Outstanding service! Five stars isn't enough stars to rate the excellence of this store! I have been looking for an electric assist bike online, but buying it online loses the customer service feeling and puts small business owners out of business. So I began searching local areas. Thanks to Google Maps we found Plaines in Pittsfield and the fist bike we saw walking into the store was the most update electric assist bike made by s subsidiary of Trek which is the Electra Townie Go! 8i. We were so happy with the customer service we received from Claudia and Keagan that we bought two bikes. My husband and I are in our fifties and in all our years with all the purchases we have made, I can honestly say that no one has topped the service we received here. Blaine's has a huge selection of bikes (to purchase or rent) along with an array of other outdoor activity equipment. It's a bright, clean, organized store with a welcoming feeling. We were a bit disappointed in our new E bikes we got online. We should've gone to Plaines for them because when we took them there to get them adjusted and to get a car rack for them, We once again experienced great service both downstairs with Jake and upstairs with Claudia. We could've gotten a trade-in for old bikes. It does pay to utilize the local businesses. That way, they are there when we need them. My Experience (Scroll to the bottom for the overall impression): I grew up in the 413 and spent a large chunk of my life here. Over the years I've bought everything from bikes to helmets to snowboard gear to service from my bike for them. I think my parents were doing business with them when I was into BMX and I ended up getting a Mongoose some time in the 80's. I'm about to ride across the USA, from Massachusetts to Southern California to Portland (~5,000 miles). Then I'm taking a month off. Then I'm off to New Zealand to bike the South Island. As you can imagine, I have some very specific needs. I'm visiting family here in Western Mass and was calling around looking for a kickstand. Claudia, the manager/owner answered the phone and was immediately pretty curt with me. I explained to her that I was looking for kickstands and calling around to see what people had. She immediately tried to brush me off, told me they had kickstands downstairs in the shop and tried to hang up on me. I told her to wait, that it wasn't just the standard kickstand I was looking for. She sounded flustered and passed me on to Nick (Bike Tech...hope I got your name right) downstairs. Nick was absolutely great. I told him I'd need a stand that could hold up to 100lbs with all my touring gear, and he said he had a Greenfield stand (well-made USA brand) that would attach near my rear dropouts. I checked online to make sure it would work for my bike, which it looked like it would, and proceeded to ride the over 5 miles one-way through horrible traffic in Pittsfield and Lenox (my choices being either Route 7 or Holmes Road, both very busy) to get the kickstand. I only mention this because Claudia made the assumption that it would be a breeze to just swing on over and who cares what I needed, I could find out when I got there. That is not the case: I only have a bike and I need to know that you've got what I need before I get there. When I arrived, Nick was working away on a bike. I recognized his voice, told him I was the one that called, and within about 5 minutes we had the new kickstand on and it worked great! I went upstairs to pay Claudia for the stand/labor and once again she really seemed like she didn't want to deal with me. Although there were no other customers in the store, she certainly didn't seem interested in selling anything to me (although I was asking about shoes and mirrors, a possible $200 sale on a dead-day) and took my money for the stand. I later realized, after biking into Price Chopper near Guido's on Rte. 7 that she had charged me for the basic kickstand, not the more expensive touring stand. Perhaps a little bit of karma coming back? I wasn't going to ride another 8 miles through horrible construction on Rte 7 to fix her mistake, but it fit with her lack of engagement with I, the customer. Overall: I give the customer service a 2 and the shop experience a 5. The poor attitude and lack of interest was very apparent. They've been voted the best shop because there isn't much else for competition out there and Pittsfield isn't a very bike-friendly town. I've met the head of the shop Tom before, and he seemed very knowledgeable, but it's been years so I can't give you any more info than that. Still, if you need things fixed, they have always had decent techs and will do things up right. Their selection isn't amazing, stocking the mostly expensive (but nice) Cannondale brand, with a slim choice of shoes and a good selection of helmets (currently). The Arcadian Shop has a better selection overall (shoes, helmets, bikes, accessories), but they are equally or more pricy. read more

Great experience ordering my first new bike offline and picking it up in store. It was a rad 2017 model bike and the price was discounted about $50-100 less than MSRP. Best deal in my area and it was worth the drive. They called to confirm that I intended to order from them instead of another bike shop with a similar name. I appreciated that follow-up. When I picked up the bike an employee gave me an overview of a few things on the bike, the warranty, and the store's lifetime tune-up policy. They are definitely my go-to shop for any future bike purchase as long as I live in driving distance of their shop. read more

I was at plaine's Bike and ski just today. I will be in the market for a new hybrid bike. I have a 1999 Trek 830. I spoke for at least 20 minutes to Jake. He was very knowledgeable, outgoing, and willing to answer all of my questions. I will be going back to purchase a new hybrid bike. I also had my present Trek worked on there, I needed a rear gear pack, they really worked with me, this is my every day commuter (accept for winter). read more

