The "Veteran" bootleg mentioned in the review itself.
    Sebastian G.

Good record store. Last time I went the building was hot, but this certainly changed. Great record selection, love the imported bootlegs that other stores don't sell, and they had CD's for people who don't want Vinyl. Hopefully I can go back soon to cop the Veteran bootleg they had that I foolishly didn't buy.

I went to Plan 9 for their Barbie Movie Album listening party! The employees were great with the crowd control, and were very nice. I wished they had announced more that the album was starting, or possibly asked people to quiet down, because it was quite loud while listening to music. I had a great time walking around the store though - they have a wide selection os tapes, CDs, and vinyls, lots of options at all price ranges. I even snagged an autographed CD for a gift! It's a pretty chill place to shop, and especially if you're looking for something specific.

Vinyl paradise!! For all my music lovers this place has something for everyone. CDs, vinyl, tshirts, ect. I immediately had nostalgia strolling through the aisles looking at albums. As the majority of the items in this store are used there was a lot of dust so people with allergies beware. Cool place to grab vintage music if that's what you are into.

Huge haul for my vinyl collection

Plan 9 is a must-stop destination on our road trips from Portsmouth to Richmond. I love coming here with my audiophile father. We browse separately, each picking out our recommendations for the other, then meet at the checkout. The used vinyl is where I do most of my browsing. Great collection of classic rock, country, funk, oldies. I do wish the blues section was larger -- it's so small, if you blink you'll walk right past it. Other than that, the quality of the vinyl has always exceeded my expectations, and the employees are helpful. Make sure you grab a free sticker at checkout so you can rep this cool store!

I am not a music buff at all. I fully admit that I do not have an MP3 player, Spotify, iTunes, or even CDs. I am that person who only listens to music on the radio or if someone else is playing it. But even I enjoy browsing the vinyls at Plan 9, and it's one of the first places I'll go to look for gifts for my music loving friends. The store feels open and welcoming and the staff is friendly. The store isn't much to look at, but the layout is simple and easy to navigate. Albums are organized by genre, artist, and alphabetically, so you can quickly find what you want or hone in on something you've never heard of but might enjoy. They have a very large variety at any given time, from soul to death metal, classics to contemporary. They also sell other music related merchandise such as posters, players, and magazines, as well as a decent used DVD section for rock bottom prices. If you're in Carytown and have some time to kill, come check it out.

It's also a dream if you think run-of-the-mill superhero back issues should cost $1. PROS: Unique selection, variety, and endless dollar bins. You will find all kinds of amazing stuff you've never seen before. And all the stuff you have seen before? It's probably only a dollar. Or if you're not a cheapskate, they have plenty of those expensive "keys" and stuff, too. CONS: I don't know. Sometimes Jason plays jazz in the store? And I guess if you're the type of poser who wishes comic book stores had more funko pops and gaming tables, you don't deserve this store. This place doesn't have a new release wall and I don't think anyone cares about that. VERDICT: Congratulations, you've found the store you've been looking for. The owner, Jason Hamlin, has a reputation as a great comics dealer at conventions. He's a tastemaker who curates his store very well. So, even though it's not a huge store, and even though there aren't a ton of graphic novels and paperbacks, there also isn't a bunch of filler garbage. Recommended especially for bin divers and underground weirdos. (And I called you a poser, but Jason won't, he's a sweetheart. Very approachable and helpful.)

No, I don't need any new additions to my collection but I NEED to keep looking and buying (I bought about 12 or so LPs yesterday at Plan 9). I have a collection of (vinyl) records to rival most - over 15,000 plus almost as many CDs. I have thousands of 7 inch records. I'm 79 years old and I have most of the records I really want, but I love to continue the search. I love the experience of flipping through records. And Plan 9 is the best place (with the possible exception of Memory Lane) to do that. I spent an hour or so there yesterday morning and found things I don't need but like. I collect mostly Rock 'n' Roll, Folk, Jazz, Country, R&B/Soul but I am fascinated with the easy listening LPs of instrumentals and vocal choirs covering 60s and 70s popular music. The kids might call it "Exotica", but I call it easy listening. Plan 9 has it all - inexpensive to ridiculously expensive - Jazz, Easy Listening, Rock, Country, Soul, Hip-Hop/Rap, Folk, Local music. It's a trip and I love every second of it. Thanks, Plan 9 for hanging in there and giving Richmond an iconic record store!

I really appreciated the many genres of books they housed, and how many of the novels centered around magic, anarchy, protest, diverse cultures, etc. they had a great selection of stickers and little trinkets as well, which is fun to look at. I was a little confused because they are a new and used bookstore, but I didn't see used prices on any of the books I picked up, just the sticker prices. They even had signs about them buying books, but I didn't understand really where I could shop used if I so desired. The man at the register was quiet and didn't interrupt my browsing, but was kind when I greeted him and offered to help another guest while I was there. Since I generally don't find myself on Main Street and mostly shop used books, this isn't my fav store in the area, but it's definitely convenient for this part of town and has great stock!

They even have a decent number of CDs although they are priced higher than many Goodwills. Staff seems to be all volunteer. He also understood how some other volunteers might improperly categorize things and where to optimally try to look. He could tell that I had a sense of the different array of things in the store too. I was a bit surprised when he told me that he was here only part time. He was trying to see if he could give me a discount as he could tell I a bit surprised about the CD price. Even told me if I got one more CD or DVD that it would be $1 more. However, it was near closing and I just kept the purchase I had decided on. Two of the three CDs I got turned out not to be a win for me. Lol that is how it goes. He told me he worked here part time. He may've assumed I would come back here regularly.
