So far I've had a great experience with this Planet fitness. The gym itself is very clean and easy to navigate, but the staff in particular are very accommodating. The gentleman Lewis who helped show me around the gym was exceptional at making sure I understood all of the perks that came with my black card. Some may be thinking...4* for a Planet Fitness. I am thinking yes and why not? First of all, let me say that this is the cleanest Planet Fitness location that I have ever been to. Most previous locations I've been to have been in Brooklyn but whatever the case may be this is the cleanest. This spot is fairly new so let's hope they keep on top of it. They get a star for convenience and accessibility. It seems like there is a shortage of gyms on this island. Why they (or another major chain) has not opened shop here previously is beyond me. For the price, they can not be beaten. The plan I grabbed (speak more on this below) is only 20 bucks a month. This includes access to this location and any other, use of massage chairs, beds, tanning, and unlimited guest passes. They always seem to have specials going on for new sign-ups such as 1.00 down and 10 bucks a month or similar. Another star would be for a large amount of equipment. The free weights may be limited and do not go very high in weight so for the heavy lifters not familiar with Planet Fitness I would say you may want to seek another location but it is so cheap that you may as well grab a membership for light days and cardio. Nothing really negative to say. As far as my membership goes mentioned above...when I initially signed up I was charged a 49.00 sign-up fee. Two days later I see a deal for zero fees or something insignificant like 1 dollar. I asked an employee if they would honor that for me seeing I had just signed up. The first told me no. The next two said they were unsure and I would need to speak with a manger. Took a couple more visits to actually see a manager as I was told they had a shortage. Said manager (and I wish I could recall his name) said it would not be a problem and resolved it by freezing my monthly fee to make up for the initial sign-up fee. Since then, another employee called me to assure me that it was going in to affect which was cool. read more

This place would be a solid 5 stars if it just got an incline beach press Life Fitness machine. I have the black card which is awesome I can use their Fall River gym that probably one of the absolute one of the best gyms. It's clean, the staff is always friendly, plenty of weight and cardio equipment. I just wish the barbells and curling bars went a little higher in weight. But I have bowflex equipment at home to supplement it. For the money whichever membership you choose it's the absolute best value on the island. But you can always make due with any gym, not one is perfect, this one is pretty close. read more

Planet Fitness is the third gym I've used since moving to the island three years ago. Options are limited on the island and, after all gyms re-opened since the lockdown, I decided to try this one, even though I am generally wary of corporate "box-store" fitness centers. If for no other reason than gym contracts are really about making the ability to cancel your membership like trying to get an exit visa out of 1983 Kazakhstan. My review is prefaced on my initial impressions only; I've only been a member here for about a week, so I want to be fair about my overall experiences. Many are emerging out of Covid hibernation and possibly looking to rejoin a fitness center, so perhaps the impressions of a guy who has never used a PF before might be of service. I have used MANY gyms over the years and in different states. Some decent, some resembling a prison yard. However, no matter where I was, I could expect a certain standard; it was a GYM. It was loud, weights banged, guys grunted, there were gym bags on the floor, people talking on cellphones, it stunk with sweat, pretty much what you'd expect in an enclosed space where humans were intensely exerting themselves. Planet Fitness is...different. Not better or worse, but there are a few things you should know. PF's business model is built upon eradicating the "Lunk", a euphemism for the generic, archetypal bodybuilding class. Indeed their signage, placed everywhere throughout the facility, reinforces their "Judgement Free" mantra. Essentially, that means they want everyone to feel like a winner and not have to be intimidated by knuckle-dragging "pump-u-up" types (like me). To that end, they have scaled down weight-lifting equipment; there are no squat racks, the heaviest dumbell is 75lbs, no kettlebells, no free-standing bench presses. So, PF is not an ideal facility for someone looking for a well appointed weightlifting gym. It is more suited for someone who wants to concentrate on cardio with or without strength training. Oh, and if you've never heard of this, all PFs have a device located above the weight area called the "Lunk Alarm" which is a sensor designed to detect grunting, yelling, weights banging, so forth. It will actually emit a piercing alarm (haven't heard it yet) if anyone gets too loud with their workout. Frankly, I think this is a really stupid idea and goes too far. It's like something researchers might use to regulate and study the behavior of primates. The facility does have an impressive array of cardio gear along with a dedicated stretch facility and something they call the "30 Minute Workout" room. It's a nice facility. Staff has been polite and helpful. And for the price you could do a lot worse. The "Black Card" tier membership is only $23/mo. which is about half of the other gyms I used to belonged to on Aquidneck. With that comes access to massage equipment, tanning, access to other PF facilities, some other perks. Or you could just take the basic $10/mo option which is just access to the facility and floor equipment. Pretty good bargain. So, I'm really not certain if this going to work for me. While I understand PF is trying to be inclusive and make everyone feel they are working out in a "safe space", I also don't like feeling like I don't belong or that I present some sort of threat just because I am a weightlifter. There are other irksome quirks like no gym bags on the floor (never seen that before anywhere), no phone conversations on the floor, and no where is there a scale in the facility. When I asked someone at the counter I was told they do not have a scale as it might promote a negative body image. Sorry, that's ridiculous. EVERY gym has a scale. It's just a tool. If you are looking for a decent place to burn some calories and do some light weight training PF is probably a good option for you. If you're a serious weightlifter with a need for heavier weights and standard equipment I'd recommend you look elsewhere. read more

