What ever happened to customer service? My friend and I went last Sunday evening (1/31/2016) around 5:30. We were aware that they closed at 6 and made our way around the bins with the intention of maybe dropping some money on full priced albums (not the cheap used bins). Around 5:55 one of the store workers started pushing a mop bucket around the store mopping around the customers while they made their choices. I get it. You close AT 6pm on the dot. Anyway my friend asked the guy mopping if we had a couple of minutes to finish our selections and the guy said in a grumpy asshole tone "no but you can go up front and pay". We were both shocked. Don't they not want to make sales? I understand the hours on Sunday that they close at 6 and that the guys have family at home and want to close up but come on FFS. Swishing a mop around and being rude to customers is not the way to say "can you please make your selections and head to the register as we are closing in a few minutes". Do other record stores in Richmond do that? No they don't. The guys at Deep Groove are WAY more friendly anyway and their selection is better. They wouldn't rush you out and not gracefully accept a few hundred dollars for a handful of records. I'm sure they will survive without me and my buddy buying there but from now on we will be shopping elsewhere where people are friendlier and more accomodating. read more

This place isn't really that good. They have a lot of shit...literally. Everytime I go in, I have high hopes. "Maybe this time I'll find that rare D.I. lp or that Simon and Garfunkel 45." I never do. The merchandise can be really cheap, though. That's the only reason this establishment gets 2 stars. Just die out already so we can put in a Pink Berry and drive out Sweet Frog. I guess there's nothing i can add to the locals' reviews of this place. Though, as an out of town record hunter, i give it good marks. For Clevelanders, this place reminded me of old Record Revolution. Lots of space on the main floor boasting new cds and wax, and a cramped lower level full of used vinyl. I found some sort of rare psych stuff for decent money. And i didn't have to dig through piles of dusty commons to find them. They were separate, which i appreciate. By far the best record store in Virginia. They have a great selection of all popular genres and a good number of jazz albums. Their classical collection is lacking but that's to be expected for a place like this. With a large selection of used CDs and vinyl, the occasional live act, and a knowledgeable staff, this is the place to buy music in Richmond. read more

I second scott d.'s dismay - Plan 9 is one of the gem's of Carytown and Richmond and the fact that the building is up for lease is not promising. I have been going to Plan 9 since I was a kid and loved to look through all the cds with my dad. I went back recently and the store looks much emptier than a few years ago with less selection. However, they still have an eclectic array of cds and a rocking selection of used cds. I refuse to pay $18 for a cd and I love finding things like a $3 Roxette cd. Apparently the other Plan 9 locations (Charlottesville, Southside Richmond, and Williamsburg) all closed so Carytown is all that's left. I hope people come from DC in droves to an authentic music store to see what it's all about before it disappears! Who wants to shop for cds at Target or Best Buy? Gross. read more

Can't give out a 5 since I lived in walking distance from Amoeba in the Haight in SF. Actually, Ameoba used to be Rock n Bowl back in the day, and the only thing worthy of taking the space was the largest record shop I had ever seen. Life took me to Richmond (who did I ever piss off?) but Plan 9 is a shining star to me. I dig used vinyl, but these days I prefer new vinyl on my reference system and save the used stuff for the bedroom audio system. read more

Plan 9 is Richmond's biggest record store, and while that's not saying much it's always worth a visit to the pretty big vinyl selection in the basement. They seem to have a nice turnaround of stuff, check the new arrivals section, and the prices are more than fair. An ample dollar bin rounds out the vinyl shopping experience at Plan 9, helping to fill in the holes in your collection or offer a few titles to bet a buck on. read more

