which was an extra touch I loved. The pizzas are filling but won't weigh you down, and are comparable to those I have had in Italy. An adult can definitely finish an entire pizza to themselves if they are hungry. There have only been a few times in my life when something happens and right then and there I know I'll never forget that moment. That happened tonight when I ate the fried eggplant, garlic, ricotta, grana pizza. Tonight ended up being very special. I chose it because everything else I had bookmarked in Durham was not open on Monday. Which, to be fair, is a pretty low-traffic day for most businesses. Here, though the takeout business was thriving, with at least a half dozen people leaving before I got my pizza, which came out a few minutes later than the confirmation said it would. I wasn't overly begrudged about the wait; I wanted to be there so I could get a piping hot pizza the minute it came out. It's the kind of pizza you want to eat fresh, and despite the cold I went across the street where some chairs and tables were set up in a makeshift park and quickly dove in. The portion size on this meal was unimpressive. Even though the Neopolitan-type pies do tend to be light meals for one person, I've seen plenty that were more substantial than this one. However, the taste was excellent, with the richness of buffalo mozzarella shining through, as well as some unexpected oregano. The mozzarella is stored in water, so it is a soggy pizza by design, all the more reason to eat it fast. I added some suppli (fried rice balls filled with cheese and mushrooms) and a kale salad. My conclusion for these was much the same: not a ton of food, even compared to similar restaurants I've tried elsewhere, but tasty stuff. Fried rice balls can't not be satisfying. Kale, on the other hand, can easily be quite unpleasant if not prepared well, but the cheese and chili marinade it came in brought it to a perfect texture. Close to $50 with tip for what generously might make two small meals. And I do still tip despite the fact that there isn't much actual service or ambiance at this takeout-only restaurant. My credentials as a person supporting small business during this difficult era are pretty substantial, but this was pushing my limits. Having said that, they were open when others weren't and they produced quality food with premium ingredients. read more
