My coworker was craving pizza by the slice and I suggested coming here, I have been before but it's probably been years since I visited as I bought a house on the other side of Durham. The young lady the was working greeted us as we walked in and was pleasant. My friend and I opted for the 2 slice pizza and a drink combo, although I was glad to see they offered a slice, side salad and drink combo as well. There were a variety of slice options to choose from and I ended up with the Sicilian and the bbq chicken, both of which I really enjoyed! I thought they were reasonably priced. On 11/30/25 I experienced clear racial bias at this location. I was the first customer waiting at the counter standing directly in front of the pizzas to choose my slice while one cashier assisted another customer. A second cashier came out and completely skipped over me to take the order of a white male who walked in after me. The woman standing next to him smirked, fully acknowledging what happened. No one from the staff apologized or corrected the situation. The only person who apologized was the customer who knew he came in after me. This was a blatant example of racial bias and discriminatory service, and it's exactly why I will not return to this restaurant. Respectfully black girl with the Afro who just left the restaurant. A customer describing a firsthand experience should not be called "ridiculous," "imagining things," or told to "eat somewhere else." We had a relatively complex order (one regular special pizza and one with a few mods). They nailed the mods perfectly and without questions. Stellar service especially for a take out order. Food was packed very well and the taste was incredible. Very well cooked and the crust's flavor was awesome! Only issue which is probably from a no cheese request is the crust god quite soggy on the veggie pizza. I cooked it a bit more at home and had no issues afterwards though. read more

This review is specifically due to lack of following covid protocols. I called in an order for pickup, and when I walked in multiple staff preparing food had masks pulled down under their chins. I can't imagine how hot it must be wearing masks while cooking, but masks are currently required indoors in Durham. I really want to support restaurants during these crazy times, but unfortunately I don't think I'll be returning to Tomato Jake's until we are in safer times. I've been to Tomato Jake's near Southpoint in Durham a few times over the years, but I have never written a Yelp review for them so I am taking care of that now. : -) I stopped by for some dinner recently and ordered two pepperoni slices with a drink and a house salad. The price came out to around $15.50 before the tip. The slices were big and full of pepperoni (they use big pepperoni). Also a lot of cheese. The slices were good, but very greasy as you can imagine. (If Dave Portnoy of One bite pizza reviews were reviewing he would say too much grease and a lot of flop). I would rate their slices below Randy's in the area, but they were good. The salad was good, also but maybe they could have given a little more dressing. I would stop by Tomato Jake's again, but probably for lunch. It is with regret that we write this review. We ordered a spicy clucker pizza and order of wings at a cost of $58.00. When we sat down to eat we noticed the order of wings was not what we ordered. We called the restaurant and reported the error. We asked them to replace the wings. We were told that company policy is not to remake an order and instead to refund the total of $58.00. After several calls and talking to 2 ladies and 2 men, we got no satisfaction. We were told that the owner agreed to give us a check for the money. When we called today to pick up the check was told the owner will give us cash but not a full refund. It is hurtful because we are very regular customers. No consideration for our inconvenience and the false information over a 5 day period of seeking what we were promised. After years of driving by and saying that I would try this "sometime," I finally went! And boy, I am so glad I did! It's tough to find gluten-free pizza that's decent, both in taste and in price, but Tomato Jake's knocks it out of the park! A good friend of mine has Celiac's, so we have to be pretty careful, so we were wonderfully surprised with the care, attention, and knowledge Jake showed. After chatting with him for a bit, we found out that he's been offering gluten-free crust options for about 12 years because he has a family member with Celiac's. And they're from a local bakery--win-win! Gluten-free options come in both 10" and 14", so splitting a pizza is definitely an option! The pizza was really good - the dough was chewy, the sauce was bursting with flavor and not watery at all (I hear they make this in house), and the fresh melty mozzarella was delicious. I just think $15 for a 10" pizza is overpriced, and would rather buy single slices next time. The calzone was a much bigger portion size, dough was just as good and I loved the roasted pepper filling :) I also sprinkled some Parmesan and chili flakes for an extra kick. I have celiac disease and cannot have wheat. Positives: 14" pizza crust. Second, I originally ordered cheese fries and noted if the cheese was not GF to please sub regular fries. Tomato Jake's is conveniently located in the Southpoint area, near the Southpoint mall and right next to a Target. There is plenty of parking in the area. The restaurant is now offering curbside pickup. Most recently, we ordered our food online on the restaurant's website and picked up curbside. We then received a call from the restaurant saying one of the slices that we ordered was not available (in fact, many of the options listed online were not actually available) and so I had to select a replacement. I was not offered a discount. For this reason, it is advisable to order by phone so that you know which items they actually have available. Our food was ready at the selected pickup time. Once I arrived at the restaurant, I parked directly in front and called in. A staff member delivered my order within a minute or two; she dropped it in my backseat through an open window so we had no direct contact. Our experience with the food with subpar: - knuckles (garlic knots): These were far too oily to be enjoyable. The garlic flavor was not very strong. - cheese slice with mushrooms: Again, very oily. Not much else stands out. - sicilian pizza - Really good. Thick, tasty crust. Not nearly as oily as the other two items that we ordered. I would order this again. Absolutely do not order their wings. My husband and I ordered wings and pizza for dine in on 12/17. They were really nice about letting me sample a sauce and gave us two separate sauce cups for our wing preferences. The sauces were good. However, we ate the wings while waiting for the pizza, only to discover that about half of them were bloody and undercooked on the inside. I LOVE this place. The staff are some of nicest and most genuine people you will ever meet. They always give extra dressings free of charge and offer plates, napkins, or whatever you may need for to-go orders. Some of the staff even have my order memorized!! We got the "Bigga Pizza" and the cooks were super nice because there was only one slice left and we wanted another one...so he made one up so quickly with no problem! It's in a nice plaza close to Target, Southpoint Mall, AMC, PetCo, Kirkland, etc. Only reason I'm giving it at 4/5 is because of the cashier. We have pizza every Friday night as a tradition my husband brought to us from his childhood so we are always trying new pizza options. We had been to Tomato Jake's in the past a couple times - I had their Sicilian which was delicious and my husband always enjoys their pepperoni. This review is specifically for the gluten free pizza, though. I don't have Celiacs, so I can't speak to any contamination but I have an autoimmune condition that sometimes benefits from cutting out gluten for awhile. It's hard to sustain along with being a vegetarian but I do it as often as I can. The hardest thing to find is decent gluten-free pizza! Don't bother with trying chain gluten-free pizza (I've done it and it's awful), but definitely give Tomato Jake's a try! I had it yesterday for the first time and would say it's one of the better ones out there (maybe 2nd in the area?) and actually feels like you're eating pizza and not cardboard. While cauliflower crusts can be delicious sometimes it doesn't cut it for a pizza craving. I got plain cheese to get a full sense of the crust and I will definitely be getting this on my gluten free pizza Fridays. read more