Plan 9, the classic old school music store. Please come out and support this place. Life would be a lot less interesting if there were no independent record stores. They have recently downsized internally, doing away with the basement area that was packed with records and cds. They look to be moving to more of a used cd/record inventory though they do still stock new merchandise. Sometimes they do not always have all the new releases on the day the albums are released. I love the fact that they are carrying posters from concerts. I definitely enjoy checking those out when I am in the store. Plan 9 should always be a stop when you are in Carytown paying too much for clothes at all the swank boutiques. Don't download all your music. I had looked at this shop's website before I came in and was pretty disappointed with the lack of new releases in terms of vinyl. The selection they showcase online is way bigger than when they actually have in-store. Basically, if you're looking for older stuff, it's probably a cool place to check out because a lot of the used vinyl is really cheap. Fun place. If you're a music fan in Carytown, plan on spending at least thirty minutes bumming around. You'll be glad you did. The organization is pretty haphazard, so don't go expecting a library. But, that is part of the fun, and their selection is eclectic enough to make browsing the sort of fun experience I usually want out of a record store. I spent most of my time in jazz and rock. Jazz selection was good (they had stuff I never heard of--apparently John Cage and Sun Ra performed together, which seems pretty logical once I think about it), and the rock selection was pretty huge. read more

I love Plan 9! I also find the staff very helpful and friendly. I had to pick out music for a local retail space a couple of years ago and the manager walked around w/ me, opened CDs and helped me with all of the selections! What more can you ask for but great service? Still a fan! read more

Great place to find both common and obscure musical recordings (as well as additional media) in different formats.

It's a cool and hip place for sure; the owners know how to run a music business well. But the selection is the worst of any record store I've been too, and ever since they moved down the street Plan 9 has been a joke. I would recommend every other record store in Richmond before Plan 9. read more

Never order from their online website!!!! I ordered a cd box set two weeks before Christmas, with the assumption that plan 9 had it in stock. Unfortunately, plan 9 did not. The plan 9 music headquarters buyer, Bob, assured me that the product would be shipped to my house before Christmas. I called 3 times throughout the time and he was very rude and quick-tempered when I asked him about the product and it's whereabouts. He lied to me twice saying that he had the product in his hands and he would ship it that day. Christmas came and went. i called again on 12-26-12 and he said he had not received the product, lied again. So he asked me if I wanted to get a refund, and I said YES! This does not stop here....instead of refunding my account, he charged me for it. The first charge was a week before Christmas, and then he charged me again today 12-27, so he charged me double initially. I am very angry and frustrated with his misconduct and irresponsibility with customer care. Obviously he was rushing when he was messing with my bank account....I would never have him in my business if I was the owner of Plan 9. I could have just ordered from Amazon, since that is where Bob probably order my product anyway. Again, never order from their website. Ruined my excitement for giving my Dad his jazz cd collection for Christmas! Portion of email Bob sent me: "Our web-store contains everything in our database which is many thousands more items than we actaully have in stock. Needless to say, it creates problems." read more

A lot of it is timing, you have to frequent any store to really get the good stuff and I have found some great stuff here at times. Visited Plan 9 a couple day ago for the second time. The first time was three years ago, as I live in California and only visit friends in Virginia. It was much better three years ago. The downstairs used to stock both CDs and Vinyl, but now only has Vinyl. Most of the CD bins were only half full. Prices were okay, averaging around $8 for a used CD. Staff seemed friendly, but I didn't really spend any time talking to them. Probably not a place I would visit again. read more

Long time buyer, I've enjoyed shopping at plan 9 for over ten years, however, I will not be going back. I purchased 8 records a few days ago, and out of the 8, only 1 played all the way through without skipping. 3 of them were worth keeping because it was minor damage and didn't affect the sound too much. I attempted to take the four that were in very poor shape back, to no avail. The only help the employees offered was to buy them back from me at half the price that I paid, so they can sell them again. Therefore, I was ripped off and eventually some other poor soul will be ripped off buying these records, although I'm sure this is common practice at plan 9 now. They do not inspect their records for quality. For quality records and good customer service, I would definitely reccomend Deep Groove over Plan 9. Beware. read more