Writing this review after just leaving a workout and I find myself appalled. This particular location has some very friendly staff and a clean facility, however no reinforcement of the mask wearing policy. I was one of three people out of a group of perhaps 40 or more who wore a mask as intended; covering the mouth and noise. On my way out I intended to express my feelings to an employee, only to notice he too was wearing his mask incorrectly. I too work in customer service and understand how frustrating it is to continually ask people to put their mask on, but the lack of diligence, primarily on the managers part, could lead to serious repercussions. COVID cases are the time of this review are at an all time high, and you would assume that the mask wearing policy would be enforced accordingly. However, it's only gotten worse. Current policy places the responsibility on places of business to enforce mask wearing in order to protect the community, it's sad to see this business failing the people it claims to be working for the benefit of. read more

This location is NOT enforcing the rules on COVID. They should be shut down for that. In addition, you cannot cancel a membership remotely, you have to go IN PERSON or get a certified letter (which requires an IN PERSON visit to the post office). Whether it is corporate or this location they are not responding well to the pandemic. I would strongly recommend against membership here. How hard is it to have an on line system for managing, and cancelling, memberships? Intentionally made hard. After I pushed them HARD on the certified letter thing (which costs money, BTW), they said a regular letter is OK. So, WTF? And then they said they prefer certified to regular mail because regular mail can take three weeks....right. They are around the corner from the post office, and my area has next day delivery. So are they prepped to lie about that to make it harder for people to cancel? Update1: Mailed the letter with a copy of my membership card to them 1/4. Will call tomorrow to see if they got it. Update2: NOW I get a response on this site saying, no need for certified mail. Seriously. They are clearly hoping people will find it difficult to disenroll from their program. This is corporate greed at its worst. Why did they have their people say regular mail would take THREE WEEKS to move a hundred yards down the street from the post office? read more

Been a member since they opened. For the past 40 years I have belonged to a few gyms/clubs in the area. PF is the best deal, IMHO. No frills, no pools, no basketball courts.... just the stuff you need to get a decent work-out. I was 66 years old and 175lbs, when I joined PF, suffering from age-related sarcopenia (muscle loss). I am now at 200lbs and MUCH stronger than I was a few years ago. Staff at this location is terrific, very friendly. Place is kept clean. Maintenance guy is always there to fix things quickly. And most of the patrons are great too. read more

Staff re very nice but inefficiently situated. Everyone behind the desk instead of walking the floor to really monitor clanging and excessive and loud conversations. The no bag rule is outrageous especially since you don't have hooks or cubby lockers.All other PFs I have been to do have those. Carry keys, phone, glasses, headphones, magazines, water - you need all these things at once, locker room just isnt going to help. The local crowd don't stop talking in groups to the annoyance of those around them and no one asks them to move on if you will. It can go on endlessly. They hold camp around a few bikes or treadmills and do not stop talking. Equipment takes forever to fix, not even sure anyone knows that the abductor is not functioning properly. So few bikes, 3 down at a time and no exercise balls..................................... read more

Equipment such as upright and recumbent bikes are not fixedin a timely manner. Some of these bikes have been broken for a few months. There are only 5 upright bikes and recumbent bikes so they should be repaired quickly. This seem to be a recurrent problem at the Middletown Planet Fitness read more

Gym is fine if you like cardio, but the whole idea is that out of shape people can come without judgement so it is severely lacking in equipment (no bench, squat rack, etc.). Also the dumbells only go up to like 70. The staff is nice but the manager pretty much defines sleaze bag. When I signed up i heard him trying to rip some woman off of $11. Dude looks like he sleeps on a bed made of frozen pizzas. Watch out for him. Also, they were running some kind of bait and switch promotion where they said it was only $1 down to sign up but then tried to charge me for the membership at the same time. The staff had to take the charge off when said manager wasn't looking so that they wouldn't get in trouble so just be wary of that. read more