My recent purchase for my son's new bike at Plaine's went great. We had done some homework ahead of time narrowed down our choice to a few manufacturers/models which helped. Jake was very good at explaining all the slight differences between similar models we were looking at. He asked questions about the style of riding my son would do and pointed us into the direction of a great model for his size and ability. Took my board in to get waxed. They seemed very nice but my board got beat up. They must have clamped my bindings down when they waxed instead of my board because they cut up my bindings from securing them. Didn't noticed till after I left. They didn't care about my property. I had to adjust all my brackets to my bindings cuz they moved all of them to wax my board. Very unprofessional. I pay 10.00 to get a wax job and they tore up my bindings for free......be careful if you have nice things. If you don't care about your stuff, go here. read more

Yesterday I was out for a 43 mile bike ride from Stephentown, NY to Pittsfield and back with over 2600' of elevation gain. Going up my first hill, one of my gears got squirrelly -- it would try to switch out of that gear on its own. It was one of the lower gears, which I would need for the best riding up these Taconic hills. I charged ahead, thinking that since my route took me near Plaine's, I'd stop in there to get a quick fix. That had happened before on the same route few years ago, when my friend's clipless pedal busted, so we went over to Plaine's. The wrenches (that's slang for a bike repair person) jumped right on it and installed new pedals on my friend's bike and we got back on the ride and caught up with our group at Onota Lake (Burbank Park), our lunch spot. So I rode into the repair shop on the ground floor, and Jared immediately took a look. Just a bent derailleur hanger. He bent it back, and then went through all the gears, they all switched over from one to the other smoothly. I was good to go! I asked him what I owed, he said, "no charge." Of course, I said thank you and have a great day. And I thought to myself, I will write up a review because the repair shop here deserves it. They do great work. I won't comment on the gear shop, as I have only bought bike tire tubes and a coin shaped battery for my bike computer there. read more

I bought my first bike at Plaine's Bike and Ski shop in Pittsfield a few years ago when I lived in Chicopee, Massachusetts. I have since moved to Allentown, PA. Needing another (and different) kind of bike I drove all the way back to MA to make my new purchase at Plaine's. This says it all, but I will add that I knew I would receive excellent service from knowledgable sales persons and technicians. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Service was really strange. Had both my road and mountain bikes in for service here before with great results, not really sure what happened this time. Bought in my mountain bike for basic service plus all new cables, new rear shifter, rear brake work, and lower crank arm was loose and grinding and tires were flat. I dropped off the bike on a Sunday afternoon and was met by an enthusiastic young service tech who spent about 20 min going over the issues with the bike and then some. There was also another gentleman there who looked at it as well and gave his input. I asked if I could get the bike back by Friday at the latest because of an outing with the bike for Saturday and that didn't seem to be an issue. He made up a work order and off I went. Well Friday afternoon came and I had to call to see if my bike was finished and ready, they said it was and so I went to pick it up. Upon arriving there the gentleman who was involved in commenting on the work didn't even remember me or the work mentioned (even though he was involved) asked me for my name and brought the bike out to me. Upon my inspection I noticed everything was working pretty nicely but somehow the lower crank was over looked and the tires were still flat which were that way when I brought the bike in. The gentleman told me that he was not the one who worked on the bike so he didn't know why the crank was missed but proceeded to go ahead and put it on the bike stand and fix it right then and there. That was great but they had the bike a whole entire week and one would think that what was on the work order would be completed with that amount of time. So I left on Friday evening without my bike and asked them to fix it for first thing Saturday morning when they opened. I showed up to get the bike Saturday morning which this time the Service gentleman remembered me and commented that the crank was tightened back up and that the bearings were OK. So again upon inspecting it one last time I noticed that the tires were still flat and I had to ask them to fill those up. The staff was really friendly however somehow it was poor communication between what our original talk was on the work order any actual work that was performed. I was really annoyed with the fact that they couldn't even call me to let me know the bike was complete, that not all things on the work order were completed, and that no one even noticed that my tires were flat taking the time to fill them up before the final pickup. I'm not sure that I would bring my bike back there for service again. They've always been great in the past but there seems to be a disconnect amongst the service employees and the customer. Update: So upon arriving at my recreational spot with my bike on Sunday morning I noticed a loud clicking noise coming from the crank about two revolutions into the ride. Can you believe that these guys took the bolts out of the smallest sprocket (I assume to get at the crank assembly) kept one bolt in loosely and never put the others back in so the sprocket was banging around. I was really irritated, pissed actually. I'll never go back to Plaines. I'd rather spend a couple bucks more knowing that my bike was actually worked on by people that followed through. Now I have to spend my time fixing it. Not trustworthy. read more
